随着国际商务活动日益频繁,商务信函翻译重要性也日益凸显。涉外商务信函,主要是指在国际商务活动中使用的各种函件,是指用信函的形式与外商与企业进行涉外商务活动和处理各类业务问题所使用的文书,如商务交往和联系;洽谈贸易,商务契约等。毫无疑问,涉外商务信函属于信息型文本,其主要特点概括起来包括:完整、简洁、客观、具体、礼貌、真实。本次涉外商务信函翻译涉及两个文本:一个是关于对方询价的回函,称为“发盘”,主要确认收到对方询价函,向对方介绍本公司产品样本、质量信息,期望双方能够达成贸易;一份是接受对方还盘的回函,内容主要包括接受对方还盘,确认顾客订单、商品数量、交货时间,要求开立信用凭证等信息。
文本分析:
通过查阅相关资料以及文本比较,本文应归属于信息类文本中的“商务函电文书”。涉外商务函电主要有四个部分组成:对方询盘——我方发盘——对方还盘——我方接受。本文初略涉及两个环节:我方发盘、我方接受,其内容主要涉及产品介绍、合作洽谈明细、订单数量、信用证、会签存档等事宜,双方来函洽谈目的是达成贸易协议。基于文本分析,我们对要翻译的文本的“类型”、“特点”以及及文本所传达的信息和目的有了宏观的了解,这对于接下来的翻译工作来说尤为重要。因此,我们在翻译此类文本的过程中务必注意商务函电的特点,在尊重商务函电“客观性”、“简洁性”与“真实性”的基础上,注重商务函电内容的“完整性”与商务洽谈的“委婉”与“礼貌”。其次,在词汇方面,注重词语使用的规范、准确,主义专业术语运用,如“询价函”、“还盘”、“信用证”等词的使用,避免无疑;注重商务洽谈套语的处理和使用,如:请会签后寄回我方存档;如约履行,敬请放心;如蒙贵方......我们不胜感激。
翻译评估:
通过文本比较分析,我将自己的两份译稿做了以下分析:
1.贵方9月10日询价函已收悉,首先对贵方有兴趣购买我方皮鞋和手提包表示感谢。
译文1.We have received your inquiry of sept.10th, and thanks for your interest in our leather shoes and handbags.译稿2.Your inquiry of sep.10th has receive our attention,and thank you for your interest in our leather shoes and handbags.(注:译稿2 为商务翻译实用教程的案例)
译稿3:I have a acknowledge receipt of your inquiry, and thank you for your interest in our leather shoes and handbags.分析:该句结构简单,并无任何难词、难句,主要的难点集中在“贵方9月10询价函已获悉”,首先该句省略了“获悉”的主语,因此在翻译时如何处理该主语,成为该翻译的“关键”,其次这里还涉及一个商务信函翻译套语的使用,通过查找平行文本,我发现对于“贵方9月10询价函已获悉”的翻译,比较倾向于译稿2和译稿3的翻译,因为译文2与译文3都很好地注重了商务信函翻译的客观性,但在委婉与礼貌的角度,个人认为译文3既兼顾了客观性又做到了“委婉”。
2.今天将寄往你处一份配有插图的出口产品目录。我方所提供的产品均用优质皮革制成。鲜艳的色泽、优雅的设计,加之精湛的制作工艺,使这些产品必能满足贵方市场流行的需求。
译文1.A copy of our illustration export catalogue will be sent to you today.All the product we provide are made from leather of high quality.Our product ornamenting with bright colors, elegant designs and decorating with exquisite craftwork can meet the requirement of fashion trade of yours.译文2.A copy of our illustration export catalogue will be sent to you today.All the product we provide are made from leather of high quality.The bright colors and elegant designs together with the super workmanship can meet the requirement of fashion trad such as yours.分析:该句结构清晰,翻译的难点主要在于,可能在于“需求”一词的推敲,对于“需求”一词,有两种常见翻译“demand”和“requirement”,通过查阅相关资料以及商务文本翻译,我们发现,两者常见于商务英语翻译实践中,“market demand”翻做“市场需求”,二者在语气上“demand”强于“requirement”,而这里句中隐含有满足对方“需求、要求”的意思,顾翻译为“requirement”更为恰当。
