申请美国学校除了GT成绩，大学成绩，简历和自述信外，一般还要求至少三封的推荐信(少数学校只要两封)。推荐信在申请材料中的作用是不言而喻的，其他材料和数字是反映申请者自己的能力和素质的，而推荐信则是从熟悉申请者的第三者的角度对于申请者进行评论。具体讲，推荐信的作用有三个，一是从第三者角度对申请者自述信及成绩的确认和重新解释；二是对申请者的陈述和成绩进行补充；三是以同行的身份向录取委员会的教授提供自己的看法(尤其是在校教授的推荐信)，包括申请者的素质，动机以及申请者是否能从该课程获益等。作为录取委员会对申请者的考察标准之一，推荐信的作用是不可忽视的，好的推荐信会帮助申请者拿到学校的取录和奖学金，而差的，尤其是那些泛泛而论的，内容混乱的推荐信往往会导致申请功亏一篑，甚至会造成致命伤害。

很多学生认为推荐信无所谓，所以随便抄抄完事，有的甚至还有语法错误，殊不知如此做法，不但损害了推荐人的名声，同时也对自己的申请造成不可挽回的损失。还有很多人，包括一些留学咨询者，宣称美国教授一般不看中国学生的推荐信。这绝对是一种偏见。毫无疑问，对于泛泛而论，赞扬过度，内容重复的推荐信，教授可能会看两行就扔在一边，但对于那些真实、具体、中肯有力的推荐信，教授肯定会认真考虑的。在美国这个极重视个人信用的国度，可以说，推荐人以自己的信用向美国教授所作的推荐，是整个申请中的一个很大的变数。还有很多学生认为推荐信应该只有两三段长，绝对不能超过一页，殊不知，加上收件人推荐人地址，联系方式和职位后，一页纸还有多少空间？还能说明什么呢？如果不是推荐人和对方教授十分熟悉或有多年交道，这样的推荐信是起不到什么作用的，如果有作用，那也只能说明推荐人根本不愿意给你写推荐信。

找什么人写推荐信最好呢？对于研究类课程的申请，尤其是phD的申请，三封推荐信中应该至少有两封学术推荐，即要有两个教授或老师推荐你，推荐内容主要在你的学术能力和研究能力。但要注意，现在即使是研究性的课程，录取委员会也比较注重学生组成的多样性，所以在推荐时，不能仅限于课堂和科研，要顾及自己的课外活动和社会活动。对于诸如法学院、商学院的申请，则要注重工作推荐信，你老板的推荐信，实习单位领导的推荐则更为重要。

选择推荐人时要遵循熟悉、专业两大原则。

1、推荐人要熟悉你的学习和工作，熟悉你的动机和学习计划，要有比较密切的交流。推荐表中的“Howlonghaveyouknownthereferee﹖Inwhatcapacity﹖”就是问的推荐人和被推荐人之间的熟悉程度。在此基础上，如果推荐人是外国教授，而该教授和你申请的学校又很熟悉，这种推荐往往会起到意想不到的效果；如果推荐人和你申请的学校教授又比较熟悉，处理好了，推荐信则会有化腐朽为神奇的力量；如果推荐人虽然不熟悉对方的教授，但是该专业内很有名的专家(诸如拥有院士之类的头衔的)，经常参加国际交流，其推荐作用也不可忽视。不过，名人架子一般也很大，找申请人时，要先掂量掂量自己的分量。对于大部分来说，我认为找推荐人还是以找熟人为主，一是好说话，会很配合你的申请；二是在国外教授看来，很自然很合理。

