奥巴马 纪念曼德拉

THE PRESIDENT: At his trial in 1964, Nelson Mandela closed his statement from the dock saying, “I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination.I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities.It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve.But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”

总统:纳尔逊•曼德拉(Nelson Mandela)在1964年接受审判时在被告席上结束他的陈述时说:“我曾为反对白人统治而斗争,也曾为反对黑人统治而斗争。我一直珍藏着一个民主、自由的社会的理想,让所有人都生活在一个和谐共处、机会均等的社会中。我希望为这个理想而生并将其付诸实现。但是,如果需要,我也愿为这样一个理想献出生命。”

Through his fierce dignity and unbending will to sacrifice his own freedom for the freedom of others, Madiba transformed South Africa--and moved all of us.His journey from a prisoner to a President embodied the promise that human beings--and countries--can change for the better.His commitment to transfer power and reconcile with those who jailed him set an example that all humanity should aspire to, whether in the lives of nations or our own personal lives.And the fact that he did it all with grace and good humor, and an ability to acknowledge his own imperfections, only makes the man that much more remarkable.As he once said, “I am not a saint, unless you think of a saint as a sinner who keeps on trying.”

I am one of the countless millions who drew inspiration from Nelson Mandela's life.My very first political action, the first thing I ever did that involved an issue or a policy or politics, was a protest against apartheid.I studied his words and his writings.The day that he was released from prison gave me a sense of what human beings can do when they're guided by their hopes and not by their fears.And like so many around the globe, I cannot fully imagine my own life without the example that Nelson Mandela set, and so long as I live I will do what I can to learn from him.我是从曼德拉的一生得到启迪的千百万人之一。我从事的第一次政治活动,第一次同任何议题、政策或者政治有关的活动,是一次反对种族隔离的抗议。我常常学习他的言论和文章。他走出监狱的那一天使我意识到,人类在奔向希望而没有恐惧的时候是何等的大有作为。我和世界各地许多人一样,无法想象如果没有曼德拉树立的榜样,我自己的一生会是什么样子。在我有生之年,我将竭尽所能向他学习。

He passed on peacefully in the company of his family around 20h50 on the 5th of December 2013.2013年12月5号20点50分(当地时间),曼德拉在家人的陪伴下安详地离世了。He is now resting.He is now at peace.他现在离我们而去,与世长辞。

Our nation has lost its greatest son.Our people have lost a father.我们的国家失去了它最伟大的儿子,我们的人民失去了自己的父亲。

Although we knew that this day would come, nothing can diminish our sense of a profound and enduring loss.尽管知道这一天终将到来,我们仍感到这是一个巨大在而无法弥补的损失。

His tireless struggle for freedom earned him the respect of the world.他锲而不舍地为自由而奋斗,赢得了世界的尊重。

I have ordered that all flags of the Republic of South Africa be lowered to half-mast from tomorrow, 6 December, and to remain at half-mast until after the funeral.我已下命所有悬挂国旗的机构在6日起开始降半旗,直到葬礼结束。

As we gather to pay our last respects, let us conduct ourselves with the dignity and respect that Madiba personified.我们聚在一起向曼德拉表示最后的敬意,让我们向这位崇高而又受人尊敬的人告别吧!Let us be mindful of his wishes and the wishes of his family.让我们谨记他和他家庭的心愿。
