【摘要】中英结合的校园标识语越来越多地出现在学校的每个角落。为了给我们的学生提供一个规范的英语语言环境，本文在总结一般校园标识语语言特征的基础上，提出了几种校园标识语的英译方法。

在全球经济一体化的背景下，中国在商业、贸易、金融等对外交往日益频繁；随着北京奥运会的举办和上海世博会的召开，英语作为一门公认的通用语言已经无声无息地渗透到中国普通百姓的生活当中。例如，街道上你随处可见到形式多样、内容广泛的中英标示语。而学校作为学生学习外语的主要场所，也逐渐意识到要为学生提供更多学习英语的良好氛围，除了拥有优秀的师资队伍和丰富的校园文化活动之外，还把校园标识语译成英语，既向学生宣传了基本的道德行为规范也为学校营造浓厚的学术氛围起到积极的促进作用。

一、标示语的内涵和应用范围

标识语是一种常用的应用文体，它被广泛的用于现代社会各种公众场所如：银行、宾馆、旅游景点、影院、图书馆、医院等；是向人们提出要求、指示、提醒、警告等功能的文字或生动的图像。标识语的出现是人类社会精神文明进步的表现，不仅为人们出行提供便利也大大的提高了他们的工作效率，标识语已经成为人们生活必不可少的语言。

二、校园标识语的语言特征

目前，大多数校园已逐步将标识语双语化，特别是在高校中英结合的校园标识语成为一道独特的风景线，让外籍教师能准确的了解学校信息，又为学生如何在实际语境中运用英语树立良好的榜样。校园标识语和其他公共场所的标识语有所不同，使用的对象和语境的特殊性使得校园标识语逐步形成了自己独特的语言特征。

1.语言使用准确、规范。这完全是由校园的实际语境决定的。学校本来就是一个提倡使用规范语言的地方，任何的翻译或拼写的错误都要避免。例如：教师休息室是staff room 或者common room而不是teacher’s preparing room., 教研室teaching and research room.应用于替代JiaoYan Shi。2.经常出现俚语、谚语和口号。为了鼓励学生养成勤奋学习，积极进取的精神风貌，学校标识语常选用一些富有哲理、催人上进的经典格言。在大一年级教室里就出现了“好的开始是成功的一半”（Well begun, half done!）、“千里之行始于足下”（A thousand-li journey begins with the first step.），还有提倡学生爱祖国、爱人民、爱劳动、爱科学、爱护公物的“五爱” 口号（Love the motherland, the people, labor, and science and take good care of public property.）。让学生觉得熟悉又通俗易懂。

3．较少使用祈使句，多用比喻、拟人等修辞写法，引起学生的共鸣。学生是学校的主体，如果总使用祈使句告诫学生，势必会引起大家的反感。就像“请勿践踏草地！”（Please keep off the grass!）在其他场合是适合的，然而在学校的特殊语境下可以婉转的表达为“小草有生命，脚下请留情”（Little grass has life, please watch your step.）或者“小草微微笑，请您走便道”（Little grass is smiling slightly.Please walk on the pavement.）。与祈使句生硬的语气相比，校园标识语采用拟人的写法赋予事物以生命，缩短了学生与大自然间的距离，让人产生怜悯而不忍破坏环境，效果更好。

三、校园标识语的翻译方法

鉴于校园标识语的作用日益突出，会出现越来越多英译的校园标识语。这个任务主要落到了在校教师和学生的身上。但是不少标识语的英译出现单词拼写错误、歪曲原义、无视中外文化差异或是直译成中式英语等问题，不但引起笑话也误导了学生。为了使校园标识语英译能准确表达出原义的内涵又不失幽默感和文化气息，在此有必要探讨校园标识语英译的几种方法。

