M1UHome alone Act One Mom and Dad arrive back from vacation a day earlier than expected. The curtains are closed and the living room is dark when Mom and Dad enter.Dad: It’s so nice to be home!

Mom: Yes, I can’t wait to surprise the boys!

Suddenly the door opens and a soccer ball flies through the room.Eric runs in after it, followed by a big dog, walking very slowly.Eric: Mom!

Dad!

You’re back early!(looking around room, sounding

frightened)

But, but … you weren’t supposed to come home until

tomorrow! The dog slowly walks to Mom and Dad.Mom:(bending to touch dog)Eric, he’s so tired and hungry!(looking at table)The money for dog food is gone, but Spot looks like he is starving! What did you do with the cash we left?

Dad: And look at this room—garbage all over the place!Where is your brother?(shouting angrily)Daniel!Daniel:(running into room)Mom, Dad, I can explain …

Dad opens the curtains and light comes into the room. The room is in a mess, with pizza boxes on the floor and dirty dishes in the sink.In the corner, there is a garbage can around which are pieces of garbage and waste paper.Mom and Dad both turn towards Daniel.Dad:(sounding very angry)Listen to me, young man—we left you in charge! We thought you could act like an

adult, but look at the mess!I don’t know why the house

is so dirty...Mom: Daniel, we thought you were an adult, a person who would make good decisions...Dad: How can we trust you any more? We won’t tolerate

such behavior in our house!Daniel:(shouting)Stop shouting at me.I’m still a teenager!

Why is everything always my fault? Daniel runs into his bedroom and shuts the door angrily.Mom and Dad look at each other as lights go out.End of Act One Act Two, Scene One Daniel and Eric’s bedroom.Eric sits on his bed.Daniel has his arms crossed and looks upset.Daniel: They never even gave me a chance to defend myself.I hate them!

Eric: You don’t hate them.I can tell them we had an

emergency. Then they won’t be mad any more.Daniel: No, don’t tell them anything.Anyhow, they didn’t trust

me.They don’t deserve an explanation.Let them think

what they want.Eric: But Daniel, if they knew that Spot was sick and we

used the money to take him to the clinic...Daniel: And that we spent all of yesterday waiting there for him,and that is why we had no time to clean the house...but

no, Eric, why didn’t they ask me what happened instead

of shouting at me? Act Two, Scene Two

Mom: Do you think we were too hard on Daniel? Perhaps

there is a reason why the house is a mess...Dad: Maybe, but now that he has been so rude to us, I feel

like we have to punish him or he won’t respect us.Mom: Oh, why does this have to be so difficult? Mom sighs.End of Act Two

Growing pains Many teenagers feel lonely, as if no one understands them and the changes they are going through.Day by day, everything seems different, yet the same.Life never seems to be going fast enough;yet, in other ways, like a race car, life seems to be rushing too fast and even going out of control.Has anyone else ever felt this way?

These feelings are a common part of adolescence—the time of life between child and adult. And, though it may sometimes be difficult to believe, you are not alone—every adult has gone through adolescence, and your friends are going through it right now along with you.It is common for teenagers to feel lonely and misunderstood. These feelings can be thought of as growing pains—the difficulties that teenagers face as they grow to adults.

As teenagers grow, it is normal for them to become confused with the changing world both inside and outside of them.During adolescence, teenagers go through great physical changes. They grow taller and their voices get deeper, among many other developments.

Along with these physical changes, there come many psychological changes.Boys and girls tend to be different in this regard. Many boys become risk-takers—they want to find their own limits and the limits of the world around them, but may not have the wisdom to make good choices in their behavior. At the same time, girls often want someone –anyone –to talk to, as they try to deal with their strong feelings.

In the social world, as teenagers get older, they struggle to depend on themselves. They may badly want and need their parents’ love, yet feel distant;they may want to be part of the group, yet desire independence.Since teenagers have difficulty balancing these needs, they often question who they are and how they fit in society.

The good news is that these kinds of growing pains do not last.In the end everything turns out OK—the teenager becomes a healthy adult, and this period of change and challenge is traded for the changes and challenges of grown-up life.

