Part I Reading Comprehension(40%)Directions:There are four reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions. For each of them there are four suggested anseers marked ABCand D.Choose the best answer to each question.Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage: A few years ago it was common to speak of a generation gap between young people and their elders.Parents said that children did not respect and listen to them, while children said that their parents did not understand them at all. What had gone wrong? Why had the generation gap suddenly appeared?Actually ,the generation gap has been around for a long time. Many people argue that it is built into every part of our society. One important cause of the generation gap is the opportunity that young people have to choose their own ways of life.In a more traditional society.when children grow up ,they are expected to live in the same area as their parents,to marry people that their parents know and like, and often to continue the family jobs.In our society, young people often travel great distances for their education.move out of the family at an early age, marry or live with people whom their patents have never met ,and choose jobs different from those of their parents. In our society, parents often expect their children to do better than they did ,to find better jobs,to make more money and to do all the things they awere unable to do.Often ,that is another cause of the gap between them.Often ,they discover that they have very little in common with each other. Finally ,the speed at which changes take place in our society is the third cause of the gap between the generations. In a traditional culture, senior people are valued for their knowledge ,but in our society the knowledge of a life time may become out of date. The young and the old seem to live in two very different worlds, separated by different skills and abilities. No doubt ,the generation gap will continue in American life for some time to come.1.The first paragraph tells us that()A)the problem of the generation gap draws much attention from people B)it is out of date to talk about the generation gap
本卷共10页 第 1 页(另附答题纸2张)C)children and parents are trying to understand each other D)it is very important for people to frequently communicate with each other 2.In a more traditional society, old people()A)have their children respect and listen to them B)do not care of their children at all C)expect their children to rebel against them D)do not live together with their children 3.In American society young people()A)do not neet to find jobs B)marry people younger than them C)have better education than their parents D)leave home at an early age 4.Which of the following is NOT the cause of the generation gap? A)Young people like to depend more on themselves B)Parents do not love their children dearly C)American society changes rapidly D)Parents expect too much of their children 5.The main idea of the passage is()A)that the generation gap needs considering
B)when the generation gap is necessary in American society C)why the generation gap exists
D)how we can reduce the generation gap Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage: Telephone, television, radio, and the internet help people communicate with each other.Because of these devices, ideas and news of events spread quickly all over the world. For example ,within seconds, people can know the results of an election(选举)in another country. An international football match comes into the homes of everyone with a television set.News of disaster(灾难),such as a flood, can bring help from distant countries.Within hours ,help is on the way. This is because modern technology information travels fast. How has this speed of communication changed the world? To many people, the world has become smaller.Of course ,this does not mean that the world is actually physically smaller. It means that the world seems smaller. Two hundren years ago, communication between the continents took a long time. All news was carried on ships that took weeks or even monthsto cross the oceans. In the 17th and 18th centuries,it took six weeks for news from Europe to reach the Americas. This time difference influenced people’s actions. For example,a few battles in the war of 1812 between England and the United State could have been avoided.A peace agreement had already been signed.Peace was made in
本卷共10页 第 2 页(另附答题纸2张)England ,but the news of peace took six weeks to reach America.During these six weeks, the large and serious Battle of New Orleans(新奥尔良)was fought. Many people lost their lives after a peace treaty had been signed. They would not have died of news had come in time ,In the past ,communication took much more time than it does now. There was a good reason why the world seemed so much larger than it does today.6.News spreads fast because of()A)modern transportation B)new technology C)the changes of the world D)a peace agreement 7.Acoording to this passage,()is very important to people in a disaster area.A)fast communication B)modern technology C)the news D)new ideas 8.Which of the following statements is true based on the text? (Unit 1, Unit 6)
Air Pollution
Air supplies us with oxygen which is essential for our bodies to live.①Air is 99.9% nitrogen, oxygen, water vapor and inert gases.②Human activities can release substances into the air, some of which can cause problems for humans, plants, and animals.③
There are several main types of pollution and well-known effects of pollution which are commonly discussed. These include smog, acid rain, the greenhouse effect, and “holes” in the ozone layer.④Each of these problems has serious effects on our health and well-being as well as on the whole environment. One type of air pollution is the release of particles into the air from burning fuel for energy.Diesel smoke is a good example of this particular matter. This type of pollution is sometimes referred to as “black carbon” pollution.⑤The exhaust from burning fuels in automobiles, homes, and industries is a major source of pollution in the air.⑥Some authorities believe that even the burning of wood and charcoal in fireplaces and barbeques can release significant quantities of soot into the air.Another type of pollution is the release of harmful gases, such as sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and chemical vapors. These can take part in further chemical reactions once they are in the atmosphere, forming smog and acid rain.⑦