1．尽量使用在英语国家约定俗成的译文。其实，在英国、美国等英语为母语的国家早就形成了一批固定的标识语，多用于要求、警告的语气。在图书馆我们可以看到“保持安静”（Keep silence!）、教室里出现“此处不准吃食物”（No food consumed in this area!）、教学楼走道有“严禁攀爬”（No climbing!）。此外，当翻译学校名或教师职称时，也可广泛使用英语国家的源来词。例如：师范大学（normal university）、工业大学(polytechnical university)、音乐学院(conservatory of music)、中等专业学校（secondary specialized school）,教师包括如教务长（dean of studies）、讲师（lecturer）、助教（assistant）、辅导员（assistant for political and ideological work）。它们都符合英语国家的习惯，外籍人士最为熟悉和了解。

2．要准确翻译标识语关键在于理解，只有充分理解标识语的汉语意义和了解英语国家的习惯，才能尽量避免引起歧异和笑话。在北京曾经出现过“小心滑倒(Caution ,slippery!/Caution, wet floor!)”被译成了 “要小心的滑一跤”（Please take care to slip down）的现象，让外国人不知所云，更别谈理解其本意了。其实，有时不需逐字逐句翻译，只要用简单直译就能准确表达。学生常说“学校是我家，卫生靠大家。”可译成（Keep our school clean!），简洁明了。

3．当标识语英译时，选择的词汇要考虑到使用对象和特殊语境的限制。学校食堂向学生提倡“请节约粮食”（Please economize food supplies），句中的economize是指save money, time, resources/spend less than before 即“节省金钱、时间、资源等，减少花费。显然，这句标识语希望学生不要浪费粮食，而不是让学生减少进食，所以可选择Please save food 较为适合（雷锦，2006）。选词还需考虑语句当中的词性搭配，简单译文甚至可使用一个名词也能作为标识语，如入口处（Entrance）、体育馆（Gymnasium）。但遇到句子就容易要仔细观察上下句，杜绝词性混乱。上面提到过的“小心路滑”的译文To take notice of safe;The slippery are very crafty.中的safe一般可用作形容词指“安全的”或者名词指“保险箱、冷藏箱”，在句子中明显需要的是指“安全”含义的名词safety而不是指包含“保险箱、冷藏箱”的名词safe。其次，crafty专指某人狡猾、诡计多端、善于骗人，而被用来说明地面湿滑，真是让人啼笑皆非。

4．由于中国和英语国家历史背景发展的不同，各自形成了与众不同的语言和文化，因此我们在英译时难以忽视中英文化差异，只单纯追求翻译出字面意思，只会适得其反。把教师休息室译成Teacher’s restroom 在英语国家人看来的意思是“教师的厕所”，因为restroom 在英语文化中特指洗手间或厕所。正确的译文即为staff room/common room或者Teacher lounges。（杨丽波，夏望秋，2007）

随着中国国际地位的提升，我们将需要更多了解中外文化的英语人才。优美、干净的校园为我们学生提供了优越的学习环境，更重要的是创造内容健康丰富形式多样的校园文化才是培养优秀人才的沃土。标识语作为校园文化展示的小窗口，需要你我不断“净化”，才能为我们的莘莘学子提供规范准确的语言环境。

教育要面向21世纪。教育现代化工程需要培养高素质创造型人才，改革强化外语教学是加强学生外语素质已经成为21世纪人才的必需的工作，如何促进外语教学，提高人才的素质，是当前学校教学中的一个重要工程。

探索创设外语文化氛围，形成外语学习环境，增强外语学习兴趣，提高外语听说读写能力，在第二课堂领域既创设语言实践环境，又开展多种适合学生心理的生理特点的活动，从多角度、全方位培养学生英语语言素质从而为现代人才培养开辟更科学更现代的教学环境。

现代外语教学论认为，英语教学的根本目的是使学生能以英语为交际工具，从而达到交际的目的。根据交际性英语教学原则，英语教学要为学生设置运用语言的环境，使学生通过大量的交际性活动总结和掌握语言的规律，并在交际活动中去实践，从而培养交际能力。