(第一封电子邮件)Dying to be thin … Hi Zhou Ling How are you? I haven’t heard from you for weeks. Is everything OK with you? Do you still go to the gym every day? I used to go to the gym three times a week, but I don’t work out any more.I know another way to stay slim.Looking good is important to women, isn’t it? Most young women want a slim figure these days, especially here in Canada.I’m trying to lose weight because I’m so ashamed of my body.Since I’m preparing to act in a new TV show, I’m taking weight-loss pills called Fat-Less, which are quite popular among young women here.I hope to lose at least 10 kilograms.I take two pills a day and don’t need to exercise. The pills really work!I’m becoming slimmer and slimmer.I’ve lost 7 kilograms in the last two months. However, sometimes I don’t feel so energetic. My mother, who you met last year, keeps telling me not to take them because they are dangerous. She says health is the most important thing, and I agree, but then I look so slim at the moment.Write soon!Love

Amy

Dear Zhou Ling Things change so quickly!I’m now in hospital recovering from liver failure.I regret taking those weight-loss pills. They contain a harmful chemical that caused my liver to fail. The pills were going to completely destroy my liver if I continued taking them.My mother insisted on sending me to the hospital, where I received good medical treatment. It was a really painful experience, but I’m feeling better now.I follow my doctor’s advice and exercise for at least half an hour every day(but I seldom go to the gym!), and eat lots of fruit and vegetables.People should look after their bodies. My mother is right: don’t damage your health for a slim and attractive figure. It isn’t worth it.We shouldn’t be ashamed of the way we look, should we? I hope to hear from you soon.Love, Amy

Dear Amy My computer was broken so I couldn’t read your two e-mails until today.I’m so sorry to hear about your problem, but I’m glad you’re feeling better and are recovering. You’re right. We shouldn’t be embarrassed about our weight.I think you look great as you are, and you’re a wonderful person.I know that the pressure to stay slim is a problem, especially for an actress. However, your mother knows best: nothing is more important than health. It’s the same in China—many people, some of whom are not overweight at all, are always going on a diet or taking weight-loss pills, which are often dangerous.I hope they can learn from your story.Love Zhou Ling

Making a booklet on keeping fit The truth is, diet and way of life are often a problem for teenagers. However, the good news is that you can feel better, look better and have more energy if you eat the right food and exercise regularly.Healthy eating along with regular exercise is probably the only way to become fit.Diets are useless in the long term, yet approximately 20% of teenagers say they have tried going on a diet and skipping meals to control their weight. If you eat properly and exercise regularly, you will lose weight, keep fit and feel great. As a teenager, it is important to give your body the energy it needs. If you skip meals, you don’t get enough energy, and then you feel tired. For a healthy diet, you should eat mostly rice, bread, vegetables and fruit. You also need to drink a lot of water—six to eight glasses a day.Water helps keep your system clean.Drinking enough water will improve your skin and give you healthy hair.Exercise is something that can help to make you look good, feel good and be healthy.Experts suggest that teenagers spend at least 30 minutes exercising, five times a week. That is easy to do!Walking and riding your bike count, and so do school sports.Often, teenagers give up sport, saying they have no time left after their studies.长句

Many teenagers are surprised to learn that when you exercise, your body produces some chemicals that make you feel peaceful and relaxed and increase your ability to concentrate when you study. These chemicals can even help you sleep better at night.A good amount of sleep every night is also important for your health. When you sleep, your body prepares you for the day to come.Teenagers need eight to ten hours of sleep each night. As a matter of fact, loss of sleep can make you look tired, and even cause you to gain weight. If you follow the suggestions above, you will look and feel much better in no time at all!