3.我们接受贵方3月8日的还盘,现非常高兴地与贵方确认我们双方已就男式皮包买卖达成交易。
译文1.We have accepted your counter-offer of march 8.And now, we are pleased to confirm you that the transaction of the captioned goods with you has concluded.译文2.We have accepted your counter-offer of march 8.Now, we are pleased to confirm having concluded the transaction of the captioned goods with you has concluded.分析:该句主要涉及“还盘”的专业术语,固有格式,由于专业术语以及商务翻译方面平行文本的积累和整理不足,我在翻译时,没有意识到在开头要写出“Re:Leather Bags for Men ”一词。
4.同时,我们想要强调的是,贵方信用证必须在本月底前开到我处,否则,装运将会延迟。
译文1.Meanwhile, we shall be stress that your L/C must reach here by the end of this month.译文2.However, we shall be stress that your L/C establish with us by the end of this month.分析:该句翻译,主要问题集中在对转折性连词“同时”的理解上,必须根据语境,发挥译者能动性将其翻译“however”而“and” or“meanwhile”;以及“开信用证”这一商务信函套语的翻译。
5.随函附上一式两份我方第03M15号销售确认书。请会签后寄回我方一份存档。

通过两次翻译报告心得的撰写,我逐渐学会了如何分析文本类型,如何找出文本特点,如何进行译文对比分析,如何查找和积累平行文本。这两次翻译文本都属于“信息文本”中的商务信函,因为不明白如何翻译商务信函,我查阅了一些资料,知道了什么是“询盘”、“发盘”、“还盘”、“接受”;通过老师的课堂讲授,我逐渐清楚了传真的几大要素,也开始去了解相关地翻译理论与策略。
针对此次翻译,我认为自己较第一次有所进步,能正确进行文本类型、特点分析,能注重商务翻译格式以及商务翻译的特点,而问题依然存在。我将自己的问题集中罗列如下:
首先,还是商务方面知识储备过少,商务翻译实践经验缺乏。由于商务知识的积累和实践经验的缺乏,因此使得自己在商务信函翻译过程中很“盲从”,甚至有时候对一些常见的用语感到无从下手,无法准确地翻译出原文本的特点,存在用语不准确,冗杂现象;其次,我认为合格的译者应该有敏锐的观察力、熟练的汉英转换表达能力以及对词语的词义、词性、词语情感色彩的驾驭能力,而我在这方面非常缺乏;再次,专业术语积累以及商务函电套语、同义词辨析的积累不够,所以在翻译时有时候出现“词穷”现象;最后,自己的翻译效率不高,两个短小、简单的商务文本,我却花了几乎半天的时间翻译,这样的翻译对于商务翻译来说,几乎可以说是无效翻译,我应该提高自己的翻译效率,这也是我以后努力的目标和方向。
针对自身问题,我认为自己应该从三个方面着手:勤学习,勤积累,勤练习;在平时学习中注重同义词辨析积累,注重商务、国际贸易方面的积累;注重“商务信函”翻译平行文本积累;养成查资料、收集同类型资料的习惯;提高翻译效率。这是我在此次翻译过程中的总结与反思,希望以此自鉴,勉励自己,不断实践、改进、提升自身翻译实践能力。

商务信函的翻译
一、何为商务信函
商务信函是商务活动中书面交流信息的主要手段之一,是企业对外公共宣传关系中重要的手段,对于树立良好的公司形象有着极为重要的意义。
商务信函涉及商务活动的各个环节,贯穿商务活动的始终,内容广泛,通常包括建立业务关系、询盘、发盘、还盘、受盘、订立合同、保险、装运、索赔等方面。
二、商务信函的要求
1.语言严谨准确
商务信函要求语言表达严谨准确,但在商务信函中恰当使用模糊语言,可以使语言表达更加客观准确、灵活生动、礼貌得体。
(1)商务英语信函经常以意义相同或相近的书面词语代替基本词汇和口语词汇,如以inform或advise代替tell,以duplicate代替copy,以dispatch代替send,以otherwise代替or;以介词短语代替简单的介词,如以as for,in respect to,in connection with和with regarding to等代替about等。例如:
We are pleased to advise you that your order NO.105 has been dispatched in accordance with your instruction.我们很高兴地通知你们:第105号订单货物已遵照你方指示运出。