但是课堂容量毕竟有限，要在四十五分钟内让五、六十个学生人人都能充分交际，在下意识中习得语言几乎很难；其次，在我国的中考体制未作改变的前提下，要教师们完全放弃“分数”的顾虑而潜心培养学生的“交际”能力，也是件很难的事情，毕竟学生的考试成绩与教师的前途和发展有着千丝万缕的联系。校园英语氛围是指导学校校园内所营造的英语外在环境，学习条件、学习活动特别是第二课堂的英语兴趣活动，凡是有利于巩固研究提高学习外语基本技能的实践，打破课堂界线，提高学习兴趣的一切活动。学生的英语素质是指相应年龄段学生应具备的水平和能力，并且认定语言素质是重要素质之一，英语素质更是现代人才的必备之条件。

怎样才能既培养学生的英语学习兴趣，完成教学任务，获得好的教学效果，又能不负学生的前途发展，培养他们的英语交际能力呢？笔者通过近几年的教学实践发现，把我们的课堂交际活动延伸到课外，扩展到校园的每一个角落，精心组织好课外英语学习活动，营造一种浓厚的英语学习氛围，不失为一种既能真正培养学生的交际能力，又能丰富活跃校园生活的好方法。

一、精心布置校园，让学生时刻感受英语

一个良好的英语学习氛围不仅能激起人们说英语的欲望，还能培养人们用英语思维交际的习惯。我校是一所创办只有两年多的实验中学，由于学校领导对英语教学的重视，从创办伊始，我们就注意英语学习氛围的营造：

1、让英语遍及校园的每个角落。校园是学生学习、生活的主要场所，为了营造一种浓厚英语学习氛围，我们对学校的所有指示牌和警句牌都用英汉双语书写，指示牌如：Teachers’Office(教师办公室)；Ladies’Restroom(女厕所)等。警句牌如：I’m sleeping.Let me alone.(小草正在睡觉，请勿打扰);The world is like a mirror.Frown at it and it frowns at you.Smile and it smiles too.(世界如一面镜子。皱眉视之，它也皱眉看你；笑着对它，它也笑着看你——H.L塞缪尔)。发扬福根精神，吃苦奋斗成功奉献 Developing fugen’s spirit , bearing hardships ,struggling succeeding offering

做现代人，做未来人，做世界人 Become a modern person Become a futureoriented person Become an international person 以吃苦为乐 Regard bearing as happiness以奋斗为乐 Regard striving as happiness以成功为乐 Regard succeeding as happiness以奉献为乐 Regard offering as happiness

这些标志牌既能给学生增加许多无意间习得英语的机会，又能让学生时刻感受到英语的存在与重要。

2、用英语装点每间教室

学生每天的大部分时间是在教室里度过的，良好的学习氛围会不知不觉带动每个学生的学习热情，营造教室的英语学习氛围对学生的影响至关重要。

首先，教室两边墙壁上，名人警句可用英汉双语书写，并经常更换。

第二，利用教室后面的黑板报创设英语园地，同时还可要求学生每隔一段时期设计一期纯英语版黑板报，让学生在感受到母语博大精深的同时也随时领略英语的无穷乐趣。

第三，在教室前黑板上创设英语“自留地”。黑板是学生在教室里视线停留最多的地方，要充分利用这块宝地，让学生随时感受英语。黑板上都有两个栏目：一日课程安排和每日一句名言。笔者便把这两栏作为英语“自留地”，要求学生用英语书写，然后再在黑板左上角加一栏：由值日生用英语书写当天的日期、星期和天气。这样黑板上的三块“自留地”所占面积不大，不影响教学，凭它们的实用和美观对学生的渲染作用可不小。

3、让校园的早晨一片朗朗读书声

朗读是学习英语、培养语感的一个很重要的途径，非母语人员学习外语就必须多朗读、多模仿来纠正语音，获得语感。精心组织好学生的早读对学生的英语学习有着至关重要的作用。要组织好早读首先要让学生明确目标，规定一定任务，让学生有事可做；然后教师要注意方法指导，指导学生用正确的语音、语调、停顿方式来朗读；最后还要对学生进行适当评价，让学生知道自己的进步、自己的不足和努力的方向。清晨朗朗的读书声不仅能让学生巩固知识、培养语感、训练口语，也是校园英语氛围的一个重要组成部分。