SCHOOL life in the UK Going to a British high school for one year was a very enjoyable and exciting experience for me.I was very happy with the school hours in Britain because school starts around 9 a.m.and ends about 3.30 p.m.This means I could get up an hour later than usual as schools in China begin before 8 a.m.On the first day, all of the new students attended an assembly in the school hall.I sat next to a girl whose name is Diane. We soon became best friends.During the assembly, the headmaster told us about the rules of the school. He also told us that the best way to earn respect was to devote oneself to study and achieve high grades. This sounded like my school in China.I had many teachers in the past year.Mr.Heywood , my class teacher, was very helpful. My favorite teacher was Miss Burke—I loved the lessons that she gave in English Literature. In our class there were 28 students. This is about the average size for British schools. We had to move to different classrooms for different classes. We also had different students in some classes, so it was a struggle for me to remember all the faces and names.I found the homework was not as heavy as what I used to get in my old school, but it was a bit challenging for me at first because all the homework was in English.I felt lucky as all my teachers gave me much encouragement and I enjoyed all my subjects: English, History, English Literature, Computer Science, Maths, Science, PE, Art, Cooking and French. My English improved a lot as I used English every day and spent an hour each day reading English books in the library.I usually went to the Computer Club during the lunch break, so I could send e-mails to my family and friends back home for free.I also had an extra French class on Tuesday evenings.Cooking was really fun as I learned how to buy, prepare and cook food.At the end of term we held a class party and we all had to cook something.I was glad that all my classmates were fond of the cake that I made.Students at that school have to study Maths, English and Science, but can stop studying some subjects if they don’t like them, for example, History and French. They can choose other subjects like Art and Computer Science or Languages such as Spanish and German. In the Art class that I took, I made a small sculpture.Though it didn’t look very beautiful when it was finished, I still liked it very much.I missed Chinese food a lot at lunch.British food is very different.British people like eating dessert at the end of their main meal. After lunch, we usually played on the school field.Sometimes I played football with the boys.Sometimes I just relaxed under a tree or sat on the grass.I was very lucky to experience this different way of life.I look back on my time in the UK with satisfaction, and I really hope to go back and study in Manchester again.

Starting a new school club We have a radio club in our school. It is great because it is run by the students for the school.I am lucky as I am one of the hosts. It was started two years ago.One day, I just began thinking about music for everyone, so I asked the headmaster if music could be played during break times. He approved the idea, and two years later I am in charge of the radio club as the oldest student member. Our club is much more than just music.Every morning we tell our schoolmates about the weather, recent news, and some special messages that the teachers want us to broadcast.During exam time we have a special programme that tells students the things they should do for preparation. At the end of the school year, many students who are graduating use our club to give messages to their close friends and teachers. When parents come to visit the school and talk to the teachers, we often play songs sung by students, and we also give messages to inform the parents of events such as outings and school plays.I shall miss the radio club after graduation, but I know that it will continue without me.(Kate Jones)Our school club ‘Poets of the Next Generation’ is a literary club that was started by our English teacher Mr.Owen.We meet on the last Friday of every month to talk about poems and poets that we like.In the club meetings, we first select poems that we love, and then read them aloud. We also discuss poems in our meetings. When I attended the first meeting, I was required to write a poem and I had to read it to the club.I was a little nervous at first, but everyone was so nice and friendly that I soon stopped worrying.I once read a poem about nature in the school courtyard.I chose an old tree and gathered everyone under it before I read. The club members said it was one of the best compositions they had heard.(Bob Shaw)我们学校有一个广播俱乐部。

U1Reading Body language

Read this story in a school newspaper.Debbie and Simon are college students. They have part-time jobs at a travel agency. They are sitting in the office.Debbie and Simon looked up as a well-dressed lady entered. The lady glanced at them both, then walked over to Debbie.Debbie greeted her cheerfully. The lady said, ‘I want to go by train to…’

Simon sighed and took some papers over to the fax machine.Mr.Young, a senior employee, was standing there.‘What’s up, Simon? You don’t look very happy.’

‘People always prefer Debbie to me.I can’t understand it.’

‘I can. It’s the way you communicate.’

‘How can that be? I don’t even get a chance to speak to them.’

‘Communicating is more than speaking and listening.Your body language is important, too.’

‘Body language?’

