反思中的西方学者看中国传统文化

汤一介

近二三十年来，特别是进入21世纪以来，西方一些著名的学者把目光转向了东方，转向了中国。

反思西方，转向东方。1988年，几十位诺贝尔奖得主在法国巴黎聚会，诺贝尔物理学奖获得者汉内斯〃阿尔文博士在闭幕会上说：人类要生存下去，就必须回到25个世纪以前，去吸取孔子的智慧。这就是说，西方学者在对自身文化进行反思并转向东方，开始重视中国传统文化。例如，当代美国的汉学家安乐哲与并不懂中文的哲学家郝大维合作，一连写了《通过孔子而思》、《预期中国：通过中国和西方文化的叙述而思》、《从汉而思：中国与西方文化中的自我、真理与超越》三本书。他们指出：西方哲学正在经历一场翻天覆地的变化，哲学家们和各种哲学运动从各方面向我们熟悉的关于理论和方法的客观性的观点提出挑战。这种大趋势迫使我们放弃那些关于确定性的不加分析的假定，实际上在西方思想界掀起了一场真正的革命。

学习东方智慧。奥地利著名心理学家卡尔〃容格在他的《东洋冥想的心理学》中指出：应该转换西方人已经偏执化了的心灵，学习整体性领悟世界的东方智慧，应该让他们放弃一些令人毛骨悚然的技术，拆穿他们拥有力量的幻象。这已导致千百万人付出生命。这就是说，西方的学者开始了自身文化反思，要求从东方或中国文化的角度来看西方文化。当代法国著名学者法朗索瓦〃于连特别重视中国哲学，他说：‚我在很长的时间里，都认为中国文化由于具有自我反思的特点，所以与人类学是对立的，却能够让我们进入哲学。‛只有从‚远景思维的空间‛出发，从‚他者的外在的观点‛出发，才会构成对自己的新的认识。这就是说，西方的某些学者已经认识到在对自身文化的认知过程中，应该有一个‚他者‛如中国传统文化作为参考系。

通过东西方文化的对话得出新的结论而有所发展。例如，安乐哲与郝大维认为他们所强调的儒家民主主义就是杜威和孔子对话的产物：孔子和杜威都强调‚人是具体环境下的人‛，而不接受完全无约束的自由主义的个人概念。杜威认为，仅仅追求‚绝对独立自由的自我‛并没有给美国带来什么好处，事实上已经阻碍着美国社会的进步。斯蒂芬〃显克曼的《赛琳和圣贤：古代希腊与中国的知识与智慧》和《古代中国与希腊：通过比较而思》、让〃弗郎索瓦〃勒维尔的《和尚与哲学家：佛教与西方思想的对话》、舒马赫的《小的是美好的》等，也表达了类似的思想。

探讨‚天人合一‛思想的现代意义。我们知道，西方哲学长期存在着‚天人二分‛的传统，如罗素在《西方哲学史》中就说：笛卡尔的哲学完成了或者说接近完成了由柏拉图开端而主要因为宗教上的理由经过基督教发展起来的精神、物质二元论。笛卡尔体系提出来精神和物质两者平行而且彼此独立，研究其中之一能够不牵涉另外一个。然而，中国哲学的‚天人合一‛思想认为，研究‚天‛（天道）不能不牵涉‚人‛（人道）；研究‚人‛也不能不牵涉‚天‛。因此，当代西方‚过程哲学‛对二元思维方式的批判，在某种意义上是受到中国‚天人合一‛思维方式的影响。他们认为，应把环境、资源、人类视为自然构成中密切相联的生命共同体，这将对解决当前的生态环境危机具有重要意义。

中国传统文化特别是中国传统哲学已经为许多西方学者所重视，因此我们应更好地对自身文化进行系统的、全方位的研究，而且应很好地了解西方学者对中国传统文化的种种看法，包括他们对中国传统文化的批评，使中国传统文化能对人类社会作出更大的贡献。
