第一篇:刮痧英文观后感

“Scrape” is indeed a good film for us to see. When I was seeing the film, I was touched by its wonderful plot. The film narrates that the main character named Xu Datong came to America 8 years ago and he realized his American Dream. He has a successful career and a happy family, everything is going well. But one day, he was told that his son was maltreated by himself. The truth is that his son Denis has a fever and a stomachache, but his grandfather can’t understand the English instructions on the medicine bottle. Therefore, he uses the traditional Chinese medicine therapy “Guasha” to cure his grandson, which becomes the evidence of the father’s abuse to his son.And the traditional Chinese therapy “Guasha” seems to be the tool that is used to maltreat children in the eyes of foreigners. In China, scrape is a very normal thing for people to accept, and why it becomes so complicated and difficult for foreigners to acknowledge the traditional Chinese therapy.Facing with the new explanation of traditional Chinese culture and moral standard by prosecution lawyer, Xu Datong loses his mind and is hard to calm down. The judge announces to exploit his right of guardianship over his son.And he is not allowed to meet his son and he is very angry at the time of the scene. When the defense lawyer of the opposite talks about the role named “Monkey King”, we can see that many foreigners are unfamiliar with the Chinese culture.Analyzing from the aspect of Chinese and Western’s thoughts, the

western countries are controlling the world with their strong economic and military strength, and they try to centralize unify the western model of the civilized world. Therefore, they start to smear and debase other civilization pattern. The western society is never research extensive and profound Chinese culture seriously and they don’t know more about the Chinese culture. As a result, foreigners are unable to understand “Guasha” in the movie. As we all know, thoughts of western people are more open than us, but they can’t accept the thing without any scientific proof. In the aspect of education, when the Chinese parents deal with the fight between two children, they will educate their own child firstly, while the western parents will respect the truth. So Xu Datong’s action to educate his son is seen as violence even abuse. The traditional Chinese notion is that parents give birth to their child and they have the right to educate them well, other people are with no right to interfere. However, parents are just legal guardian to their children in America, and they have no right to scold their kids and to say nothing of fight their children. Therefore, the Chinese notion of education is rather different from the western notion of education,Legally, America is a legal system country, law exists in the every corner and every dispute can be solved by the way of law. They emphasize on the truth and evidence. Finally, Xu Datong was announced

to leave his son, according to law, the court’s adjudication is right. But many Chinese people are unable to accept it, which we can see the difference between China and America. We have to acknowledge that American people emphasize personal rights;they use law and social institutions to limit people’s action, especially to the protection of juveniles. They think everyone is equal and has their own rights. We can learn something good from American law.In conclusion, cross-cultural communication may have some conflicts. In order to reach the agreement, we should learn to respect other different cultural customs in the process of cultural communicating. We need to have tolerant attitude, and eliminate national prejudice and adhere to the principle of equal culture.

