Shanghai urban planning exhibition center
Covering a total floor space of 19,000 square meters, Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center was completed in January, 2000 and opened to the public in Feb 25th of the year. The center offers exhibitions, data searching, study and exchange, education and leisure and sightseeing services. With the theme of “City, Human, Environment and Development,” the center has adopted high-tech facilities to display the overall urban planning in Shanghai and its achievements in this regard. This five-story building made of microlite glass, currently known as the world's largest showcase of urban development. It has a 1:200 giant model of the city center, covering 800 square meters. The roof of the center covers 3,000 square meters and is a grid in the shape of four petals of the white magnolia flower, the city flower. In its basement, there is a 45-meter-long mock scene of an old Shanghai street, featuring old city architecture and scenes.Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center is much more interesting than its dry name
suggests. Its highlight is on the third floor: an awesome vast scale model of urban Shanghai as it will look in 2020, a master plan full of endless skyscrapers punctuated occasionally by patches of green. The clear plastic models indicate structures yet to be built, and there are many of them.Beleaguered Shanghai residents wondering if their current cramped
downtown houses will survive the bulldozer(chances are not good)need only look here for the answer. The fourth floor also offers displays on proposed forms of future transportation, including maglev, subway, and light-rail trains that are going to change even the face of the Bund. The rest of the building includes a U-shaped mezzanine with photographic exhibits of colonial and contemporary Shanghai, a temporary exhibit hall on the second floor, and a cafe and art gallery on the fifth. There are restaurants and retail outlets crafted in the style of 1930s Shanghai on the underground level that connects to the Metro. The center is well worth an hour of your time.If you want to see what a city of the future is really going to look like, take yourself over to this center on the eastern end of People's Square in Shanghai.Shanghai xintiandi profile Located in the center of Shanghai City south of Huaihai Zhong Lu, Shanghai Xin Tian Di has become an urban tourist attraction that holds the historical and cultural legacies of the city.Shanghai Xin Tian Di is a fashionable pedestrian street composed of Shikumen and modern architecture style.Shanghai Xin Tian Di is unique because of its concept of construction. It retains the antique walls, tiles and exterior of the Shikumen housing of old Shanghai. On the other hand, its interior embodies a totally different world of international gallery, bars and cafes, boutiques or theme restaurants. When you walk into Xin Tian Di, you will get the taste both of Shanghai in the 1920's and the sonic modern lifestyle of urbanites of the 21st century.Development Concept of Shanghai Xin Tian Di
The Shikumen Building appeared in the mid-1800's, and is a product of Chinese and Western architecture styles. In the early 1900's, it was the residential buildings of Shanghai citizens. The building represents modern Shanghai history and culture. However, with the development of the city, the formerly glorious Shikumen gradually faded out the historical stage as it could no longer satisfy people's demands of residence. Thus, the idea of rebuilding Shikumen buildings was launched by the developer of Shanghai Xin Tian Di in 1997.As we all know, big cities or metropolises of the world all have their representative buildings which reflect the local history and culture, and which also become renowned tourists attractions.Shanghai Xin Tian Di was established with this phenomenon in mind. The result was to endow Shikumen building with new commercial value by changing its function of residence, changing old blocks into a new world full of life! Thus, not only the typical Shikumen architecture of Shanghai City was kept, but a block of commercial area was also developed by Shanghai Xin Tian Di.Xin Tian Di is divided into two parts: the South Block and the North Block. The South Block mainly consists of modern architecture with Shikumen architecture as an accompaniment. Its North Block kept the old Shikumen architecture style, forming a contrast to the modern South Block.South Block: As the complex of shopping, entertainment and leisure, the South Block covers 25,000 square meters(6.2 acres)and opened in the middle of 2002.This glass wall building has a very modern atmosphere.Besides restaurants from all over the world, boutiques, fashionable ornament shops, food courts, cinemas and one-stop fitness centers provide places of leisure and entertainment for customers and tourists from home and abroad.North Block: Composed of antique Shikumen buildings with inner modern design, decoration and equipment, the North Block features upscale stores and
