立体派是西方现代艺术史上的一个运动和流派。又译为立方主义,1908年始于法国。这个名称的出现含有偶然性。1908年,G.布拉克在卡恩韦勒画廊展出作品,马蒂斯批评勃拉克的画是在描绘立方体.评论家L.活塞列斯在《吉尔.布拉斯》杂志上引用此话评论说:”布拉克先生将每件事物都还原了……成为立方体”,这种画风因此得名。

野兽派也叫野兽主义(Fauvism)是自1898至1908年在法国盛行一时的一个现代绘画潮流。它虽然没有明确的理论和纲领,但却是一定数量的画家在一段时期里聚合起来积极活动的结果,因而也可以被视为一个画派。野兽派画家热衷于运用鲜艳、浓重的色彩,往往用直接从颜料管中挤出的颜料,以直率、粗放的笔法,创造强烈的画面效果,充分显示出追求情感表达的表现主义倾向。

抽象表现主义(Abstract Expressionism),即抽象艺术、抽象表现派、抽象主义、抽象派,又称纽约画派(The New York School)或行动画派(Action Painting),一般被了解为一种非直接描绘自然世界的艺术,反而透过形状和颜色以主观方式来表达。是二次大战前的艺术运动,受超现实主义及继承苏俄构成主义的影响。20世纪初期,抽象艺术主要是指表达自然世界的艺术,譬如立体主义和未来派艺术。虽然夺取某事它不变的内在质量而不是由仿效它的外在表现。抽象派被定义为没有比喻现实参考的艺术。更广阔的定义是以简化但又可以保留原始自然的方式来描述真实题材。Joan Miro的抽象画是这个更宽的定义一个好例子。