Consideration about Gua Sha

The movie Gua Sha(The Treatment)is typical for showing explicitly the differences of culture and the way of thinking between countries as well as modern and tradition. It tells the story about Xu Datong, a video games designer in St.Louis.When his father visits from China, he performs Gua Sha(a Chinese traditional treatment)on his grandson, which leaves bright red marks on the skin and causes a lawsuit of child abuse. In the court, Datong loses his mind so that finally he loses custody of his son.Gua Sha is a treatment in traditional oriental medicine in which a wooden board repeatedly slides across the patient's acupuncture acupressure massage points. It works in similar principles like that of acupuncture acupressure massage. This method would inevitably leave bruise on the skin.Actually, the treatment of Gua Sha means to get rid of blocks and obstacles in the body and to make one healthy and sound. In the movie, it also means to break the differences of culture and the way to thinking between China and the United States.Apart from the culture distinctions, the way of thinking is also different between the two countries. The U.S.always pays more attention to logical thinking and the respect for an individual person, even if it’s just a kid and they always seem cold and indifferent to us Chinese. While in China, we value much the collectivism, which means we cherish and care our parents, our children, our families as well as others and even strangers. In the movie, there are cultural conflicts and cultural convergence going together.Datong is a name which means the same and harmony, and Datong is the father who is trying to integrate his Chinese cultural beliefs into his daily American reality. The conversations of this film are also a combination of Chinese and English, just like the world, a combination of Chinese culture and American culture, holding true things to the integration of both worlds. The movie also shows the eternal theme of love. The love between parents and children, couples, friends, and even strangers which we can see clearly from the last part of the movie when Datong succeeded in climbing to his home on the ninth floor, people who are watching as well as the policemen all applause and congratulate him. This is love which is eternal in the universal even if there are differences. What impresses me the most is the last scene, when on Christmas day,Datong, who misses his son so much, pretends to be Santa Claus climbing along the water pipe to his house on the ninth floor.I’m almost in tears when I see their family holding together no matter what obstacles they are facing. In the end, Chinese culture, like Gua Sha, can also be approved by the west gradually, which means the integration of different cultures and also means a world of Datong, a world of harmony.

2013-3-19 The film review of “scrapping”

This movie is about a story which happened in an immigrant family living in the United States now.Dennis, a Chinese child, is having a fever and suffering from diarrhea.Since his grandfather was from Beijing and didn’t understand the drugs’ English instruction, he used the long history Chinese wisdom therapy scrapping to treat Dennis. But he never predicted that this treatment became the evidence of Dennis’ father abused the child. In the court, a series of conflicts is followed, and the so happy family became fragmented in a few time.We can’t imagine scrapping is just a little thing for Chinese. Why should it become a legal setbacks in the United States.Scrapping has experienced thousands of years’ history. Why became illegal behavior in the US.This question is very valuable for people to think about it.As far as I’m concerned, this problem is due to the cultural differences between Chinese and western country.Western people cannot believe the treatment of Guasha which has a long history in China. The culture differences existed in everywhere.Different country has different cultures. We should realize it ,and accept it sometime. But there is also a more important reason that the court didn’t understand the true things and didn’t verify the illegal evidence.Because the cultural difference itself is an objective factor.Only when cultural differences can’t be accepted this tragedy would happen. As we all know the low is justice, and the court needs the fact.In this film, scrapping hadn’t really be understood, the court deprived the custody of Xu Datong. It’s no doubt that they didn’t understand correctly and verify the illegal evidence, which lead to the contrary to the justice of law.If the court knows the differences between Chinese and foreign cultures, it won’t make such a ridiculous decision.Another bright spot of this film is the father’s love.At the hearing Xu Datong expressed impatience that totally different from his personality as an engineer. He feels anxiety and fear that he is going to lose his child. He spirited away Dennis at the contact of the law.In order not to let Dennis know the truth, he played a game with Dennis and Dennis had a good sleep. In the end, Xu climb nine floors to make his love climax.“Scrapping” is valuable for people to watch. It’s rich in cultural connotations.Of course things have been solved satisfactorily Finally, the prosecution of the court has been revoked. The result of the film in addition to the normal conscience and more is due to the communication and understanding of each other.I think the hero’s name is “Da Tong”.Its true meaning is the communication and understanding of other culture.观后感一 Gua Sha is a movie about the differences between American and Chinese culture.Xu datong is a video games designer in St.Louis.When his father visits from China, he performs Gua Sha(a Chinese traditional treatment)on his grandson, which leaves bright red marks on the skin and causes a lawsuit of child abuse. In the court, Datong loses his mind so that finally he loses custody of his son.I think this scene is shocking and thought-provoking to most of the Chinese audiences. But the most impressing scene to me is the ending.Datong wants to see his son in Christmas eve, he has to climb a pipe to the ninth floor which his son lives.I think the pipe is not only a pipe, but also a gap, a deep gap between American and 5000-year Chinese culture. He wants to climb over the gap and he will never succeed, perhaps no Chinese people really could succeed.

