JACK MA=J H: By now you ‘ve probably heard of Alibaba, the Chinese Internet giant that’s able to reach millions upon millions of previously unreachable Chinese consumers.The company went republic this month on the New York Stock Exchange and became of the most valuable in the world and Alibaba is just getting started.Everything about Alibaba story is unconventional,beginning with its founder Jack Ma, who gained global celebrity status these past ten days as his image became ubiquitous on business news channels and media outlets across America.We got to know Jack Ma before the onslaught,beginning over a year ago in China, where he talked with us about his relationship with the Chinese government and his unorthodox philosophy,which surprisingly,gives share holders almost no say over how he runs the company.J:If you want to invest us ,we believe customer number one, employee number two , shareholder number three.If they don’t want to buy that, they can sell us.H:In the U.S.,the shareholder is usually first.J:yeah, and I think they are wrong.The shareholder, good.I respect them.But they are the third.Because if you take care of the customers,take care of the employees,shareholders will be taken care of.H : Ma’s unconventional view didn’t stop wall street from pouring $25 billion into his company,now listed on the New York Stock Exchange as BABA.It’s an Internet shopping behemoth,a collection of online market places where buyers and sellers connect to do business.Most of the company ‘s money comes from advertising and small transactions fees.On its most popular website,Taobao,users talk to each other ,barter and engage in a way that doesn’t happen on American e-commerce websites,and Alibaba says there are close to a billion products for sale.H:If I’m buying a house,I can do everything ,from finding an architect to buying doorknobs to furnishing the entire thing from start to finish.What else?

H:It’s now the biggest e-commerce film in the world, dwarfing the combined sales of Amazon and ebay.And Alibaba has helped created hundreds of millions of Internet consumers, a whole new class in Communist China,people who never access to modern commerce before Jack Ma came along.And now you have 500 registered users ?

J :yes, it’s only a litter bit more than 40 percent of China population and we need more.We have over 100 million people visiting the site, shopping everyday coming.And it’s just the beginning.When Jack Ma dreamed up Alibaba in 1999, the online world looked nothing like it does today.The most popular search engine was Yahoo, not Google.There are no I pods, I phones and I pads.Only 4out of ten American homes have Internet connections.And th world wide web barely reached all the way to China, where retail stores were rare outside the big cities.For most of the country, there was no such thing as package delivery or credits cards.The only way to buy anything was face to face and in cash.J: When we started the e-commerce,nobody believed that China would have e-commerce cause people believe in GuanXi, face to face, and all kinds of network in traditional ways.There is no trust system in China.H: He had to overcome centuries of tradition by showing Chinese buyers and sellers that they could trust Alibaba with their money in this new virtual world.He did it by guaranteeing the transactions and creating his own payment system,an escrow account where Alibaba holds the buyers’ money until the goods are delivered.J: Everyday we finish more than 30million transactions.And that means that there, you are buying from somebody you have never seen , you are giving products tho the person you have never met.And there are some guys you never know that he is going to take your products to that place to that person.I want to tell people that trust if here.cause it’s all about trust..H:Now ,rich and poor, will access to the Internet and something to sell, can connect with hundreds of millions of potential customers on one of Ma’s websites.Ordinary people in China, who never had a way to do business with each other before, today have a stake in the online world.That idea is revolutionary.It creates millions of jobs and made Ma a hero to millions of China.So this is your old stomping ground right ? We met Ma in Hongzhou, an ancient city in southeastern China famous for its beauty.This is where he grew up poor in the 1960s,during the chaos of Maozedong’s Cultural revolutionary, when the country was cut off from the west.Then in 1972, Richard Nixon came to his hometown.It was the first visit by the U.S.president t to Communist China, and the city became a mecca for foreign tourists.Through them, 12-year-old Jack Ma got his first glimpse of a world beyond China.He told us how he told himself English, walking to foreigners and offering free tours in exchange for free lessons.Unlike many successful Chinese entrepreneurs, Jack Ma never studied in the U.S..He also had no status , money and connections.The only other way to get ahead in China was education and he failed the collage entrance examination 中间省略简短对话

