第一篇:Reflection on the lecture------英语讲座观后感
Reflection on the lecture:
Introduction to British Literature Content
Brief Introduction of the lecture William Shakespeare Charles Dickens Jane Austen and Pride and Prejudice Reflection on the lectureBy李鑫迪03a11102
Part IBrief Introduction of the lecture
I have been interested in British Literature ever since I red the book Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. So I was really pleasant to find that a lecture would be given about an introduction to British Literature talking about the three influential writers, William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens and one of my favorite woman writer Jane Austen. The lecture was given by the British teacher Jenna Victoria Shorten, and the humorous and cute teacher with an authentic British accent have brought all of us back to 19th century and we can focus on the three writers again from the point of view of a local resident. That’s something definitely appealing and attractive.Part IIWilliam Shakespeare, the greatest bard and playwright
The lecture started at half past six and with the first introduction on William Shakespeare, the greatest poet and playwright ever.He is often called England's national poet and the “Bard of Avon”.His surviving works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. He was born in the golden age of England. That’s one of the reasons why he could have produced so many fantastic works.I have been interested in the plays written by Shakespeare, the Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet and a Midsummer Night's Dream, the tragedies are moving and the comedies are vivid and funny. All of these made me interesting in the other details about Shakespeare. From the lecture the impression on the famous drama flushed back to me and I recalled the feeling when reading poets and drama. As the lecture goes on, Jenna analyzed the sparking points in Shakespeare’s drama, the outstanding psychological understanding of people. The anger, hatred, jealousy, love, guilt… The following famous quotes showed us this great ability of the greatest bard. Then we were shown the sources
which the great stories came from, the myths, the Greek and Roman history stories and the English history.Proverb is also something common but legendary, as one was written centuries ago but now everybody is still using it, such as the usage of ‘You eat me out of house’.Jenna and we shared English proverbs and Chinese ones, which was really an interesting section of the lecture. The curse of the tombstone of Shakespeare was told as an affair.Part IIICharles Dickens, the social critic
The second writer introduced was the one and only great social critic, Charles Dickens. The writer is generally regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian period and the creator of some of the world's most memorable fictional characters.During his lifetime Dickens' works enjoyed unprecedented popularity and fame, but it was in the twentieth century that his literary genius was fully recognized by critics and scholars. His novels and short stories continue to enjoy an enduring popularity among the general reading public.Oliver Twist, the Christmas Carol and a Tale of Two Cities are great works at that age and right now.I was surprised to know that the novel by Dickens had been cliffhanger on the local newspaper, and which was one of the reasons why they had been so popular with the readers.Dickens was a writer with social conscience, as he was talking about the social issues that have been forgotten by the middle and top class, for instance, the orphans, the workhouse, the child labor and the new poor law.Charles Dickens is
different from most of the writers as he has an antique perspective to look at the society and he’s got responsibility to reveal the black side to the world and to draw attention from the unknown to care about the people in trouble.I really admire his courage and his kindness, and of course his great writing ability.Part ivjane austen, the witty observer of the middle class
Finally it was Jane Austen, the writer I know the love and love the most among the three.Jane is famous for her permanent topic about marriage. The masterpieces of hers include Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Sense and Sensibility. And these works of romantic fiction, set among the landed gentry, earned her a place as one of the most widely read writers in English literature. Her realism and biting social commentary has gained her historical importance among scholars and critics.Since Pride and Prejudice is my favorite novel, and I want to talk about it as part of the introduction and comments on Jane Austen. The novel Pride and Prejudice was first published in 1813.The story follows the main character Elizabeth Bennet as she deals with issues of manners, upbringing, morality, education, and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of early 19th-
century England.Elizabeth is the second of five daughters of a country gentleman living near the fictional town of Meryton in Hertfordshire, near London.Though the story is set at the turn of the 19th century, it retains a fascination for modern readers, continuing near the top of lists of 'most loved books' such as The Big Read.It has become one of the most popular novels in English literature and receives considerable attention from literary scholars.Modern interest in the book has resulted in a number of dramatic adaptations and an abundance of novels and stories imitating Austen's memorable characters or themes. To date, the book has sold some 20 million copies worldwide.I like the characters in the book, the arrogant and perfect Darcy, the independent and intelligent Elizabeth, the kind and merciful Bingley and Jane.Every character is vivid and lively shown. The story is beautiful, attractive and meaningful. And above all, why do we love her and her novels?
In my opinion, Jane’s book is romantic and at the same time analyzing the
rational facts about love and marriage.Books written from the point of view of woman and that can simply attract girls’ attention and caused the same feeling in our hearts. What’s more, Jane’s books are about marriage, associated with money, social status and so on, but the final destination is always ‘love’.Love is what girls pursue, and Jane
proved it throughout her whole lifetime. She waited and waited for her true love to come and stayed single till the moment she passed away. That made her novels seems more persuasive than those writers, who are always talking about love but end up marrying someone for their money. That’s why I love Pride and Prejudice, that’s why I love Jane Austen. Her works bring me back to the belief about love and bring me back to the romantic ages of the 19th century. This novelist and her work are just amazing.Part VReflection on the lecture
The lecture ended in a brief piece of movie, adapted from Pride and Prejudice but set in the modern days. And I looked for the movie and finished it, reminded of the great impact of the classic literal works that we discussed during the lecture.I was amazed by the beauty of the great writers and the masterpieces they brought us.The lecture was in a cozy atmosphere but everyone has learnt a lot from Jenna about what are the meanings for the books abroad. The places the authors lived, the anecdotes happened on them, the quotes we been using nowadays……We have known more about the great people who lived centuries ago. This is really a good lecture and I enjoyed it a lot.
