“Pride and prejudice” this book in junior high school have touched.Just at that time only saw the emotional entanglement between the actor and actress, ups and downs mood and let people immersed in them, after a few years, through again, do not have a flavor.Bennet had five daughters were not married, and Mrs.Bennet is a neurotic vanity is dye-in-the-wood woman, will each is her this life only event but never bother to discipline daughter's behavior, and Mr.Bennett is a family-centered old gentleman, but orgiastically wife and daughter's inappropriate behavior, prefer to hide into the library to seek calm.Jane Bennett is bennet's daughter, beautiful appearance, disposition gentle, quiet, Ellie was Bennett is bennet family second daughter, personality vivacious, intelligent and beauty and rig, The third daughter Mary looks not if other sisters well, therefore in character and knowledge on studying hard, but also caused her arrogant attitude; The Kitty ranked fourth personality buckish, with yao sister Lydia hottest loyal dancing, behavior often disrespect not know;Yao daughters vanity, pay attention to enjoyment, dancing and and army officers dou make fun is her sole purpose in life. One day the near their house moved to a rich single man bingley Charles. He is a personality temperate, personhood sincere not the nuances of the rich young man, in a banquet bingley but love on the bennet daughter Jane, and Jane Bennett mutual love, While bingley's good friend darcy · fee Bates William personality formal serious, mismanagement words often give a person arrogance arrogance impressed, unwittingly like work knuts the second daughter of house was Ellie, but because the Bennett a itself is not decent family make these two relationship by obstacle, Ellie was the beginning of arrogance darcy bias, the main thing is to describe their this relationship transformation process.Pride and Prejudice is a chefdoeuvre. But my first impression of this story was from screen. It's long long ago, maybe before I can read english books.I don't remember which movie edition I had seen. But I was impressed by the music, the scenery and the costume.I was very favor of a section of music in its balls. It's pretty brisk, liked a wonderful song of a bird.Regarding to the characters, I liked Elizabeth, the heroine, though I didn't think she's beautiful. But she's smart. However, I didn't pay much attention to the plot.I thought it's so long that it made me impatient and bored.By now, I haven't read the whole story in English or its Chinese version, either.I owe it to my prejudice. In fact, I didn't understand the story at that time.I didn't know why it called Pride and Prejudice.Of course someone was pride, but I didn't find where' s the prejudice.I thought it's normal, the way people treated each other in that.I considered prejudice would be very disgusting. But to the movie everthing was OK in my minds, except its length. Now, I think I have understood more about it.I'm a prejudiced person so I can't find where's wrong.I merely like to do the things I like.Everytime I meet somebody or something,my thinking about he or it all depends on my foregone experience and my mood of the time.I like it so just like it, if not so just not.I'm a person thinking by heart not by brain. What is worse, I actually didn't think it's wrong.I thought everyone is all like has his special way to cognize the world. So it's individuality, not prejudice. But I think something is wrong.Though everyone can judge in the way he likes, he can't ignore other ones. You can like what you like and hate what you hate, but you should be objective when you meet external world.I think it means that you should consider things roundly, not just partial.Individuality is different from prejudice. What is it? I need to think more.Love seems to be the perpetual theme all over the world. But actually what is love? For most girls in 20s, love may mean everything to them. They seek for love bravely no matter what difficulties they may face.In their eyes, love is pure or even holy. However, those are just an ideal situation, n real life;people tend to find a balance between love and property.Pride and prejudice is Austin’s great work.Through the discussion of the different marriages and love, the writer demonstrates her concept about love and marriage: love and marriage is closely associated with property and society, however, love and marriage can not only be decided by the property and social status. An ideal marriage should be based on mutual affection, respect and the same interest. She rejects the marriage based only on wealth.Different people have different ideas upon marriage.By the description and discussion of the four marriages in the novel, we can see that Austen fully expresses her views on love and marriage.Only by appreciating the marriage founded on the basis of mutual understanding and true love, but also by satirizing the marriage founded on the basis of origin and desire. The marriage based on social position and money can’t bring happiness in life.Aimless marriage and love are unpractical.Everything goes wrong for poor couples.Marriage based on wealth is not a fault. At least, it can offer us a better condition of life.Property is not everything in the life but without it, we can do nothing. This is called reality. But if you only married for wealth, you sell your liberty. The rest of your life might be miserable, and your marriage will filled with endless bitterness.

