PartⅠ Reading Comprehension(30%)www.xiexiebang.com

Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A,B,C and D.You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer sheet。

Passage 1

Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage :

It seems like every day there's some new research about whether our favorite drinks are good for us ,(76)One day ,science says a glass of red wine a day will help us live longer The next day ,maybe not It seems journalists are pretty interested in wine research and the same might be said for coffee. Now there's been a lot of research into whether coffee's good for our health “the results have really been mixed”, admits Neal freedman who led the coffee study and published his findings in a medical journal recently.“There's been some evidence that coffee might increase the risk of certain diseases and there's also been maybe more recent evidence that coffee may protect against other diseases as well”。Freedman and his colleagues undertook the biggest study yet to look at the relationship between coffee and health They analyzed data collected from more than 400,000 Americans ages 50 to 71 participating in the study “We found that the coffee drinkers had a modestly lower risk of death than the non-drinkers ,”he said. Here's what he means by “modestly”:those who drank at least two or three cups a day were about 10 percent or 15 percent less likely to die for any reason during the 13 years of the study when the researchers looked at specific causes of death ,coffee drinking appeared to cut the risk of dying from heart disease lung disease injuries ,accidents and infections

Now ,Freedman stressed that the study doesn't prove coffee can make people live longer.A study like this can never prove a cause-and-effect relationship(77)All it can really do is to point researchers in the right direction for further investigation And even if it turns out that coffee is really good for you, scientists have no idea why

According to the first paragraph, reporters would like to know the research findings of ___ A.tea B.beer C.alcohol D.coffee

According to the passage, which of the following is TRUCE? Freedman and his colleagues hired 400,00 Americans to collect date。

About four hundred thousand Americans worked for Freedman's team full time for 13 years。People Who took part in Freedman's research are about 50 to 70 years old。People Who are 50 to 70 years old seldom drink coffee According to the author, scientists__________。have already proved that coffee is good for human health have a long way to go before they find a way to study coffee have avoided the cause-and-effect approach to study coffee are still unable to figure out why coffee is good for us The word “mixed” in the first paragraph means“________”。both good and bad B.put together C.both sharp and soft D.confused

5.Which of the following is an appropriate title for this passage? A.Can Beer Help You Live Longer? B.Can Coffee Help You Live Longer? C.Can Whine Help You Live Longer? D.Can Tea Help You Live Longer? Passage 2

Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:

When we're learning a foreign language, making sense of what we hear is the first step toward fluency. It sounds obvious, but until recently, we didn't know much about how listening works.New research demonstrates that effective listening involves more than simply hearing the words that float past our ears.Rather, it's an active process of receiving information and making meaning. This kind of engaged listening is a skill that's as critical for learning a range of subjects at school and work as it is for learning to understand a foreign tongue。

(78)Studies of skilled language learners have identified specific listening strategies that lead to superior comprehension.Last year, for example, University of Ottawa researcher Larry Vandergrift published his study of 106 undergraduates who were learning French as a second language.Half of the students were taught in a conventional fashion, listening to and practicing texts spoken aloud. The other half, possessing the same initial(最初的)skill level and taught by the same teacher, were give detailed instruction on how to listen. It turned out that the second group “significantly outperformed”(胜过)the first one on a test of comprehension。

So what are these listening strategies? Skilled learners go into a listening class with a sense of what they want to get of it.(79)They set a goal for their listening, and they generate predictions about what the speaker will say. Before the talking begins they mentally review what they already know about the subject, and form an intention to “listen out for” what’s important or relevant.Once they begin listening, these learners maintain their focus;if their attention wanders, they bring it back to the words being spoken. They don’t allow themselves to be thrown off by confusing or unfamiliar details.Instead, they take note of what they don’t understand and make inferences about what those thing might mean, based on other clues available to them;their previous knowledge of the subject, the context(语境)of the talk, the identity of the speaker, and so on。

6.What is the main idea of this passage?

A.Effective listening means hearing the words that float past our ears。B.Developing your listening skills is the first step toward developing fluency。C.Skilled listeners use specific strategies to get the most out of what they hear。D.Listening is one of the most powerful tools we have to gain information。7.What does Vandergrift’s research show?

A.Learners who adopt specific listening strategies become better listeners。B.Learners taught in the traditional way are better at reinforcing what they learn。C.Learners are more confident if they make fewer mistakes。D.Learners who listen on a regular basis improve faster。

8.Which of the following statements about Vandergrift’s research is TRUE? A.The participants were postgraduates learning French as a second language。B.All the participants were taught using the conventional method, with the focus on listening strategies。

C.The two groups were taught by different teacher。D.The participants were at the same initial skill level。

9.The expression “thrown off” in the third paragraph is closest in meaning to “_____”。A.infected B.confused C.ruined D.informed

10.According to the passage, which of the following strategies is NOT used by skilled learners?

