4.Reading Comprehension
By definition, heroes and heroines are men and women distinguished by uncommon courage, achievements, and self-sacrifice made most for the benefits of others-they are people against whom we measure others. They are men and women recognized for shaping our nation’s consciousness and development as well as the lives of those who admire them.Yet, some people say that ours is an age where true heroes and heroines are hard to come by, where the very idea of heroism is something beyond us-an artifact of the past. Some maintain, that because the Cold War is over and because America is at peace, our age is essentially an unheroic one.Furthermore, the
overall crime rate is down, poverty has been eased by a strong and growing economy, and advances continue to be made in medical science.Cultural icons are hard to define, but we know them when we see them. They are people who manage to go beyond celebrity, who are legendary, who somehow manage to become mythic,.But what makes some figures icons and others mere celebrities? That’s hard to answer. In part, their lives have the quality of a story to tell. For instance, the beautiful young Diana Spencer who at 19 married a prince, renounced marriage and the throne, and died at the moment she found true love.Good looks certainly help.So does a special indefinable charm, with the help of the media. But nothing confirms an icon more than a tragic death—such as Martin Luther King, Jr., John F.Kennedy, and Princess Diana.1)The passage mainly deals with __C______.A.life and deathB.heroes and heroines
C.heroes and iconsD.icons and celebrities
2)Heroes and heroines are usually __D______.A.courageousB.good examples to follow
C.self-sacrificingD.all of the above
3)Which of the following statements is wrong?D
A.Poverty in America has been eased with the economic growth
B.Superstars are famous for being famous
C.One’s look can contribute to being famous
D.Heroes and heroines can only emerge in war times
4)Beautiful young Diana Spencer found her genuine love _C_______.A.when she was 19B.when she became a princess
C.just before her deathD.after she gave birth to a prince
5)What is more likely to set an icon’s status?B
A.Good looks.B.Tragic and early death.C.Personal attraction.D.The quality of one’s story.

When I make a opposite sex friend, the first thing I notice is the appearance. But when the girl students look for a boyfriend ,to surprise ,only 14% of girl students think about the appearance and 11% think about the economic status first. The other 17%girls look for first is boy’s common interest and goals.ability and personality are two important things. If a boy has good ability or cool personality ,he may make a beautiful girlfriend.Because 27%girls think about the boy’s ability and31% girls think the personality is very important before making a boyfriend. We all wish our life become more and more happiness. But what’s the most important for a happy life?19.7%of girl students believe good career can bring them happinss.9.1%think money can make them feel happy.the largest group,68.2%of girls think a happiness marriage or getting on well with familiar is a happy life. But only3%think maybe other thing can bring a happy life] According to the result of the survey, through some girl think money can bring love and a happy life, more people believe something more important than money, such true love and family affection.范文:
What Do Girl Students Look for in Love and Life?
In order to know about girl students’ opinion about love and life, a survey with girl students was conducted in 2005 in two universities — Chongqing University of Technology and Business and East China Normal University. The survey sought answers to two questions: What do you look for first in a boyfriend? What’s the most important thing for a happy life? About one third of the students chose personality as the top factor in choosing a boyfriend, followed by 27 percent focusing on abilities.Next came common interests and goals, favoured by 17 percent, with only 14 percent of students claiming appearance to be uppermost in their minds.Fewer still, 11 percent, rated economic status as the first consideration. As to their views about a happy life, nearly seventy percent of the girls attached the greatest importance to marriage and family.“Career” was given top priority by just under 20 percent, while even fewer, around 9 percent, believed that money was the key to a happy life.Based on the survey, we may conclude that nowadays, girl students generally hold a rational attitude towards love and life.Admittedly, the improved material conditions of life explain why girls take economic status and money rather lightly. But contrary to the popular view that girls are more concerned about self-development in the workplace and social status, they still regard upon marriage and family life as central to a happy life. The picture show us that a flog tell to another flog on stone about “looks are not everything.it’s what’s inside you that really matters.” This conversation tells us that the appearance sometimes is not counts. In life, we always hear that a man was handsome but has a poor in side.So the appearance doesn’t mean everything, the important thing is the inside quality of a person. To be a outstanding man, we should try our best to increase our inside. On one hand, we must set up our value and hard study to increase our inside. On the other hand, making a friend with the outstanding avails us to learn from him for increasing our inside. All at all, I think the inside quality is a person’s most valuable thing.Because the appearance will become old in the future, but the inside quality will be more and more wonderful.

As a fresh man, I went to college just at two months ago.But recalling about the past two months, so many thoughts are flooding in my mind. There were so many new things that I felt I’m in a new world. When the first class I took at the university, there was no doubt that the style of study was totally different from that in high school. It was obvious that we would learn more professional knowledge in college.Personally, if you only make great efforts in study, maybe you can’t have a satisfactory marks, because everyone here is hard-working.According to the life of the past two months in college, I realized I must cultivate more friendship in future. No one can deny that we can make friends with not only peers but sophomores or juniors in college, and even foreigners.Without doubt, the college seems like a gate of new world. When we are having gone through the gate, we must achieve our dream together.

