Book review of Tess of the D’Urbervilles
Tess of the D‟Urbervilles, published in 1891, is Thomas Hardy‟s most influential work.The novel tells us a tragic story of a beautiful country girl, Tess D‟Urbervilles.In her youth, Tess was seduced by Alec.She confessed it on the wedding night and was then abandoned by her husband Clare.At the end of the story, Tess murdered Alec in despair and this led to her final execution.Tess‟s tragedy is inevitable and unavoidable since she represents the sacrifice of that age.This article attempts to reveal some features of British political, economic and social development in Victorian age as this novel unfolds.1.The social transformation
Deliberating the whole novel, we can draw such a conclusion that Tess sacrifices herself for her poor family.So what strength, we have to ask, was impelling her family move towards poverty?
“The groan had proceeded from her father‟s poor horse Prince.The morning mail-cart, with its two noiseless wheels, speeding along these lanes like an arrow, as it always did, had driven into her slow and unlighted equipage.The pointed shaft of the cart had entered the breast of the unhappy Prince like a sword;and from the wound his life‟s blood was spouting in a stream, and falling with a hiss into the road.” Hardy wrote.At first glance, the above paragraph seems to be a very simple description.But that will take on a whole new different meaning when we try to situate it in its historical context: the capitalist economy began to intrude into the countryside, after the British Industrial Revolution by the end of the 19th century,The clash was rather symbolic.The mail-cart symbolizes industrialization and the equipage is a symbol of weak small-scale peasant economy under this time background.It suggested that the means of production on which peasants had been depending was completely defeated.Tess‟s poor family was just representative of countless peasants and it mirrored the real circumstance of Victorian Age in 19th century.At that time, England was deep into the convulsive transformations of the Industrial Revolution.The peasantry disintegrated and the yeoman class of peasants became proletarians.As to Tess„s identity as an aristocratic descent, it is just a mere fly on the wheel.No wonder Hardy uttered such a sign: “So much for Norman blood unaided by Victorian lucre.”
In fact, the discovery of their kindred with the noble D’Urbervilles is the beginning of Tess’s tragedy, and does no help till the end of her life.She was seduced by Alec when she was an innocent girl who was sent to claim kinship by her family.Clare abandoned Tess relentlessly as he knew her seduction by Alec.With nobody to turn to, Tess had no alternative but worked at Flintcomb Ash farm for wages in the hardest surroundings.Now things get worse.Modern mechanical industrialization was replacing the handicraft workshop gradually and it means Tess had to complete with merciless machines, suffer
deprivations and hardships, and yet bear it in silence.Worse still, Tess‟s family fell upon hard times on the death of her father.In such predicament, Tess gave in and chose to be Alec‟s mistress.Tess‟s experience from a peasant to a worker who sold out her labor to earn the bread was just one of the reflections of the course of the Industrial Revolution: the small-scale peasant economy was disintegrating.A great number of peasants slide into poverty.2.The spiritual crisis
No doubt that the shortage of material is terrible, but the spiritual void is more frightening.When the society was transforming from an old closed patriarchal society to the modern open society，people‟s sense of security and religious or spiritual beliefs were shaken.Traditional values from the old patriarchal society collapsed.People were suffering from spiritual crisis under the circumstance.“Tess, on her part, could not understand why a man of clerical family and good education, and above physical want, should look upon it as a mishap to be alive.For the unhappy pilgrim herself there was very good reason.” Hardy wrote.Suppose Tess‟s pessimism is simply due to her tragic fate, then where Clare‟s gloomy views come from?
