美国留学申请心得-托福实用篇

很早之前就想写个留学申请的心得体会,但当时还是觉得有了结果再写比较好。如今我已经收到弗吉尼亚大学的offer(1月25收到,应该是第一轮),有这么个好学校“保底”,我也敢放心的写下我的感想了,希望可以为后来人所借鉴。

首先说一下本人的背景,以作参考:211+985本科,基础自然科学中的一门,GPA 3.6/4.0,major GPA 3.7/4.0,排名专业Top 5。GRE General考砸了,V和Q均有硬伤„„我的专业GRE Sub属于必考,分数够用。两次可取的托福成绩分别为100(27+26+20+27),99(25+27+22+25)。

我是在得知GRE成绩后,经好友推荐和张伟用老师取得了联系。当时真是有一种万念俱灰的感觉,连Q都很悲剧的GRE,我一直以为这是个拖后腿的成绩。好在张老师一直在鼓励我,才坚定了我继续冲击牛校的信心。而后来我也就此决定和金东方签约,此篇文章也献给金东方的老师们,和你们合作一直很愉快,多谢老师们!或许是出于厌学或是太过热爱理科学习,本人的英语从高中就开始悲剧,位处班级中下游,高考(微博)也不到120分(满分150)。大一浑浑噩噩连过了四六级,四级成绩还说的过去,500+,六级成绩450+。英语一向是给我拖后腿的科目,也经常被我忽略。写这些主要是为了给在英语方面无天资的同学们一些鼓励,我这水平都能考到托福100,你们也行!时间:我是二战托福考到100分的,累积复习时间约一个半月(算上一战的底子)。保险起见,我认为备考托福,两个月的周期是够用的。TPO 1-19做了两遍。

单词:万物之本。虽说考托福不需要额外的词汇量,但考过GRE的朋友再考托福就爽一些也证明了词汇量的重要性。起码阅读词汇题基本可以做到秒杀。在此我只想纠正一个错误概念,GRE单词没用是纯扯淡。至少我在考完GRE之后再看英文文字的时候总会有恍然大悟的感觉:“哦,这个单词在弄GRE的时候背过!”关于单词的一个诀窍就是,试试杨鹏的《17天搞定GRE单词》方法。我最后只有一个半月准备笔考,所以是在没时间了,逼得自己真的17天过了6遍GRE单词。好多人都没坚持住这17天(三个list为一组),或许你可以试试25天(两个list为一组),这样负担会小很多。但杨鹏背单词的方法(按照艾宾豪特遗忘曲线车轮式背诵)还是非常科学的,并且记得牢!以下再从听说读写四个方面谈谈托福的备战。听:

核心就是:听写是提高听力水平的最有效途径。按照精听、半精听、泛听几个步骤,听力水平的进步指日可待也。

精听:方法很简单,去小马过河等托福备考网站下载老托福的听力段子(新托福听力段子太 长)和别人默写完毕的标答,每天听写一篇即可。我建议用电脑听写,还能练习英文打字速度。网上也有很多下载听写软件的资源,把你听好的和标答先后粘到软件里,电脑会自动帮你检查。每天听一小时,坚持一个月,你的听力便会有大进展。刚开始肯定会错很多,所以不要太过打击,因为大部分人都这样。

半精听:听写属于精听范畴,另有推荐科学美国人60s,半精听范畴。那个语速很快,本人当时还要准备sub考试和课题研究,就没做。科学美国人60s的使用方法是,开始先对照文字多听几篇,最后能做到复述出来即可。

泛听:有时间的同学再推荐进行泛听练习,去网易公开课板块找你感兴趣的科目,去听听国外老师的讲课。记住要在听的同时记笔记,这样能帮你集中注意力。这件事也可以在你复习累的时候做做,寓教于乐,何乐不为。

其实看美剧、英剧、听英文歌也是可以提高听力水平的,不过那样提高起来周期很长。在我看来起码需要一年以上。故而不推荐此法作为短期内托福听力备战的方法。说:

我的speaking分数最后也算不上多好,简要说一下我的“必杀技”吧。就是事先把机经查好,按照机经的话题挨个准备段子写好。念段子同时录音,然后把录音放到自己的Mp3里来回来去的听。听自己念段子不费时间,我是见缝插针,刷牙洗脸、吃饭喝汤、去自习室的路上都听着。久而久之,自己的段子就能脱口而出了。另外记得机经的段子是可以相互借鉴的,不必拘泥于机经。本人三战托福的时候就碰见自己完全没练过的话题,但转念一想之前准备的XX段子可以借鉴,于是乎东借一段西借一段,最后口语的第一部分得了good,口语总分也涨了两分。当然,多准备一些段子是非常有必要的,省得到时候借鉴都不知道去哪里找。读:

我阅读一向不是很好,在此着实不敢指点江山。在我看来,提高阅读的唯一途径就是多读,TPO来回来去的做。刚开始会错很多,做到最后,就好了。在此向大家推荐一本书,杨鹏的GRE长难句教程。很不幸,这本书我没坚持使用完。各位如果有时间,把长难句里面的句子读通读顺,甚至背下来。则阅读功底定会大大增长。写:

托福写作是有一定套路的。不像雅思要求那么高,还需要语言优美等亮点并存才给予高分。托福写作:把你想表达的东西表达清楚即可。有人说托福大作为拼的是字数,或许有道理,我只给出我的数据给大家个参考:一战大作文350词,等级fair,总分记不清了;二战托福大作文约520词,等级是good,总分27;三战托福大作文450词,也是good,总分25(小作文莫名其妙给了个fair所以低了两分)。另外在上新东方GRE写作课时老师教的一个方法值得推荐。利用好《新概念英语》,将里面中文翻译好的课文自己汉译英一遍,然后再参考亚历山大的原作,看看人家的用词和你的用词是怎么不一样的。说白了就是,相当于亚历山大在给你改作文。这对提高语言水平很有帮助。