二、精心组织校园英语活动，培养学生“听”“说”能力。由于社会文化环境不同，我们的学生学习英语不可能象以英语为母语的学习者那样获得足够的语言刺激并内化成语言规则进而自然习得英语，但是我们可以尽可能多地为学生提供条件，创设语言习得环境，让学生逐渐视英语为生活的一部分，不由自主地甚至自然而然地用英语交际，为此，教师可以精心组织校园英语活动，培养学生的“听”“说”能力。

1、组织校园英语广播站 学生最感兴趣的事情莫过于发生在自己本人、本班及周围的事。英语广播站播出的每期内容里不仅有每个班级选送的优秀稿件；有他们能听懂的英语小新闻；有对最受他们欢迎的老师、同学的采访；还有他们到处找寻的与课文故事有关的英文歌曲等。每周有这样的节目，学生们都会兴趣盎然地一听到底，并且会努力争取下期有自己的节目，这样会极大地调动每一个学生的参与热情，培养他们的“听”“说”“写”的能力。

2、创设“英语角”

要培养学生的交际能力就要为他们多提供语言实践的机会，创设“英语角”就能为学生提供极好的“身临其境”的英语交流机会。要使“英语角”体现它的最佳价值，并能长期稳定地发挥其作用，每次活动前要精心策划好本次活动的内容、形式、辅助工具（如音像器材、卡片、奖品等），要预先考虑学生可能会遇到的困难及解决办法；也要考虑到途中可能导致冷场的因素及相应对策，要有新颖的内容，灵活多样的组织形式；还要有能激发学生积极性的评价方式。要使每次活动都高潮迭起，有始有终，还依赖于教师的组织调控。对于在初中生中组织“英语角”活动，教师的参与非常重要，学生喜欢和他们的老师（尤其是外教）交流，并且在很大程度上他们还依赖他们的教师，“英语角”活动为培养学生的用英语思维能力和口语交际能力，起了极为重要的作用。浓厚的英语氛围和丰富多彩的校园英语活动极大地提高了我校学生的口语水平，学生乐于用英语交流，并且相当一部分还说得很地道。本期我校聘请的外教在给几个班级上完一次口语课后也对学生们的口语水平给予了极高的评价，三、综合利用学校资源与环境，培养学生“读”“写”能力。现代外语交际教学法认为，学生习得语言的顺序是“听”“说”领先，“读”“写”跟上。只有给予学生足够的语言输入（Imput），才可能有他们高质量的输出（Output）。在为学生营造浓厚的“听”“说”英语氛围的同时，也要为他提供能培养他们“读”“写”能力的园地。

1、充分利用学校阅览室和校园网络资源，培养学生课外阅读能力

阅读是学生获取语言信息的主要途径之一。为了让学生充分利用好这一语言输入的重要途径，笔者认为可充分利用学校阅览室和校园网络资源，让学生开展大量的课外阅读，培养他们的阅读能力，要精选阅读材料，规定阅读数量。熟悉学校阅览室和校园网络上适合学生阅读的书目或内容，难度适宜的报刊和书籍。

掌握阅读策略是培养学生自主阅读能力的关键，为了提高学生课外阅读的速度和效率，要指导学生养成良好的阅读习惯，要指导学生进行限时阅读，以提高阅读速度；还要帮助学生总结阅读技巧，如找关键词、找主题句、掠读、略读等，鼓励学生写读书笔记。为了督促每一位学生都认真完成阅读任务并达到预期的效果，就要定期对学生的课外阅读进行检查和评价。