Can trees talk? Yes—but not in words.Scientists have reasons to believe that trees do communicate with each other. Not long ago, researchers learned some surprising things.First a willow tree(柳树)attacked in the woods by caterpillars(毛毛虫)changed the chemistry of its leaves and made them taste so terrible that the caterpillars got tired of the leaves and stopped eating them. The even more astonishing, the tree sent out a special vapour — a signal causing its neighbours to change the chemistry of their own leaves and make them less tasty.Communication, of course, doesn’t need to be always in words. We can talk to each other by smiling, raising our shoulders and moving our hands. We know that birds and animals use a whole vocabulary of songs, sounds, and movements.Bees dance their signals, flying in certain patterns that tell other bees where to find nectar(花蜜)for honey. So why shouldn’t trees have ways of sending messages?

B The interview had been going on for about 20 minutes and everything seems to be going well. Then, suddenly, the interviewer asks an unexpected question,“Which is more important, law or love?” Job applicants in the West increasingly find themselves asked strange questions like this. And the signs are that this is beginning to happen in China.Employers want people skilled, enthusiastic and devoted. So these are the qualities that any reasonably intelligent job applicants will try to show no matter what his or her actual feelings are.In response, employers are increasingly using questions which try and show the applicant's true personality. The question in the first paragraph comes from a test called the Keirsey Personality Sorter. It is an attempt to discover how people solve problems, rather than what they know. This is often called an aptitude test(能力倾向测验).
According to Mark Baldwin many job applicants in China are finding this type of questions difficult. When a Chinese person fills out an aptitude test he or she will think there is a right answer and they may fail because they try to guess what the examiner wants to see. This is sometimes called the prisoner's dilemma.Applicants are trying to act cleverly in their own interest. But they fail because they don't understand what the interviewer is looking for.Remember that in an aptitude test, the correct answer is always the honest answer.59.The writer wrote the passage to ________.
A.give a piece of advice for job interviewees
B.tell you how to meet a job interviewer
C.describe the aptitude test
D.advice you how to find a job

A.They want to discover what the interviewees know.B.They are curious about the answers.C.They try to discover the ability of the interviewees' solving problems.D.They just ask questions without thinking much.61.According to the writer,in an aptitude test,Chinese job applicants should ________.
A.not tell the truth

Walt Whitman was born in 1819 in New York City.During his long life,he watched America grow from a young nation to the strongest industrial power in the world.Whitman was influenced by events around him.But his poetry spoke of the inner self.He celebrated great people like President Abraham Lincoln. He also celebrated common people. As a young man,Whitman worked as a school teacher,a printer and a newspaper reporter. He was thirty-six years old when his first book of poetry was published. He called it Leaves of Grass. It has only twelve poems. The poems are written in free verse. The lines do not follow any set form. Some lines are short and some are long. The words at the end of each line do not have a similar sound. They do not rhyme. One of America’s greatest thinkers and writers immediately recognized the importance of Leaves of Grass.Ralph Waldo Emerson praised Whitman’s work. But most other poets and writers said nothing or denounced it.The American Civil War began in 1861.During the war,Whitman worked without pay at army hospitals. He helped care for the wounded and dying soldiers. He sat beside these men for hours. He brought them food and wrote letters for them. After the Civil War,Whitman worked for government agencies. He watched the United States try to heal itself and increase democracy. To Walt Whitman, democracy was more than a political system or idea.It was a natural form of government for free people.Whitman believed democracy was meant to honor the rights of every person and the equality of all people. In 1873,Walt Whitman suffered a stroke. He spent the last few years of his life in Camden,New Jersey and wrote more poems.Whitman was poor and weak during the

Sitting across from a German couple and a Chinese mother and her child,we were waiting at the Guilin airport for our delayed flight to Shanghai. In this last week of our travel-study tour,my husband and I were savoring this short break by reading.I tuned out the languages I couldn’t understand. But it was an American accent that pulled my attention from my book.It also pulled the attention of three rows of people seated around us as the American barked,“Coming through!Coming through!”
At the same time,an oversized man pulling an oversized carry-on passed our row.His wheeled bag caught the German’s feet.Turning to see what, the American fellow yanked his bag so hard that it crossed over the man’s feet.It was then that my horror struck. There was no “I’m sorry”,no “Excuse me” and no “Pardon me” coming from this countryman of mine.B.e,b,c,a,d D.e,b,a,c,d
While this wasn’t the first or last incident where I sighted discourteous,ill-mannered,rude Americans in China, each produced similar feelings.First,I was embarrassed that someone from my country was creating a negative impression of Americans. My second reaction was a desire to apologize.I wanted them to explain to the Chinese woman and her child, the German couple next to them, and everyone nearby that this was not typical American behavior.I wanted them to know “we” were all not like that.I never got to explain,or to apologize.Language differences made that option impossible, and rational thinking made it inappropriate. And it turned out not to be a need. The German caught my eyes with a bit of head-shaking,smiling and eye rolling, which I returned, and it was clear that he knew we were Americans and was expressing that there was “no need” to apologize for “universal idiot behavior”.
