太祝简回答道：“原来的君主行密子，只有十乘车。可他并不觉得太少，只是担心自己的德行不够，生怕有一点儿过错。现在您已经有了战车百乘，您却不仅不担心自己的没有道义德行，只是嫌战车太少。您就知道多造战车战船，这样势必增加了对百姓的赋税。赋税劳役一多，百姓自然不满意，对您诅咒责骂。而您以为真的光靠向上天祈祷，就可以为家族带来福运吗?民心不服，上下都背离您，咒骂您，您也会灭亡。您只指望我为您的祈祷祝福，然而全国都咒骂您，我一个人的颂扬祝福能比得过全国人的诅咒责骂吗?您的家族面临灭亡难道不是十分自然的事情吗?我又有什么罪过呢?”

中行寅行将灭亡不去寻找自己的原因，反而责备太祝。他哪里知道，其实他灭亡恰恰是因为自己的贪奢引起民心不满。

有一年，魏国的东阳地方向国家交售的钱粮布帛比往年多出10倍，为此，满朝廷的大臣高兴得不得了，一齐向魏文侯表示祝贺。

魏文侯对这件事并不乐观。他在思考：东阳这个地方土地没有增加、人口也还是原来那么多，怎么一下子比往年多交10倍的钱粮布帛呢?即使是丰收了，可是向国家上交也是有比例的呀。他分析这必定是各级官员向下面老百姓加重征收得来的。这件事使他想起了一年前他遇到的一件事。

一年前，魏文候外出巡游。一天，他在路上见到一个人将羊皮统子反穿在身上，皮统子的毛向内皮朝外，那人还在背上背着一篓喂牲口的草。

魏文侯感到很奇怪，便上前问那人道：“你为什么要反穿着羊皮衣，把皮板露在外面来背东西呢?”

那人回答说：“我很爱惜这件皮衣，我怕把毛露在外面搞坏了，特别是背东西时，我怕毛被磨掉了。”

魏文侯听了，很认真地对那人说：“你知道吗?其实皮板更重要，如果皮板磨破了，毛就没有依附的地方了，那你想舍皮保毛不是一个错误的想法吗?”

那人依然执迷不悟地背着草走了。

如今，官吏们大肆征收老百姓的钱粮布帛而不顾老百姓的死活，这跟那个反穿皮衣的人的行为不是一样的吗?

于是，魏文侯将朝廷大臣们召集起来，对他们讲了那个反穿皮衣的人的故事，并语重心长地开导他们说：“皮之不存，毛将焉附?如果老百姓不得安宁，国君的地位也难以巩固。希望你们记住这个道理，不要被一点小利蒙蔽了眼光，看不到实质。”

众大臣深受启发。任何事情都是一样的道理，基础是根本，是事物赖以存在的依据，如果本末颠倒，那将是得不偿失的。

狐狸在冰冷的溪水中站了一会，觉得双脚又冷又酸，十分难受。他见旁边有一块露出水面的大石头，走过去蹲在石头上面。狐狸想，蹲在石头上捕鱼，比站在冰冷的水中捕鱼舒服多了。他看着站在溪水中捕鱼的黑熊，觉得他太笨了。突然，狐狸发现一条鱼儿从水中游过，急忙伸手去抓，没有抓到。后来，狐狸好久都没有见鱼经过，就打起了瞌睡，梦见自己捕捉到许多大鱼。

黑熊看到一条大鱼飞快游过，“扑通”一声猛扑进水里，全身都浸在冰冷的溪水中。经过一番追逐，黑熊终于把大鱼抓住了，一边把大鱼高高举起，一边哈哈大笑起来。狐狸被惊醒了，睁开眼睛一看，原来黑熊又捉到了一条大鱼。狐狸的肚子已经饿得“咕噜咕噜”直叫，见了黑熊的大鱼，口水滴答滴答不停地往下流，无奈地叹了一口气，对黑熊说：“你的运气好，大鱼都往你那边游。我的运气不好，只看到一条游得特别快的鱼，没有抓到。我比你聪明、机灵得多，没有想到你已经抓到了两条大鱼，我却连一条小鱼也没有捕捉到，真是倒霉!”

黑熊对狐狸说：“我一直站在溪水中聚精会神盯着水中是否有鱼儿游过，累了也不休息。一旦发现有鱼儿游过，就不顾一切地扑上去抓住它。你舒舒服服蹲在石头上，还打瞌睡，怎么能捉到鱼呢?光有聪明和机灵是不够的，没有踏实苦干的精神，有了好的捕鱼机会也会白白失去啊!”

机遇是重要的，但刻苦是关键：自己不刻苦，机遇再多也没用。
