浅谈语块学习对提高英语技能的作用
摘要： 语料库研究分析和语言学家的研究发现语言中存在着大量的语块。掌握和储存众多语块会对英语学习者的口语、写作和听力能力产生显著的提高作用，同时语块学习带来的更加地道的语言表达能力又能增强学习者的信心和激发学习兴趣。

相对于以往偏重语法的英语学习——强调英语记忆单词，注重掌握语法规则，侧重语块学习这一方法更能有效提高学生英语学习成效。根据国外语料库的研究分析以及语言学家的研究发现，我们每天使用的语言当中，几乎有90%的固定和半固定模式语块作为基本或者中介单位存在于自然语言中，有大量的语言是约定俗成和可预见的。Lewis(1993)认为这些语块可以作为理想单位用于英语语言教学和学习。语块的定义和类型
对于语块，不同的学者使用了不同的术语，如Bollinger(1975)称之为预制板块（pre-assembled chunks）；Krashen & Scarcella(1978)把它称作半固定式短语（semi-fixed patterns）； Nattinger & Decarrico,(1992)称其为词汇语法单位或词汇短语（lexico-grammatical unit, lexical phrases）；Lewis(1993)称其为词语板块（lexical chunks），并将其分为四种常见的类型：即复合词(complex words)和聚合词(polywords)、搭配(collocations或word partnerships)、惯用(institutionalized utterances)和句子框架与引语(sentence frames and heads)。尽管术语各有不同，但是它们却拥有共同的涵义：语块是指在语言中出现频率比较高，结构固定或者半固定，词义和运用语境比较固定的多个词的组合。例如，结构固定的语块：what is called、states of mind、around the world等，半固定结构的语块：a lot of____、define ____ as、problems arising from______ 等。语块学习对英语口语的促进作用
英语口语历来是中国学生学习中的一个难点，很多人背了大量的单词，熟记各种语法规则，但口语表达却总是处于“拙劣”状态，想要表达的时候“开不了口”，要么苦于没有想法，要么有了想法又不知道如何表达。Lewis(2002)指出这种缺乏“思想”与脑海中缺乏足够大、足够多短语词汇有关。而且还指出意识词语搭配的重要性，因为许多词语搭配是表达一个特定“思想”的最为准确和经济的方法。缺乏足够大的搭配词汇就等同于缺乏思想，至少缺乏精确的、现成的可表达的思想。的确，因为语块的意义是置于特定语境中的，所以记忆语块后用于表达比单独记忆单词再组合表达要方便和准确得多。比如，表达“想法一致”，不熟悉语块的人可能会这样组合单词：“have the same opinion as someone”或者 “have the same thought as someone”,这种表达远不如语块“see eye to eye”表达得准确和地道。
语块还能促进口语表达的流利程度。Nattinger& DeCarrico(1992)认为：“语言的流利程度不是取决于学习者大脑中储存了多少具有生成性的语法规则, 而是取决于学习者大脑中究竟储存了多少数量的语块, 是语块使人们能流利地表达自我”。语块作为整体在语言中出现的频率较高, 较高的频率可以确保这类语块能被学生循环使用，而这中重复性练习和使用正是使口语流利的一个基础。英国威尔士大学心理学教授Nick Ellis（2002）也同样指出：“语言学习是一个逐步积累范例的过程，流利运用的基础就是凭借储存在记忆中的大量范例。在时间紧迫的即时交流中，临场运用规则造句就需要较多时间和注意力，而且难以做到准确、流利和地道。而记忆储备中的语块将给我们及时有效的帮助”。记忆中储存的语块的半固定形式能不断生成新语块，例如“take____ for granted”,空格中填进去不同的词就能形成新的语块：take love for granted、take money for granted 等。它能带来即时交流所需要的丰富的语意，使思想交流更灵活，使口语表达更流利。
语块学习对英语写作的促进作用