Smog is a type of large-scale outdoor pollution. It is caused by chemical reactions between pollutants derived from different sources, primarily automobile exhaust and industrial emissions.Cities are often centers of these types of activities, and many suffer from the effects of smog, especially during the warm months of the year.Another consequence of outdoor air pollution is acid rain. When a pollutant, such as sulfuric acid combines with drops of water in the air, the water or snow can become acidified. The effects of acid rain on the environment can be very serious. It damages plants by destroying their leaves, it poisons the soil, and it changes the chemistry of lakes and streams.Damage due to acid rain kills trees and harms animals, fish, and other wildlife. The greenhouse effect, also referred to as global warming, is generally believed to come from the buildup of carbon dioxide gas in the atmosphere.Carbon dioxide is produced when fuels are burned.Plants convert carbon dioxide back to oxygen, but the release of carbon dioxide from human activities is higher than the world's plants can process. The situation is made worse since many of the earth's forests are being removed, and plant life is being damaged by acid rain. Thus, the amount of carbon dioxide in the air is continuing to increase.Pollution also needs to be considered inside our homes, offices, and schools.⑧Some of these pollutants can be created by indoor activities such as smoking and cooking. In many countries in the world, steps are being taken to stop the damage to our environment from air pollution.Scientific groups study the damaging effects on plant, animal and human life.Legislative bodies write laws to control emissions.Educators in schools and universities teach students about the effects of air pollution. The first step to solve air pollution is assessment.Researchers have investigated outdoor air pollution and have developed standards for measuring the type and amount of some serious air pollutants.Scientists must then determine how much exposure to pollutants is harmful.Once exposure levels have been set, steps can be taken to reduce exposure to air pollution. These can be accomplished by regulation of man-made pollution through legislation. Many countries have set controls on pollution emissions for transportation vehicles and industry.Prevention is another key to controlling air pollution. The regulatory agencies mentioned above play an essential role in reducing and preventing air pollution in the environment. In addition, it is possible to prevent many types of air pollution that are not regulated through personal, careful attention to our interactions with the environment.Only through the efforts of scientists, business leaders, legislators, and individuals can we reduce the amount of air pollution on the planet.⑨This challenge must be met by all of us in order to assure that a healthy environment will exist for ourselves and our children.⑩
The Girl with a Rose
John Blanchard stood up from the bench, straightened his Army uniform, and studied the crowd of people making their way through Grand Central Station.①He looked for the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn't, the girl with the rose. His interest in her had begun thirteen months before in a Florida library.Taking a book off the shelf he found himself intrigued, not with the words of the book, but with the notes penciled in the margin.②
The soft handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and insightful mind.In the front of the book, he discovered the previous owner's name, Miss Hollis Maynell. With time and effort he located her address. She lived in New York City.He wrote her a letter introducing himself and inviting her to correspond. The next day he was shipped overseas for service in World War II.During the next year and one month the two grew to know each other through the mail. Each letter was a seed falling on a fertile heart.A romance was budding, Blanchard requested a photograph, but she refused. She felt that if he really cared, it wouldn't matter what she looked like. When the day finally came for him to return from Europe, they scheduled their first meeting — 7:00 PM at the Grand Central Station in New York.“You'll recognize me,” she wrote, “by the red rose I'll be wearing on my lapel.”So at 7:00 he was in the station looking for a girl whose heart he loved, but whose face he's never seen.I'll let Mr.Blanchard tell you what happened.A young woman was coming toward me, her figure long and slim.③Her blonde hair lay back in curls from her delicate ears;her eyes were blue as flowers. Her lips and chin had a gentle firmness, and in her pale green suit she was like springtime coming alive.I
started toward her, entirely forgetting to notice that she was not wearing a rose.④As I moved, a small, provocative smile curved her lips.'Going my way, sailor?' she murmured.Almost uncontrollably, I made one step closer to her, and then I saw Hollis Maynell. She was standing almost directly behind the girl.A woman well past 40, she had graying hair tucked under a worn hat.She was more than plump, her thick-ankled feet thrust into low-heeled shoes.⑤The girl in the green suit was walking quickly away.I felt as though I was split in two, so keen was my desire to follow her, and yet so deep was my longing for the woman whose spirit had truly accompanied me and upheld my own.⑥
And there she stood. Her pale, plump face was gentle and sensible, and her gray eyes had a warm and kindly twinkle.I did not hesitate. My fingers gripped the small worn blue leather copy of the book that was to identify me to her. This would not be love, but it would be something precious, something perhaps even better than love, a friendship for which I had been and must ever be grateful.⑦I squared my shoulders and saluted and held out the book to the woman, even though while I spoke I felt choked by the bitterness of my disappointment.⑧
I'm Lieutenant John Blanchard, and you must be Miss Maynell.I am so glad you could meet me;may I take you to dinner? The woman's face broadened into a tolerant smile.'I don't know what this is about, son,' she answered, 'but the young lady in the green suit who just went by, she begged me to wear this rose in my coat. And she said if you were to ask me out to dinner, I should tell you that she is waiting for you in the big restaurant across the street. She said it was some kind of test!'
It's not difficult to understand and admit Miss Maynell's wisdom. The true nature of a heart is seen in its response to the unattractive.