I have never imagined that I would write a film review in English.Because when referring to feeling and culture, I can hardly express my whole idea in Chinese, let alone in English.Well, just have a try.The Gua Sha Treatment is designed to discuss the culture differences. We can know that from Datong, the name of the leading man.Datong is a classical Chinese term.It refers to a utopian vision of the world in which everyone and everything is at peace. While life always plays jokes on people, Datong’s peaceful life didn’t last long.He was accused of abusing his son because of the bruises from Gua Sha.Actually, Datong was not the person who gave the little boy Gua Sha treatment. It’s his father. But Datong decided to be a scapegoat. This was a culture difference. In Chinese traditional culture, law is not important than affection.Though we also praise those people who put righteousness above family loyalty, nobody wants that happen to themselves.Chinese think that being a scapegoat for family members especially for father or mother is a responsibility. The biggest culture difference the film showed us was that Chinese culture was based on experience while western based on specific evidences.Gua Sha has been used as a treatment for thousands years, and many people advocate it for their own experience.Just like many Ancient Chinese technique, we just know it is useful but we can’t explain it clearly. So to persuade westerner to believe it seems impossible. Then cultures conflict happens. But we can’t directly blame westerner in this case. Not only Gua Sha, but also laugh therapy and so on are not accepted by westerner as normal treatments. It’s a responsible attitude for life.Because we know little about these treatments, we cannot make sure what is going to happen. And how we should deal with it? Ancient Chinese have given us the answer: While in Rome, do as Rome dose. But we should not abandon our own culture, just like Gua Sha, a treatment that helps blood circulate better. So keep on Gua Sha and communication.May be someday there will be a Datong World.

电影刮痧英文>观后感

(一)Gua Sha is a movie about the differences between American and Chinese culture.Xu datong is a video games designer in St.Louis.When his father visits from China, he performs Gua Sha(a Chinese traditional treatment)on his grandson, which leaves bright red marks on the skin and causes a lawsuit of child abuse. It’s about assimilation into American culture, and not assimilation in an ”International” city, like SF or NY or LA or Chicago, but St.Louis, MO(actually shot there)。Really great acting, interesting story.Gua Sha is a treatment in traditional oriental medicine in which a wooden board repeatedly slides across the patient’s acupuncture acupressure massage points. It works in similar principles like that of acupuncture acupressure massage. This method would inevitably leave bruise on the skin, and the story begins here, when the visiting grandpa who does not speak any English used this traditional practice to treat the grandson when both son and daughter-in-law were at work.Sadly, in US, this is a story that repeats itself many times in the area where many oriental immigrants lives and all of these are due to simple misunderstanding between cultures.Gua Sha: Step-by-Step, by Arya Nielsen. If an acupuncturist is trained in Classical Chinese medicine, they will do this technique in their practice for pain, and for acute or chronic illness.电影刮痧英文观后感