2、精心组织课外写作训练，培养学生写作能力。

英语写作是英语学习较高阶段的语言输出，是学生综合运用能力中必不可少的一种，要培养学生的写作能力，仍然可借助于具有浓厚英语气氛的校园。

1）利用英语广播播出学生习作，激起写作热情。英语广播站是学生英语习作最直接的发表园地。

3）指导学生出好英语墙报。一块高质量的英语墙报能体现学生的综合素质和能力，从设计到内容的选定到书写无一不是学生综合能力的体现，因为墙报的周期性短，一般所有的学生都有机会参与，是培养学生写作能力的好园地。

3.在户外活动中创设环境，使训练更加交际化。学生学英语的目的就是为了更好地运用语言于实际的交际之中。户外活动与大自然接触，户外活动使同学们和教师进入实际背景之中，同学们在这里自由自在地去提问，去讨论，不断地练习交往的技能，对学生表达来说有很好的作用。教师要把大自然看作是一本活教材，作为教育学生的大课堂，充分利用周围环境，使表达更加交际化。4．我校每年举办一次校园文体艺术节。其中英语活动是一大亮点。活动如：英语歌曲演唱，英语诗歌朗诵，英语剧本表演等。深受老师和同学们的喜爱。还有对各办公室、教室、专业课室进行英语门牌补充，对走廊部分位置、洗手间、多功能教室等添加英语标示，在各走廊电源开关处做英语短文、幽默、名人名言装饰，多方面营造英语氛围；每周两个时段进行英语广播；英语原版影片欣赏活动，英语原版动画片欣赏活动；英语手抄报、班报大赛，每年级学生各布置一个如购物、动物园、游乐场、家庭等的英语场景，继续进行英语歌曲、小韵文、名人名言、小故事的英语课教学；（6）开展“大家说英语”活动，让英语走进家庭，社区，让更多的人了解英语，学习英语，运用英语

5．在活动中创设环境，增强训练力度。在活动中学生能自由自在地用不同方式与周围学生交往，促进语言能力的发展。教师在组织活动时，各种对话、角色安排，尽量多用英语引导学生积极主动地进行交流，激发他们参与英语活动以及运用英语交际动机，在学生活动的起劲的时候,教师点拨用英语怎么说，就这样，让学生参与活动的兴致特别高，并且在轻松愉快的气氛中参与过程，学会了新的句子和单词，留下了很深的印象。孩子在活动中体验到了成功的愉悦，这种愉悦感使学生对英语产生了无止境的渴求，更有利学生的能力的提高。四．英语小活动总结

（一）教唱英语歌曲

唱歌能陶冶人的情操，优美的旋律能给人带来欢乐，绝大多数学生喜欢唱歌。而英语歌曲，他们更觉新鲜、有趣。因此，学生常常是积极地主动地请老师教，自己自觉地练。我曾在一期内教了“Good Morning to you”.“Fly kite”等近20首歌曲，由于学生对英文歌曲特别感兴趣，他们便经常唱，反复唱。这样，他们的在体验音乐美感的同时，不自觉地复习或学习了一些单词、句型，从而提高了他们记忆能力和英语学习的兴趣。比赛既为选手们提供了一次展现自我的机会，又给观看的同学带来了一次愉悦的精神享受，增强了同学们对外文歌曲的兴趣，提高了同学们对外文歌曲的欣赏力。

（二）这一学期的电影在内容上比以前更加丰富，类别上也分得更加详细具体。主要放映的影片有：家庭温馨系列：《二手狮王》，《三代同堂》，《火柴人》。经典名著改编：《傲慢与偏见》，《蝴蝶梦》。战争背景题材：《阿甘正传》，《英国病人》，《钢琴战曲》。喜剧类：《我的超级希腊婚礼》，《超级插班生》。严肃题材：《沉默的羔羊》，《紫色》。爱情经典：《西雅图不眠夜》。剖析人性：《飞越疯人院》，《电话亭》 电影大餐丰富了同学们的课余生活，开阔了同学们的视野，有利于他们在增长见识的同时反思自我、提高自我。同时，原声电影的放映对于提高英语听力，增强对外国文化的理解有很大的促进作用，使同学们更深刻的感受英语听说的魅力，提高学习英语的兴趣，从而在英语学习中投入更多的努力和热忱。这正是我们这个活动的意义所在。

