Thank you.Thank you so much.Thank you.And does it get any better than this, a graduation ceremony for one of the great universities in the world in the home of New York Yankees? Nothing could be better. And thanks to all of you for cheering a visitor.I didn’t realize that was permitted in Yankee Stadium.
I am honored to receive this degree. And on behalf of the other honorees, I say thank you.Thank you for giving us this singular privilege of being part of this commencement ceremony. As I look out at this huge crowd of graduates, family, and friends, I can only reflect on what an extraordinary moment in history you are receiving your degrees, a moment in time of our country and the world where your talents and your energy, your passion and commitment is more needed than ever. There is no doubt that you are well prepared for a world that seems somewhat uncertain but which will welcome the education that you have received on behalf of not only of yourselves and your families, but your communities and your country.
As Secretary of State, I am well aware of the challenges that we face. You, as new graduates, and your generation will be up against those challenges: climate change and hunger, extreme poverty and extreme ideologies, new diseases and nuclear proliferation. But I am absolutely convinced that you and we are up to the task. There is no problem we face here in America or around the world that will not yield to human effort, to cooperation, to positive interdependence that makes clear humanity is going on, our challenges are ones that summon the best of us, and we will make the world better tomorrow than it is today.
Now, I know that it is fashionable in commencement speeches to be idealistic, and that may sound so, but at the root of my conviction is a strong sense of reality.Because you see, I don’t think we have a choice. We can sit on the sidelines, we can wring our hands, we can retreat into cynicism, and we know what the results will be: We will cede the field to those whose ideologies are absolutely anathema to people of conscience and faith all over the world. So our positive interdependence, which is a fact, will prepare us to meet these challenges. But they can no longer be seen just as government-to-government.There is a time and an opportunity, and with the new technologies available, for us to be citizen diplomats, citizen activists, to solve problems one by one that will give in to hard work, patience, and persistence, and will then aggregate to the solutions we seek.
Food Caching
Humans may be one of the smartest animals on the planet, butwhen it comes to remembering where things are, Clark’snutcrackers have us beat.A relative of jays松鸟 and crows乌鸦, nutcrackers hide pine seeds inthe ground each autumn so they have a source of food during the Colorado Rocky Mountainwinter. They cache as many as 30,000 seeds in 5,000 different locations over a fifteen square milearea.Since they cannot smell the seeds buried in the soil very well, they must use their remarkablespatial memory to find them.Nutcrackers are not the only animals that cache 躲藏food.Caching behavior is seen in birds, mammals and even insects.Chickadees store collections of seeds, insects and spiders in the barkof trees or under leaves.Red squirrels cut conifer cones from trees and bury them in plant litteron the forest floor.Harvester ants bring seeds back to their nests and store them in chambers, while honey bees save nectar花蜜 and pollen花粉 in their hive.
Because nutcrackers are one of the best at remembering cache locations, researchers arestudying them to find out why they have such great memories.Scientists know that thenutcracker’s abilities evolved because of environmental pressure.Nutcrackers with poor memoriesdid not likely survive the harsh mountain winters. Now researchers want to find out how the brainsof nutcrackers are different from other brains. They are particularly interested in the hippocampus,a small area of the brain that helps form memories.Finding out how the nutcracker’s brain isdifferent from other species may give us clues to why humans have memory problems. It mayeven lead to a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.
before i die i want to...there are a lot of ways the people around us can help improve our lives.we dont bump into every neighbor, so a lot of wisdom never gets passed on, though we do share the same public spaces.
我们现在的需求和梦想? now, i live in new orleans, and i am in love with new orleans.my soul is always soothed by the giant live oak trees, shading lovers, drunks and dreamers for hundreds of years, and i trust a city that always makes way for music.(laughter)i feel like every time someone sneezes, new orleans has a parade.(laughter)the city has some of the most beautiful architecture in the world, but it also has one of the highest amounts of abandoned properties in america.我现时住在新奥尔良 并深深地爱上了这座城市 那些生生不息的巨型橡树总是可以抚慰我的灵魂 几百年来,情侣、醉汉和追梦人们 总会稍息在树影下 我深信这一座充满着音乐律动的城市 每当有人打喷嚏时,我都感觉新奥尔良来了一只游行队伍(笑声)新奥尔良拥有世界上很多最漂亮的建筑 但同时,她也是全美拥有最多 废弃建筑的城市 i live near this house, and i thought about how i could make it a nicer space for my neighborhood, and i also thought about something that changed my life forever.我住在这栋房子附近,我就想如何让它 在这片社区里成为一个更好的地方 也思考了另一件事 这件事彻底改变了我的人生 in 2009, i lost someone i loved very much.her name was joan, and she was a mother to me, and her death was sudden and unexpected.and i thought about death a lot, and this made me feel deep gratitude for the time ive had, and brought clarity to the things that are meaningful to my life now.but i struggle to maintain this perspective in my daily life.i feel like its easy to get caught up in the day-to-day, and forget what really matters to you.2009年,我失去了一个我挚爱的人 她的名字叫琼,对我来讲,她就像我的母亲一样 她死得很突然,没有人预料到 然后我思考了很多关于死亡的事 然后这件事让我对我拥有的时光怀着深切致意 并且 显现出了那些 对我的生命有真正意义的东西 但我却很难在日常生活中保持这种心态 我觉得人们太容易被日复一日的琐碎困住 而忘记什么才是真正重要的事 so with help from old and new friends, i turned the side of this abandoned house into a giant chalkboard and stenciled it with a fill-in-the-blank sentence: before i die, i want to...so anyone walking by can pick up a piece of chalk, reflect on their lives, and share their personal aspirations in public space. 所以每一个路过的人都可以捡起一根粉笔 在公共场合里留下一些他们人生的痕迹 且来分享他们内心深处的愿望 i didnt know what to expect from this experiment, but by the next day, the wall was entirely filled out, and it kept growing.and id like to share a few things that people wrote on this wall.