(二)Chinese immigrants struggle to hold onto their American dream after the husband's father(Xu Zhu)comes for a visit from mainland China and gives a si-mp-le Chinese Medicine therapy called Gua Sha to his grandson.Da Tong(Tony Leung Ka Fai)is the father who is trying to integrate his Chinese cultural beliefs into his daily American reality, especially when dealing with his bo(Hollis Huston)and best friend, who is too quick to believe the worst about Da Tong's treatment of his son, Dennis.Da Tong's failures show his confusion about the differences between his original Chinese culture and his new American home.Even within his family there is conflict because Grandfather can't speak English and is excluded from many conversations because Mother(Wenli Jiang)wants only English spoken in her home for the benefit of her American born son.Da Tong and his wife are very well educated and understand that their child's best chances for succein America, and for him not to experience the same troubles they've had during the past 8 years, are to speak without an accent. They even go so far as to insist the boy use a fork and knife instead of chopsticks, even when it's obvious they are still eating Chinese style food, served in the normal way: communal dishes for the food and smaller, individual rice bowls for each person.Mother seems a bit inflexible in her insistence on being as American as possible, while Da Tong's cultural leanings are just as strongly Chinese, although not by conscious choice.Da Tong's love for his son is tested severely when Da Tong tries to balance it against respect for his boss. When Da Tong's son hits his boss' son, Da Tong insists on an apology that seems unnecessary and makes Da Tong look stubborn and uncaring.Da Tong gives his boy a light rap on the head when he refuses to apologize and the boy cries to his mother that the reason he hit his playmate was that the other boy called Da Tong stupid, one of many examples of doing the wrong thing to protect your family. The conflict arising from doing the wrong thing out of love or respect for one's family or closest friends continues throughout the movie, and every way Da Tong turns, he finds failure and encounters both obvious and subtle forms of anti-Chinese racism.Even Chinese folklore about the Monkey King, Sun Wu Kong, that Da Tong incorporates into a video game he designed is used to provoke his pride when he's vulnerable and fearing for the loof his son.Da Tong is misunderstood by everyone, family, friend, and foe, even though he has only the best intentions, and he carries the responsibility quite heavily, ma-ki-ng one wrong turn after another.Gua Sha(The Treatment)shows how a person's cultural beliefs are so deeply set within oneself that it is usually impossible to examine why you do most anything, from how you dreand talk to whom you love and respect and how you show it.The invisible nature of one's cultural beliefs also makes it difficult to impossible to explain yourself to others when questioned.Da Tong experiences an excruciatingly painful and difficult struggle while trying to protect his son, an ordeal that forces him to examine the validity of some of the most vital things he thought he knew about his identity, his Chinese culture, and the new American world he'd chosen as his home. The movie showed me how normal it is for people to look for ways that their culture is superior to others' and how the misunderstandings arising from different cultural perspectives can seem very large, but can be nullified with si-mp-le, 2-sided explanations when people are willing to listen. It appears this film is not readily available in the USA, but it's the best I've seen at highlighting the differences between American and Chinese culture.Parts of the movie's dialog are only in Chinese and I've yet to find a DVD with English subtitles, although it's easy to get the gist of what's going on during those short passages. The credits are a combination of Chinese and English, holding true to the integration of both worlds.I've noticed some important roles are not credited here on IMDb, such as Judge Horowitz, who was played by Alexander Barton.

第五篇:《刮痧》英文观后感

Review about

Gua Sha is a movie concerning conflicts between American and Chinese culture.Xu Datong has got career achievements after lived 8 years in America.Unexpectedly, a incident has made this happy family in great trouble. The 5-year-old son, Dennis, gets stomach-ache, and the old grandpa has done the traditional treatment, Gua Sha to Dennis, which has inevitably left bruise on the skin.Subsequently, the bruise has become evidence of child abuse.Westerners cannot understand this traditional treatment at all.In order to get Dennis home, Xu Datong has to move out. Finally, with the help of his friend this family tragedy has finished. The culture conflicts occur in many aspects, such as laws, moral standards, legal theory and thinking modes.I will choose two of them to analysis the differences.Firstly, people have different ideas about the children education. In the eye of most Chinese, to hit the child is good for its development. In the film, to show respect to Kunnan, to give him face, Datong is entitled to hit Dennis. But for Westerners, parents and children are all equal.Parents can seldom decide what the children should do or not do, they let them develop themselves by their own efforts.Secondly, there are great differences in the conceptions to family.Chinese value family ethnics, family members should make contributions to the family, especially to the old.In the movie, we can see that Datong lies in the court in order not to affect his father to get his green card;and then conceals the bad news from his father. On contrary, for Westerners, the distribution of rights, obligations and identities is rather clear.Meanwhile, the movie has also expresses a desire for culture integration.People help the family to get through and congratulate for their family get-together.The end is perfect and the culture conflicts reflected in the movie require us to strengthen culture exchange and communication, which will make the word more harmonious.
