Secretary-General’s Message on World Telecommunication and Information Society Day
New York, 17 May 201
Information and communication technologies have transformed the global landscape. They power the world economy and have become the great enablers of modern society, helping people communicate across distances and cultural divides, facilitating trade and commerce, and providing access to critical resources such as healthcare and education.
Recent events around the world, in particular in North Africa and the Middle East, have also highlighted the catalytic role that mobile phones and social media can play in galvanizing public opinion against repression. And in the aftermath of natural disasters that have struck with greater frequency and force, we have seen how these technologies are a vital part of the aid response, establishing lines of communication that can save lives, reunite families and help emergency relief reach people in need.
The theme of this year’s observance, “Better life in rural communities with ICTs”, highlights the need to harness the full potential of ICTs for the benefit of the world's rural population.Seventy per cent of the developing world's 1.4 billion extremely poor people live in rural areas.Their lives can be transformed as we connect village schools to information and knowledge on the Internet, bring telemedicine to far-flung rural health centres, provide accurate weather information to farmers and fishermen, and supply up-to-date market information to producers.
The International Telecommunication Union and its partners continue striving to connect the world.I welcome these efforts, especially the drive to bring broadband to every community.Broadband telecommunications will make it possible to drive content to the remotest rural districts.
As we bridge the digital divide, we narrow the chasm that separates those with and without access to information and knowledge, thereby broadening opportunities for a better life.Greater access means earlier achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. It means less poverty and hunger, and more environmental sustainability. And it translates into greater equality and empowerment for women and the underprivileged.
On this World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, let us resolve to connect rural communities and the entire world to the digital revolution as a means of achieving our development goals and fostering peace and prosperity for all.

UN Secretary-General's Message on the International Day of Non-Violence New York, 2 October 2010
The International Day of Non-Violence marks the birth date of one of the doctrine's leading voices, Mahatma Gandhi.“Non-violence”, Gandhi said, “is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind.”
We at the United Nations strive to harness the power of non-violence to overcome prejudice, end conflict, and cultivate mutual respect and understanding among peoples and countries.Indeed, the creed of non-violence echoes through the United Nations Charter: “To practice tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbours”;“to ensure...that armed force shall not be used, save in the common interest.”
We work every day to bring these lofty principles to life.We do this by promoting human rights, seeking to resolve conflicts through peaceful means, campaigning to eliminate violence against women, working to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, and building bridges across cultures and countering hatred and extremism everywhere.
This work cannot be left to governments or international organizations alone.Peace may be achieved around the negotiating table, but it is sustained around community tables.Peace starts with people--it flows from the hearts of committed women and men.Communities, families, and individuals all have a critical role to play in defeating violence and creating a culture of peace.
On this International Day of Non-Violence, let us work together to use the great force of non-violence to build peaceful and just societies for ourselves and for our children.

UN Secretary-General’s Message on International Widows’ Day June, 2011
This first International Widows’ Day is an occasion to call attention to the many “firsts” that women must face when their husbands die.In addition to coping with grief, they may find themselves for the first time since marriage without any social safety net.Far too often, widows lack access to inheritance, land tenure, employment and even the means to survive.
In places where a widow’s status is linked to her husband, she may find herself suddenly shunned and isolated.Marriage – whether she desires it or not – may be the only way for a widow to regain her footing in society.
Of the approximately 245 million widows in our world, more than 115 live in extreme poverty. In countries embroiled in conflicts, women are often widowed young and must bear the heavy burden of caring for their children amid fighting and displacement with no help or support.
Some of these widows are teenagers – or even younger. The death of their husbands can leave a terrible legacy these widows must endure throughout their remaining years.
All widows should be protected by the rights enshrined in the Convention on theElimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and other international human rights treaties.《消除对妇女一切形式歧视公约》和其他国际人权条约庄严载有各项权利,应可保护所有寡妇。
But in reality, interpretations of customary codes, as well as traditional mourning and burial rites, often deny widows virtually all of their universally recognized rights.
Despite the many difficulties widows face, many make valuable contributions to their countries and communities. Some take on leadership roles at the highest levels.Others work in their families, taking in orphans, serving as caregivers and reaching across lines of conflict to mend tears in the social fabric.
We must recognize the important contribution of widows, and we must ensure that they enjoy the rights and social protections they deserve.
Death is inevitable, but we can reduce the suffering that widows endure by raising their status and helping them in their hour of need. This will contribute to promoting the full and equal participation of all women in society. And that will bring us closer to ending poverty and promoting peace around the world.

Secretary-General Message on World Telecommunication and Information Society Day New York, 17 May 2010
In today's world, telecommunications are more than just a basic service – they are a means to promote development, improve society and save lives. This will be all the more true in the world of tomorrow.
The importance of telecommunications was on display in the wake of the earthquake which devastated Haiti earlier this year.Communications technologies were used to coordinate aid, optimize resources and provide desperately sought information about the victims. The International Telecommunications Union(ITU)and its commercial partners contributed scores of satellite terminals and helped to provide wireless communications to help disaster relief and clean-up efforts.
I welcome those efforts and, more broadly, the work of ITU and others to promote broadband access in rural and remote areas around the world.
Greater access can mean faster progress toward the Millennium Development Goals(MDGs).The Internet drives trade, commerce and even education.Telemedicine is improving health care.Earth monitoring satellites are being used to address climate change. And green technologies are promoting cleaner cities.
As these innovations grow in importance, so, too, does the need to bridge the digital divide.
The theme of this year's observance, “Better Cities, Better Life with ICTs,” is a reminder that communications technologies must be employed – and disposed of – in a manner that raises living standards while protecting the environment.
The United Nations is committed to ensuring that people everywhere have equitable access to information and communication technologies. On this International Day, let us resolve to fully harness the great potential of the digital revolution in the service of life-saving relief operations, sustainable development and lasting peace.