Pride and Prejudice

Jane Austen(1775-1817), the author of Pride and Prejudice, was born in a rural town named Steve Burton. There are six brothers and one sister in her family.Austen did not go to regular school, but gained good family education from her father’s literary books. The Austen love to read popular novels, and the majority are some vulgar pastime-products.Her teenage papers are the imitations of this kind of novel, thus she formed the sarcastic tone in her works. It is well-known that “sentimental novel” and “gothic novel” are full of English literature from the late eighteenth to the early nineteenth century. However, Austen’s works are iconoclastic, which presents the daily life of the middle class and the countryside that have not been affected by the capitalist industrial revolution. In the book, Mr.Bennet, a small squire, has five unmarried daughters, and Mrs.Bennet is anxiously looking for satisfactory husbands for their daughters. At the very fist, Mr.Bingley appeared in the small town as the Bennets’ neighbor. He is a bachelor who owes large fortune. And almost everyone in the small town wants to marry their own daughter to him, and soon Mr.Bingley fell in love with Jane, Mr.Bennet’s old daughter after a ball.Mr.Bingley’s good friend Darcy took part in the ball, too.He soon drew the attention of many girls because of his handsome feathers and tall figure. But he was so proud that he thought they were not beautiful enough to be his dance partner, including Jane's sister Elizabeth.Darcy told Bingley that the feathers of Elizabeth just can be “tolerated”, and not to the extent of drawing his interest.Out of self-esteem, Elizabeth decided to ignore the arrogant guy.But it was not long before Darcy was attracted by her lovable behavior. So he invited her to dance at another ball, and Elizabeth agreed to dance with him.Darcy gradually changed his view on Elizabeth since then.Bingley’s sister Caroline was always wishing to marry Darcy, but Darcy was very cold to her.So when she found that Darcy was into Elizabeth, she became very angry and determined to obstruct.Though Darcy appreciated Elizabeth, he can’t put up with her mother and sisters vulgar behaviors.Concerning that Jane was not interested in Bingley, Darcy persuaded Bingley not to marry Bingley.Bingley went to London in this case, but Jane still loves him deeply.Mr.Bennet doesn’t have son, according to the law of that time, Mr.Bennet’s property just can be succeeded by men, Bennet’s daughters can only get five thousand pounds as a dowry. So his estate will belong to a distant relative named Collins.Collins looks ordinary, but he is good at fattery.Depending on power he became a priest. He got married with Elizabeth’s good friend Charlotte as soon as Elizabeth refused his propose, which troubled Elizabeth a lot. There is a handsome young officer named Wickham and everybody spoke highly of him.Elizabeth was attracted by him, too.One day, he told Elizabeth that his father is

the manager of the Darcy, and Darcy’s father suggested that Darcy give Wickham a fortune in his will, so he can be a clergy decently. However, Darcy had the property all to himself. After listening to Wickham, Elizabeth became more disgusted to Darcy.Elizabeth met Darcy’s aunt Catherine when she was visiting the Collins couple and was invited to Catherine’s home. There Elizabeth came across Darcy who came there to celebrate Easter.Darcy can’t restrain his love for Elizabeth and proposed to her, but his attitude was still so arrogant, adding to Elizabeth’s serious prejudice to him before, she turned out him absolutely. This blow made Darcy realize the consequence of his pride. He left her sadly, and before leaving he wrote her a long letter of some explanation: he admitted that Bingley’s leaving was his fault, because he was unsatisfied with Mrs.Bennet and miss Bennet(not including Jane and Elizabeth), and he also thought that Jane was not really interested in Bingley. However, What Wickham said are all lies.In fact, Wickham spent all the money Darcy gave to him and tried to seduce Darcy's sister George Anna. After read the letter, Elizabeth was very regret not only for her mother and sisters’ behaviors but also for her blame of Darcy. The next summer, Elizabeth came to Darcy’s manor with her aunt and uncle. When she saw Darcy, she felt greatly surprised at his changing. She found that he is polite and respectable, the prejudice against Darcy had gradually disappeared.Later she got the information that Lydia, and Sir Wickham had got away from home, she felt worried and humiliated.Darcy paid back the money for Wickham without saying a word to Elizabeth, and helped them get married. From then on, Elizabeth dumped all the prejudice and fell in love with Darcy with all her heart.Pride and Prejudice is the most enduringly popular novel written by Jane Austen. It talks about trivial matters of love, marriage and family life between country squires and fair ladies in Britain in the 18th century. The plot is very simple. That is how the young ladies choose their husbands.I appreciate Elizabeth Bennet, who flatly rejectedCollins’ proposal, who is the heir of her father’s property and manor, and refused the first proposal from the extremely wealthy noblemanDarcy. All the facts and plots make it clear that Elizabeth seeks no fame nor fortune, but self-important and high mental outlook.Love is really a wonderful thing;if you pursue a true love you can never give up or submit to anything, stick to your principle and don’t be afraid of misunderstanding.I believe one day happiness will come true.