M: well, I’ve never got one cents form the government.Never got one cents from China banks.So i am very independent.H : that was true when Alibaba began.And most of its capital still comes from abroad.But more recently some of its small investors have included institutions with ties to China’s ruling elites.Alibaba also benefited from Chinese government policies that make it difficult for foreign competitors to operate there.Ma explained how he walks a fine line with Beijing.中间省略简短对话

尊敬的习主席、姜会长、鲍尔森主席,各位企业界的同行:

很荣幸参加今天的会议。

昨天晚上我度过了一个“西雅图不眠夜”。整整20年了,20年前我还是一名老师,第一次来美国就来到了西雅图。在市中心一栋写字楼里,我人生第一次使用电脑,第一次上网,发现当时的互联网上几乎没有中国的信息。在感受到互联网巨大魅力的同时,也让我发现了市场机会所在。回国后,我借了2万元人民币开始创业,坚持到现在。

43年前,尼克松访问我的家乡杭州。杭州那时候来了很多外国游客,我正好上初中,但英语老师是我们中文老师客串的。坚持在宾馆门口给外国游客做免费导游练习英文9年之后,我不仅掌握了一些语言能力,更了解了美国的文化。今天想来,没有当时的中美邦交正常化,没有对外开放,就不太可能有现在的阿里巴巴。

这两件改变了我个人命运的大事,都跟中美友好合作分不开。

可以说,西雅图是我创业梦想开始的地方,互联网启发了我,在中国20年的坚持,我们梦想成真。中国人说中国梦,美国人说美国梦,其实,本质上中国梦和美国梦,都是追求美好生活,都追求更健康,更快乐,更幸福。

生意同样也很不简单。但今天看到的问题,就是留给我们的机会,就看我们是着眼于未来,还是执著在当下。我想也正是因为当年两国领导人对未来中美关系的远大战略构想,才有今天的成果。我永远相信只有把目光放在明天,才能解决今天的问题。

同样对中国经济的认识,除了一些误区,还有一点是中美之间的文化差异。美国认为中国经济有下行压力,中国人就不消费了。但事实上并非如此。阿里巴巴平台的消费者数据显示,今年以后,中国的消费信心依然强劲,上升趋势明显,在投资和出口放缓的大背景下,内需消费不减反增。这个美国人是不理解的,他们想不到。因为美国人善于花明天的钱,花别人的钱,但是中国人的危机意识是历史文化造成的,我们总是在花昨天的钱,花自己存下来的钱。中国人喜欢存钱,中国是居民储蓄最高的国家之一,中国老百姓存钱为了困难的时候能够花。因此你会发现,经济困难了,但中国人仍然有钱花。

昨天,习主席说,目前中国有近三亿中等收入人群,未来10-15年会增加到近5亿中等收入。这部分人收入是中等了,但消费水平还是初等。这里面有巨大的消费潜力,不仅是中国经济转型的巨大动力,也会对世界经济的拉动带来巨大作用。

一、如何评价杭州

Hangzhou is lucky enough to be one of the first group of cities open to the world。

Because Nixon and Mao Zedong signed the Agreement。这源于尼克松和毛泽东推动签署的中美《联合公报》。So they made Hangzhou open to the world。是他们的努力让杭州向世界敞开了大门。

1972,when Mao Zedong and President Nixon had decided to make China and USA agree to work together to be the bright futre。

I think this G20 Meeting has high expectations from the world。Especially at this moment of the world economy。

And I personally believe globalization is a great thing for the world。而我认为全球化对世界而言是一件伟大的事情。

The only thing is that: how we can improve globalization to enable more small business,more young people to get involved。

唯一的问题是要如何提升全球化来让更多中小企业和更多年轻人参与其中。What if we can use a new mechanism,a new technology to enable 1 billion,or 2 billion,or 3 billion people to do trade。

I think the EWTP should be sponsored and enforced by the business,and supported by the government。

People keep on asking me why Alibaba is not in Beijing,why not in Shanghai。(But)in Hangzhou。

