Impressions of the film Gua Sha

Some time ago, I watched a movie called Guasha. It is a movie about the differences between American and Chinese culture. There’re a lot of conflicts in this movie, such as the criteria of abusing children, the using languages between the different generations, the ways of teaching children.Of course, the main one is Chinese traditional values and American ones.It is showed on three characters, Datong, his wife and Grandpa.Datong is the central character that the director chose to express the theme. His words, his actions, his thoughtway, all represent the Chinese traditional values. His wife are very well educated and wants only Engllish spoken in her home.As an old Chinese, Grandpa can accept the American values partly, but not to follow.Undoubtely, Iam feeling a lot from that movie. The most important is the Culture Shock.

2013-3-19 The film review of “scrapping”

This movie is about a story which happened in an immigrant family living in the United States now.Dennis, a Chinese child, is having a fever and suffering from diarrhea.Since his grandfather was from Beijing and didn’t understand the drugs’ English instruction, he used the long history Chinese wisdom therapy scrapping to treat Dennis. But he never predicted that this treatment became the evidence of Dennis’ father abused the child. In the court, a series of conflicts is followed, and the so happy family became fragmented in a few time.We can’t imagine scrapping is just a little thing for Chinese. Why should it become a legal setbacks in the United States.Scrapping has experienced thousands of years’ history. Why became illegal behavior in the US.This question is very valuable for people to think about it.As far as I’m concerned, this problem is due to the cultural differences between Chinese and western country.Western people cannot believe the treatment of Guasha which has a long history in China. The culture differences existed in everywhere.Different country has different cultures. We should realize it ,and accept it sometime. But there is also a more important reason that the court didn’t understand the true things and didn’t verify the illegal evidence.Because the cultural difference itself is an objective factor.Only when cultural differences can’t be accepted this tragedy would happen. As we all know the low is justice, and the court needs the fact.In this film, scrapping hadn’t really be understood, the court deprived the custody of Xu Datong. It’s no doubt that they didn’t understand correctly and verify the illegal evidence, which lead to the contrary to the justice of law.If the court knows the differences between Chinese and foreign cultures, it won’t make such a ridiculous decision.Another bright spot of this film is the father’s love.At the hearing Xu Datong expressed impatience that totally different from his personality as an engineer. He feels anxiety and fear that he is going to lose his child. He spirited away Dennis at the contact of the law.In order not to let Dennis know the truth, he played a game with Dennis and Dennis had a good sleep. In the end, Xu climb nine floors to make his love climax.“Scrapping” is valuable for people to watch. It’s rich in cultural connotations.Of course things have been solved satisfactorily Finally, the prosecution of the court has been revoked. The result of the film in addition to the normal conscience and more is due to the communication and understanding of each other.I think the hero’s name is “Da Tong”.Its true meaning is the communication and understanding of other culture. Gua Sha is a movie about the differences between American and Chinese culture.Xu datong is a video games designer in St.Louis.When his father visits from China, he performs Gua Sha(a Chinese traditional treatment)on his grandson, which leaves bright red marks on the skin and causes a lawsuit of child abuse. In the court, Datong loses his mind so that finally he loses custody of his son.I think this scene is shocking and thought-provoking to most of the Chinese audiences. But the most impressing scene to me is the ending.Datong wants to see his son in Christmas eve, he has to climb a pipe to the ninth floor which his son lives.I think the pipe is not only a pipe, but also a gap, a deep gap between American and 5000-year Chinese culture. He wants to climb over the gap and he will never succeed, perhaps no Chinese people really could succeed.

I have never imagined that I would write a film review in English.Because when referring to feeling and culture, I can hardly express my whole idea in Chinese, let alone in English.Well, just have a try.The Gua Sha Treatment is designed to discuss the culture differences. We can know that from Datong, the name of the leading man.Datong is a classical Chinese term.It refers to a utopian vision of the world in which everyone and everything is at peace. While life always plays jokes on people, Datong’s peaceful life didn’t last long.He was accused of abusing his son because of the bruises from Gua Sha.Actually, Datong was not the person who gave the little boy Gua Sha treatment. It’s his father. But Datong decided to be a scapegoat. This was a culture difference. In Chinese traditional culture, law is not important than affection.Though we also praise those people who put righteousness above family loyalty, nobody wants that happen to themselves.Chinese think that being a scapegoat for family members especially for father or mother is a responsibility. The biggest culture difference the film showed us was that Chinese culture was based on experience while western based on specific evidences.Gua Sha has been used as a treatment for thousands years, and many people advocate it for their own experience.Just like many Ancient Chinese technique, we just know it is useful but we can’t explain it clearly. So to persuade westerner to believe it seems impossible. Then cultures conflict happens. But we can’t directly blame westerner in this case. Not only Gua Sha, but also laugh therapy and so on are not accepted by westerner as normal treatments. It’s a responsible attitude for life.Because we know little about these treatments, we cannot make sure what is going to happen. And how we should deal with it? Ancient Chinese have given us the answer: While in Rome, do as Rome dose. But we should not abandon our own culture, just like Gua Sha, a treatment that helps blood circulate better. So keep on Gua Sha and communication.May be someday there will be a Datong World.

(一)Gua Sha is a movie about the differences between American and Chinese culture.Xu datong is a video games designer in St.Louis.When his father visits from China, he performs Gua Sha(a Chinese traditional treatment)on his grandson, which leaves bright red marks on the skin and causes a lawsuit of child abuse. It’s about assimilation into American culture, and not assimilation in an ”International” city, like SF or NY or LA or Chicago, but St.Louis, MO(actually shot there)。Really great acting, interesting story.Gua Sha is a treatment in traditional oriental medicine in which a wooden board repeatedly slides across the patient’s acupuncture acupressure massage points. It works in similar principles like that of acupuncture acupressure massage. This method would inevitably leave bruise on the skin, and the story begins here, when the visiting grandpa who does not speak any English used this traditional practice to treat the grandson when both son and daughter-in-law were at work.Sadly, in US, this is a story that repeats itself many times in the area where many oriental immigrants lives and all of these are due to simple misunderstanding between cultures.Gua Sha: Step-by-Step, by Arya Nielsen. If an acupuncturist is trained in Classical Chinese medicine, they will do this technique in their practice for pain, and for acute or chronic illness.

(二)Chinese immigrants struggle to hold onto their American dream after the husband's father(Xu Zhu)comes for a visit from mainland China and gives a si-mp-le Chinese Medicine therapy called Gua Sha to his grandson.Da Tong(Tony Leung Ka Fai)is the father who is trying to integrate his Chinese cultural beliefs into his daily American reality, especially when dealing with his bo(Hollis Huston)and best friend, who is too quick to believe the worst about Da Tong's treatment of his son, Dennis.Da Tong's failures show his confusion about the differences between his original Chinese culture and his new American home.Even within his family there is conflict because Grandfather can't speak English and is excluded from many conversations because Mother(Wenli Jiang)wants only English spoken in her home for the benefit of her American born son.Da Tong and his wife are very well educated and understand that their child's best chances for succein America, and for him not to experience the same troubles they've had during the past 8 years, are to speak without an accent. They even go so far as to insist the boy use a fork and knife instead of chopsticks, even when it's obvious they are still eating Chinese style food, served in the normal way: communal dishes for the food and smaller, individual rice bowls for each person.Mother seems a bit inflexible in her insistence on being as American as possible, while Da Tong's cultural leanings are just as strongly Chinese, although not by conscious choice.Da Tong's love for his son is tested severely when Da Tong tries to balance it against respect for his boss. When Da Tong's son hits his boss' son, Da Tong insists on an apology that seems unnecessary and makes Da Tong look stubborn and uncaring.Da Tong gives his boy a light rap on the head when he refuses to apologize and the boy cries to his mother that the reason he hit his playmate was that the other boy called Da Tong stupid, one of many examples of doing the wrong thing to protect your family. The conflict arising from doing the wrong thing out of love or respect for one's family or closest friends continues throughout the movie, and every way Da Tong turns, he finds failure and encounters both obvious and subtle forms of anti-Chinese racism.Even Chinese folklore about the Monkey King, Sun Wu Kong, that Da Tong incorporates into a video game he designed is used to provoke his pride when he's vulnerable and fearing for the loof his son.Da Tong is misunderstood by everyone, family, friend, and foe, even though he has only the best intentions, and he carries the responsibility quite heavily, ma-ki-ng one wrong turn after another.Gua Sha(The Treatment)shows how a person's cultural beliefs are so deeply set within oneself that it is usually impossible to examine why you do most anything, from how you dreand talk to whom you love and respect and how you show it.The invisible nature of one's cultural beliefs also makes it difficult to impossible to explain yourself to others when questioned.Da Tong experiences an excruciatingly painful and difficult struggle while trying to protect his son, an ordeal that forces him to examine the validity of some of the most vital things he thought he knew about his identity, his Chinese culture, and the new American world he'd chosen as his home. The movie showed me how normal it is for people to look for ways that their culture is superior to others' and how the misunderstandings arising from different cultural perspectives can seem very large, but can be nullified with si-mp-le, 2-sided explanations when people are willing to listen. It appears this film is not readily available in the USA, but it's the best I've seen at highlighting the differences between American and Chinese culture.Parts of the movie's dialog are only in Chinese and I've yet to find a DVD with English subtitles, although it's easy to get the gist of what's going on during those short passages. The credits are a combination of Chinese and English, holding true to the integration of both worlds.I've noticed some important roles are not credited here on IMDb, such as Judge Horowitz, who was played by Alexander Barton.

