The catcher in the Rye is a typical novel which reflects the confusion and rebel of the 1950s in America history.From year 1945-1955, the American society seemed to be blissful on the surface while the fear of uncertainty caused by the growing communist challenge was affecting the culture of society.People became paranoiac and youngsters of the time became rebel or even violent resulting from the lost of aim and belief.Holton, the main character of this novel, is portrayed by the author as a typical teenager of the time.Born in a wealthy middle class family, Holton was supposed to live a good life.However, he expelled from school four times, not dare to go home, wandering alone in York city one day and two nights, living in small inn, going to nightclubs, being alcoholism.He wanted to escape from the real world because he feel depressed, confused, filled with all sorts of unrealistic fantasies.This novel can be defined as both the tragedy of Holton's and the author Salinger, who is a young people of that generation.In 1950, the Korean War started, which was an extension of the Cold War which strengthened the hostilities and conflicts between America and the Soviet Union.It definitely leaded to the panic of normal people because they were uncertain about the result of the competition between the superpowers.Teenagers were emotionally confused of the changing society, doubting their life and their future.Salinger has also written other novels such as Nine Stories, a collection of short stories even more depressed than The catcher in the Rye, which at least have expressed some hope at the end of the novel.Actually, characters like Holton become popular at that time, not in

在当代世界文学中,有一部书是被公认的现代经典,那就是塞林格的《麦田里的守望者》,成人阅读这本书,可以人增加对少年的理解。

作者生动细致地描绘了一个无产阶级子弟的苦闷,彷徨的精神世界,真实地揭露了资本主义社会精神文明的实质,人活着除了物质生活之外,还需要有精神生活,而且在一个比较富裕的社会里,精神生活往往比物质生活更为重要,本书中的主人公霍尔顿〃考尔菲便是美国五十年代“垮掉分子”的代表,但垮得还不到吸毒,群居的地步。霍尔顿尚想探索和追求理想,因此他向往东方哲学,提出长大长人后想当一个“麦田里的守望者”。

有那么一群小孩子在一块麦田地里做游戏,几千万个小孩子,附近没有一个人,没有一个大人,我是说,除了我;我呢,就站在那混帐的悬崖边,我的”职务就是在那儿守望,要是有哪个孩子,往悬崖边奔来,我就把他捉住,我是说孩子们都 在狂奔,也不知道 自己是往哪儿跑,我得从什么 地方出来,把他们捉住,我整天就干这样的事,我只想当个麦田里的守望者。

也就认为无法好好念书。因此他的不用功实质上是对资产阶级现行教育制度的一种反抗,另一方面,在他那样的生活的环境里,他又能找到什么可贵的精神寄托或崇高的理想信念呢?学校里的老师大部分都是势利的伪君子。连他所唯一敬佩的一位老师后来发现也可能是个搞同性恋的,而这位老师谆谆教导他的,也只是资产阶级利已主义的信条“一个不成熟的男子的标志是他愿意为某种事业英勇地互去,一个成熟的男子的标志是他愿意为某种事业卑贱地活者。”

他是青春期的少年代表,从他的经历里可以清楚的看到与家长的代沟,家长总希望他像哥哥一样可以成为出人头地的人,可是他的理想也只是做一个麦田里的守望者,站在悬崖上,捉住不断奔跑的孩子。大人总认为霍尔顿是一个败家子,是一个不良少年。但他有自己的思想,在他那半成熟的心中还存留着点点梦想,即使它在那污浊的世道变得那样的细微渺小。

他尽管看惯资本主义的世道,苦闷,彷徨,那那种不切实际的幻想安慰自己,自欺欺人,最后仍不免对现实社会妥协,成不了真正的叛逆,这可以是说是作者塞林格和他笔下人物霍尔顿的悲剧所在,作者描绘了霍尔顿的精神世界的各个方面,既揭示了他受环境影响颓废、没落的一面,也写出了他纯朴敏感,善良的一面。霍尔顿是明智的,是聪明的,他看透了社会的本质。他的朴素和善良,是他所在的年代很少的,虽然他的有些思想还比较幼稚,虽然他有许许多多的缺点,但他反抗现实、向往美好世界的纯洁的一面是不可忽视的。

作者借助笔下的霍尔顿,活灵活现的展现了自己的想法,用一个处于青春期的孩子的口吻讲述了一个关于那所谓“叛逆”的想法,讲述了成熟与不成熟之间的过渡,大人与青春期少年之间的代沟。霍尔顿的那个只想做一个麦田里的守望者的梦想,那个为了不让小孩子掉下悬崖而站在悬崖边救孩子的形象,那个纯洁无私的想法,天真幼稚却又些许成熟的心事,渐渐放大……

“无论如何,我总是在幻想,有那么一帮孩子在一片麦田里玩。成千上万个孩子,身边没有一个人——没有一个大人,我的意思是——我除外。而我,则在那混帐的悬崖边站着。我的任务就是在那里守望,如果有哪个小孩向悬崖这边狂奔过来,我便抓住他——我意思是孩子们都在奔跑,也不知道自己向什么地方跑,我要从什么地方出来,抓住他们。我每天就干这件事。我只是想当一个麦田里的守望者而已。”

有一天,刚参加完中考的女儿对我说:“爸爸,咱们学校图书室里有没有《麦田里的守望者》这本书?”我说:“你想看吗?我给你找找看吧。” 拿到这本书后,女儿如饥似渴地把它读完了,我问她:“你觉得这本书怎么样?它的主题是什么?”