We will meet you half way by offering a discount of 5% in view of our long pleasant relations.鉴于我们之间长期愉快的业务关系,本公司将酌情考虑给予5%的折扣。
(2)商务信函中经常使用here/there +介词构成的复合词,如hereafter,hereby,hereunder,hereto,hereinafter,herewith,thereafter,therein,therefrom等。例如:
All offers and sales are subject to the terms and conditions printed on the reverse side hereof.所有报盘和销售均应遵守本报价单背面所印的条款。
In such a case, Seller is bound to reimburse Buyer for any loss or damage sustained therefrom.在此次情况下,卖方负责偿还买方由此所遭受的损失。
2.内容清楚简洁
商务信函在内容表达上要言简意赅,能够传达足够信息且能够做到机智的表达。通常是直接简练,开门见山,忌过分修饰。一般根据写信者所要表达的中心
思想分段。正文每段的文字不会过长,尤其是开头和结尾,更常以简短为宜。
例如:“By this letter we would ask you to consider our proposal.”就不如”Please consider our proposal.” 简洁;而“Please let us know whenever we can be helpful.” 则比“Whenever there is any way in which we can be of assistance, please feel free to contact us.”表达好一些。
3.富于外贸术语和专业词汇
商务信函用词表意准确、专业性强,主要表现在使用大量的专业术语、行话、外来词、缩略语以及一般词语在商务英语语境中的特殊用法。
(1)专业术语类:
We shall cover TPND on your order.我们将为你方的货物投保盗窃和提货不着险。
It would be appreciated if you would let us know by returning your lowest possible price for the following goods on FOB London.请报下列商品伦敦船上交货之最低价。
(2)外来词类:
拉丁语的status quo(现状),意大利语的del credere(保付货价的),汉语中的litchi(荔枝),tungoil(桐油),mango(芒果)等。
(3)行话:
长期的函电交往使人们在使用术语上形成共识,本来意义差异很大的词汇在特定的语境中所表达的内涵和外延却非常相似。
Offer, quotation表示“报价,发盘”
Pamphlet, brochure, booklet, sales literature
表示商家用于宣传介绍自己公司或产品的“说明材料”
Shipment和consignmen表示“所发出的货物”
Financial standing/reputation/condition/position
表示公司的“资信财务情况”
Fulfill/complete/execute an order用于表示“执行订单”
A draft contract或a specimen contract 表示“合同样本”
(4)数量词的大量运用:
商务信函中的时间、价格、数量、金额、规格等问题贯穿商贸活动始终,数字的表达应言之确凿,避免摸棱两可,体现商务信函准确性。
四、商务信函的翻译原则
商务信函属于比较拘谨正式的公文体,行文端正,用字洗练,一般遵守商务英语的写作原则,即5“C”原则:正确(correctness)、简洁(conciseness)、清楚(clearness)、完整(completeness)、礼貌(courtesy)。具体来讲,有以下几方面内容。
1.遵循“忠实,通顺”的翻译标准
例如:“We have obtained your name and address from the Singapore Chamber of Commerce, who have told us that you wish to import electric goods manufactured in China.”原译为:“我方从新加坡商会处获悉贵方的名称和地址,得知贵方有意进口中国制造的产品。”此句的翻译应该说非常通顺,注重了信函的语言特点,但是它并没有做到忠实的原则,译文中漏译了“electric”。再如:“I have the honor to notify you that we have commenced a business as commission agents for British goods.” 原译为:“我很荣幸地告知你我们已经开始了一项业务,来作为英国货物的代理”。这句的翻译中绝对忠实于原文,但却不能够达到通顺的要求,让人读起来感到特别生硬,须调整语序译为:“我们已经开始了经营代销英国货物的业务,特此通告。”