“在死之前,我想为我的海盗行为接受审判”(笑声)“在死之前,我想跨过国际日期变更线” “在死之前,我想在上百万的观众面前唱歌” “在死之前,我想种一棵树” “在死之前,我想过隐居的生活” “在死之前,我想再抱她一次” “在死之前,我想成为某个人的骑士” “在死之前,我想要做完全真实的自己” so this neglected space became a constructive one, and peoples hopes and dreams made me laugh out loud, tear up, and they consoled me during my own tough times.its about knowing youre not alone.its about understanding our neighbors in new and enlightening ways.its about making space for reflection and contemplation, and remembering what really matters most to us as we grow and change.这个本来被遗忘的建筑变成了一个极具建设性的地方 这些人的希望和梦想 让我放声大笑,也黯然落泪 也曾在我经历困境的时候给我安慰 这让我们相信自己并不孤单 让我们对邻居有了全新的 启发心智的了解 这为我们营造了一个反省和思考的空间 也提醒我们在不断成长改变的过程中 什么才是最为重要的这个黑板是我去年做的,然后我就不断收到 一些热情的人们给我发的信息 说想在他们的社区里也设立一面这样的墙壁 所以我和我的同事们就做了一个小型工具箱 现在,这面墙壁已经遍布全球 包括哈萨克斯坦,南非 澳大利亚 阿根廷等地 这些迹象表明,如果我们能有一个 表达自己的意愿并与他人分享的机会 那么公共空间将发挥巨大的作用 two of the most valuable things we have are time and our relationships with other people.in our age of increasing distractions, its more important than ever to find ways to maintain perspective and remember that life is brief and tender.death is something that were often discouraged to talk about or even think about, but ive realized that preparing for death is one of the most empowering things you can do.thinking about death clarifies your life.
正如杰弗里穆尔所说的“跨越鸿沟”,因为早期的大多数不会尝试新事物,除非有些人已经先尝试过了,而这些人,创新者和早期的少数人,他们喜欢大胆的尝试,他 ted 演讲集 下定的目標可別告訴別人 everyone please think of your biggest personal goal.okay? for real, you can take a second;you got to feel this to learn it.take a few seconds and think of your personal biggest goal.okay? the repeated psychology tests have proven that telling someone your goal makes them less likely to happen.anytime you have a goal, there’s some steps that need to be done, some work that needs to be done in order to achieve it.ideally you will not be satisfied until you’ve actually done the work.but when you tell someone your goal, and they acknowledge it, psychologists have found that it’s called “social reality” that the mind is kind of tricked in the feeling that it’s already done.and then because you felt that satisfaction, you are less motivated to do the actual hard work necessary.so this goes against the conventional wisdom that we should tell our friends our goals, right? so they hold it to it„hold us to it„yeah.so hmm„let’s look at the proof.1926, kurt lewin founder of social psychology called this substitution;1933, wera mahler found when it was acknowledged by others it felt real in the mind;1982, peter gollwitzer wrote a whole book about this;and in 2009, he did some„hmm„new tests that were published.goes like this: well, you could resist the temptation to announce your goal;you can delay the gratification that these social acknowledgement brings;and you can understand that your mind mistakes the talking for the doing.but if you do need to talk about something, you could say that in a way that gives you no satisfaction, such as “i really want to run this marathon, so i need to train 5 times a week and kick my ass if i don’t, okay?” so audience, next time you’re tempted to tell someone your goal, what will you say? exactly!well done!
Bring on the learning revolution!
education, in a way, dislocates very many people from their natural talents. And human resources are like natural resources;they're often buried deep. You have to go looking for them. They're not just lying around on the surface. You have to create the circumstances where they show themselves.Every education system in the world is being reformed at the moment. And it's not enough.Reform is no use anymore, because that's simply improving a broken model. What we need--and the word's been used many times during the course of the past few days--is not evolution, but a revolution in education. This has to be transformed into something else. One of the real challenges is to innovate fundamentally in education.Innovation is hard because it means doing something that people don't find very easy for the most part.It means challenging what we take for granted, things that we think are obvious. The great problem for reform or transformation is the tyranny of common sense--things that people think, “Well, it can't be done any other way because that's the way it's done.”“The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion.” “As our case is new, so we must think anew and act anew.We must disenthrall ourselves and then we shall save our country.”
That there are ideas that all of us are enthralled to, which we simply take for granted as the natural order of things, the way things are.And many of our ideas have been formed, not to meet the circumstances of this century, but to cope with the circumstances of previous centuries. But our minds are still hypnotized by them. And we have to disenthrall ourselves of some of them.Everybody who's spoken at TED has told us implicitly, or sometimes explicitly, a different story, that life is not linear, it's organic. We create our lives symbiotically as we explore our talents in relation to the
circumstances they help to create for us.human communities depend upon a diversity of talent, not a singular conception of ability. And at the heart of the challenge is to reconstitute our sense of ability and of intelligence. This linearity thing is a
problem. The other big issue is conformity. We have built our education systems on the model of fast food. And we have sold ourselves into a fast food model of education. And it's impoverishing our spirit and our energies as much as fast food is depleting our physical bodies.I think we have to recognize a couple of things here. One is that human talent is tremendously diverse.People have very different aptitudes. But it's not only about that. It's about passion.Often, people are good at things they don't really care for. It's about passion, and what excites our spirit and our energy. And if you're doing the thing that you love to do, that you're good at, time takes a different course entirely. You know this, if you're doing something you love, an hour feels like five minutes. If you're doing something that doesn't resonate with your spirit, five minutes feels like an hour. And the reason so many people are opting out of education is because it doesn't feed their spirit, it doesn't feed their energy or their passion. So I think we have to change metaphors. We have to go from what is essentially an industrial model of education, a manufacturing model, which is based on linearity and conformity and batching people. We have to move to a model that is based more on principles of
agriculture. We have to recognize that human flourishing is not a mechanical process, it's an organic process. And you cannot predict the outcome of human development;all you can do, like a farmer, is create the
conditions under which they will begin to flourish. So when we look at reforming education and transforming it, it isn't like cloning a system. There are great ones like KIPPs, it's a great system. There are many great models. It's about customizing to your circumstances, and personalizing education to the people you're actually teaching. And doing that, I think is the answer to the future because it's not about scaling a new solution;it's about creating a movement in education in which people develop their own solutions, but with external support based on a personalized curriculum.