Because this city has entrepreneurship。It‘s so friendly to private sectors。

So I think we got great talents。我们有优秀的人才。

But Hangzhou is so powerful,so influential to China Economy,to China Culture。

Because in Song Dynasty,1000 years ago,we were the capital of China。早在1000年前的宋朝,杭州曾是中国的首都。

And at that time we were the most splendid and prosperous city in China。在那个时候,杭州就是中国最辉煌、最辉煌的城市。

Hangzhou,today,has become the driving force of China New Economy because of e-commerce,because of Alibaba。

(00:00-12:36)Thank you, professor.It’s my great honor to be here.So when I listen to the introduction, I’m a little bit confused whether it’s talking to the most powerful people, influential people.And first let me introduce myself.I’m 100% made in China, and I learn my English by myself when I was a kid from most of the American tourists when they visited my city called Hangzhou.So in the early 1970s, when a lot of foreign visitors visited the city, so every morning I got up early and become the tour guide for them for 9 years.Three guy, they told me English and I show them around.And I learn about the language;I learn the culture.And I learn how to think differently because everything I learn from my schools when I was a kid was different from the things I learn from foreign tourists.Cause my father and my school teachers told me that China was the richest country in the world, and we’re going to liberate the world, just like today’s North Korea.And later I find out that was not true.So since then I’m a little bit different from most of the Chinese.People say, Jack, you’re different from the Chinese.But the American people look at me like a very typical Chinese.Chinese look at me like American people because I understand the culture here.So I’ve never even one day train in the states, but I learn a lot.I got my Internet concept from the States.Well first let me introduce a little bit about Alibaba Group.Alibaba was founded in 1999, 18 founders in my apartment.And we just have an idea we believe Internet is going to change China.Internet is going to booming.So nobody believed us.Everybody say, well, you know, how can you do Internet in China because Chinese government censorship is decent.There’s no reason for us to survive.And today people say, Jack, you’re visionary;how could you tell e-commerce Internet 10 years ago.And I said… I think we’re like a blind man riding on the back of blind tigers.Just by accident.We focused, we make the thing happen and today from 18 people now today we have more than 20,000 people.And we grow from one company to 5 companies right now.The first company is called Alibaba.com and it focuses on small and medium-sized companies.Helping small and medium-sized companies, we have all 37 or 38 million register SMEs in China using our services.Outside China we have more than 12 million SMEs using our services.So, well, our business model’s very simple.One side is China side, is a domestic trading.Anything you want to buy, anything you want to sell, you can use the website in China.It’s like a market place, like E-bay.But E-bay is C2C;we are B2B.The Alibaba B2B: one is China domestic trading;the other is import and export.It’s a marketplace for global purchasing, global buying.It grows probably we listed 3 years ago in the HK market, and we were very lucky because the day we listed;the market was good.So our stock price grows from $13.5 to $40 without doing anything good.Just go up.And three months later, our stock from $40 to $3 without doing anything bad.Just, you know, just up and down.And there was the rock and roll.And now the company’s stabilized, we still focus on e-commerce, still focus on SMEs.But except the company, the other 4 companies are private companies.The other company which we own 100% is called Taobao.com which probably most Chinese people here have heard about it.It is much more influential than Alibaba.com in China.We have more than 300 million register users.It started with the C-C, but 95% is from B-C.And 6 years ago, we started to compete with E-bay.E-bay, a lot of money… At that time their market can be 80 billion dollars.They came to China, they said they would compete with Alibaba, and we started the business from zero and we got like 2 or 3% market share.Now we have 90% market share which E-bay have like 2 or 3 market share.So Taobao is a combination of Emerson, E-bay, and Google and Face book.It’s a community on line and we have 43 million unique visitors visit the site shopping every day.And we finish 8 million transactions per day.And logistically last year the package delivery in the whole China is 2 billion packages’ delivery on the road.We created 1.1 billion, so we have like 55% market share on this delivery.It’s growing very fast and we already have like 100% growth in the past 7 years.And we will keep it 100% this year.And the third company we have is called Alipays, like a PayPal.It’s a very stupid model.5 years ago, I found that it’s so difficult to do transactions on line because people don’t trust each other.The banking system is so bad.The infrastructure of finance is also bad.So I was worried about what I’m going to do.The bank has the license to do this.We