‘It’s the way you stand and sit. It’s your gestures and the expression on your face and in your eyes.Your whole appearance communicates things. The way you look at people doesn’t give them a good impression,Simon. You often rest your head on your hand. You look downwards. You never smile. You don’t turn your head or body towards people.Look at Debbie. She’s holding her head up.She looks at people’s eyes. She smiles.Your body language is telling people to go away.Debbie’s body language is making them feel welcome. That’s why they go to her for assistance, and not to you.’

After that, Simon decided to improve his body language. He sat up and smiled at people. This seemed to work.Minutes later, a very beautiful girl entered. She looked at Debbie and then Simon.Without hesitation she went to Simon and gave him a big smile.A few moments later, she left, still smiling.Mr.Young came over at once and remarked, ‘You made a good impression on her.’

‘That was my sister,’ said Simon.‘She wanted to remind me that tomorrow is her birthday.’

U1MR Eye contact Eye contact is a form of communication which can mean different things in different cultures.Read this article about eye contact on a website.Thoughout the history of mankind, people have communicated with body language. In many situations, the way you say something is far more important than what you say.Eye contact is sometimes the key to communication. It can signal friendliness or hostility, interest or boredom, and understanding or confusion. In Western cultures, maintaining eye contact in conversations is necessary. As a matter of fact, a westerner might consider a lack of eye contact as a lack of interest. In Spain, Italy and Greece, where people stand clost together talking to each other, eye contact is more frequent and lasts longer. In many Asian cultures, avoiding eye contact shows respect. It is done when talking with anyone in authority or with anyone older.Habits like this can cause problems when people do not understand them. For instance, an Asian might close his eyes in concentration or look down while listening to a speaker.A Western speaker might think the man is not interested.Eye contact is a subtle thing.Avoiding eye contact might be considered impolite, but staring at others is also considered rude and should be avoided.U2Reading Care for your hair

U4MR New trends in entertainment technology

Read about new trends in entertainment technology from this article in the style section of a newspaper.Have you ever wanted to feel like part of the action while you watched a film? You can, at an Imax Dome Theatre like the one at the Shanghia Science and Technology Museum. The screen at these theatres surrounds the audience. As the sound system has 44 speakers behind the screen, the sound seems very real. Many of the films shown at these theatres are nature films. You can achieve a similar effect in your own sitting room with a home entertainment system.A home entertainment system uses a wide, flat-screen TV.Often, this is suspended on the wall like a picture.Stereo speakers are arranged round the viewers.Digital technology makes both the picture and the sound clear. For music lovers, there is always MP3.Since MP3 players were introduced in 1997, people have taken them everywhere. An MP3 player uses digital technology to record and play music. Most MP3 players are smaller than cigarette lighters. They can record hundreds of hours of music. With an MP3 player, you can listen to high-quality music while you are doing nearly anything. You no longer have to carry CDs or cassettes with you.U5Reading Very vegetarian

For lunch, I think I’ll have the mixed grill — steak, pork chops, chicken and sausages.Does that sound good to you?

Sam:

Sounds horrible!I’m having a salad. No more bits of dead animals for me.I’ve become a vegetarian — a persan who does not eat meat.Sally:

Since when?

Sam:

Since I saw this programme on TV.Sally:

You’re always influenced by these programmes.Last month, you saw a programme on space and so you wanted to become an astronaut. What did you see this time?

Sam:

A programme on the meat industry. You shouldn’t eat meat, you know. The animals you eat had to spend their lives crowded together in tiny spaces. Then they were killed.Sally:

Poor animals!Oh, here’s my mixed grill!

Sam:

Animals kept this way can easily get sick, so they have to be given drugs. These drugs may still be in the meat when you eat it.It may be dangerous.Sally? Are you listening to me?

Sally:

Yes.Please continue.By the way, can you pass the pepper?

Sam:

You did not have to eat that! You ought to eat some salad instead. We should use land to grow food for people instead of cattle. Then there’d be no more hungry people in the world.Sally:

You will never make me lose my appetite for meat.I need meat because it contains vitamins and minerals not found in vegetables.Vegetables can also be dangerous, you know.Lots of people are made ill because of the pesticides the farmers use on them. Some vegetables even…

Sam:

I don’t want to hear this.Let’s change the subject.Sally:

OK.Do you know where I can buy some…

What kind of diet is right for you? Read this short article on diet and health in a leaflet from a hospital to find out. Many people believe that sugar is not healthy for you.Others say that sugar is the best source of energy. Some people eat meat while others are vegetarians.Who is right? What is your opinion?