Our common destiny
― We are made wise not by the recollections of the past but by our responsibility for the future‖----George Bernard Shaw
China is faced with some enormous challenges as it enters the 21st century. In order to ensure the prosperity of our nation and its future generations we must confront and ultimately solve these challenges. Some of the more pressing issues facing China are universal. These include environmental degradation, over population and the effects of globalization. To overcome some of the things we need to implement include: Enhancing our scientific and industrial technologies in such areas as IT, Bio-tech, AI and Cybernetics.Further develop public infrastructure in under developed regions.Promote education reform at all levels.Introduce sustainable development initiatives. The implementation of free trade agreement between China and ASEAN.The benefit to China in introducing these initiatives will be significant and far-reaching.It is important to realize that these initiatives need to filter down through all elements of the society in China. For instance, cutting edge technologies and intellectual properties;the development of e-commerce based economy;an education system that encourages innovation and creativity;increased foreign investment;higher living standards;more efficient use of natural resources. It is important for us to realize these reforms are both essential and necessary. These will help China to fulfill its vast and unrealized potential on the world stage. It will also contribute more to a globalized world of the new century. As for the future our task is not to foresee but to enable.

What College Education Means to Me
The title of my speech is ―What college education means to me‖.Now reflecting on the past two and half years of my college experience, I come to realize how much it has shaped me.For me, college education is a marvelous ship-builder who designed me from kneel plates up.With great vision, college education has equipped me, first with a powerful propeller----the sophisticated knowledge in certain field and wide exposure to other disciplines.By dedicating myself to the engineering courses in the day and immersing myself in the rich banquet of the world literature at night, I’ve amassed the driving force for the future and enriched my soul.Besides, college education has also provided me with a precise compass----the sense of social responsibility. How can I best serve the interest of the public while achieving my self-fulfillment? My one year’s experience as a part-time English teacher has testified: to be valuable to society as well as to find my place, I have to possess some actual strength and the ability to function well in the most challenging situation.Amid the hectic schedule that balances club activities, sports, and academic courses, I feel the rhythm and beauty in the intensity of my high-pitched life, knowing that I ’m on the right way.And more importantly, college education has set up not only single ships, but also fleets with common destinations.By interacting with friends of common beliefs, I’ve acquired skills of relating to other people. Now ,as a ship about to make my maiden voyage ,I’m still not in the position to tell what’s waiting ahead of me ,but with a powerful propeller, a precise compass and ardent companions of sailing in the sea of society, I’m ready to be a great sea-explorer.Thank you.

