“十二生肖”是指12种动物,即鼠、牛、虎、兔、龙、蛇、马、羊、猴、鸡、狗、猪。也就是俗话说的“属相”(animal signs),是中国人特有的一种表示出生时间的方式。在英语中与它们有关的谚语(proverb).习语(idiom)有很多,而且有时具有出人意料的意思。另外,表示同一动物的单词往往也不止一个。在特定的谚语.习语中需要使用特定的表示该动物的单词,不能混淆。这在很大程度上是由于中西方对动物的看法不同。

一、鼠(rat)(口,比喻)不忠的人;(尤指困难时)背弃事业的人;讨厌的人;不忠的人;(美,俚)新学生、下流女人。与它有关的谚语、习语多含贬义。例如: 1.a rat leaving a sinking ship 不能共患难的人

2.die like a rat 被毒死 4.a rat in a hole 瓮中之鳖

5.(look)like a drowned rat(湿的)像落汤鸡.6.rat out 夹着尾巴走,在尴尬中离去

7.Rats!胡说!瞎扯!(具有斥责、生气的意味)8.Rats desert a sinking ship.树倒猢狲散

另外,表示“鼠”的单词还有mouse(复数为mice)。下面的则是使用mouse的习语。11.as poor as a church mouse 一贫如洗,赤贫的 12.like a drowned mouse 狼狈不堪/落汤鸡/落水狗 13.play cat and mouse with sb.对某人时好时坏 14.(as)quiet as a mouse 不出声;无声响

二、牛(ox)(不分性别的通称);公牛;阉牛。相关的谚语、习语很生动形象。例如:
