THE GREAT STONE FACE
The Author s IntrusionRereading Hazlitt...Herodotus...Chaucer...Shakespeare...Bos-well...Montaigne...and certain other emitters of luminosity neverpalls. Now and then I have dipped-only dipped-into my-self with pleasure...but pursuit of that pleasure is certain tosharpen awareness of words not precise or harmonious...of doggedphrases...of sentences to be remodeled...of transpositions thatwould strengthen grace...of subject matter by hunks that hadbetter be excised...and of interesting...delightful...winged thingsin my head that belong to the written composition.I am sogrounded in respect for the English language as used by noblewriters for more than five hundred years that I have neverbeen contemporaneous with more than four or five writerswhom I admire. My contemporaries have lacked amplitude...wit...Johnsonian horse sense...play of mind...and other virtuescommon to predecessors still waiting to be enjoyed. Most mod-ern American writing in the “best seller” lists is so loosely--often sloppily...ignorantly...hideously--composed that it has no appeal for a craftsman disciplined to lucidity and the logic of grammar...bred to a style “familiar but by no means vul-gar...” and harmonized from infancy with the rhythms of nature.Book Description

Impression of „The white stones‟
When I finish this book.I think it is very interesting. It tells us a story: An archaeologist is going to an island of Saran in Ireland. She wanted to study the megalithic stones. But on the ferry on the way, a woman sits next to the archaeologist, said: “In that island, people do not like archaeologist.” But she does not know why.Hear this news, the archaeologist is unhappy. She knew the woman does not want to her go to the island, but she never give up.When I was a child, my mother always told me:If the others tell you many things but you can not understand what do they say or you do not know why do they say this to you, you may not listen to them.Because the others tell to you things that maybe not all night, they also can be worse. So, sometime you can only believe yourself, and usually you are right.Like this archaeologist in the story, she just believes her mind, she believes herself, so she get the successful. She fined much information of the megalithic stones in the island. And the people in the island from that time, they also do not dislike archaeologist. They start accept her in their island. In this story, I have learnt much.We need a spirit:we must do everything to hold on.We can‟t give up.If you not give up, you may have many chances. But if you give up, you will not have any chances, so you will not succeed. But if you have the chances, if you work hard, you just can be
successful! We do everything, we must be brave but not reckless, this spirit is very precious and it should our to cherish it.But if we want to have this spirit, we need take much heart blood on it.