The Importance of Keeping Optimistic
Honourable judges, ladies and gentlemen,Good afternoon!Today I would like to talk about the importance of keeping optimistic. When we encounter difficulties in life, we notice that some of us choose to bury their heads in the sand.Unfortunately, however, this attitude will do you no good, because if you will have no courage even to face them, how can you conquer them? Thus, be optimistic, ladies and gentlemen, as it can give you confidence and help you see yourself through the hard times, just as Winston Churchill once said, ―An optimist sees an opportunity in every calamity;a pessimist sees a calamity in every opportunity.‖ Ladies and Gentlemen, keeping optimistic, you will be able to realize, in spite of some hardship, there’s always hope waiting for you, which will lead you to the ultimate success.Historically as well as currently, there are too many optimists of this kind to enumerate. You see, Thomas Edison is optimistic;if not, the light of hope in his heart could not illuminate the whole world.Alfred Nobel is optimistic;if not, the explosives and the prestigious Nobel Prize would not have come into being. And Lance Armstrong is also optimistic;if not, the devil of cancer would have devoured his life and the world would not see a 5-time winner of the Tour De France.A rose may be beautiful, or maybe not;that depends on your attitude only, and so does success, so does life.Hindrances and difficulties do exist, but if you are optimistic, then they are only episodes on your long way to the throne of success;they are more bridges than obstacles! Now I prefer to end my speech with the great British poet Shelley’s lines: ―If winter comes, can spring be far behind?‖ Thank you!

Never Give Up
―If I could reach higher, just for one moment to touch the sky…‖---this is from my favorite song Reach. When we are appreciating the passionate melody of Gloria Estefan, we could hardly imagine that she could return to the stage after her paralysis. In the year 1990, this Cuban singer was knocked down in atraffic accident, and the doctor declared that she might never walk again. But Gloria did not give up and kept up constant exercising.Just one year after the disaster, she stood up again and presented this encouraging song at the Atlanta Olympics.Whenever I think of Gloria, I can’t help recalling my memory seven years ago, when I first entered university.Naturally shy, ordinary looking, average scores in study, just like an ugly duckling, I seemed to be the least outstanding one in my class. And the successive failures in the beginning led me into despair.―Am I destined to take the back seat to others?‖ Unwilling to submit to the fate, I paid more efforts on my study as well as many other activities, film dubbing, recital, drama… cause I just want to catch every little opportunity to prove myself.Constant effort yields sure success. Thanks to the competition, I received some awards and most of all, I gained the courage and confidence to face any difficulties in my life journey.Life is just like farming, and what you can reap depends a lot on your sowing and dedication.Once you have a dream, don’’t be hesitant.Your next difficult step may be the one to the top.Keep going forward, even in the toughest time, and never give up.

No One Can Be Perfect
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.Today I want to tell you a story about one of my friends, a lovely and smart girl who is always ready to help others.Being our grade leader, she is good at both work and study. In many people’s opinion, she is excellent and perfect. But one day she told me she was gloomy and insecure.People around her considered her outstanding and flawless, thinking she could handle everything. But the more she thought about herself, the more disappointed she became. She found that she was far from perfection.Last week, she didn’t do well in her French quiz, and the day before yesterday, she was late for a conference. She felt depressed and frustrated, because she failed to be a perfect girl without any mistakes.I was surprised to hear that for I thought she had every reason to be confident. However, the expectation of perfection has become a burden to her.I told her no one could be perfect and I suggested she find her own position. In fact, people are so eager to be perfect that they demand too much of themselves. They want to be special and unique, and they want to have no defects or weaknesses. However, we can never avoid mistakes and errors. It’s impossible for us to be a superman or a superwoman. No matter how successful we are, there are always some flaws. If we hold that everything should be perfect, we would be overcritical. My friend now has changed her attitude. She accepts her shortcomings but still keeps a positive outlook. She is even more active and doesn’’t allow the mistakes to hinder her pursuit of excellence. And I think that’’s the way we should be!That’’s all.Thank you!

I believe in our future
Honorable Judges, fellow students:
Good afternoon!
Recently, ther is a heated debate in our society. The college students are the beneficiaries of a rare privilege, who receive exceptional education at extraordinary places. But will we be able to face the challenge and support ourselves against all odds? Will we be able to better the lives of others? Will we be able to accept the responsibility of building the future of our country?
The cynics say the college students are the pampered lost generation, which would cringe at the slightest discomfort. But the cynics are wrong. The college students I see are eagerly learning about how to live independently. We help each other clean the dormitory, go shopping and bargain together, and take part time jobs to supplement our pocket money. The cynics say we care for nothing other than grades;and we neglect the need for character cultivation. But again, the cynics are wrong. We care deeply for each other, we cherish freedom, we treasure justice, and we seek truth.Last week, thousands of my fellow students had their blood type tested in order to make a contribution for the children who suffer from blood cancer. As college students, we are adolescents at the critical turning point in our lives. We all face a fundamental choice: cynicism or faith, each will profoundly impact our future, or even the future of our country.I believe in all my fellow classmates.Though we are still inexperienced and even a little bit childish.I believe that we have the courage and faith to meet any challenge and take on our responsibilities. We are preparing to assume new responsibilities and tasks, and to use the education we have received to make our world a better place.I believe in our future.

Change
Leo Tolstoy once said, everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself. He is right. We always have great plans and dreams in our minds… too ready to achieve something grand that changes the world or benefits all of mankind. For example;we hate pollution and have made up our minds to find new energy sources that keep the environment clean.Yet we still litter on the ground. We complain about traffic jams, so we plan to build more highways to solve the problem, but it never occurs to us that our failure to follow traffic regulations is the leading cause of this situation. We are so concerned that the violence in the media has a bad impact on our children, we urge the government to set laws to protect them. But, do we, as adults, set a good example for our kids? We use nasty words and even spit on the ground in front of them, I dare to say, we harm more!
In my opinion, before we decide to change the world, we had better change ourselves first. As ordinary individuals, we do not have the power to change the world. But we can change our habit of littering, spitting, cussing, we can respect the environment around us, we must act as good models for our kids.If each of us does all of these little things, all of us, millions and millions of individuals together, together we will be strong …strong enough to change our world!
So please, the next time you do something, think how your actions influence not only you, but those around you too, especially our children …and perhaps more importantly…our planet!

