生活諮詢專家、《你的降落傘是什麼顏色?》(What Color Is Your Parachute?)一書作者理查德‧博爾斯(Richard N.Bolles)講述如何發現你的技能並找到理想的職業。
多年來,我為來自世界各地的人──窮人、富人、年輕人、老年人、受過教育和沒有受過教育的人──舉辦講座。我發現所有的人──我是指每一個人──都有至少500種技能。問題在於如何界定這些能力。
我們所有的人都有天賦,都有與生俱來的“技能”,就連那些患有嚴重殘疾的人也是如此。只要觀察一下嬰兒學習、消化和使用資訊的過程,就會發現每個孩子擁有的技能令人驚訝!
你應當努力發現自己的技能,加以分析,認識到這些技能是你可以奉獻給世界的天賦。
大體來講人的技能可以分成三類:動詞、名詞和形容詞──這樣分類很有用處。
你擁有的一些技能屬動詞,即你做的事情,例如:治療、縫紉、建造、開車、交流、勸説、啟發、談判、計算、組織、規劃、記憶、研究、綜合等等。這些是可轉用技能(功能性技能),亦可稱為才能、天賦和“天生的技能”。
這些是你的長處,往往是天生的。例如,有些人天生就知道如何談判,但是如果你不知道的話,你在長大後往往能夠學會。因此,該類技能中有一些是“學來的”。通常你不會喪失這些能力。
之所以稱為“可轉用技能”,是因為這些技能可以從一個職業轉移至另一個職業。並且,無論你多麼頻繁地更換工作,它們都可用於新的領域。
你擅長利用該類技能做好與以下三方面相關的工作:人、事情、或數據/資訊/思想。我們中大多數人傾向於選擇從事主要是人、事情或數據的工作。為什麼?因為在這些方面我們能夠使用我們最樂於使用的能力。
另一些技能是名詞,即你所熟悉的主語和賓語。例如:電腦、英語、古董、花、顏色、時尚、微軟(Microsoft Word)、音樂、農場設備、數據、圖像、亞洲、日語、股票市場等等。
這些技能稱為“主題技能”或“知識技能”,是你有所了解並喜歡在工作中使用的專題知識,我們經常把它們稱為“專長”。
你多年來通過師從他人、在校讀書、體驗生活、閱讀書籍或接受輔導學到這些技能。其中有哪些你最願意使用?這是你可以奉獻給世界的第二套技能。
第三類技能是形容詞或副詞,例如:準確、可適應的、有創造性、可靠、靈活、有條理、堅持不懈、守時、負責、自立、得體、有禮貌、善良等。
這些技能是你的“個性特徵”,是你自我管理和約束的方式。這些特徵使你的可轉用技能以某種風格呈現。這些特徵往往是基於個人經歷形成的。
在日常交談中,當我們談及個性特徵時,給人一種虛無飄渺的印象:“我靠得住;我富有創造性;我很守時。”但實際上,個性特徵往往依附於你的可轉用技能,就象形容詞或副詞一樣。
例如,如果你的可轉用技能是“研究”,那麼你的個性特徵則描繪或界定你的研究方式,如有條有理、富有創造性或可靠。
這些風格──這些自我約束的方式──是你可以奉獻給世界的第三類技能。
一個人的獨特之處即在於如何綜合這三類能力。
因此,重要的是,你要弄清楚哪些工作需要你最願意使用的可轉用技能、專長和個性特徵。畢竟,你降臨這個世界是因為這個世界需要你獨特的奉獻
