中国是一个发展中的社会主义大国，它的未来发展，不仅直接关系到中国人民的前途，而且对亚洲和世界的发展与进步也会产生重要影响。China is a large developing socialist country, and its future development will not only directly affect the future of the Chinese people, but will also have an important impact on the development and progress of Asia and the world.在过去的一百多年间，中国人民历经沧桑，在奋起斗争的过程中进行了伟大的历史变革。Over the past hundred-odd years, the Chinese people have gone through storm and stress, and in the course of vigorous struggle they have accomplished a great historic transformation.新中国50年的发展取得了令世人瞩目的巨大成就。New China's 50 years of development have resulted in accomplishments that have astonished the world.今晚我们所在的上海浦东陆家嘴地区，6年前还是一些简陋的住宅和农田，如今已是高楼林立、生机盎然的金融贸易区。Only six years ago, in this Lujiazui District of Shanghai's Pudong area, where we are gathered this evening,there were run-down houses.如今已是高楼林立、生机盎然的金融贸易区。Now it is a vibrant modern financial and business zone, full of high-rise buildings.50多年前，我到上海读大学，Over fifty years ago, I was in Shanghai attending university.对旧中国的贫困落后和国势衰败有着深刻感受。At that time, I had a deep sense of the poverty, backwardness and feebleness of old China.正是在那个时候，我立志献身于建立独立、自由、民主、统一和富强的新中国的伟业，并一直奋斗到今天。It was then that I decided to devote myself to the noble task of building an independent, free, democratic, unified, rich and powerful New China, and I have been struggling for that to this very day.年前，我任上海市长，经历了中国这座最大城市改革开放和现代化建设的进程。Fourteen years ago, I became mayor of Shanghai, and experienced the process of reform, opening-up and modernization in this China 's biggest city.相信，在座各位也目睹了上海日新月异的变化。I'm sure that all of you have seen with your own eyes the constant and unceasing transformation of Shanghai.上海的发展，从一个侧面反映了中国所发生的巨大变化。The growth of Shanghai is one reflection of the enormous changes taking place in China.在20世纪的前50年里，中国人民坚持不懈地继续着鸦片战争以来为改变自己悲惨命运而进行的努力，经过艰苦卓绝的斗争，终于在中国共产党的领导下结束了半殖民地半封建的历史，赢得了民族独立和人民解放，建立了中华人民共和国。In the first 50 years of the 20th century, the Chinese people made unflagging efforts to change the tragic fate that had been theirs ever since the Opium War.After arduous and valiant struggle, they finally ended their semi-colonial and semi-feudal history, won independence for the nation and freedom for the people, and founded the People's Republic of China under the leadership of the Communist Party of China.在20世纪的后50年里，中国人民自力更生，奋发图强，开展社会主义建设，In the latter half of the 20th century, relying on their own efforts, the Chinese people went all out to make their country strong and embarked on socialist construction.在旧中国一穷二白的基础上建立了比较完整的工业体系和国民经济体系，使自己的物质生活水平和精神文明程度得到了大幅度提高。On the poor and deprived foundation of old China, they built a relatively complete industrial structure and national economic framework, raising the levels of their cultural and material lives significantly.中国日益走向繁荣昌盛。China started marching forward steadily toward prosperity.现在，中国人民正满怀信心地沿着邓小平同志开创的建设有中国特色社会主义道路走向未来。Now, the Chinese people are confidently taking the road to the future, the road of socialism with Chinese characteristics pioneered by Comrade Deng Xiaoping.中国人民进行的这些历史性的创造，不仅彻底改变了近代中国的悲惨命运，而且也是中华民族对人类进步事业的重大贡献。These historic initiatives of the Chinese people have fundamentally transformed the tragic fate of modern China, and they are also great contributions made by the Chinese people to the cause of human progress.在即将跨入21世纪的时刻，展望未来50年的前景，我们充满信心。At this moment in time, when we are about to step into the 21st century and look ahead at the prospects for the next 50 years, we are filled with confidence.中国人民将继续坚定不移地走改革开放的道路。The Chinese people will firmly and unswervingly follow the path of reform and opening-up.我们的目标是，到下个世纪中叶基本实现现代化，把我国建成富强民主文明的社会主义现代化国家，实现中华民族的伟大复兴。