Pride &Prejudice Book Review

1306

袁野

20130301327

Pride and Prejudice was first published in 1813, although Jane Austen had written it between October of 1796 and August of 1797.This was at a time when women were expected to stay at home and just be a pretty face, not think for themselves, and not involve themselves in politics or careers.Men were authors;women were not.Even when Pride and Prejudice was finally published in 1813, Austen’s name did not appear as the author of the book, and in fact, Austen was never given credit for being the author of any of her works while she was alive.Regardless, Jane Austen is one of the most widely read authors of English literature and there is no doubt in my mind as to why this is true. She had a lot to say about women and society in England during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.Pride and Prejudice is quite comic and it paints a clear picture of how women who lacked their own fortune oftentimes had to give up love to marry for economic security and social status. And Pride and Prejudice was set in the English countryside in a county roughly thirty miles from London, the novel opens with the Bennet family in Longbourn and their five unmarried daughters. The family itself is not nearly as rich as those they interact with and because they have no

sons, the property is legally entailed to pass to a male heir, in this case Mr.Collins.Mrs.Bennet is intent on seeing her daughters married off to wealthy men and when Charles Bingley arrives at nearby Netherfield Park she is excited by the prospect of introducing her daughters to him.She immediately sends her husband to visit him on the first day he arrives. The first two sentences of the whole book are great. They will always be two of my favorite opening lines from any book, and they set the stage for all of the ridiculousness that is about to happen throughout the rest of the story“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighborhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.”

In fact, there are really three characters in this story—Elizabeth, Mr.Wickham, and Mr.Darcy.The pride of Mr.Darcy leads to Elizabeth’s prejudice, but it is also Elizabeth’s contempt and honesty that allures Mr.Darcy.Her prejudice is promoted and abused by Mr.Wickham—a man of ill nature but good disguise, whose self-importance and vanity are to surface later.Elizabeth is first partial to Mr.Wickham, fuelled by empathy and prejudice(in a good way). She rejects Mr.Darcy’s proposal, which

does not seem to hurt Mr.Darcy’s pride but only strengthens his intention. She began to see Mr.Darcy through her own eyes. The more she observes, the more affectionate she become to him.Her love for him is never a sudden one—it grows out of guilt, shame, gratitude, respect, and admiration.Elizabeth makes Mr.Darcy a less proud creature, while Mr.Darcy makes Elizabeth realize her own prejudice. It is love that motivated two.We all have pride, self-importance, and esteem. We all tend to be defensive when our importance is threatened by another “higher” being. So we impose stereotypes, prejudices, and biases on others. We judge people, we make evaluations based on fractions of facts, and we fill gaps with our imagination and treat imagination as evidence. In the end, our prejudice serves no other purpose than our pride.Prejudice prevents us from listening, so we will never hear what others have suffered.Prejudice prevents us from observing, so we will never see their true conducts.Prejudice prevents us from reflecting, so we shall never doubt our own righteousness and hence our esteem is preserved. How hard it is to see what is really there!