111 3110311001Culture Differences

The film “gua sha”tells the story the life of an immigrant American family that came from Beijing: the 5-year-old Chinese child Dennis stomachaches and had a fever, so his grandfather use Chinese traditional way-gua sha-to treat him. However, Datong couple was accused of child abuse and then, one after another evidence of witnesses had made the couple in a trouble, because Western medicine can not simply understand this traditional Chinese therapies. In court, a series of debates came, a happy family shortly became so fragmented. All this reaction came from the large level of globalization ,which is cultural differences.Gua sha is a Chinese traditional treatment methods spread over two thousand years, of course, there will be some congestion in the body traces, but the body is good.In the film, Ta Tung said: “I love America! Here is my home!” Eight years of American life has made him confident that he was American. But no matter how he said, how fluent English he said, how American life he loves, his bones are rooted in traditional Chinese culture. For example, Dennis and a friend's son fight, he would give his son punishment in public, and he says“playing the curse of love is pain”.All this is known as “Democracy, rule of law, science,” which are the American political and the law can not understand.Contempt for his country's culture is actually the concept of an individual's culture and values in this kind of contempt.I had forgotten who said these words.Americans and Chinese people educate their children in a different way.The United States in this way, not to say desirable, but at least you can listen to the child's views and opinions.Although there is no independent civilian child ability, but he is conscious and has some ability to distinguish an independent entity.Even if they will not all believe the child, the child’s words can also be part of his reaction to judge his true condition. At this point, the movie did not reflect. The U.S.attorney hired by the prosecution in court described the “Journey to the West” in the Monkey: Ta Tung immigrant to the U.S.to prove violent: “They planted nine years of peaches, he did not say hello to fight with the owner they pick to eat, when people stop him, he does not only did not listen to discourage, but also fight and ruined people's Taoyuan. No Chinese people would stand such stupid words towards Chinese traditional culture!

Sino-us differences in performance of the film, but also expressed cultural assimilation, cultural fusion of a kind of yearning.Abram passed from Queensland Chinatown porcelain store, personal try ”gua sha“;From xu Datong get rid of shows, downstairs police, residents erupted with applause, from he climbed the ninth floor of the house, the house and the children of alarm welfare leadership congratulated him holy happiness, welcome home, audiences seem to see the westerners preached the Chinese and western cultural barriers, began to approach of traditional Chinese culture, and eventually conquered all human feelings. The end of the story is perfect, but also must not ignore the cultural difference side, which requires us to strengthen exchanges and communication, hope in the near future, a ”Datong" world really will appear in front of us!

Every man for himself , and God for us all.Every man isthe architect of his own fortune.