Our goal is to realize modernization by the middle of the coming century, to make our country a wealthy, strong, democratic and civilized modern socialist country, and to achieve the great revival of the Chinese nation.这里，我愿同大家谈谈中国人民的一些基本价值观念。Here, I would like to speak to you about some basic values of the Chinese people.不了解这些，就难以把握中国正在和将要发生的事情。Without an understanding of these, it is difficult to make sense of present and future events in China.中华民族历来尊重人的尊严和价值。The Chinese people have always respected the dignity and worth of human beings.中国共产党领导人民进行革命、建设和改革，就是要实现全中国人民的自由、民主和人权。The Communist Party of China led the people in revolution, construction and reform for the very purpose of realizing freedom, democracy and human rights for all the people of China.今天中国所焕发出来的巨大活力，生动地反映出中国人民具有自由、民主地发挥创造力的广阔空间。The great vitality displayed nowadays in China vividly demonstrates the tremendous space that the Chinese people have to freely and democratically exercise their creativity.中国有12亿多人口，社会生产力仍不发达，必须首先保障人民的生存权和发展权，不然一切其他权利都无从谈起。China has a population of over 1.2 billion, but its social production is still not well developed, and we must first and foremost safeguard the people's rights to survival and development;otherwise we cannot even begin to talk about other rights.中国确保12亿多人的生存权和发展权，这是对世界人权进步事业的重大贡献。
The fact that China has assured the rights to survival and development of over 1.2 billion people is a major contribution to the cause of the progress of human rights all over the world.中国人民主张集体人权与个人人权、经济社会文化权利与公民政治权利紧密结合，The Chinese people advocate the close interlinking of collective human rights with individual human rights, of economic, social and cultural rights with citizens' political rights.这是适合中国国情的人权事业发展的必然道路。
This is the road we must take for the cause of promoting human rights in light of China's national conditions.中华民族历来坚持独立自主。
The Chinese people have always insisted on independence.中国人民珍惜自己经过长期奋斗而得来的独立自主权利，也坚决维护一切民族享有这种权利。They cherish the rights of independence that they have won over a long period of struggle, and they resolutely uphold that all the nationalities enjoy these rights.我们主张各国都有选择适合本国国情的社会制度和发展道路的权利，We also believe that every country has the right to choose the social system and path of development that suit its national conditions.不同社会制度的国家应该相互尊重主权和领土完整，平等相待，和平共处，Countries with different social systems should respect each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity;they should treat each other as equals and coexist peacefully.3 反对任何国家以任何形式把自己的社会制度和意识形态强加于别国的作法。We oppose any efforts by any country to impose its own social system and ideology on another country.中华民族历来爱好自由与和平。The Chinese people have always loved freedom and peace.中国人民在近代饱受战争和被侵略的痛苦，深感和平的珍贵。The Chinese people have suffered greatly from wars and invasions in modern times, and they feel deeply how precious peace is.中国进行现代化建设，需要和平的国际环境。As it engages in modernization, China needs a peaceful international environment.我们希望世界人民能够生活在没有战争、没有暴力的世界里。We hope that all people will be able to live in a world without war and without violence.中国实行以和平为宗旨的外交方针，坚决反对一切危及世界和平的行为。China adopts a foreign policy with peace as its goal, and resolutely opposes any acts that endanger world peace.中国的发展不会对任何人构成威胁，而只会促进世界的和平、稳定和发展。China's development does not pose a threat to anyone, instead, it will only help to advance world peace, stability and development.永远不称霸，这是中国人民对世界的庄严承诺。It is the Chinese people's solemn promise to the world never to seek hegemony.中华民族历来珍惜国家统一。The Chinese people have always prized national unity.维护祖国统一是全中国人民的坚定意志。To safeguard the unity of the motherland is the firm aspiration of the entire Chinese people.香港已经回归祖国，澳门将于今年12月20日回归。