A.Review their prior knowledge of the subject。B.Concentrate on the speaker’s words。C.Translate into their native language。D.Predict what the speaker will way。Passage 3

Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:

(80)As the Titanic was sinking and women and children climbed into lifeboats, the musicians from the ship’s band stood and played. They died when the ship went down.Men stood on the deck and smoked cigarettes. They died, too. This behavior is puzzling to economists, who like to believe that people tend to act in their own self interest.“There was no pushing,” says David Savage, an economist at Queensland University in Australia who has studied witness reports from the survivors. It was “very, very orderly behavior。”

Savage has compared the behavior of the passengers on the Titanic with those on the Lusitania, another ship that also sank at about the same time. But when the Lusitania went down, the passengers panicked(恐慌).There were a lot of similarities between these two events. These two ships were both luxury ones, they had a similar number of passengers and a similar number of survivors。

The biggest difference, Savage concludes, was time. The Lusitania sank in less than 20 minutes. But for the Titanic, it was two-and-a-half hours.“If you’ve got an event that lasts two-and-a-half hours, social order will take over and everybody will behave in a social manner,” Savage says.“If you’re going down in under 17 minutes, basically it’s instinctual。” On the Titanic, social order ruled, and it was women and children first. On the Lusitania, instinct won out.The survivors were largely the people who could swim and get into the lifeboats。

Yes, we’re self-interested, Savage ways. But we’re also part of a society.Given time, social norms(规范)can beat our natural self-interest.A hundred years ago, women and children always went first.Men were stoic(坚忍的)。On the Titanic, there was enough time for these norms to become forceful。

11.According to the author, economists were confused because_____。People’s behavior was disorderly on the Titanic People did not act in their own interest on the Titanic most men did not act in their own interest on the Lusitania women and children could not climb into the lifeboats

12.The expression “won out” in the third paragraph is closest in meaning to “_____”。A.took the upper hand B.went out of control C.ran wild D.shut down

13.According to David Savage, _____ was a critical factor in determining people’s behavior in the sinking of these two ships。

A.social order B.place C.instinct D.time

14.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT TRUE? A.Both ships were expensive ones。B.A similar number of women and children from both ships survived。C.About the same number of people from each ship died。D.Both ships had a similar number of passenger。

15.Which of the following is an appropriate title for this passage? A.Why Didn’t Musicians Play on the Lusitania? B.Why Did Musicians Play on the Titanic? C.Why Didn’t Passengers Panic on the Titanic? D.Why Did Men Smoke on the Titanic? Part Ⅱ Vocabulary and Structure(30%)