restaurants with cuisine from different countries such as France, Brazil, America, Japan, Germany and Italy, fully revealing the international level of Shanghai Xin Tian Di.Xingye Lu, the dividing line between two blocks, is the site of First Congress Hall of the Communist Party of China. The Shikumen buildings along two sides of the street have become the scenery embodying both the historical and artistic features of Shanghai.Xin Tian Di attracts the eyes of people from all over the world.Famous stars open their restaurants or shops in Xin Tian Di, which become good places for fans to communicate with their idols.Except for that, the fascinating cabaret and cellar dinning room of the French restaurant, the inspiring rock music played by the Japanese music restaurant and the folk performance of South America in the Brazilian restaurant leave people with great impressions.Shanghai Xin Tian Di is where 'yesterday and tomorrow meet in Shanghai today'.It embodies the comfortable and convenient life of the 21st century, having all conveniences such as an automatic elevator, central air-conditioner and broadband network. Its boutique keeps in pace with international fashion. Also, the typical Shikumen buildings of old Shanghai seem to be telling people beautiful stories about the history and culture of the city.Shanghai Xin Tian Di has become the best place for tourists to appreciate the history and modern life of the city, and is also a meeting place for local citizens and foreign visitors. Two kilometers away from Xin Tian Di, there is a place of the same kind, called , which is also a welcoming art street in Shanghai.Shikumen
“Shikumen”, meaning “stone gate” , is a special old form of residence in Shanghai. In many ways, it is indeed a gateway to the fascinating history of this largest coastal city of China. In the middle of the 19th century, the uprising of the “Taiping Heavenly Kingdom” forced a large number of residents from Shanghai and its neighbouring Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces to take refuge in the city's foreign concessions. To meet the needs of the rapidly increasing population, “Shikumen” houses were built in the foreign concessions on an unprecedented scale.A typical “Shikumen” house is built along narrow alleys(or “long-tangs”)and features a stone gate framing a black wooden front door that leads into a small enclosed courtyard. This unique architectural setting provided residents with a feeling of security in a turbulent era, and as most of them were developed by foreign companies, “Shikumen” houses had gradually become a symbol of East meeting West in Shanghai.

An overview of Shanghai Good morning ladies and gentleman , my English name is Alocasia, working for Shanghai China International Travel Service. Now I would like to give all of you a brief introduction of shanghai.Shanghai has a monsoon climate which is warm and humid, the average annual temperature is 16 degree Celsius. But you are arrived here in a high temperature, although you should keep calm.Generally speaking, Shanghai is a charming city where east meets west and yesterday meets tomorrow. We would like say that if you want to see the future of china, please come to shanghai.Shanghai is a big city which has been divided into two parts: Pudong and Puxi. Many years ago ,a popular saying indicative of the shanghainese['ʃæŋhai'ni:z] attitude towards Pudong went, ”A bed in Puxi is better than a room in Pudong.” Now if we compare Shanghai to a dragon, Pudong is its head. You can find three tallest building in shanghai-the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, symbol of the city; The 88-story Jinmao Tower and the 492-meter tall World Financial Center with the most expensive hotel-Park Hyatt Hotel inside. Also a typical example of shanghai-styled architecture is the Shikumen houses, which are a combination of European town houses and the chinesecourtyard ,incorporating the Chinese design with the western architecture.Up to now, shanghai is regarded as the five center of china, the financial, trading , transportation, conference and fashion centers. We have 11metro lines in shanghai, The transportation system is well supplied, we even have a maglev train, and its speed is 431 kilometers per hour. There will be a change every year and a big change every three years, welcome to shanghai explore this charming city.Xintiandi Now we are in XinTianDi, which means” new heaven and earth.”This is a new entertainment spot as well as the new landmark of shanghai. As you know, shikumen, the unique architectural style, has been called a fusion of eastern and western cultures, once very popular in 1930s’.A typical shikumen building features a pair of black wooden doors framed by heavy stone, with an extravagant bronze handle on each of the doors. With the city’s development, the old shikumen is replaced by the new apartment step by step. Some people are worried that in 21st century, there will be no original shikumen houses in Shanghai any more. But fortunately, in xintiandi, shikumen has successful survived.Shakespearsaid,”God gives woman one face , and the woman made themselves another.”XinTianDiis just like the night look of such a lady ,who is smart ,elegant and extremely beautiful.Actually XinTianDi is divided into two parts: the south Block and the North Block by Xingye road.In the south block , modern architecture is the motif while shikumen is an accompaniment. In the north ,preservedshikumen set a nostalgic tone , forming a splendid contrast with the modernity to the south. The two blocks are stuffed with modern restaurants, clubs, cafes and boutiques, on a delightful maze of cobbled streets. The modern facilities are accessorized with old bricks, stone gates and ornately carved wooden balconies from the dense warren of old courtyard houses that previously filled those blocks. What’s more, xintiandi’s night is extremely dynamic and colorful.Especially after 10 o’clock, people of different nationalities, of different colors, of different languages come here to enjoy the most beautiful night of shanghai.