Hong Kong has already returned to the motherland;Macao will return on December 20 this year.台湾问题最终必将得到解决。It is certain that the Taiwan question will eventually be resolved.任何一个国家都不会允许自己的领土分裂出去，也不会允许外国势力制造或支持这种分裂。No country will allow its own territory to be split off, nor will it allow any foreign force to create or support such a split.我们解决台湾问题的方针是“和平统一、一国两制”。Our guideline for solving the Taiwan question is “peaceful reunification and one country, two systems”.在解决台湾问题上，我们不承诺放弃使用武力，正是为了促成和平解决。In resolving the Taiwan question, we will not undertake to renounce the use of force precisely for the purpose of bringing about a peaceful resolution of the Taiwan question.中国人民一定要也一定能够实现祖国的完全统一。The Chinese people have both the determination and ability to achieve the complete reunification of their motherland.台湾地区最近连续发生的强烈地震，牵动了全中国人民的心。The series of recent severe earthquakes that occurred in the region of Taiwan weigh heavily on the heart of everyone in China.借此机会，我再次向受到地震灾害袭击的台湾同胞表示深切的慰问。I would like to take this opportunity to again express profound condolences to our compatriots in Taiwan who have suffered from the earthquakes.世界是丰富多彩的。The world is a colorful and varied one.各国人民走自己选择的发展道路，实现自己追求的理想，The people of each country follow the path of development they have chosen for themselves and pursue their own Ladies and Gentlemen, China is an ancient civilization with a history dating back over 5,000 years.The Chinese people have made a major contribution to human progress by creating the splendid Chinese civilization with hard work and ingenuity.The city of Beijing, with its long history of over 3,000 years, stands testimony to that effort.It became the nation's capital over 800 years ago.A short distance from the Great Hall of the People, where we are in right now, is the world-renowned Forbidden City.First built some 600 years ago, the former Imperial Palace is the largest and most complete existing ensemble of ancient royal architecture in the world.From Beijing's time-honored past and the majestic Forbidden City itself, people can learn vividly the originality, greatness and profound richness of the Chinese civilization and feel for themselves the vigor, resilience and pioneering spirit of the Chinese nation.Beginning in the mid-19th century, China was reduced to dire misery as the country suffered one humiliating defeat after another and the people languished in poverty and starvation as a result of brutal foreign aggressions and corrupt and incompetent feudal rulers.Refusing to submit to a fate of agony and woe, the Chinese people fought back persistently and finally built up a New China under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party.Since 1949, when the New China was proclaimed, and particularly since the implementation of reform and opening-up program pioneered by Mr.Deng Xiaoping in 1978, China has undergone a profound transformation never seen in the country before.In a short span of 26 years from 1978 to 2004, China's GDP increased from 147.3 billion US dollars to 1.6494 trillion US dollars with an average annual growth rate of 9.4 percent.Its foreign trade rose from 20.6 billion US dollars to 1.1548 trillion US dollars, averaging an annual growth rate of over 16 percent.China's foreign exchange reserve increased from 167 million US dollars to 609.9 billion US dollars.The number of rural poor has dwindled from some 250 million to 26 million.The overall national strength of China has increased remarkably and the texture of life of its people improved steadily.While inheriting and carrying forward their proud past, the 1.3 billion Chinese people are writing a new chapter in history as they march of one mind on the road of building socialism with Chinese characteristics.中国已经明确了本世纪头２０年的奋斗目标，这就是紧紧抓住重要战略机遇期，全面建设惠及十几亿人口的更高水平的小康社会，到２０２０年实现国内生产总值比２０００年翻两番，达到４００００亿美元左右，人均国内生产总值达到３０００美元左右，使经济更加发展、民主更加健全、科教更加进步、文化更加繁荣、社会更加和谐、人民生活更加殷实。我们深知，中国在相当长时期内仍然是发展中国家，从中国有１３亿人口的国情出发，实现这个奋斗目标是很不容易的，需要我们继续进行长期的艰苦奋斗。