16.答案:D强调句型,It is…that…

2013.05 Part I Reading Comprehension Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D.You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer sheet. Is that 6 a.m.workout getting in the way of good sleep? Don' t think your fat cells won' t notice.A new study published in The Annals of Internal Medicine(a medical journal)finds that in-adequate shut-eye has a harmful effect on fat cells, reducing their ability to respond to insulin(胰岛素)by about 30 percent.Over the long-term, this decreased response could set the stage for type-2diabetes(a medical condition in which someone has too much sugar in his or her blood), fatty liver disease and weight gain. The study adds to a growing body of evidence that there' s “an intimate relationship between the amount of sleep we get and our ability to maintain a good, healthy body weight,” says sleep expert Helene Emsellem, director of the Center for Sleep and Wake Disorders in Chevy Chase,Maryland.(76)But Americans don't seem to be getting the message that we need seven to nine hours per night.More then 1 in 5 of us, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is getting six or fewer hours of sleep per night, on average. So how did researchers study fat cells in the Annals paper? Matthew Brady of the University of Chicago and a group of colleagues selected and persuaded seven volunteers to take part in the research project. They were all young, thin and healthy and agreed to sleep for eight nights in a sleep lab.“For four nights they were allowed to stay in bed for 8.5 hours a night,” says Brady. Then, a month later, they came back for four additional nights--but this time they were allowed just 4.5 hours of sleep per night. And after each visit, researchers got a sample of their fat.(77)Brady explains that the fat cells responded significantly to the loss of sleep.“I was very surprised to be honest,” he says.Bad things can happen when fat cells become less responsive to insulin.“Fat cells are actually your friend,” h.e says.“They're there to store lipids(血脂).” When lipids stay inside the cells, your body can utilize the fat when you' re exercising or sleeping or going about your day.“ However, when fat cells start to become insulin resistant, the lipids start to leach out of the fat cells and rise in the bloodstream,” Brady says.第1题单选 According to the passage, lack of sleep for a long while can probably lead to all of the following EXCEPT________ A.heart disease B.weight gain C.Diabetes D.liver disease 答案:A 第2题 The main idea of the third paragraph is________ A.how to write a medical research paper B.how to avoid sleep loss C.how the research was conducted D.how to conduct a medical experiment 答案:C 第3题 What does the word “leach” in the last paragraph probably mean? A.Poor Sleep May Lead to Too Much Stored Fat and Disease B.Sleep Experts Had Exciting Findings in a Fat Study C.Americans Should Have More Than Six Hours of Sleep D.Bad Things Happen if Fat Cells Become Our Friend 答案:B The top of the world is a wonderland. In winter, the temperature often falls to-30~F and the sun never rises. The ocean is surrounded by frozen ground. There are few people or trees, but to polar bears, the Arctic(北极)is home.(78)Polar bears have thick fur, big paws and other features that make them well prepared for life in their tough environment. In fact, they need the Arctic sea ice for survival, But climate change is causing larger and larger areas of summer sea ice to melt(融化).Experts say that if warming patterns continue, the Arctic could be free of summer sea ice by 2050.That may cause two-thirds of the word' s 20,000 polar bears to be gone by then too.Polar bears can' t survive for long on land.Seals are their main source of food. The only place where polar bears can hunt seals is on the ice.(79)Although these bears are strong swimmers, they are no match for lightning swirl seals in the water.A polar bear has brilliantly clever strategies to overcome this disadvantage. In winter the bear waits motionless beside a seal' s breathing hole, which is a narrow tunnel through the ice.Often many hours pass before the seal comes up for air and thc bear kills it with a powerful blow of its paw.In summer, the polar bears that live on land cat very little and wait for the sea ice to return. With the sea ice forming later in the year and melting earlier, polar bears do not have enough opportunity to hunt and eat.Less sea ice makes it harder for the bears to catch the seals. The bears must swim longer distances between ice packs(大片浮冰), and they can' t always make it.The ice is also getting thinner. These conditions can cause polar-bear cubs to become separated from their mothers, who provide them with food.Steven Amstrup is the chief scientist of Polar Bear International. The group aims to save the bears and their home.“The more people who see polar bears and understand their difficult situations, the better the chance we' 11 alter our warming path in time to save them,” he says.第6题 Which is the best title for the passage? A.Saving energy.B.Conducting scientific research.C.Seeking international cooperation.D.Saving polar bears and their home.答案:D Imagine a school that expected its students to become literate(有读写能力的)without any formal instruction. Most parents would be alarmed by such an approach, which would leave their children confused and with gaps in their understanding. This however has been the philosophy on character development in many of our schools. Why is the development of character seen as some-how different from the other skills that we teach? Of course there will always be learning by osmosis(耳濡目染)in any school, but as a teacher and primary school head I have found that a child' s moral literacy is strengthened when they acquire the building blocks of good character such as consideration, courage and honor: qualities which are commonly known as virtue(美德).I personally find that exploring a virtue over a two-week period provides a simple and effective program that allows for the creative input of both teacher and student and a chance for the virtue to embed(使融入)itself.Once a lesson on a virtue such as honesty has been completed we need to allow time for children to practice this concept just as would be the case with fractions or verbs.Allowing children to role play a situation such as making up excuses to cover a mistake can be enormously interesting, and the drama can be frozen allowing the characters to be questioned about their feelings and motives.(80)It' s also a safe way for children to experience for themselves how a lie usually goes out of control. Our role as educators is also to look for opportunities to help our students as they attempt to strengthen their characters. When something goes wrong we guide the young person to the virtue that will prevent it from happening again. For instance, when a student thoughtlessly disturbs the calm atmosphere of the library, instead of a response such as, “that was really disrespectful and selfish of you!” we draw out from them the required virtue: “When you' re walking though the library, what virtues do you need to use?” 第11题 Which of the following is the main idea of this passage? A.Teaching morals and values has been a frequently discussed topic in the past few years.B.The author and his staff embed virtues into lessons and school life to encourage character development in children.C.Kids throughout the population face the same needs, the same challenges, and the same realities in their lives.D.Role plays are an excellent way of getting students to practice their English.答案:B 第12题 We can infer from the first paragraph that_______ A.there tends to be disagreement about what character education is B.most parents are not satisfied with the teaching methods adopted in schools C.the approach to character education is generally considered different from the approaches to other skills D.more and more schools are adopting strategies to improve school attendance 答案:C 第13题 The word “philosophy” in the first paragraph is closest in meaning to._______ A.study B.Subject C.viewpoint D.investigation 答案:C 第14题 The author is a________ A.Teacher B.librarian C.Reporter D.manager 答案:A 第15题 Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage as a way to build character in children?