My Views on Receiving Education
In my early years, I did not see the value of education. When I was going on thirteen, I started to run my own shop. From then on, I worked hard to become a successful businessman. One day I realized the importance of the English language in the business world and started taking night classes.I was able to communicate well with foreign customers after two years of English study. But I started to feel that, in the long run, having a limited knowledge of English was not enough to make my business successful.I knew that only a well-rounded education could guarantee my success in the future. When I was eighteen, I had to make a decision to continue doing business or go back to school. There was one obstacle keeping me from getting an advanced education.I had only completed elementary school up to that point.I then went back to senior high school after four months of tutoring in different subjects.Being at school for the first time after so many years was somewhat embarrassing because my classmates were at least two or three years younger than I.I concluded that my age did not matter. The important thing was getting into college.I took the College Entrance Exams.Although my math exam result was only one point below the required score.I never gave up hope. The following year, I took it again and received the highest score in my city.Achieving such an amazing result gave me encouragement and courage necessary to continue my education to the next step.I am now in my second year of college and know that it is never too late to learn. My passion for studying and improving myself will never come to a halt as long as I continue to live.―Live and Learn.‖ is the motto I have adopted.I believe with an education I will succeed. So, if you are wondering whether education is important, don’t hesitate a moment to step up and seize the opportunity.

Beggars Today
Beggars are one of the most familiar groups in every city. They accompany us from our childhood until now, and I’ve found both the beggars and I change in this journey.Years ago as a little girl, when I came across some old and disabled beggars on the road, I’d donate some pocket money to them, happily thinking I was helping. As I have grown older, I’ve found the number of beggars has grown larger and they are more diverse. They appear in every corner of the city, on the overbridge, on the street, near restaurants, and even at your door.In contrast with the old days, it seems like the situation with beggars today is more complicated, which has made me hesitate before deciding whether to help them or not. It’s hard for me to give them money considering some who appear beggars in day time but dress up and go to fancy restaurants at night;and some who are controlled by some illegal organization and the money they get all goes to the organization. If I help them, I’d be making the problem worse, I’d be doing harm to the society, indirectly. But it’s also hard not to give them money, considering there’re real beggars who really need help.If I don’t help them, who will? And where is my sympathy?
What hurts me the most is not how hard it is to distinguish the real help-seekers from the many false ones, but that some children are forced by adults, sometimes even their parents, to beg. They grow up despised by the world, out of mainstream society. When I see their eyes filled with desperation and impudence instead of purity and innocence, my heart sinks. We don’t know how they will face the world when they grow up, how this will shape their characters, and what they may do to the society, to perpetuate this cycle of violence.Months ago the Fu Jian government has promulgated a new policy to deal with 8 kinds of beggars. An internet survey shows that over 80% of voters reacted positively toward the policy. We know that one single policy cannot solve a problem as complex as this one, but we do look forward to some improvement.I wish all humanity can live like human.

Make Every Moment count
One night, I complained to my mom about the lack of time. Finally she said,"you are short of time just because you waste precious minutes on complaints and anxiety. The point is, no matter how full your schedule is, if you try really hard, you can always fit in some thing more."
It is the same with filling the jar.Even if you place a dozen fist-sized rocks and a bucket of gravel into the jar, there is still space for sand and water between the rocks and gravel. The lack of time is just the excuse for my negligence of every single minute.I believe that the great dividing line between success and failure can be expressed in six words,"I did not have enough time."The fact is I do have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein. The point is I have never touched upon the real meaning of life which lies in snatching, seizing and enjoying every minute of it.No idleness, no delay, no procrastination, no complaint! It is during my moments of complaining or hesitation that my destiny is shaped.Once I make full use of every moment, I believe that, my worries will be gradually cut down to nothing.Time is the most valuable of all our possessions, but the most perishable as well.As Henry David Thoreau said,"You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment."
Whenever I fell the lack of time in the future, I will tell myself "Carpe diem , seize the day, make every moment count."

Hold Fast To Your Dreams
I have a dream today.I have a dream that one day every vally shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.Wow, what a dream it has been for Martin Luther King. But the changing world seems telling me that people gradually get their dreams lost somehow in the process of growing up, and sometimes I personally find myself saying goodbye unconsciously to those distant childhood dreams. However, we need dreams. They nourish our spirit;they represent possibility even when we are dragged down by reality. They keep us going. Most successful people are dreamers as well as ordinary people who are not afraid to think big and dare to be great. When we were little kids, we all dreamed of doing something big and splashy, something significant. Now what we need to do is to maintain them, refresh them and turn them into reality. However, the toughest part is that we often have no ideas how to translate these dreams into actions.Well, just start with concrete objectives and stick to it.Don’t let the nameless fear confuse the eye and confound our strong belief of future.Through our talents, through our wits, through our endurance and through our creativity, we will make it.Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly.Hold fast to dreams, for when dreams go, life is a barren field frozen with snow.So my dear friends, think of your old and maybe dead dreams.Whatever it is, pick it up and make it alive from today.