We in China have identified the goal for the first 20 years of this century.That is to firmly seize the important window of strategic opportunities to build a moderately prosperous society of a higher standard in an all-round way for the benefits of our over one billion people.By 2020, we will quadruple China's GDP of 2000 to approximately 4 trillion US dollars with a per capita level of some 3,000 US dollars, and further develop the economy, improve democracy, advance science and education, enrich culture, foster greater social harmony and upgrade the texture of life for the people.We are deeply aware that China, for a considerably long period of time to come, will remain a developing country.The population figure of 1.3 billion alone will make the fulfillment of the above goal a formidable challenge, and we must be prepared for a long and uphill journey ahead.To realize this goal, we must uphold the scientific approach in achieving economic and social development of the country.We must put the people first, making the fundamental interests of the broadest masses of people our point of departure and endeavoring to satisfy their growing material and cultural needs to pursue the comprehensive development of man.We must focus on economic development as our central task, making development our top priority and facilitating and all-round progress in economic, political and cultural aspects and in the building of a harmonious society.We must stick to the direction of reform for a socialist market economy, step up institutional innovation, deepen reforms aimed at galvanizing creative vitality of society and increase the inherent dynamics for economic and social development.We must adhere to our basic policy of opening to the outside world, building a more open market place and allowing the country to participate more broadly in international economic and technological cooperation and competition with still wider and higher dimensions.We must follow a new course of industrialization, endeavor to overhaul the economic structure, quickly transform the ways of economic growth by improving its quality and efficiency, vigorously develop the circular economy and build a resource-effective and environment-friendly society, thus blazing a trail of development characterized by higher productivity, comfortable life for the people and a sustainable eco-system.We believe, as long as we firmly follow the path of development that is consistent with China's national conditions, we will be able to realize our goal and play a greater and more constructive role in the promotion of world peace and common development.女士们、先生们！
中国的发展同亚洲及世界的发展紧密相关。中国的发展已经并将继续为亚洲及世界各国带来合作共赢的机遇。截至２００４年底，中国累计实际利用外商直接投资额达到５６２１亿美元，批准外商投资企业５０多万个，并形成了年进口５６００多亿美元的大市场。目前，绝大多数国家和地区都有企业来华投资，《财富》５００强企业中已有４００多家在华投资，外商投资在华设立的研发中心达７００多家。随着中国的不断发展，中国同世界各国和各类企业的合作必将进一步扩大。中国将继续稳步开放市场，创新引进外资的形式，完善有关鼓励和保护外商投资的法律法规，改革涉外经济管理体制，加强知识产权保护，努力为中国的对外经贸合作和外国来华投资提供一切便利，创造更好的环境。
