This essay is on how to fend off invalidism: Invalidism can be avoided by getting medical treatment, and acting like an invalid so as to mobilize more fully the innate healing system of human body.Purpose of writing:
to persuade the reader to believe the mind can serve as a potential healer in the case of an illness.Organization and Development:
Part I.(Para.1)Introduction: the description of what invalidism is by using a series of paralleled clauses.PartⅡ(Para.2-4)reflecting on the way the human body works---the self-recovery support system in the human body plays a more important role than medical curing system.Para.2—put forward two questions:
①how to avoid feeling being an invalid.②how to go through the rest of life
Para.3—By reflecting on the way the human body works can answer the two questions.Para.4—Conclusion: the human body moves in the direction it is expected to move.Part Ⅲ(Para.5-14)—the author’s own experience as an invalid to show how to fend off invalidism and live a meaningful life.Comprehension questions:
1)Try to sum up the first sentence of the text, using a few words:---impotent, dismayed, dejected沮丧的, 灰心的, depressed
2)What contrast does the word “but” in line 20 indicate?
---The contrast between the irreversibility of some illness on the one hand and the healing power of modern medicine along with a positive mental outlook on the other.3)How do you understand “respect for the human body” in para.4?
---Full recognition of its capacity to repair itself in the case of being damaged in any sense and full display of such capability.4)Why does the author say at the end of para 7 “The title of ….”?
---The title of the book sums up what he has been saying: the mental state of a patient may play the role of a healer or that of a killer.5)How do you interpret the distinction Cousins makes at the end ofpara.8(the last sentence)?
---A person may physically be invalid, but he does not have to feel or act like one.6)What do you think of the author’s outlook on life?
---Human beings are all mortal. What is important is not how long a person can live, but how to live an active life while one is alive.7)What can you learn from the author’s schedule since his last heart attack?
---He is acting out his own ideas: though an invalid in the true sense of the world, he is not feeling or acting like one(invalid);this helps him to heal and also makes his life more meaningful.Difficult sentences for paraphrasing:
1)The mechanisms of repair and rehabilitation that are built into the human system have a natural drive to assert themselves under conditions of illness, but that natural tendency is deferred or deflected by an erosion of the will to live, or by the absence of confidence in one’s physician or in one’s own ability to play a vital part in the attack on disease.(l.14-18)
---Self-recovery and self-restoration will automatically function within the human body when one falls ill, but this function is disturbed or even interrupted when one loses one’s confidence in life.Or when one believes that one’s doctor can help little to cure one’s disease, or that one is almost powerless in face of an illness.2)Obviously, it is absurd to suppose that there is no illness or somber circumstance that can’t be reversed.(l.19-20)
---It is certainly illogical to assume that all disease and difficulties can eventually be cured and resolved.3)Just in the act of mobilizing their emotional resources they help to potentiate themselves physically.(l.45-47)
---In the very process of trying to build up their confidence, they are already on the way to the restoration of their health condition.4)I have no intention of swathing myself in cotton to soften a possibly fatal episode.(L54).---I will not be overly过度地, 极度地precautious in order to protect myself from a possibly fatal disease.5)I try to run my own schedule instead of letting the schedule run me(l.92-93)
---I try to do what I plan to do;I shall not let others make plans for me.Difficult sentences for translation:
1)(P.10)Death is not the enemy;living in constant fear is.2)I have no intention of swathing myself in cotton to soften a possibly fatal episode.3)I will continue to live and think as actively and creatively as it is physically possible for me to do, knowing that longevity by self can be sterile but that vital feelings and thoughts give meaning and depth to life and provide a true sense of possibilities of human existence.4)(P.11)I have already lived more than an average lifetime, but I want to continue to live long enough to see the establishment of a world under law and a planet made safe and fit for human habitation.5)(P.12)That number is now on the decline and will, I believe, decline further still with the full recognition, not just by the profession but by the general public, that a comprehensive program of treatment involves both the full utilization of medical science and full development of the human healing system.Post-reading activities:
What do you think of the author’s outlook on life? What revelation does he make for you? Write a passage about your ideas.Book7Unit11Beyond Invalidism
1.A weak body becomes weaker in a mood of total surrender.
2.The original treadmill results that produced the finding of severe coronary insufficiency have been reversed.

1、And secondly, because I had a lump in my throat and a lot of sad thoughts on my mind that had little to do with anything a Nippon railways official might say.
2、The very act of stepping on this soil, in breathing this air of Hiroshima, was for me a far greater adventure than any trip or any reportorial assignment I'd previously taken. Was I not at the scene of the crime?
3、The tall buildings of the martyred city flashed by as we lurched from side to side in response to the driver's sharp twists of the wheel.
4、Quite unexpectedly, the strange emotion which had overwhelmed me at the station returned, and I was again crushed by the thought that I now stood on the site of the first atomic bombardment, where thousands upon thousands of people had been slainin one second, where thousands upon thousands of others had lingered on to die in slow agony.
5、Seldom has a city gained such world renown, and I am proud and happy to welcome you to Hiroshima, a town known throughout the world for its---oysters“.
6、There are two different schools of thought in this city of oysters, one that would like to preserve traces of the bomb, and the other that would like to get rid of everything, even the monument that was erected at the point of impact.
7、”If you write about this city, do not forget to say that it is the gayest city in Japan, even if many of the town's people still bear hidden wounds, and burns.“ “假如您要描写这座城市的话,千万别忘记告诉人们这是日本最快乐的城市,尽管这里的市民许多人身上还带着暗伤和明显的灼伤。”
8、But later my hair began to fall out, and my belly turned to water.
1、The fundamentalists adhered to a literal interpretation of the Old Testament. The modernists, on the other hand, accepted the theory advanced by Charles Darwin--that all animal life, including monkeys and men, had evolved from a common ancestor.
2、During one such argument, Rappelyea said that nobody could teach biology without teaching evolution.
3、People from the surrounding hills, mostly fundamentalists, arrived to cheer Bryan against the ” infidel outsiders“
4、He is here because ignorance and bigotryare , and it is a mighty strong combination.” “
5、“The Bible,” he thundered in his sonorous organ tones, “ is not going to be driven out of this court by experts who come hundreds of miles to testify that they can reconcile evolution, with its ancestors in the jungle, with man made by God in His image and put here for His purpose as par t of a divine plan.”
6、The truth does not need Mr.Bryan.The truth is eternal, immortal and needs no human agency to support it!“ “真理从来都是胜利者——我们并不害怕这一点。
7、But although Malone had won the oratorical duel with Bryan, the judge ruled against permitting the scientists to testify for the defence.
8、“ I am examining you on your tool ideas that no intelligent Christian on earth believes.”
9、Dudley Field Malone called my conviction a “victorious defeat.”
10、The oratorial storm that Clarence Darrow and Dudley Field Malone blew up in the little court in Dayton swept like a fresh wind through the schools and legislative offices of the United States, bringing in its wake a new climate of intellectual and academic freedom that has grown with the passing years.
1、The rocks looked more like an ancient ruin than the building blocks of a new school.
2、The previous winter ,before leaving Korphe, Mortenson had driven tent pegs into the frozen soil and tied red and blue braised nylon cord to them, marking out a floor plan of five rooms he imagined for the school.
3、Korphe’s mosque had adapted to a changing environment over the centuries
4、With Motenson ,he measured out the correct length ,dipped the twine in a mixture of calcium and lime ,then used the village’s time--tested method to mark the dimensions of a construction site.
5、Haji Ali and Twaha pulled the core taut and whipped it against the ground ,leaving white lines on the packed earth where the walls of the foundation facing Korph K2.
6、When the trench was done, Haji Ali nodded toward two large stones that had been carved for this purpose, and six men lifted them, shuffled agonizingly toward the trench, and lowered them into the corner of foundation facing Korphe K2.
7、“It was so big that it was dragging Twaha, who was doing his best just to hold on as the animal led him to its own execution.“公羊太大了,以、以致于即使塔瓦哈用尽最大的力气,也是公羊拽着他往前走,一步步接近公羊的屠宰者。”
8、“watching this scene straight out of the Bible stories I’d learned in Sunday school, I thought how much the different faiths had in common, how you could trace so many of their traditions back to the same root.“目睹这个和我在主日学校学到的《圣经》故事一模一样的场面,我不禁想到不同的信仰之间有着如此多的相似之处,并且,人们可以将其传统追溯到同一个根源。”
9、After the last bone had been beaten and the last strip of marrow sucked dry, Mortenson joined a group of men who built a fire by what would one day soon, he hoped, become the courtyard of a completed school.
10、A thousand feet below, Korphe, green with ripening barely fields, looked small and vulnerable ,a life raft on a sea of stone.
11、“Long after all those rams are dead and eaten this time this school will still stand;“那些公羊很快就会被吃光,但这个学校将会长久地屹立着。”
12、“I realized that everything ,all the difficulties i’d gone through ,from the time I’d promised to build the school, through the long struggle to complete it, was nothing compared to the sacrifices he was prepared to make for his people.”
1、I can observe her without her knowing, and this gives me pleasure, for it is as in a moving picture that I can note the grace of her gestures, whether she raises a glass of wine to her lips or turns with a remark to one of her neighbours or takes a cigarette from her case with those slender fingers.

3、Doubtless some instinct impels me gluttonously to cram these the last weeks of my life with the gentler things I never had time for, releasing some suppressed inclination which in fact was always laten.

6、What I like best are the stern cliffs, with ranges of mountains soaring behind them, full of possibilities, peaks to be scaled only by the most daring
7、So do I let my imagination play over the recesses of Laura's Character, so austere in the foreground but nurturing what treasures of tenderness, like delicate flowers, for the discovery of the venturesome.

9、Laura and I amuse ourselves by watching for the green flash which comes at the instant the sun disappears below the line of the.horizon.
10、In the ship's library stands a large globe whose function so far as I am concerned is to reveal the proportion of ocean to the landmasses of the troubled would;the Pacific alone dwarfs all the continents put together.
11、I have been exhilarated by two days of storm, but above all I love these long purposeless days in which I shed all that I have ever been.