I Am Tripping My Elephant Here
Once upon a time, a weenie ant was walking on his way.As he was walking, suddenly he felt the ground shaking terribly. He looked around with his paranoid eyes and saw an elephant walking right behind him.Quickly, the little ant covered himself with dirt, but one leg was unfortunately left out.A sparrow saw everything, so she flew down with the purpose of teasing the ant: ―Hey, chicken!Watch out your leg, it’s out!‖ The ant felt embarrassed at first but then calmly responded: ― Shi…I am going to trip that elephant.‖
Right now, I’m standing on this glamorous stage. But everything here reminds me of is a not so fun memory.Around this time last year I was in Nanjing competing in another speech contest. That was the first time for me to be in such a large event.Of course the pressure I was under was immense too. After a sleepless and stressful night, I went onto that stage without the feeling in my legs. That speech turned out to be horrible.I don’t remember how I get down from there, but I do remember afterwards I just wanted to find a hole to hide in just like the ant in the story.Back at my school, it took a long time for me to recover. Thanks to all the help I got from my special friends. My confidence was restored. After rounds of giving speeches and answering tough questions, I am here today. From all that I’’ve been through I’ve learned that a good future is based on a forgotten past, if I want my life to go on well
I have to let go of my past failure. So today, with out fear, I am tripping my elephant again.

Farewell, Indifference
Who was the most well-known figure in China last month? It’s Ma Jiajue—the college student who murdered 4 of his roommates. Many people attributed his crime to his poverty and deficient education. In my opinion, his crime also has much to do with his classmates’indifference.Indifference is a terrible disease in today’s colleges and the whole society. It’s not rare that two students who have studied together for 4 years have never spoken to each other. It’s not rare that a student who has been absent from class for several days is not noticed at all. It’s also not rare that a student who has severe psychological problems is not cared about at all. Some people may say ,‖What the students with psychological problems like Ma JiaJue need is not care but psychotherapy.‖ However, when people are ill, what they need most is not only medical treatment, but also care from people around them.Every smile and every caring word will bring sunshine to their life.I once heard one of my roommates who was an introverted girl sobbing at mid-night.Being afraid of disturbing her, I sent a text message to comfort her.The next day, she told me that she was crying for not being invited to one of her friend’s birthday party. She thought she was neglected by others. But my message was really comforting which told her someone still cared about her. What can we do to prevent the tragedy of Ma JiaJue from happening again? Some people may say ’’Let’s open more psychological courses in schools.’’ and other people may say ’’Let’s donate more money for the poor students.’’ But I’ll say ―My fellow student, let’’s give more love and care to our roommates, our classmates and every person around us!‖

The East and the West, Let’s enjoy the combination of the two cultures?
Kipling said:―East is east, and west is west, and never the twain shall meet!‖ But now, a century later, they have met. They have met in business. They have met in education. They have met in the arts. Some people will argue that these meetings will leave us with a choice between east and west, but I believe that the best future lies in the creative combination of both worlds. We can make western ideas, customs and technology our own, and adapt them to our own use.We can enjoy the best of both worlds, because our tradition is, above all, one of selecting the best and making it our own.I love Beijing and Hennan opera because it always reminds me of who I am.But I am also a fan of pop music, especially English songs. So I have combined eastern melody with western language. It is called western henna opera. When two cultures meet, there may be things in one culture, which do not fit into the tradition of the other. When this happens, we need to learn to understand and respect the customs of another culture. Then there are certain things some people may not like.To this, I will say, if you do not like it, please try to tolerate it.To learn to tolerate what you personally don’t like is a great virtue at a time when different cultures mix and merge. Before us, there are two rivers, eastern and western cultures. At present, they may run in different courses. But eventually, they will converge into the vast sea of human culture.Right now, I can see peoples of eastern and western cultures, standing side by side, singing the Olympic theme song: we are hand in hand, heart to heart, together we will shape a beautiful tomorrow!Thank you!

Change The Ingredients Of Your Life
This is a glass of water, tasteless, right? However if you add sugar, it will taste sweet, but if you add vinegar, it will become bitter. The same is true with our life____ the flavor is created by our choices. If kindness is added to a strange you will have a friend;but if hostility is added, you will have an enemy. If love is added to a pile of red bricks you will have a home, but if hatred is add to those bricks , you will have an concentration camp.So my dear friends, never complain that life is boring and the world is disappointing. If don’t like the taste of your life, change the ingredients.Three year ago, I weighed more than 100 hundred kilograms which caused significant embarrassment and frustration in my life.like always failing my P.E examinations, like always being laughed at by girls, like being terrified to speak in public. It was my grandmother’’s encouragement that revived from my passive attitude to become confident in myself. She said ― My dear, if you can’t change you figure, why not treat it as your own style. So I began tocautiously employ the new way of thinking.By choosing to change my outlook on life, I developed the confidence to make a difference and finally I found a totally new world. So my dear friend, if faith, hope, love, endurance are added to your life, you will find the confidence to conquer your limitation and embrace new challenges. And hopefully with my speech included, you will have a fantastic speech contest.

