Spring Festival is on the traditional Chinese festivals.People used to call it “the Lunar New Year”.It always starts between january the first and february the twentie its the most important festival in China Spring Festival
The most important festival in China is the Spring Festival. It is said that the Spring Festival evolved from an activity known as the Winter Sacrifice. It was a custom practiced by the people of primitive society. The Spring Festival marks the beginning of the Chinese Lunar New Year,so the first meal is rather important.People usually eat Jiaozi or dumplings shaped like a crescent moon on that special day.As for recreational activities during the Sping Festival, the Dragon Dance and Lion Dance are traditionally performed. One legend goes that the beast Nian had a very big mouth that would swallow a great many people with one bite.People were very scared.
The custom of putting up red paper and firing fire-crackers is to scare away Nian.
However, people today have long forgotten why they are doing all this, except that they feel the color and the sound add to the excitement of the celebration.
Traditions of Chinese New Year Before New Year's Eve
The celebration actually starts on New Year's Eve with the family reunion dinner.By New Year's Eve, you should have done the following:
Clean the entire home to get rid of all the things that are associated with the old year.Put away all brooms and brushes.Pay all your debts.Resolve differences with family members, friends, neighbors and business associates.Buy the following:
Red money envelopes,Oranges and/or tangerines,Fill a “Cheun hup(a circular red tray separated in eight compartments)with melon seedslotuschocolate coinsnuts etc.Flowers(especially plum blossoms, peach blossoms, water lilies),A new set of clothes and shoes for children, preferably something red or orange.Get new dollar bills from the bank.Insert the new dollar bills into the red envelopes. Now the red envelope is called a lai see or lucky money envelope. On New Year's Eve
Get together with close family members(not including married daughters and their families)for the ”reunion“ dinner.Pay respect to ancestors and household gods.Acknowledge the presence of ancestors because they are responsible for the fortunes of future generations.Open every door and window in your home at midnight to let go of the old year.On New Year's Day
Decorate your home with symbols of good fortune. Here are some suggestions:
Colors: Bright red(happiness);gold/orange(wealth & happiness).Fruits: Oranges and tangerines(good health & long life);tangerines with leaves intact(long lasting relationships;being fruitful and multiply);persimmons(happiness and wealth).”Chuen Hup“ circular candy tray(candy for sweet and circular for togetherness and continuity).Flowers: If flowers bloom on New Year's Day, it will be a prosperous year.Red banners or couplets with New Year wishes and symbols of good fortune in gold. The spring festival is also known as the lunar New Year or the Chinese New Year.It is the most important traditional festival in China and celebrated in late January or early February. The historical reason for beginning the year during cold weather is that it is the time between the ”autumn harvest and winter storage and “spring plowing and summer weeding”.In other words, this is the time for rest and relaxation after a year's toil ,and for celebration as well.In addition to the practical reasons of having the Spring Festival during the cold weather,a Chinese folklore offers another explanation.According to Chinese legends, a demon called Nian would torment people once a year during the winter time.So people gathered together to discuss how to deal with Nian. Some suggested that the demon was afraid of the red color, flames and loud noises. So they put paired red couples on their gates, set off firecrackers and beat gongs and drums to drive away Nian. These acts worked and Nian fled, Thus, the customs of celebrating the Spring Festival were born and passed down until today. The eve of the Spring Festival is a time for the whole family to get together for a big dinner party. So no matter how far away a family members is from his home, he will try this best to come back in time for the family reunion dinner.Fish is a must on the dinner table, as it has the same sound as “surplus” and whole family will usually watch the holiday special TV programmes together. At midnight, people used to set off firecrackers to bring in the new year.but recent years this custom has been forbidden in cities because of the fear of causing a fire.Instead , townspeople put on electric firecrackers or red lanterns. Some people also post painting of the Door God on the gates, while some post a big Chinese character“Fu(blessing)” in an upside down way, meaning the blessing has arrived at the door. The Spring Festival lasts 3 days.On the first day, people put on their new clothes and shoes and exchange new year greetings with their neighbours and relatives. They will greet each other with“Happy New Year”, “wish you a happy and prosperous year” Children especially like the Spring Festival, as they can get "lucky money(that means money wrapped in a red paper envelop wishing them good luck)from their parents and relatives, lion dances and dragon dances are performed, especially in the countryside, besides, people play Mahjong at home.

Baseball isAmerica's national sport. So it isnot unusual that many popular expressions come from baseball. But first, let meexplain a little about the game. Each baseball team has nine players.Thepitcher of one team throws the ball to a batter from the other team. The batterattempts to hit the ball.If he misses, it is called a strike. If a batter getsthree strikes, he loses his turn at bat and is called out.The batter also isout if he hits the ball in the air and an opposing player catches it.But ifthe batter hits the ball and it is not caught, the batter tries to run to oneor more of the four bases on the field. The batter can run to all four bases ifhe hits the ball over the fence or out of the ballpark.Such a hit is called ahome run. Now, here are some common expressions frombaseball.Someone who is on the ball is intelligent and able to do a good job.But a person who threw a curve ball did something unexpected.Someone who stepsup to the plate is ready to do his or her job.A pinch hitter takes the placeof someone else at a job or activity.A person who strikes out or goes downswinging attempted something but failed. We also might tell the person thatthree strikes and you are out.But someone who hit a home run or hit it out ofthe park did something extremely well.Sometimes I have to give informationquickly, without time to think it over. Then I would say something right offthe bat.If someone is doing an extremely good job and is very successful, youmight say he or she is batting one thousand. If I say I want to touch base with you, Iwill talk to you from time to time about something we plan to do.I might say Itouched all the bases if I did what is necessary to complete a job or activity. And if I covered my bases I was well prepared. However, someone who is way offbase did something wrong or maybe even dishonest or immoral.A person withstrange ideas might be described as out in left field.Let us say I want to sell my car but I donot know exactly how much it is worth. If someone asks me the price, I mightgive a ballpark figure or a ballpark estimate. If someone offers me an amount that isclose to my selling price, I might say the amount is in the ballpark. However,if I say we are not in the same ballpark, I mean we cannot agree because myideas are too different from yours. Finally, when a situation changescompletely, we say that is a whole new ballgame.
“steps up to the plate”是准备做自己的工作。“pinch hitter”表示在工作或行动中代替某人。
一个人打算做某件事却失败了会说“strikes out”或者“goes down swinging”。我们也可以告诉某人“three strikes and you are out”你被三振出局了。“hit a home run”或是“hit it out of the park”表示一个人把某件事做得非常非常好。
这时,我会说:“something right off the bat”这事儿很急。
但是,如果我说“we are not in the same ballpark”表示我们的价位差异太大,无法达成一致。
