(一)传说仓颉创造了文字。仓颉在野外的泥土上看到了鸟的足迹,它们有直有斜有交有叉,富有变化,而且每个线条都那么均匀、那么优美。于是他模仿鸟的足迹创造了字地笔画。这是造字的开始。后来,他又根据龟纹、虫蛇、黍稷、山川、草木等的形状动态,创造了文字。

(二)汉字与中国心

1998年春,我在纽约时,一位美国青年问我:“为什么中国人的凝聚力那么强?”

我答到:“第一,我们都吃中餐;第二,我们都讲中文,用汉字。”

汉字,确是人类一绝。其形、声、义俱全,信息量远远大于拼音文字。汉字又整齐灵活,特别适宜表达一种微妙的、诗意的情感。一些普通的字词,往往联结着久远的文化底蕴,例如“中华”“神州”“大地”“天涯”“芳草”“依依”……都能使受到中华文化教育的人浮想联翩,心潮难已,这是从翻译稿读中国文学作品的人所无法体会到的。

最能体现汉字,中文的这些特点的首推中国古典诗词,一个中国孩子,甚至在牙牙学语的时候,就能背诵许多古典诗词了,过年时吟“爆竹都声中一岁除”,春雨时吟“清明时节雨纷纷”,中秋时吟“明月几时有”,送别时吟“劝君更尽一杯酒”,喜悦时吟“漫卷诗书喜欲狂”,慷慨时吟“大江东去”,激越时吟“凭栏处满满雨歇”……古典诗词已经规定了、铸就了中国人的心理结构和表达方式。

我曾经对文学改革持激烈的反对态度。现在,人们渐渐明白汉字是不应该也不可能废除的了。以我国古典诗词为例,全部改成拼音文字以后,还能有原汁原味的诗词的存在吗?