Paw ley 和Syder(1983)指出, 困扰外语学习者有两大问题, 即如何获得接近本族语的流利性(native-like fluency)和接近本族语的选词能力(native-like select ion)。所谓接近本族语的选词能力, 是指学习者能够选用标准、地道的词语, 给人以本族语者表达的感觉。事实上, 不少学习者虽然能够流利地表达自己的思想, 却始终与本族语者的表达方式存在一定的差异。外语学习者往往从单词、语法学起, 用外语进行写作时, 更多地依赖根据语法规则构建起来的句子, 因而忽略了语块的作用。为了使语言表达地道、生动, 在写作中大量运用语块是一个重要的手段。正如成语和歇后语在汉语写作中所具有的地道、形象的效果一样，如果在英语特定语境中灵活运用语块, 可使写作更加准确、生动, 起到画龙点睛的作用。掌握大量的语块结构有助于学习者达到本族语者的选词能力。例如, 本族语者在表达身体健康时, 很可能使用 “physical fitness”, 而外语学习者很可能会使用 “body heath”之类的句子;再比如表达 “一个特别的人”时,用语块“a rare bird” 比 “a special person”更形象生动和地道。可见, 在写作中恰当运用一定的语块可以保证学习者用现成、地道的语言来表达思想, 使所写的句子更加地道, 缩小外语学习者与本族语者在词汇合表达上的差距,。
语块同样有利于增强写作的流利性。写作流利性通常是指学习者能够自如而不费力地使用外语进行写作的能力, 包括语言的流畅性和意义的连贯性(廉洁, 2001)。写作实际上是用书面语言表达思想的过程。在这一过程中, 记忆中储存的大量语块，即形式固定的短语和形式半固定但可以自由组合的短语，在思维的支配下，可以直接使用或者稍微加工后使用，省时省力，一定程度上可以避免思维的间断，增强写作语言的流利程度和意义表达的连贯性。
词块学习对英语听力的促进作用
听力理解也是英语学习者的一个薄弱环节，究其原因是因为学生孤立地去听每个单词和每句话，这种方式实际上是听力的最大阻碍。听力要求大脑在短时间内对听到的信息做出即时的理解和判断，也就说听力需要听者的大脑进行高效率的运作。而除了传统认为的积累单词量和理解句子语法规则之外，记忆语块对于提高英语听力不失为一个好的方法。
由于语块是较大的词汇构块, 大到可以是整个句子, 所以一次性记住的单词数量就会大大增加。在进行听力理解的过程中，当大量稍纵即逝的听力信息源源不断地进入听者大脑时，如果学生在记忆里储存了大量语块，对听到的语言形式和语意就不陌生，这样就可以在特定的时间里即时获取更多并能够有效提取信息和理解信息。例如听到这个长句：Creating a “European identity” that respects the different cultures and conditions which go to make up the connecting fabric of the Old Continent is no easy task and demands a strategic choice.如果单单依靠独立单词来逐个解析听力信息那么时间很可能不够，如果对语块熟悉的话，完全可以将长句分解为这几个语块：“European identity、respects the different cultures and conditions、make up the connecting fabric、the Old Continent和demands a strategic choice，那就有可能在有限的时间里较为清晰地弄懂听到的句子。而且由于每个语块都有语用功能,在记忆和积累语块的过程中，表示同一功能的语块以语义场(semantic field)的形式存在于大脑中, 这样, 语块可以使学习者获得一定的语用功能, 在听力中无需分析过多的干扰性的语法规则仅通过语块就可判断语言所发生的语境，提高听力理解的效率。例如：当一段听力对话中出现reference room、overdue pay、check out、current issue等语块时，通常可以认定对话的内容与图书馆有关。
由于语块还具有组织和衔接语篇结构的功能，如When it comes to 可以表示开头，Now there is a growing awareness that可以用来提出话题，to sum up用来总结话题，for instance、in particular可以用来举例，as far as I am concerned用来发表观点，likewise、on the other hand暗含前后对照，furthermore、in addition表示进一步阐述,indeed、most important 表示强调。因此通过掌握这些语块，使听者可以从整体上把握听力内容，节省对信息做出处理所需的时间，从而实现对听力内容的准确把握。
除了语块的意义对听力有促进作用外，语块的读音亦有同样功能。英语短语在发音时通常存在连读、省读、失音等现象，如果平时在记忆语块时能够同时注意读音，那么在听力理解中出现这些语块时能很快做出反应。比如，听到[,kɔlɪt ə'de] 时知道是 “call it a day ”,听到[izn ti] 时知道是 “isn’t he”。结论：
综上所述，语块的固定结构、可生成性、易于记忆和灵活使用的特性使其在提高英语技能的听、说、写方面确实存在一定作用，学习者应该在语言的学习中广泛阅读，加强范文背诵，积极积累和使用语块，提高语块意识，更有效率地提高英语技能。