（三）英语口头表达，历来是学生英语学习的一个不可缺少的环节，是检测一个学生英语综合水平的试金石。为此，我们在每年举办一届陈毅中学文体艺术节中举办英语朗诵演讲比赛，作为组织者，我们热切地希望全体学子积极报名参加这样一个难得的学习锻炼自己英语口头表达能力的机会，使自己的英语学习达到一个更加理想的彼岸。

（四）、组织英语竞赛活动

想让别人知道自己的长处，这是正常人的普遍心理，这一点在中学生言行中表现得尤为突出。据此，我组织了以年级为单位的英语竞赛活动，如英语书法比赛、口语比赛、听力比赛、英语单词的听写、默写比赛、英语书面表达比赛等，并组织评委认真评定，评出集体奖和个人奖，并给予物质和精神奖励，对获得全年级前三名的学生，我们还以贺信的形式向学生家长表示祝贺，这极大地鼓励了学生学习外语的积极性。

（五）、组织地编写活动

培养学生的编写能力对学生今后的学习和工作将产生重大的积极影响。我每个年级都组织了一个编写小组，每小组3人，要求每小组每两周出一次墙报，每一月出一张油印报，每一期出两次英语复习资料。这些学生热情高，均能按时、按质、按量完成任务，其他学生宁可不读其他报刊，但学生编的却要期期读、认真读，这就丰富了外语学习的形式。

（六）、营造英语语言氛围

为了向学生创设英语语言环境，老师除了在课堂上尽力用英语组织教学外，我们还做了如下探索。首先，英语教师之间交流要用英语，并鼓励年级较高的学生课后要多使用英语；第二，学校花园为英语角落，每逢周五晚英语教师和各班英语爱好者自觉相聚于此，用英语交流思想，交流学习；第三，充分利用校广播定时播放英语广播讲座或英语教学磁带，这种语言环境的营造使学生体会到学英语有趣，学英语有用，英语容易学。

（七）开展英语研究性学习课程。学校根据大纲要求，专门开设英语研究性学习课程，每学期初，通过教研，制定本学期的研究课题，然后分课时让学生去研究完成，一学期进行一次总结评比，让学生从中受益非浅。

（八）进行英语手抄报比赛。不同年级根据所学知识，学生自己做手抄报，也可以用电脑制作，锻炼学生的动脑和动手能力，体现学生知识的运用能力，并惊醒评比，优秀的张贴在学校手抄报专栏，或班内墙报。

（九）英语班内环境布置。每班根据自己班内实际，布置与英语有关的形式，发挥学生的创造力，想象力，体现英语活动式教学的特色。如英语角。

（十）英语课本剧表演比赛，每个年级根据已学习的课本内容，自编自演，（十一）、指导学生课外阅读

阅读分精读和泛读，我们把课文作为精读教材，在课堂上进行。每教完一个单元后，我又从《中小学外语教学》、《中学生英语读写》等刊物选出一至二篇同步阅读材料，作为泛读在课外进行，这种文章的长度和深浅程度与相应课文相似，适应学生的实际水平，有时，还可向学生推荐一些英语简易读物，这样就大大增强了学生的阅读量

（十二）计算机教学，英语教学是现代人才培养必不可少的两个重要方面，是现代化教育不可分割的重要部分。重视信息课程，重视培养学生外语素质，是走向现代化教学的必由之路。通过计算机辅助英语教学的尝试，使学生学会收集信息，处理信息初步解决各种问题的能力，同时让学生深切感受到学好英语可以更有利于掌握信息技术，并去寻求更广泛的信息来源，而信息技术又辅助英语教学的深入。实现五机一幕（微机、VCD机、录像机、录昔机、幻灯机）推进信息技术运用，实现学校教育信息化，英语教学特色化，从而走向教育现代化为培养和造就符合现代化建设所需要的人才。