Ladies and Gentlemen, China and the rest of Asia and the world at large are closely related when it comes to development.A developing China will, as always, generate cooperation opportunities with win-win results for other countries in Asia and the world over.By the end of 2004, China had attracted a total of 562.1 billion US dollars in FDI, approved the establishment in China of more than 500,000 foreign-funded enterprises and created a huge import market of some 560 billion US dollars annually.At present, most countries and regions have had enterprises with investment in China, and over 400 firms out of the FORTUNE 500 have invested in China.The number of R&D centers set up by foreign investors in China has exceeded 700.As China becomes more developed, its cooperation with the other countries and their corporations of various types is bound to increase in scale.China will keep opening up its market, find new ways of using foreign capital, improve on legislations and regulations for encouraging and protecting foreign investors, revamp foreign economic management, step up protection of intellectual property rights, and work still harder to help foreign investors and create an even better environment for trade and economic cooperation between China and the rest of the world.女士们、先生们！

尊敬的帕森斯先生，各位嘉宾，女士们，先生们：晚上好！在这个美好的夜晚，我很高兴同大家在这里相聚，参加2005年北京《财富》全球论坛的开幕式。首先，我谨代表中国政府，并以我个人的名义，对各位朋友的到来表示诚挚的欢迎！向论坛主办方美国时代华纳集团表示衷心的祝贺！
这次论坛确定以“中国和新的亚洲世纪”为主题，充分表达了大家对中国和亚洲发展前景的关注，表达了大家对中国及亚洲的发展对全球经济增长所发挥的作用的关注。这也充分说明，在经济全球化趋势深入发展的条件下，中国及亚洲的发展正在成为世界经济发展新的推动力量，世界经济发展也将给中国及亚洲发展带来新的重要机遇。世界各国经济互利合作、相互依存的加深，必将给全球经济增长创造更加美好的前景。
女士们、先生们！
中国是一个有着五千多年悠久历史的文明古国。长期以来，中国人民以自己的勤劳智慧创造了灿烂的中华文明，为人类文明进步作出了重大贡献。北京就是一座有3000多年悠久历史的文明古城，800多年前北京开始建都。离今晚会场人民大会堂不远的地方，就是举世闻名的故宫。故宫始建于600年前，是世界上现存最大最完整的古代宫殿建筑群。从历史悠久的北京和建筑精美的故宫这些缩影中，人们就能够生动地感受到中华文明源远流长、博大精深的深厚底蕴，感受到中华民族自强不息、顽强奋进的壮阔历程。
19世纪中叶以后，由于列强的野蛮侵略和封建统治的腐败无能，中华民族陷入了丧权辱国、民不聊生的悲惨境地。面对内忧外患，中国人民不懈抗争，终于在中国共产党领导下建立了新中国。新中国建立以来，特别是1978年实行邓小平先生倡导的改革开放政策以来，中国发生了前所未有的深刻变革。从1978年到2004年的26年间，中国国内生产总值从1473亿美元增长到16494亿美元，年均增长9．4％；进出口总额从206亿美元增长到11548亿美元，年均增长超过16％；国家外汇储备从1．67亿美元增长到6099亿美元；农村贫困人口由2．5亿人减少到2600万人，中国的综合国力显著增强，人民生活不断改善。中国人民在继承和发扬古老文明的基础上创造了新的历史。现在，13亿中国人民正万众一心地在中国特色社会主义道路上开拓前进。
中国已经明确了本世纪头20年的奋斗目标，这就是紧紧抓住重要战略机遇期，全面建设惠及十几亿人口的更高水平的小康社会，到2020年实现国内生产总值比2000年翻两番，达到40000亿美元左右，人均国内生产总值达到3000美元左右，使经济更加发展、民主更加健全、科教更加进步、文化更加繁荣、社会更加和谐、人民生活更加殷实。我们深知，中国在相当长时期内仍然是发展中国家，从中国有13亿人口的国情出发，实现这个奋斗目标是很不容易的，需要我们继续进行长期的艰苦奋斗。
为了实现这个目标，我们将坚持以科学发展观统领经济社会发展全局。我们将坚持以人为本，从最广大人民的根本利益出发，不断满足人民群众日益增长的物质文化需求，努力促进人的全面发展。我们将坚持以经济建设为中心，把发展作为第一要务，推动经济建设、政治建设、文化建设与和谐社会建设全面发展。我们将坚持社会主义市场经济的改革方向，进一步推动制度创新，不断深化改革，激发全社会的创造活力，增强经济社会发展的内在动力。我们将坚持对外开放的基本国策，建立更加开放的市场体系，在更大范围、更广领域、更高层次上参与国际经济技术合作和竞争。我们将坚持走新型工业化道路，着力调整经济结构和加快转变经济增长方式，提高经济增长的质量和效益，大力发展循环经济，建设资源节约型、环境友好型社会，走生产发展、生活富裕、生态良好的文明发展道路。我们相信，只要坚定不移地走符合中国国情的发展道路，我们就一定能够实现既定的奋斗目标，为维护世界和平、促进共同发展发挥更大的建设性作用。
女士们、先生们！
中国的发展同亚洲及世界的发展紧密相关。中国的发展已经并将继续为亚洲及世界各国带来合作共赢的机遇。截至2004年底，中国累计实际利用外商直接投资额达到5621亿美元，批准外商投资企业50多万个，并形成了年进口5600多亿美元的大市场。目前，绝大多数国家和地区都有企业来华投资，《财富》500强企业中已有400多家在华投资，外商投资在华设立的研发中心达700多家。随着中国的不断发展，中国同世界各国和各类企业的合作必将进一步扩大。中国将继续稳步开放市场，创新引进外资的形式，完善有关鼓励和保护外商投资的法律法规，改革涉外经济管理体制，加强知识产权保护，努力为中国的对外经贸合作和外国来华投资提供一切便利，创造更好的环境。
女士们、先生们！
在座各位大企业的领导人，是国际经济活动的重要参与者和推动者。长期以来，你们中的许多人及你们的企业，积极推动和开展与中国的经济技术合作，为中国经济的持续发展和中国有关产业技术水平的提高作出了重要贡献。实践证明，这种互利合作对双方都有利。我们欢迎各位继续扩大在中国的投资和贸易，加强同中国企业的经济技术合作。我相信，你们一定能够发挥各自的企业优势和丰富的经营经验，在推动国际经济技术合作、促进地区及世界经济发展方面发挥重要作用。让我们携手努力，为维护世界和平、促进共同发展作出更大的贡献。

Dear Richard D.Parsons, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen，Good evening!I am very delighted to be with you here to join in the opening ceremony of the 2005 FORTUNE Global Forum in Beijing on this beautifu l evening.To begin with, I'd like to, on behalf of the Chinese government, and also in my personal name, to express my sincere welcome to all of you, and congratulations to the forum sponsor, Time Warner Inc.!The forum, themed “China and the New Asian Century”, show the great concern over the prospects of development of China and Asia, and the roles of China nad Asia in the global economy.It also indicates that with surging economic globalization, China and Asia are quickly becoming a new growth engine