“不怎么样”,女儿说。“咦?”我感到有点纳闷,一本风靡世界的优秀名著,在孩子的眼中第一感觉竟然是不怎么样,真让人不可思议!“怎么不怎么样?”我问。女儿说:“就是脏话太多了,动不动就是‘他妈的’。” “那它又表达了什么主题呢?”我接着问。女儿说:“作者的理想就是要当一个麦田里的守望者。”

“是像稻草人一样吗?”妻插了一句。“哪儿啊!”女儿笑着,把书翻到折角的一页递给妈妈说:“看看这一段,他就是想要把在麦田里快乐的疯跑向悬崖边的孩子抓住,防止他们掉下去。”

又过了几天,妻也把这本书读完了。“看看人家美国,在那个时候教育就那么发达,中学生两个人住一间宿舍,而且还有洗手间,有淋浴。咱们国家现在大学生有这个待遇吗?”女儿插了一句:“对了爸爸,高中能洗澡吗?”“能吧,”我说:“高中宿舍里有洗刷间,可以洗,但肯定不如在家里方便。”其实我们这里高中学校的条件虽然有了很大的改善,但学生在宿舍里洗澡还是有一定困难的,这也难怪妻的“崇洋媚外”。

断断续续地,我也把这本书读完了。在这本书中我更多地看到了一个成长中的少年对现实生活的迷茫、矛盾,和对理想的探求历程。

作为一名老师来说,小说的主人公霍尔顿的确不是一名合格的学生——在他身上有着那个时候很多学生都有的一些恶习——吸烟、喝酒、满嘴脏话、与同学打架,对学习不感兴趣以致四门功课有三门不及格而被学校开除(从书上看这已经是第四次了),在回家途中还有一次“不成功的招妓”。但是,他的对老师的尊敬、对妹妹发自内心的深切的喜爱、以及他内心深处的那份善良的流露、因其对自由快乐的向往和对现实的无奈而渴望做一个“麦田里的守望者”的理想还是让我对他、对这个世界的未来充满希望。

从霍尔顿与他的同学身上,我们看到了当时美国中学教育的一个“特点”:学生在物质条件优越的学习环境里并没有感受到学习的快乐。而造成这种状况的原因,我们在斯宾塞先生和安托尼利先生两位老师和“最虚伪”的校长老哈斯身

上可以找到答案。

两位老师的敬业精神和对学生在学业上的关心是非常值得我们学习的,但是他们的那种教育方式又是我们要努力改变的。小说中提到的第一位老师——老斯宾塞先生,也许是想为他的一个被开除的学生在即将离开学校的时候,给孩子指出他学习上的问题,给孩子一些忠告或帮助,所以让霍尔顿到他家去一次,而当时这位老先生正卧病在床。结果,当真正面对霍尔顿的时候,老先生又提到了“狗屁球赛”(作者认为的)、“纯粹是装模装样”的“最善良”的父母、丝毫没有自信的学习成绩,“像拿着臭屎似的”选读了“我”那张“混账试卷”,而这些却无一不是对作者无情的“嘲讽”,以至于让“我开始有点儿痛恨他了”。特别是老先生“将那封短信高声读出来”,让“我永远都无法原谅他”。很难想象,对于一个不成功的学生来说,他怎么能忍受这样“不怀好意”的讥讽”,再加上让“我无法忍受”的“混账中学埃克顿·希尔斯”的“最虚伪”的校长老哈斯,以至于“我真待不下去了”——先生家还是学校?两者都是!

第二位老师——“安托尼利先生是我一生中遇到过的最优秀的老师”,也是作者在向他的妹妹表达了“当一个麦田的守望者”的愿望以后,非常想要倾诉的人。但真正面对安托尼利先生的“谆谆诱导”,“我”又“确实不愿认真地思考”,以至于对先生写的纸条“立即读了一遍”,便“装入衣兜中”。但从纸条上的这两句话:“一个尚未成熟的男子的标志是他愿意为某种事业英勇地献身,一个成熟的男子的标志是他愿意为某种事业卑贱地生活”,我们可以看出当时成人的思想也有其混沌的一面,即便不是,那也不是一种积极的思想,用这样一种思想来引导一个十五、六岁的少年,结果只能适得其反。更何况这个少年正处于对现实世界的迷惘、矛盾、彷徨、焦虑,对成人的不信任甚至是厌恶的,无奈的成长阶段。最终,睡梦中的“我”,因为对安托尼利先生性变态(也可能只是老师对学生的关心而已,但作者实在是对“性变态”太敏感了,因为他已经至少有二十多次遇到过类似的情况了。)的极度恐惧而逃了出来。由此“我”下定决心离开这个地方——挣脱“现实”去流浪。

最终让“我”留下来的是“我”的妹妹,妹妹的善良、聪明、可爱,甚至要跟“我”一起去流浪的执着打动了“我”。还有妹妹骑在木马上快乐的笑声,让“我”感到了从未有过的真正的快乐,正是这份快乐让“我”豁然回归到现实的生活。

从一定意义上说,在物质生活日益发展的今天,我们身边那些处于青春期的、“艰难”成长的少年,很多人都有着霍尔顿所面临的这种困境。正如这本书的推荐理由所说“主人公的经历和思想在青少年中引起强烈共鸣,„„因为这部小说道出了他们的心声,反映了他们的理想、苦闷和愿望。”如何让他们在“一眼望不到边的‘麦田’里快乐的奔跑”,而又不会迷失自我,跌入“悬崖”,我们任重而道远。