The importance ofhaving a variety of food in one’s diet is quite clear.Scientists advise a balanced diet.A balanced diet is one with food from each of the five food groups: whole grains or wheat, vegetables, fruit, milk and dairy products, and meat and beans.Scientists warn us that a lack of certain kinds of food is dangerous, especially for children.Children’s bodies cannot grow properly without a balanced diet.On the other hand, having too much of anyhthing, including one’s favourite food, is equally dangerous. They say, for example, people who eat lots of cheeseburgers and milkshakes will increase their risk of heart attacks. Therefore, we cannot decide what to eat without first doing intelligent research.Scientific information about the body’s needs for fats, proteins, minerals and vitamins can help us decide on the right choice and the right amount. It can also help us tell facts from wrong opinions.U6Reading The changing colours of our crops

Read this newspaper article about Sunqiao Modern Agricultural Development of Zone in Shanghai.Recently, agriculture has become more colourful.‘Green agriculture’ means traditional farming that grows plants in soil.‘Blue agriculture’ farms fish or water plants in natural sources of water such as oceans or lakes. The newest of the colours is ‘white agriculture.’ It is practised at Sunqiao Modern Agricultureal Development Zone in Shanghai. With white agriculture, plants are grown in water.Sometimes sand or small stones are used to help hold up the plants. However, soil is not used. The plants are nourished only by a mixture of water and fertilizer.White agriculture is useful for places with poor soil quality since it makes the best use of both water and fertilizer.Sunqiao is both an experimental research facility and a business enterprise. The research involves making green agriculture more profitable and finding farming techniques which do not use man-made chemicals. It also produces seeds which help famers grow better crops. However, the most unusual aspect of Suqiao is their research on white agriculture.Through this new technology, Sunqiao Modern Agricultural Development Zone has proved to be one of the fastest developing areas in China.Seeds and new varieties of plants from Sunqiao have brought economic benefits to more than 16,000 farming families. The farmers that it has helped now have bigger and better harvests.Their lives have been changed forever.People who live in cities used to regard farming as boring and backward. However, the introduction of modern technology has made Sunqiao famous.Every week, about 5,000 people visit Sunqiao. They appear amazed to see the vegetables which Sunqiao grows without using soil.Farming has become exciting and high-tech.This is a place where technology and nature work well together.U6MR Balancing world diets

How are Western and Asian diets different? Look at this article from a magazine about new trends to find out.Today, in Western countries, weight problems, heart disease and many forms of cancer are becoming more common. In Asia, such kinds of health problems are not as common as in Western countries.Asians appear to live longer as well.Their diets might account for these differences.Asian diets generally have less meat and fewer dairy products.Eggs and chicken are eaten only a few times a week.Sweet food is eaten only in moderation. In contrast to Westerners, Asians eat much rice or noodles.Leafy vegetables like cabbage are on themenu of most Asian meals.Fresh fruit is eaten many times a day.Soya products are often used in cooking.Eating such a variety of food helps Asian people stay healthy. The methods of preparing meals are also different.Vegetable oils are commonly used in Asian cooking. In comparison, butter is used more often in Western cooking. However, fast-food restaurants and Western-style eating patterns have become more common in Asia. This leaves fewer differences between Western and Asian diets.Asians whose diets are like westerners experience more disease and weight problems.Fortunately, many Asians who are aware of this development are paying closer attention to their diets than ever before.

Mom: Yes, I can’t wait to surprise the boys!

Suddenly a door opens and a soccer ball flies through the room.Eric runs in after it, followed by a big dog, walking very slowly.Eric: Mom!Dad!You’re back early!(looking around room, sounding frightened)But, but---you weren’t supposed to come home until tomorrow!

The dog slowly walks to Mom and Dad.Mom:(bending to touch dog)Eric, he’s so tired and hungry!(looking at table)The money with which you were to buy dog food is gone, but Spot looks so hungry! What did you do with the money we left?

