Introductory speech for Ilene Chaiken, recipient of the Davdison/Valentini Award
Jennifer: “Good evening.It’s truly wonderful to be back in San Francisco.I’m here tonight to present GLAAD’s Davidson/Valentini Award.Named after GLAAD’s first executive director, Craig Davidson, and his partner Michael Valentini, this prize is given annually to an openly lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting LGBT equality.Tonight we bestow this prestigious honor on my beloved boss, The L Word creator, executive producer and director Ilene Chaiken.Born and raised in the Philadelphia suburbs, Ilene moved to Los Angeles in the 1980s and was openly gay within the entertainment industry from the start.Working first as a trainee at the Creative Artists’ Agency, she subsequently took creative executive positions with two legends: Aaron Spelling and Quincy Jones.But ultimately writing proved to be Ilene’s true love.Her early credits include the acclaimed telepics Damaged Care and Dirty Pictures which won the 2000 Golden Globe Award for best television movie.Her feature film work includes Barb Wire, a cult favorite starring Pamela Anderson.Thankful for these early successes but frustrated that her own community was sorely mis-or unrepresented, Chaiken conceived an idea for a series that would revolve a tight knit group of lesbian friends living, working and loving in Los Angeles.Ilene persisted in the face of initial resistance and rejection and finally, in 2004, The L Word premiered.Headed for its sixth and final season next year, the show has grown into a massive worldwide hit, giving millions of gay and straight fans a glimpse into a lesbian world where love and loyalty rule.But more than that, The L Word reaffirmed that good storytelling has a way of creating community.Fans everywhere have been connecting with each other online, in public and at home-viewing parties.Named one of POWER UP’s top ten lesbians in Hollywood and one of OUT Magazine’s 100 most powerful gay people in Hollywood, Ilene is a former board member of GLAAD and founding CEO of OurChart.com, an online social network for lesbians and those who love them.Where the woman finds the time, I have no clue.Once upon a time, Ilene thought to herself, “It’s not good enough to have just one character who’s a lesbian in someone else’s story.To say that with her passion, commitment and talent, she’s become a pioneer in the portrayal of lesbians on television is an understatement.Through The L Word, Ilene has helped give representation to an international audience, and by doing so, has expanded our notion of community: Lesbians without borders, indeed.The L Word is better than good enough;it’s the one and only, a unique trailblazer.Please help me welcome this year’s recipient of the Davidson/Valentini Award: my friend, the amazing, revolutionary Ilene Chaiken.”

首先感谢曾校长给我发言的机会，同时也非常感谢现场的你们，2010级的全体学生。我非常高兴能参加2013年的毕业典礼，对我来说，它是我人生的一大荣誉。此前我一直在考虑我应该跟你们说些什么，作为这里2000届的毕业生，现在作为北京大学的校长，我要谈论的话题有很多可能性。
First of all, Thank you President Zeng for inviting me to speak, and thank you to the Class of 2010 for not protesting…seriously.I am extiaordinarily happy to have witnessed this graduation ceremony of 2013 today because it represents, for me, exactly the best honor of my life.As for a graduate of 2000 here and now a presidet of Peking
University, I was wondering what I should say to you-there are so many possibilities you know?
直到今天，我已毕业工作十余年，我知道你们都很想了解我毕业后的经历，因为二十几岁是你们人生中认识自己熟悉自我的时期。这不是个容易的过程，但是也不算艰难。在此时期你们可能会不确定未来应该要走的路，因为二十岁的时候你总会遇到很多个十字路口。
Until now, I have been work for more than a decade, you wanted to know about my experiences after graduating and I understand that
because the twenties are that time in your life when you’re finding out yourself and really getting acquainted with your own.It’s not supposed to be easy, but it doesn’t have to be torture.You’re supposed to have moments of uncertainty about which path to take because the 20’s are full of crossroads.同学们，你们很快就要离开这片曾经留下无数汗水与憧憬的校园，离别朝夕相处的老师和同学，即将开始新的征程，它既充满希望与挑战，更有无数的困难和诱惑。作为你们的大师姐，在临别之际，我提出几点希望与大家共勉：

Firstly, be determined to return to and serve for society, and diligent to enrich lives.“Work creates wealth and diligence changes lives.” Whatever life path is and whatever careers you choose, we need to stick to your dream, face up to the fact with healthy mind and confront lives with positive attitude.We have to brave enough to take on heavy
responsibilities, overcome difficulties and dare to show ourselves in the hardest places.Hope we can lower our prospect to get an object, deepen our foundation to obtain a space, and postpone our enjoyment to achieve a career.二要志存高远，努力成才。“天高任鸟飞，海阔凭鱼跃”。社会更是一所经久耐读的大学，需要大家认真学习，不断实践和努力探索。只要大家树立远大的志向，勤于实践，锐意进取，勇于创新，团结协作，就能抓住千载难逢的历史机遇，在工作中开创出自己的一片天地。
Secondly, set up a profound ideal and try to be a talent.“The bird can fly freely in the soaring sky and the fish can jump freely in the broad sea”.The society is an everlasting university, and we have to learn diligently, practice constantly and explore hard.Only if we set up profound ideals, diligent to practice, determine to move forward, dare to innovate and cooperate with others can we catch the invaluable historic opportunities and explore a space for ourselves in work.三要勇对竞争，迎接挑战。“物竞天泽、适者生存”。未来会有很多艰辛和不如意，只有充满勇气和信心，敢于面对挑战，勇往直前的人，才是生活的强者，才能是自己命运的主宰。
Thirdly, be brave to face the competition and welcome the challenge.“Survival of the fittest”。There are lots of hardships and unsatisfactory in the future.The one who is brave and confident, dare to confront challenges and move forward bravely is the superman of lives and can control his or her lives by himself or herself.同学们，无论你们走的多远、飞的多高，我相信和期待你们事业有成、生活幸福，人生精彩。衷心的祝愿同学们一路顺风、前程似锦。