总之，精心创设校园英语氛围，创造良好的语言学习环境，让学生视英语为生活的一部分，处处感受英语，自然地学习英语，交流英语，养成良好的语言学习习惯，在实际生活中培养用英语交际的能力。

抱薪救火

战国末期，秦国向魏国接连发动大规模的进攻，魏国无力抵抗，大片土地都被秦军占领了。到公元前273年，秦国又一次向魏国出兵，势头空前猛烈。

魏王把大臣们召来，愁眉苦脸地问大家有没有使秦国退兵的办法。大臣们由于经过多年的战乱，提起打仗就吓得哆嗦，谁也不敢谈“抵抗”二字。在这大兵压境的危急时刻，多数大臣都劝魏王，用黄河以北和太行山以南的大片土地为代价，向秦王求和。

谋士苏代听了这些话，很不以为然，忙上前对魏王说：“大王，他们是因为自己胆小怕死，才让您去卖国求和，根本不为国家着想。您想，把大片土地割让给秦国虽然暂时满足了秦王的野心，但秦国的欲望是无止境的，只要魏国的土地没割完，秦军就不会停止进攻我们。”

说到这里，苏代讲了一个故事：从前有一个人，他的房子起火了，别人劝他快用水去浇灭大火，但他不听，偏抱起一捆柴草去救火，是因为他不懂得柴草不但不能灭火反而能助长火势的道理。大王若同意拿着魏国土地去求和，不就等于抱着柴草救火吗？”

尽管苏代讲得头头是道，但是胆小的魏王只顾眼前的太平，还是依大臣们的意见把魏国大片土地割让给秦国。到公元225年，果然秦军又向魏国大举进攻，包围了国都大梁，掘开黄河大堤让洪水淹没了大梁城，魏国终于被秦国灭掉了。

故事出自《史记·魏世家》。成语“抱薪救火”比喻用错误的方法去消灭祸害，结果反而使祸害扩大。

Carrying Faggots to Put Out a Fire In the last years of the Warring States period, the State of Qin attacked the State of Wei on a large scale repeatedly and occupied large areas of land, for the State of Wei was too weak to defend itself.In 273 B.B., the qin army launched another attack upon the State of Wei with a momentum more vigorous than ever.The king of the State of Wei summoned his officials,and asked with a worried look if anyone could propose a way to defeat the Qin army.After years of chaos caused by the wars,the officials trembled when fighting was mentioned, and no one dared to speak ofresistance.At the critical moment when a large enemy force was bearing down upon the border, most of the offinials persuaded the king to sue for peace, at the cost of giving away to the State of Qin the large area of land north of the Huanghe River and south of the Taihang Mountain.However Su Dai, a counsellor, did not agree.He hurried up to the king and said:“Your Majesty, they don't think about the interests of the country at all.It is just because they are cowardly and afraid of death that they ask you to sue for peace by betraying the country.Of course you can temperarily satisfy the ambition of the king of the State of Qin is insatiably greedy.It will never stop assaulting us until our land is totally given away.”Once there was a man whose house was on fire.People told him to put out the fire with water, but he would not listen.Instead, he carried a faggot to put out the fire, only to make the fire fiercer.That was because he didn't know that,instead of putting out the fire, faggots could only make it burning more vigorously.Isn't it equivalent to carrying faggots to put out a fire if you agree to sue for peace at the cost of the land of the State of Wei?“Though Su Dai's argument was very convincing, the king accepted the suggestion of those officials and gave away to the State of Qin a large area of the land of the State of Wei.For the king of the State of Wei was cowardly and only cared for peace at the moment.As might be expected,the Qin army assaulted the State of Wei on a large scale in 225 B.C.,surrounding the capital city Daliang and flooding it by digging open the dykes of the Huanghe River.The State of Wei was finally destroyed by the State of Qin.This story appears in the Historical Records Written by Sima Qian.The set phrase”carrying faggots to put out a fire"is used to mean adopting a wrong method to save a situation and ending up by making it worse.