P4 5 The tendency to ignore the Negro's contribution to American life and to strip him of his personhood, is as old as the earliest history hooks and as contemporary as the morning's newspaper. To upset this cultural homicide, the Negro must rise up with an affirmation of his own Olympian manhood.Any movement for the Negro's freedom that overlooks this necessity is only waiting to be buried. As long as the mind is enslaved, the body can never be free.Psychological freedom, a firm sense of self-esteem, is the most powerful weapon against the long night of physical slavery. No Lincolnian Emancipation Proclamation or Johnsonian Civil Rights Bill can totally bring this kind of freedom. The Negro will only be free when he reaches down to the inner depths of his own being and signs with the pen and ink of assertive manhood his own Emancipation Proclamation. And, with a spirit straining toward true self-esteem, the Negro must boldly throw off the manacles of self-abnegation and say to himself and to the world, “I am somebody.I am a person.I am a man with dignity and honor.I have a rich and noble history. How painful and exploited that history has been.Yes, I was a slave through my foreparents and I am not ashamed of that.I'm ashamed of the people who were so sinful to make me a slave.” Yes, we must stand up and say, “I'm black and I'm beautiful,” and this self-affirmation is the black man's need, made compelling by the white man's crimes against him.
P5 8 It was this misinterpretation that caused Nietzsche, who was a philosopher of the will to power, to reject the Christian concept of love.It was this same misinterpretation which induced Christian theologians to reject the Nietzschean philosophy of the will to power in the name of the Christian idea of love. Now, we've got to get this thing right. What is needed is a realization that power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic.Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love. And this is what we must see as we move on.What has happened is that we have had it wrong and confused in our own country, and this has led Negro Americans in the past to seek their goals through power devoid of love and conscience.
P7 19 And so I say to you today that I still stand by nonviolence. And I am still convinced that it is the most potent weapon available to the Negro in his struggle for justice in this country. And the other thing is that I am concerned about a better world.I'm concerned about justice.I'm concerned about brotherhood.I'm concerned about truth. And when one is concerned about these, he can never advocate violence. For through violence you may murder a murderer but you can't murder.Through violence you may murder a liar but you can't establish truth.Through violence you may murder a hater, but you can't murder hate.Darkness cannot put out darkness.Only light can do that.
P55 3 What could be easier than to write articles and to buy Persian cats with;the profits? But wait a moment.Articles have to be about something.Mine, I seem to remember, was about a novel by a famous man.And while I was writing this review, I discovered that if I were going to review books I
should need to do battle with a certain phantom. And the phantom was a woman, and when I came to know her better I called her after the heroine of a famous poem. The Angel in the House. It was she who used to come between me and my paper when I was writing reviews. It was she who bothered me and wasted my time and so tormented me that at last I killed her.You who come of a younger and happier generation may not have heard of her-you may not know what I mean by The Angel in the House.I will describe her as shortly as I can.She was intensely sympathetic. She was immensely charming. She was utterly unselfish. She excelled in the difficult arts of family life. She sacrificed herself daily. If there was chicken, she took the leg;if there was a draught she sat in it-in short she was so consitituted that she never had a mind or a wish of her own, but preferred to sympathize always with the minds and wishes of others.Above all-I need not say it-she was pure. Her purity was supposed to be her chief beauty-her blushes, her great grace. In those days-the last of Queen Victoria-every house had its Angel. And when I came to write I encountered her with the very first words. The shadow of her wings fell on my page;I heard the rustling of her skirts in the room.Directly, that is to say, I took my pen in my hand to review that novel by a famous man, she slipped behind me and whispered: “My dear, you are a young woman. You are writing about a book that has been written by a man.Be sympathetic;be tender;flatter;deceive;use all the arts and wiles of our sex.Never let anybody guess that you have a mind of your own.Above all, be pure.” And she made as if to guide my pen.I now record the one act for which I take some credit to myself, though the credit rightly belongs to some excellent ancestors of mine who left me a certain sum of money-shall we say five hundred pounds a year?-so that it was not necessary for me to depend solely on charm for my living.I turned upon her and caught her by the throat.I did my best to kill her.My excuse if I were to be had up at a court of law, would be that I acted in self-defence.Had I not killed her she would have killed me.She would have plucked the heart out of my writing. For as I found directly I put pen to paper, you cannot review even a novel without having a mind of your own, without expressing what you think to be the truth about human relations, morality, sex.And all these questions, according to the Angel of the House cannot be dealt with freely and openly by women;they must charm, they must conciliate, they must-to put it bluntly-tell lies if they are to succeed. Thus, whenever I felt the shadow of her wing or the radiance of her halo upon my page, I took up the inkpot and flung it at her.She died hard. Her fictitious nature was of great assistance to her.It is far harder to kill a phantom than a reality. She was always creeping back when I thought I had despatched her.Though I flatter myself that I killed her in the end, the struggle was severe;it took much time that had better have been spent upon learning Greek grammar;or in roaming the world in search of adventures. But it was a real experience;it was an experience that was bound to befall all women writers at that time.Killing the Angel in the House was part of the occupation of a woman writer.