know how to do business, but we don’t have the license.So in the end, people say, Jack, don’t touch that area.If you touch the area, you will be in prison because financial sector is very risky in China.And I say put me in the prison;let’s do it.And we do transparently, we do everything clear in order to make sure that the government is happy, people are happy.So we work with the banks, you know, close to 70 banks in China.Today we have 400 million register users and we are the largest on-line third party payment without any business model.We just want to help people.That makes the banks very unhappy because we distract the business model.In the world, for a good bank, about 60 or 70% of the revenues are from the services.But in China, about 60 or 70 or 80% of revenues come from the loaning.So we go inside, go into the service.The forth company is called Aliclub computing which we just founded 2 years ago.Because we have the data from small and medium-sized companies, because we have the data from Taobao consumers and we have the data from Alipays, the data we collected become so influential that we want all the consumers to share, to understand the data from SME and let the consumers understand SME data.So we’ve been focusing on clock computing.And the 5th company we have is called Yahoo China which we were quite familiar with 5 years ago.So these are the group and Alibaba is listed.The other four are private.It’s pretty good.We’re lucky in China that we combine, you know, like Emerson, E-bay, PayPal and altogether in a same group.70% market share in China is E-commerce and it is still keep on going very fast.What are the reasons people say why you survived in China, why you succeeded, I think, one of the key reasons we survive is that we always believe: customer No.1, employee No.2, shareholder No.3.And this is the first philosophy and to now we still trust it truly because it’s the customer that stays with us.It’s the customer we create.Because in Internet in China in the pasting years, there are three main businesses: one is focusing on proto sides like Yahoo and today we have Sina, Sohu and Netease.They focus on the news and I think it’s so difficult to do the news in China unless you are in Beijing.And you know the government, you know the policy and we will never understand what the government policy is.And we say, OK, let’s stay away from the proto sides.The second business which in China is very popular and which probably is the most unique business in the world is on-line gaming.And I don’t believe that model and I don’t like that because in China in one family, if all the kids play on-line games, it’s so bad.And my kids, my son and his schoolmates all stick to the on-line games.I think yes we can make a lot of money, but I just don’t want my kids to focus on line.So we did not do that.China has already got enough companies focusing on line.Almost all the Internet companies have on-line games.We are the only company that does not have on-line games.So the only we can do is e-commerce and e-commerce is so tough and so difficult to do with.And 10 years ago e-commerce in the world is B2B.They all want to focus on big companies.They all want to focus on buyers.The value they created is to save the cost for buyers.So we do the opposite.And we believe that USA is very good at playing basketball.We should focus on playing Ping-Pong because we should not always play the same.So we said in China we don’t have big companies, so we should focus on small and medium-sized companies.We should not help buyers;we should help sellers because China wants to sell things abroad.SMEs want to sell things abroad.So we focus on small and medium size;we focus on helping suppliers.And the value created is not saving the cost because SMEs know how to save the cost much better than you do.They want to learn how to sell and how to make money.So then we focus on SMEs;we focus on supplies;we focus on creating money for them.So these are the focus we stayed on.And everything for the first three years we don’t have any business model.We have zero revenue for three years.It was so tough;it was so difficult.The only thing encouraging us to continue is letters, emails of thanks.We’ve received hundreds of thousands of emails of thanks every week, every month.People thank us because of creating jobs.Because of us, their businesses grow.And you know, we did not get any money, but if our customers make money, we are happy.And in the fourth year, we started to make money.So the second thing is employees.I’m not trained to be a hi-tech guy.I hate hi-tech.And my wife bought me an IPod;I still don’t know how to use it.And I never use PowerPoint because I don’t know how to do it.Every time I use it, something is wrong with the PowerPoint.Every time I use it, something’s wrong with the PowerPoint.So I don’t know how to speak.I’m trained to be a high school teacher and I know nothing about technology.The only thing I can use in the computer is sending and receiving emails abroad.That’s it.That’s enough, right? And 80% of the people in the world like me, we hate technology.We want technology work for us.We should not work for the technology.马云哥伦比亚商学院演讲