LIFE IS A CHOICE
In our daily lives, we have many choices to make, such as what to, eat for supper, what clothes to wear, or what to do on weekends. At certain times in our lives, we need to make even more critical choices, such as which school to attend, what job to take or who to choose as husband or wife.Yes, life is a matter of choice.Seemimgly, it means a choice of tangible things. But in essence, it means choosing a way of life.Life is to be lived, savored, and enjoyed, not to be wasted or complained about.Hardly can we forget the time when our society faced the grave threat from the life-and-death disease--SARS.Yet, even during those dreadful times, some afflicted people remained optimistic.Instead of wearing neutral white masks, some people turned to colourful ones, and thus display a happy mood. And some creative people dubbed SARS to mean “SMILE AND REMAIN SMILING.” I was deeply touched by their optimisim, nearly forgetting that we’re still in a battle.people who survive these kinds of circumstances,(at some point)decide in their minds to carry on in spite of the overwhelming odds.laid-off workers, typically regarded as the victims of economic advancement, are subject to desperation that being unmeployed has brought on them. But, encouragingly, we have witnessed some of them striving hard to rebuild confidence toward life and discover new opportunities for demonstrating their values.Although we cannot choose our appearance, inborn gifts and even avoid unexpected disasters and adversities, we do have the privilege to choose to live optimistcally,to love our lives, to have dreams, and to cherish hopes.Every morning when we get up, we have a choice of how we want to approach life that day.As for me, I choose to be cheerful.
The Future Is Now-------The Choice is yours
As two men were about to be sent into prison, the warden let each of them make a demand. The American loved smoking, so he wanted three boxes of cigars;while the Jew said all he needed was a telephone to contact with people outside of the prison. Two years later, the first out was the American who still had many cigars in his hands and pockets but was crying: ―Give me some matches!‖ Then the Jew walked out, he shook hands with the warden and said: ―Thank you for the phone, it made my business increase by 200%.‖
What do you think of this story? Life today is what you’ve decided years ago, and so is the future: your decisions today will affect your destiny years later. Now I have two things to choose from: to go abroad, to find myself a decent job after graduation or to further my study as a postgraduate.I haven’t worked out an answer to this question yet, but I know that whatever I do will directly affect my future. An Indian once said life is just like a game of cards, the cards in your hand represent opportunities, while the way you play decides the result you’ll get.Looking back in history, during World WarⅡ, Churchill who led the British people resolved to expect ―blood, toil, tears and sweat‖.They won the victory then.Today Shenzhou 5 took the first Chinese astronaut into space.I am sure that later there’ll be more spacecrafts, like Shenzhou 6,7 and 8 ……
So what does the future look like? No one can tell. But I know the choice is yours, the future is now.Make good use of everyday, a man can achieve greater successes, a country can gain prosperity and the whole world can be united, as it has never been before.

Knowledge collaboration and all-round education
Ladies and gentlemen,We engineering students take it for granted that technology is changing incredibly fast.We are thinking nervously and seriously whether our colleges are failing to provide a foundation in the skills currently needed in industry.Take my major telecommunications for example.Scientists say that 21st century is a biomedical time, not an electrical time. But without the help of electronic data processing and transformation, biomedical technology alone cannot go too far.Funny enough, the word biomedical itself is just a combination of two disciplines. So the interdisciplinary exploitation serves as the critical part for our electric and electronics world as well as any other fields to find new way of being. But the power of knowledge collaboration is certainly not restricted to science and engineering;it is in the full community of learning.Walking around campus I absorbed a reality that there is a seamless web between students from different professional backgrounds. The engineering students are discussing animatedly in a philosophy lecture, speaking passionately in the public speaking club, and looking for sparkling ideas from learning history and arts. How wonderful that is!That, ladies and gentleman, is just a significant step forward to be well-rounded because once we jump out of the circle we can see the bigger picture. My friends, I hope that you have already got what university is all about. Please let me end my speech with the Nobel Prize winner Li Zhengdao’s words: ―The realization of the perfect combination of science and engineering, science and arts, technology and humanity,is the greatest symbol of a university’s success.‖ Thank you.

Me and my Fears
Honorable judges, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen:
It is a great honor and pleasure to be here on this beautiful Saturday morning to share with you my sentiments about life and passion for the English language.About a year and a half ago, I took part in my very first English Speech Contest. When I stood before the microphone with all eyes starring directly at me, I could hardly speak.I stood there, embarrassed and helpless, struggling in vain for the right thing to say.My fears had paralyzed me.While my passion for English has never changed, I lost my courage to speak in public. When my professor again encouraged me to take part in this Competition, I said ―no.‖ I couldn’’t endure yet another painful experience. He looked me straight in the eye and said something that pierced my heart.I will never forget his words.―Look,‖ he said, ―We all have our fears, and you have yours. You could twist your ankle in a basketball game, but then be afraid to ever play again.Running away can never dispel your fears, but action will.A winner is not one who never fails, but one who never quits.‖
I spent a whole day with his words twisting and turning in my mind. Then I made the bravest and wisest decision of my life: I would face my fears – and take part in the competition!
As it turned out, my dear old professor was right. Now, here I am, once again standing before a microphone. My heart is beating fast, and my mouth is dry, but most importantly, I have faced my fears--and that makes all the difference!
Thank you.