Dad: And look at the room---garbage all over the place!Where is your brother?(shouting angrily)Daniel!

Daniel:(running into room)Mom, Dad, I can explain---

Dad opens the curtains and light comes into the room. The room is in a mess, with pizza boxes on around which are pieces of garbage and waste paper.Mom and Dad both turn towards Daniel.Dad:(sounding very angry)Listen to me, young man----we left you in charge! We thought you could act like an adult, but look at the mess.I don’t know why the house is so dirty---

Mom: Daniel, we thought you were an adult, a person who would make good decisions…….Dad: How can we trust you any more? We won’t tolerate such behavior in our house!

Daniel:(shouting)Stop shouting at me.I’m still a teenager! Why is everything always my fault?Daniel runs into his bedroom and shuts the door angrily.Mom and Dad look at each other as lights go out.Act two, scene one

Eric: But Daniel, if they knew that Spot was sick and we used the money to take him to the clinic---

Daniel: And that we spent all of yesterday waiting there for him and that is why we had no time to clean the house---but no Eric, why didn’t they ask me what happened instead of shouting at me?Act two, scene two

Mom: Do you think we were too hard on Daniel? Perhaps there’s a reason why the house is a mess…..Dad: Maybe, but now that he has been so rude to us, I feel like we have to punish him or he won’t respect us.Mom: Oh, why does this have to be so difficult?

Mom sighs.End of act two.M1U2 Project---Growing pains

Many teenagers feel lonely, as if no one understands them and the changes they are going

through.Day by day, everything seems different, yet the same.Life never seems to be going fast enough;yet, in other ways, like a race car, life seems to be rushing too fast and even going out of control.Has anyone else ever felt this way?

These feelings are a common part of adolescence—the time of life between child and adult. And, though it may sometimes be difficult to believe, you are not alone—every adult has gone through adolescence, and your friends are going through it right now along with you.It is common for teenagers to feel lonely and misunderstood. These feelings can be thought of as growing pains—the difficulties that teenagers face as they grow to adults. As teenagers grow, it is normal for them to become confused with the changing world both inside and outside of them.During adolescence, teenagers go through great physical changes. They grow taller and their voices get deeper, among many other developments.Along with these physical changes, there come many psychological changes.Boys and girls tend to be different in this regard. Many boys become risk-takers—they want to find their own

limits and the limits of the world around them, but may not have the wisdom to make good choices in their behavior. At the same time, girls often want someone –anyone –to talk todeal with their strong feelings. In the social world, as teenagers get older, they struggle to depend on themselves. They may badly want and need their parents’ love, yet feel distant;they may want to be part of the group, yet

desire independence.Since teenagers have difficulty balancing these needs, they often question who they are and how they fit in society. In the end everything turns out OK—the teenager becomes a healthy adult, and this period of change and challenge is traded for the changes and challenges of grown-up life.

Unit 5 Music THE BAND THAT WASN'T(34页)

Have you ever wanted to be part of a band as a famous singer or musician? Have you ever dreamed of playing in front of thousands of people at a concert, at which everyone is clapping and appreciating your music? Do you sing karaoke and pretend you are a famous singer like Song Zuying or Liu Huan? To be honest, a lot of people attach great importance to becoming rich and famous. But just how do people form a band? Many musicians meet and form a band because they like to write and play their own music. They may start as a group of high-school students, for whom practicing their music in someone's house is the first step to fame.Sometimes they may play to passers-by in the street or subway so that they can earn some extra money for themselves or to pay for their instruments.Later they may give performances in pubs or clubs, for which they are paid in cash.Of course they hope to make records in a studio and sell millions of copies to become millionaires! However, there was one band that started in a different way.It was called the Monkees and began as a TV show. The musicians were to play jokes on each other as well as play music, most of which was based loosely on the Beatles. The TV organizers had planned to find four musicians who could act as well as sing. They put an advertisement in a newspaper looking for rock musicians, but they could only find one who was good enough. They had to use actors for the other three members of the band.As some of these actors could not sing well enough, they had to rely on other musicians to help them.So during the broadcasts they just pretended to sing.Anyhow their performances were humorous enough to be copied by other groups. They were so popular that their fans formed clubs in order to get more familiar with them. Each week on TV, the Monkees would play and sing songs written by other musicians. However, after a year or so in which they became more serious about their work, the Monkees started to play and sing their own songs like a real band. Then they produced their own records and started touring and playing their own music. In the USA they became even more popular than the Beatles and sold even more records. The band broke up about 1970, but happily they reunited in the mid-1980s.They produced a new record in 1996, with which they celebrated their former time as a real band.