for the world while the global boom is also generating more important opportunities for China and Asia.Continued mutually-beneficial economic cooperation and rising interdependence among the world's countries will usher in an even better future for global economy in development.Ladies and Gentlemen，China is an ancient civilization with a history dating back over 5,000 years.The Chinese people have made a major contribution to human progress by creating the splendid Chinese civilization with hard work and ingenuity.The city of Beijing, with its long history of over 3,000 years, stands testimony to that effort.It became the nation's capital over 800 years ago.A short distance from the Great Hall of the People, where we are in right now, is the world-renowned Forbidden City.First built some 600 years ago, the former Imperial Palace is the largest and most complete existing ensemble of ancient royal architecture in the world.From Beijing's time-honored past and the majestic Forbidden City itself, people can learn vividly the originality, greatness and profound richness of the Chinese civilization and feel for themselves the vigor, resilience and pioneering spirit of the Chinese nation.Beginning in the mid-19th century, China was reduced to dire misery as the country suffered one humiliating defeat after another and the people languished in poverty and starvation as a result of brutal foreign aggressions and corrupt and incompetent feudal rulers.Refusing to submit to a fate of agony and woe, the Chinese people fought back persistently and finally built up a New China under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party.Since 1949, when the New China was proclaimed, and particularly since the implementation of reform and opening-up program pioneered by Mr.Deng Xiaoping in 1978, China has undergone a profound transformation never seen in the country before.In a short span of 26 years from 1978 to 2004, China's GDP increased from 147.3 billion US dollars to 1.6494 trillion US dollars with an average annual growth rate of 9.4 percent.Its foreign trade rose from 20.6 billion US dollars to 1.1548 trillion US dollars, averaging an annual growth rate of over 16 percent.China's foreign exchange reserve increased from 167 million US dollars to 609.9 billion US dollars.The number of rural poor has dwindled from some 250 million to 26 million.The overall national strength of China has increased remarkably and the texture of life of its people improved steadily.While inheriting and carrying forward their proud past, the 1.3 billion Chinese people are writing a new chapter in history as they march of one mind on the road of building socialism with Chinese characteristics.We in China have identified the goal for the first 20 years of this century.That is to firmly seize the important window of strategic opportunities to build a moderately prosperous society of a higher standard in an all-round way for the benefits of our over one billion people.By 2020, we will quadruple China's GDP of 2000 to approximately 4 trillion US dollars with a per capita level of some 3,000 US dollars, and further develop the economy, improve democracy, advance science and education, enrich culture, foster greater social harmony and upgrade the texture of life for the people.We are deeply aware that China, for a considerably long period of time to come, will remain a developing country.The population figure of 1.3 billion alone will make the fulfillment of the above goal a formidable challenge, and we must be prepared for a long and uphill journey ahead.To realize this goal, we must uphold the scientific approach inachieving economic and social development