I can handle it
I can never forget the summer in 1996.I went through an extremity of despair due to my failure in the National College Entrance Examination. It seemed that my dream of being a university student would never come true. One evening my father came and told me the story of Steven Callahan, who was crossing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and sank.It was a miracle that he survived and was found 76 days later(the longest anyone has survived a shipwreck on a life raft alone).Later in his narrative he wrote these sentences ―I tell myself I can handle it.Compared to what others have been through I’’m fortunate‖.Hearing these sentences I felt something important struck me.I believed my life would mot be that bad and it was proved to be true.Later during my study in the university I always told myself ―I can handle it‖ when my own goals seemed far off or when my problems seemed too overwhelming and every time I said it ,I always came back to my senses. Now I work as an English teacher in a middle school.Whenever my students complain about their difficulties in study or want to give up, I will tell the same story of Callahan to them.I just want to make them believe they can handle their difficulties because their circumstances are only bad compared to something better. But others have been through much worse. Then they will build up fortitude. So here, coming to us from the extreme edge of survival, are words that can give us strength.Whatever you’re going through, tell yourself you can handle it.Compared to what others have been through, you’re fortunate.Tell this to yourself over and over, and it will help you get through the rough spots with little more fortitude.

My Hometown—Inner Mongolia
Good morning ladies and gentlemen, today, I would like to introduce my beloved hometown—Inner Mongolia to all of you.It has been 57 years since the birth of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on May 1st, 1947.Dominated by the Mongolian nationality, the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region is located on the northern frontier of China. The Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region occupies an area of 1.18 million square kilometers and has a population of about 20 million people who represent a score of different nationalities.Every time when people talk about Inner Mongolia, they’ll come down to the vast grassland.Yes, the Inner Mongolian prairie area makes up a quarter of the total grassland area of the country. On the boundless expanse of the Inner Mongolian prairie are living numerous sheep, Cattle and horses, on which our Mongolian have lived for generations. That is why the grassland is eulogized as ―cradle of life‖.There are two vast grasslands in my hometown—Hulun Buir Grasslands and Xilin Gol Grasslands which are both world-famous regions.People in Inner Mongolia are famous for their bravery, enthusiasm and hospitality. No mater where you are from, as long as you come to a herdsman’s house, you will be warmly entertained with roasted whole lamb and milk tea, and what’s more, you can also appreciate beautiful Mongolian songs and elegant dances. It is not exaggerating to say Mongolians are born singers and dancers. The moment you set your feet on the grassland areas you will discover it is indeed a real land of songs and dances.Today’s Inner Mongolia still maintains her ethnic characteristics and at the dame time, she tries to keep pace with the development of the modern world.Ordus is a worldwide well-known brand, Yili and Mengniu are both the famous dairy industries, which have greatly improved the living standard of our Mongolian people. And I’m sure, our Mongolian people will make great effort to contribute to our hometown. As a college student, I know quite clearly that my mission is to master solid knowledge and one day do good to my beloved hometown.
Imagine, if you will, a gift.I’d like for you to picture in your mind. It’s not too big.About the size of a golf ball.So in vision what it looks like all wrapped up.But before I show you what’s inside, I will tell you that’s going to do incredible things for you.It will bring all of your family together. You will feel loved and appreciated like never before. And reconnect to friends and acquaintances you haven’t heard from in years.Adoration(崇拜,崇敬)and admiration(赞美)will overwhelm you.It will recalibrate what’s important in your life.It will redefine your sense of spirituality and faith. You’ll have a new understanding and trust in your body. You’ll have unsurpassed vitality(生命力,活力)and energy. You’ll expand your vocabulary, meet new people, and you’ll have a healthier lifestyle. And get this, you’ll have an eight-week vacation of doing absolutely nothing. You’ll eat countless gourmet(讲究吃的人,食物品尝家)meals.Flowers will arrive by the truck load.People will say to you:”you look great!have you had any work done?”and you’ll have a life-time supply of good drugs. You’ll be challenged, inspired, motivated and humbled.Your life will have new meaning: peace, health, serenity(平静,从容), happiness, nirvana(涅磐).The price? Fifty-five thousand dollars. And that’s an incredible deal.By now, I know you’re dying to know what it is and where you can get one.Dose Amazon carry it? Dose it have the apple logo on it? Is there a waiting list? Not likely. This gift came to me about five months ago.And looked more like this when it
was all wrapped up.Not quite so pretty. And this. And then this.It was a rare jam brain tumor.Hemangioblastoma.The gift that keeps on giving. And while I’m ok now.I wouldn’t wish this gift for you.I’m not sure you’d want it.But I would’t change my experience. It profoundly altered my life in ways it didn’t expect. In all the ways I just shared with you.So the next time you are faced with something that’s unexpected, unwanted and uncertain.Consider.that it just may be a gift.