相对于其他国家，美国大学研究生院的申请竞争特别激烈，奖学金、助学金的申请则更为激烈，其中变数也很多。在前面的几期文章中，我已经详细论述了各个环节的重要性和应对策略，这里我作一下总结，并再次重申一下美国研究生院申请的关键所在。要想从成百上千的申请者中脱颖而出，成功拿到录取和奖助学金，关键在于要对自己、对申请学校和专业有一个比较深刻认识，合理评估自己的实力、兴趣和学校的要求，据此制定一个合理的、扬长避短的申请策略，并在选校、选专业，简历、自述信的写作，和学校教授的联系（即”套词”），以及面试等各个环节做到极致。也只有这样，才能在激烈的竞争中取得成功。仅仅依靠自己的高分（TG，GPA）就能轻松拿到录取和奖学金的时代已经过去。每个人都应该意识到，从申请到拿到录取和奖助学金，很少人能够一蹴而就，而是要经过一个漫长的过程，在这个过程中自己应该始终保持积极，自信的心态，踏踏实实的做好自己的申请工作，才能最终成功拿到录取和奖助学金。认识自我，一个痛苦和觉醒的过程。认识自己，主要从三个方面进行考虑：

2、专业兴趣和爱好，也就是你要申请的专业，是你要在未来的2－8年中全身心投入学习的课程或科研。如果说，自己的优势和劣势比较好评估的话，专业选择就不那么容易了。首先，中国的本科教育分科是很细的，细的很不合理。而美国的本科教育，科系之间并没有那么详细区分，而且每个学生可以拿到2－3个学位，如果他愿意的话。本来本科教育就是基础教育，素质教育，然而中国的分科如此之细，以至许多学生更本不知道自己应该申请什么专业。解决这个问题，只有到学校网站查询，你感兴趣的专业有什么基础要求，也就是说，该研究生课程主要招收什么背景的学生，要求那些基础课程和专业基础课程，教授研究的项目主要用到什么方面的知识和技能，然后对照自己的课程和科研经历，就可以判断出自己是否适合或申请成功率如何。其次，很多中国学生不喜欢自己的专业，甚至很讨厌，但又不知道自己喜欢什么专业，即使知道自己喜欢的东西，也是很模糊，没有相关的知识和实践。我碰到无数的咨询客户回答我这个问题这样回答，”我喜欢偏文的专业”或”我喜欢篇理学科”等。这种情况就十分棘手，专业兴趣不清楚，根本无法申请。不清楚自己的专业方向，你无法展示自己的优势，也无法说服教授你的动机单纯。我的建议就是，要么参加工作，要么广泛阅读一下自己可能感兴趣的领域的出版物，或和内行人谈一谈，确定一下自己的专业方向，然后在考虑申请。

3、职业理想，也就是自己毕业之后想做什么样的工作，是想在大学作老师，作研究，还是到一个公司做技术或管理工作。这牵涉到你是申请PHD还是Master，是申请Professional课程，还是Research课程的关键。如果你认为自己不适合做科研或大学教学工作，显然你没有必要申请一个长达5年的PHD。如果你的专业是教育或语言方面的，你希望毕业后在美国当教师，那么根据自己的经济实力，要么申请一个M.Ed 或Doctor of Education（一般自费），毕业后可以拿到教师执照；或申请一个教育或语言学的MS或PHD,毕业后再考执照。

研究学校，是一个漫长而繁琐的工作。了解自我，并充分展示自我，这只是申请中的一半。留学申请还有另一半同样重要的事情，就是对于学校，系，专业和教授研究项目的了解。无论是自述信的写作，面试和套词，都不能没有关于学校和专业的信息，都不能没有你为什么选择该学校该专业的思考。一个完美的自述信应该是有一条无形的线把你的过去和你申请的学校和专业紧紧的连在一起，就像我在”上海姑娘的罗宾汉情结”中所论述的那篇自述信一样。美国和全世界成千上万的大学，为什么你单单申请这些学校，为什么单单对这个专业感兴趣？这是一个教授和签证官同样感兴趣的问题，也是你在申请中不可避免的一个部分。正因为，这么些学校，整个学校调查的过程就显得特别繁琐和沉重。所以我的建议是尽早开始学校调查工作，最好从大二或大三的上学期开始。具体查什么，怎么查才能尽快找到自己所需要的关键信息，怎样避免走弯路？这我已经在前面的选校部分做了详细说明，这里就不多说了。

可以说，所有的申请工作，包括文书材料，选校，套词，面试以及签证，都和以上我讲的两个认识紧密相连，实际上是这两个认识的自然结果。知己知彼，百战不殆，就是留
