一。不可“望文生义”的短语

1.Do you have matches？

你需要帮忙吗？

“名词match本意是“火柴”，这里用的就是词的本意。但问这句话的人也可能在询问你是否需要帮助。火柴是很小的一样东西，如果你手负重物，可能连小小的火柴也拿不出来呢。可以设想一下场景：当你一手拿着一杯酒，两只手都占着，忽然一个人问你“You havematches?”，你就要想一想，人家是真的要抽烟所以向你借火柴，还是只是开玩笑地问你是不是需要帮忙。这是口语中经常听到的一句话，如果别人是想帮忙，你可千万别误以为人家真的是向你要火柴。”

2.Small beer

Small beer是“小啤酒”的意思吗？难道啤酒还分大小？其实，在英国smallbeer指的是口味比较淡的啤酒，但是在美语中则是“少量啤酒”的意思。比如说夏天有客人来访，问他要喝些什么：Anything todrink？客人就可能回答说：“I'll have a small beer(给我一点儿啤酒。)”比喻用法中说的smallbeer，指规模或者格局不大的事物。自以为了不起，不是小人物的人：He thinks no small beer ofhimself.Be small beer常用作与人比较的表现。

口语中常用small beer作形容词，因此开快餐店的朋友可以说：Ours is a small-beer fast-foodjoint beside McDonald。

3.Skin off one's nose

从字面上解释是：不会从我鼻子上掉皮。但是，你要是在跟别人讲话的时候用这个俗语的话，你真正的意思是：这件事不是你的问题，也不是你的麻烦，而你也不在乎。

例子：“Hey, it's no skin off my nose if Susie's going out nowwith that guy!I don't care what she does--I broke up with her amonth ago, when I met Karen.Karen's a lot more my style.”