We know that, for Christians, losing faith, losing all.Darwin‟s theory of evolution dealt a blow to the religious creationism and weakened the hold of religious dogmatism.People are confuse by the question “what's the basis for belief, morality and the meaning of life if God did not create life?” Now it‟s easy for us to understand even Clare, a admirable and poetic man, shared the same feeling with Tess——my soul chooses strangling, and death rather than my life.I loathe it;I would not live away.And there is no book that will explain the following question to Tess——Why the sun do shine on the just and unjust alike? Tess can do nothing but accused the twisted and depressing age she lived in.And she struggled, confused and suffering, because of the constant collision between the new ideas and old ones.After being seduced, Tess returned home in disgrace, refusing to be Alec‟s plaything.As a woman of self-esteem, she tried to oppose the old morals but failed
Since the old conventional consciences still played the dominant statue in the society, Tess was subjected to it inextricably.She saw herself as a sinner for losing her chastity.Even in nature, she looked upon herself as a figure of Guilt intruding into the haunts of Innocence.And she begged for Clare‟s mercy like a slave, saying “I will obey you like your wretched slave even if it is to lie down and die.” Apparently, Tess was suffering the traditional feudalism ethic all her life.Tess also has a paradoxical ambivalent attitude towards religion.When her child was dying, she thought of the child consigned to the nethermost corner of hell as its double doom for lack of baptism and lack of legitimacy.In desperation, Tess did baptism for her child.But she sneered at the hypocrisy of religion to a degree.Her dying wish was to let her husband marry her sister Lisa Lu, which challenged the law openly.Hardy ended his novel in a sarcastic tone——“Justice” was done, and the President of the Immortals(in Eschylean phrase)had ended his sport with Tess.Tess‟s tragedy is a fierce attack on the hypocritical morality of the bourgeois society and capitalist invasion into the country and destruction of the English peasantry towards the end of the 19th century.Her story ended as she died.But the fact that the social transformation in Victorian age brings people with much misfortunes, is bound to leave an indelible mark in human history.

About the writer: Thomas Hardy Tess of the D’Urbervilles was written by the famous writer Thomas Hardy.Thomas Hardy(1840---1928), who is an English novelist.His father is a stoneworker, who is fond of music.His parents thought much of the education of their son.He grown up in the Dorset shire, so the environment of there became the main backdrop of his writings.His writings often reflecting the change after capitalism intrude the countries in England and the people’s hard life.At first, Hardy wrote some novels, and in his old age, he worked on poets.Tess of the D’Urbervilles was one of his “Wessex series” works.The book which I read was published in the year 1891.Thomas Hardy facing the terror of the war and propagating the love-kindness, he is one of the greatest English writers.The summary of the book Tess of the D’Urbervilles was about a beautiful and industrious girl Tess, all her life, her unfortunate life and her very tough love story.Tess comes from a farmer’s family, the Durbeyfields.One day her father, John Durbeyfied was told that they are descended from the D’Urbervilles, an ancient family.Herparents were so happy that they urged Tess to close to their relatives and wanted to look foe wealth who he thought at local.In fact, their relatives never thought that, because their immense property relied on usury and the family name was just moved from museum.Unwillingly, the girl comes in contact with the Stoke, D’Urbervilles.There she meets Alec D’Urbervilles.Having received a job of tending to chickens, Tess stays in the D’Urbervilles.Before long the rich but guileful Alec manages to seduce the girl and make her pregnant.Being disappointed and sad, Tess went home she found she had already had a baby.She gave birth to child between insult and abuse, but it was died in fancy, desperate she was, so she decided to another place and found a job at dairy factory in the South, where she meets Angel Claire.Angel lived in a very wealthy family priest and he did not want to follow his family’s career.Instead of going to university he decided to work on the farm and began his own career.But when he met Tess he found he loved her very much.He always wanted to help her and gave some knowledge to her.Even he wanted her to be his wife.Tess loved him at same time, but she could not love him because of what had happened in her past at that miserable time.She did not want him knew that.Angel did not know all of these.He wanted her married with him as soon as possible and Tess.In the wedding night, Tess admits about Alec D’Urbervilles and the child.She begs for forgiveness, but Angel leaves her in disgust.Tess again returns home alone, only find that her father died suddenly and their house was taken away by its owner.All her family was homeless.Tess was so helpless that she made minds writing to her husband and wanted him come back and protected her.At Brazil Angel was not quite good, also had a bad life.He regretted abandoning his wife very much and wanted to go home.In the meantime, Alec D’Urbervilles appears again.He promises to support her family, only as a means to make Tess dependent.At the end of hope, the girl jumps into the trap of the shameless man.However, Angel Claire, who is remorseful for his mercilessness comes back, which makes Tess even more desperate.After Angel leaves, she kills Alec.Then she follows Angel and escape with him.They manage to hide for a while in a wood before she is arrested.They had a very short happy time on the moors, but on a placidly morning she was arrested by police and then hang.Angle followed her will and married with his sister-in-law with great sorrow and confession, and began a new life.Good sentences