of the country.We must put the people first, making the fundamental interests of the broadest masses of people our point of departure and endeavoring to satisfy their growing material and cultural needs to pursue the comprehensive development of man.We must focus on economic development as our central task, making development our top priority and facilitating and all-round progress in economic, political and cultural aspects and in the building of a harmonious society.We must stick to the direction of reform for a socialist market economy, step up institutional innovation, deepen reforms aimed at galvanizing creative vitality of society and increase the inherent dynamics for economic and social development.We must adhere to our basic policy of opening to the outside world, building a more open market place and allowing the country to participate more broadly in international economic and technological cooperation and competition with still wider and higher dimensions.We must follow a new course of industrialization, endeavor to overhaul the economic structure, quickly transform the ways of economic growth by improving its quality and efficiency, vigorously develop the circular economy and build a resource-effective and environment-friendly society, thus blazing a trail of development characterized by higher productivity, comfortable life for the people and a sustainable eco-system.We believe, as long as we firmly follow the path of development that is consistent with China's national conditions, we will be able to realize our goal and play a greater and more constructive role in the promotion of world peace and common development.Ladies and Gentlemen，China and the rest of Asia and the world at large are closely related when it comes to development.A developing China will, as always, generate cooperation opportunities with win-win results for other countries in Asia and the world over.By the end of 2004, China had attracted a total of 562.1 billion US dollars in FDI, approved the establishment in China of more than 500,000 foreign-funded enterprises and created a huge import market of some 560 billion US dollars annually.At present, most countries and regions have had enterprises with investment in China, and over 400 firms out of the FORTUNE 500 have invested in China.The number of R&D centers set up by foreign investors in China has exceeded 700.As China becomes more developed, its cooperation with the other countries and their corporations of various types is bound to increase in scale.China will keep opening up its market, find new ways of using foreign capital, improve on legislations and regulations for encouraging and protecting foreign investors, revamp foreign economic management, step up protection of intellectual property rights, and work still harder to help foreign investors and create an even better environment for trade and economic cooperation between China and the rest of the world.Ladies and Gentlemen，All of you are important corporate leaders participating and promoting international economic activities.Many of you and the companies you represent have been vigorously involved for years in pushing economic and technological cooperation with China and made significant contribution to China's sustained economic growth and technological upgrading in certain industries.Facts have proved that such cooperation serves our mutual interests.We look forward to continued expansion of your investment in China and your still closer economic and technological cooperation with Chinese enterprises.I believe that you will give greater scope to the advantages of your companies and your rich managerial expertise and play a