2.注意信函结构程式化的翻译
英汉两种语言在信函结构程式上有一定的差别。如收(寄)信人的地址、写信时间及他们的位置都是不一样的,需要我们在翻译时做出适当的调整,以适应目的语的格式规范。例如:把英语地址由小到大的顺序译为汉语的由大到小的顺序,或者有时根据汉语的习惯把地址栏省去;把时间也由英语当中的日/月/年或月/日/年的顺序改译为汉语中的年/月/日的顺序。例如:

3.运用套译的翻译方法
(1)称呼语的套译
英文信函中常用的是“Dear Sir(s)/Madam/Gentlemen/Ladies”等,此处的“Dear”只是一种表示对收信人的尊称,是一种礼貌的习惯性表达方法,并不等同于汉语中的“亲爱的”,因此,根据汉语习惯我们可以套译为:“尊敬的阁下/先生/女士/夫人”,有时也可以套译为:敬启者、谨启者、执事先生、尊鉴、台鉴等。
(2)结尾敬语的套译
结尾敬语的表达方式有很多,例如:Yours faithfully,Faithfully yours,Yours truly,Best regard,Sincerely,Best wishes,Yours sincerely,Kind regards等等。它们可以直接套译为:“谨上、敬上、谨启、顺致敬意”等,而不能直接按照字面意思进行翻译。
(3)信函正文中一些敬辞和谦辞的套译
商务信函的一大特色就是措辞婉约、注重礼节、多用套语。英语商务信函中
频繁使用 appreciate,esteem,favor,grateful,kindly,oblige,please,pleasure,Allow us...,Permit us to...,May we...等等。而汉语中常用的一些敬辞包括:“您鉴、贵方、贵国、贵公司、阁下、敬复、敬悉、惠请、惠函、惠顾、赐复、奉告、承蒙、恭候”等等;常见的一些谦辞包括:“敝人、敝公司、敝处、卑职、愚见、拙见、拙作、拜读、过奖”等等。例如:
We have pleasure in acknowledging receipt of your esteemed favor of the 8th May.敬悉贵公司5月8日来函。
Kindly provide us with all possible information on your market.惠请告知你方市场详情。
4.要注意礼貌原则
礼貌原则,分为六大准则:策略准则、慷慨准则、赞誉准则、谦逊准则、一致准则、同情准则。这些准则解释了有的交际语言比较礼貌的原因,当然这并不意味着最礼貌的形式总是最合适的,因此在商务信函的翻译中我们也要这样对待。
(1)策略准则和慷慨准则
这两项准则常用于指令和承诺,对于咨询信息、发盘还盘、商议付款条件、索取免费产品以及就赔付方式进行交涉等方面比较适用。如:
Should you desire, we would be pleased to send you catalogs together with export prices and estimated shipping costs for these items.若贵方需要,本公司将乐意寄上目录以及这些项目的出口价格以及预估的运输费。
(2)赞誉准则和谦逊准则
这两项准则要求尽量减小对别人的贬损,夸大对别人的赞扬以及缩小对自己的赞扬,夸大对自己的贬损。在商务信函中这两项准则常见于试探合作意向、商谈合作细节或是感谢信当中。如:
We were pleased to know from your letter of 24th October of your interest in our products and enclose the catalogue and pricelist asked for.Also enclosed you will find details of our conditions of sale and terms of payment.奉读10月24日来函,欣悉你们对我们的产品有兴趣。兹附上你们所要求的商品目录和价目表,并附上我们的售货条件和付款方式。
(3)一致准则和同情准则
根据这一原则,贸易双方应尽量扩大一致,减少分歧。如:
We have gone into the matter and we are prepared to make you a reasonable compensation, but not the amount you claimed, because we cannot see why the loss should be 50% more than the actual value of the goods.我们已对此事进行调查,愿意对贵方给予合理赔偿,不过不是贵方索赔的金额,因为我们看不出损失何以超过货物实际价值的一半以上。
写信人在指出对方索赔金额数目不合理之前首先表明愿意承担相应责任,目的在于尽量消除谈判的障碍,从而扩展了双方的一致,确保了合作的顺利进行。
