近期高校密集开学，开学典礼上，各校校长免不了对新生提出要求和期望。复旦大学校长杨玉良在谈及“为什么要上大学”时，引用复旦老校长李登辉在上世纪20年代说过的一句话告诫新生：如果你是为了升官发财来到复旦学习，那么你在学校会受到鄙视。
一般语境下，“升官发财”似是一个贬义词组，与“贪图富贵”同义，为很多人口头上所不齿。在中国传统文化中，读书人首先要“诚意、正心、修身”，做一个道德君子，此乃立身之本；现代大学教育也讲求精神、气质、品格，升官发财太世俗，似与大学精神格格不入。无论是复旦老校长说那句话，还是现任复旦校长重复这句话，大概就是基于这样的观念。
但是，倘若不说升官发财，而是说做官员或做公仆、做企业家或做生意，大概就显得光鲜亮丽而无贬义了。其实两者本质上是一回事，只是换了一种说法，因此，升官发财本不该是贬义词组，而应是中性词组。在中国传统文化中，读书人“诚意、正心、修身”之后，应该做的就是“学而优则仕”，通过做官、做大官来“治国、平天下”；现代教育优于古代教育之处，在于做官并非读书人的唯一目标，职业选择、生活方式多元化，人们上大学的目的五花八门，但做官仍是目标之一。事实上，如果说古代科举是选拔官员的途径，那么，现代大学教育则承担着培养未来官员的重任，不该鄙视学生为做官、升官而读书。
做官，一种职业选择罢了，任何职业都在获取自身利益的同时为社会作贡献，何况从“应然”角度说，做官也可以造福于民。大学毕业生选择从政，乃至从一开始就冲着做官读大学，实在没什么可丢人的。做官如此，发财亦然。现在高校鼓励大学毕业生自主创业，说不定将来会涌现出一批企业家。企业家自己发财，同时为政府贡献税收，为社会提供工作岗位，这是荣耀之事。高校一方面鼓励毕业生创业，一方面鄙视学生为发财而读书，有些自相矛盾。在这个开放多元的社会，升官发财尽管为一些人口头上所不齿，但事实上是很多人努力奋斗的目标，连一些高校也以培养了多少高官、富豪为荣。这本来没什么问题，问题在于，有些人为了升官发财不择手段，罔顾法律和规则；有些人升官之后贪腐堕落、为所欲为；有些人发财之后为富不仁、横行霸道。在某种意义上，正是这些人败坏了“升官发财”的声誉。
原因当然是多方面，如果从教育上找原因，那么我认为，恰恰因为学校的思想道德教育过于假、大、空，脱离社会实际和学生所思所想，从而出现道德虚无化、精神荒漠化。与其希冀将学生打造成道德君子，不如放下身段，将教育的目标确定为培养遵守法律和规则、具有法治精神和规则意识的合格公民，在此基础上让道德因子自然生长。
拿升官发财来说，学校大可不必教育学生鄙视升官发财——这样的说教本身就很虚伪，不会有多少学生相信——而是要教育学生通过合法、正当的途径升官发财；升官之后要有更大作为，要廉洁自律、服务于民；发财之后更要遵纪守法，不要横行霸道，要履行作为富人的社会责任，不要为富不仁。我想，这样的教育更能为学生所接受，对学生、对社会更具有实际意义。

这件事情在我看来大学生和农民工是没有可比性的，因为前者是做脑力劳动的，后者是做体力劳动的。我们不能用工资的高低来判断一个人的价值，这是不公平的。对于大学生来说开始工作的工资确实不高，需要积累一定的经验。