FREDDY, THE FROG(1)(38

Freddy the frog dipped his long, thin legs into the water. He felt so tired!

Within a few short weeks he had changed from a small tadpole into the beautiful animal he saw now.He smiled to himself. Then suddenly he heard a fine deep sound that carried far into the darkness of the quiet night.Freddy looked up.Other frogs!I must try and find them, he thought. It is so hard being a grown‐up frog on my own.He began to swim slowly towards the sound.Suddenly he knocked into a large lily pad.On it sat three confident frogs and they were playing instruments.Freddy climbed onto the leaf.“Can I try to sing?” he asked quietly.“Of course,” they said.He opened his mouth wide and began: Help!I need somebody, Help! Not just anybody.Help! You know I need someone, Help!

Now I find ‐I’ve changed my mind.I’ve opened up the doors.(Chorus)Help me if you can, I’m feeling down. And I do appreciate you being round.Help me get my feet back on the ground.FREDDY THE FROG(II)(38页)

Not long after Freddy and the band became famous, they visited Britain on a brief tour.Fans showed their devotion by waiting for hours to get tickets for their concerts.Freddy was now quite confident when he went into a concert hall.He enjoyed singing and all the congratulations afterwards! His most exciting invitation was to perform on a programme called “Top of the Pops.”He had to go to London, wear an expensive suit and give a performance to a TV camera. It felt very strange. But as soon as the programme was over, the telephones which were in the same room started ringing.Everybody was asking when they could see Freddy and his band again. They were truly stars. Then things went wrong.Freddy and his band could not go out anywhere without being followed.Even when they wore sunglasses or beards people recognized them.Fans found them even when they went into the toilet. They tried to hide in the reading rooms of libraries, but it was useless.Someone was always there!Their personal life was regularly discussed by people who did not know them but talked as if they were close friends. At last feeling very upset and sensitive, Freddy and his band to which they were never to return, and went back to the lake.

Do you worry about exams? Of course, everyone does.Do you find it difficult to remember what you study? Well, everybodyremember what you study? Well, everybody has trouble remembering things from time to time.Do you know music can help you remember things better? Scientists have shown that if you listen to classical music and especially Mozart while you are studying, it helps your memory. It is called the “Mozart effect”.It would be useful to know if the “Mozart effect” works with all kinds of music.Certainly scientists have done some experiments to find out. They have tried playing other kinds of music(such as pop music)while students are studying, but it doesn’t work.It seems that the regular rhythms of classical music help develop one's memory. However, this improvement only lasts for a short time.If you want to improve your intelligence, what should you do? Scientists think that learning a musical instrument is helpfullearning a musical instrument is helpful,Especially for improving maths skills. This is because maths and music both use the same part of the brain. So if you want to be good at maths, perhaps you should go to a music class!

The music of Bach(72

Classical music does not have words. It tries to describe feelings with musical instruments. It is called classical music because it was written at a time when there was no pop or rock music. The music was written to a special pattern.Only the cleverest composers could make beautiful music using this pattern. One of these clever composers was Bach.He was not famous during his life, but became very famous after his death. He worked in a small church and had to write new songs to sing every week.So he composed beautiful choral music. He also wrote music for people to listen to as they left the church. Some of his music is very mathematical with different parts that repeat each other in a very peaceful way.All his music was written for God and some of it is very moving. He never became rich but his music has a special place in classical music. He is remembered today for the beauty of his musical patterns. You can listen to one of his pieces of music now.
