Thought after reading THE CATCHER IN THE RYE

Ⅰ.Introduction

THE CATCHER IN THE RYE is a full-length novel of J.D.Salinger.The author portrayed the three days’ hanging around life, from school toManhattan, of a seventeen-year-old teenager named Holden Caulfield who is expelled from Pencey Prep, an exclusive private school in Agerstown, Pennsylvania. He employed the writing technique of Stream of Consciousness exploring a teen’s inner world sufficiently.Anger and anxiety are the two themes of this book. The experiences and thinking of the protagonist make a great resonance among the adolescent readersfor which it becomes popular ,especially with the middle and high school students.According to some analyses, the book is a bildungsroman, a novel about a young man’s growth to maturity. What is worthy of our attention is that Holden is an unusual protagonist who refuses to grow up to be an adult adhering to the relief of being a child. He resists the progress of maturity. He is afraid of changing and is overwhelmed by complication. He wants everything to be easily understandable and eternally fixed. He hates the hypocrisy of the people and the cruelness of the reality with a result that he separates himself in a little world of his own with a protective armor. He invents a fantasy about the catcher in the rye that adulthood is a world of superficiality and phoniness, while the childhood

is a world of innocence, curiosity, and honesty. However, he is frustrated by the encounters with Mr.Antolini and Phoebe which reveal his shallowness of conception. It is his little sister, Phoebe, who rescues him from escaping from the reality with the decision of heading out west and living as a deaf-mute.As Phoebe rides the carousel which lies in the zoo, he realizes his mistakes. He is filled with happiness and joy all of a sudden at the sight of Phoebe riding the carousel in the rain.Ⅱ.the meaning of Holden’dream

What is the meaning of “ the catcher in the rye”?The protagonist said as follows: “Anyway, I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all.Thousands of little kids, and nobody's around--nobody big, I mean--except me.And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff--I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I'd do all day.I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all.I know it’s crazy, but that’s the only thing I’d really like to be.I know it’s crazy.” His dream is so simple and plain. He metaphors childhood as a big field of rye for child to run and play, while adulthood is death—falling down from the edge of a cliff.Ⅲ.The background of the book

J.D.Salinger wrote this book in a novel artistic style and explicit

language and open treatment of social sensitive issues such as teenage confusion, angst, alienation, and rebellion, psychological problems and sexuality. However, in the early 1950s, America made a great fortune in the World War.The economy developed rapidly after the end of the war.The living standard of the people improved shiftly with a result that more people were in middle class. However, the spiritual life of the residents became more and more dull and poor. The American government took on Truman Doctrine and McCarthyism and suppressed the progressive forces. The gunpowder of the Cold War would break immediately. The horror of the nuclear war became everyone’s nightmare. Some people were depressing. They do not try to change the current situation and just lead their lives in the muddle.More and more people got confused. While others could not stand the hypocrisy and vulgarity of the society and wanted to resist. But they were lacking of glorious dreams to find out a right way out.Ⅳ.THE CONTRADICTION OF HOLDEN

Holden despises the current situation of the society. He hates the phony and selfishness of the people around him.The pressure from the parents and teachers drives him crazy. The reason that He does not study his lessons at all hardly and was expelled by four schools is that he dislikes the material aim. However, in school what they do all day is talking about women, wine and sexuality. This is the world that Holden lives. He does

not want to follow the bad examples of others. It is natural that he could not study hard.So his lazy in study is a resistance to the current education system in essence. But to some extent he affected by them.Sometimes he would go to the bar and chat with them.He even asks for a prostitute in the hotel he lived. And times he displays as much phoniness, meanness and superficiality as anyone else in the book.He likes children and does not want them to fall over the cliff to be adulthood. He is unwilling to let the children to be put in touch with the human hypocrisy and ugliness. He wants them to stay innocence forever. That is why he loves his sister so much and drives crazy when he sees the “fuck you” on the wall of Phoebe’s school. However, children will grow up and go through this transition one day sooner or later. There is no doubt that children will be mature and lose their innocence. It is a nature rule that no one can change it.I want to be a catcher of the rye, too.Not a totally Holden one, but a variant.Try to be honest to myself and people around me.

The Painfulness of Growing Up

Recently I have read the book which is named “the catcher in the

rye”.When I picked up the book, I don't think so thin a book will be such a big influence on me, make me feel very deep.I think the form and content of this book are very well. The 1950s in USA is a quite period of chaos, the harm of world war ii has not yet disappeared. On the one hand, the development of science and technology goes rapidly, on the other hand, people lose the ideal and belief.People have no ability to change all the society, they live a terrible life.So “thewrostgeneration“ appeared.Holton is one of them, he smokes and drinks, he does nothing, but he does not take drugs, because in his heart, he always have beautiful and distant ideal-do a ”the catcher in the rye".The country we lived in is under a great change.Everything develops in a rapid rate.In a sense, this seems like the 1950s in the United States.Social moves forward, people's ideas are changing. Many people began to be confused, depressed, and they gradually forget his own ideal, they have no original enthusiasm. They begin to persue for indifferent.Bars, card rooms began to attract people. There are a lot of students in the Internet cafes and game rooms. We are a group of new forces who live in a new age.We have been

accustomed to be confused and annoyed, but we should focus on our road, we should have the ideal, from kidswe have a lot of dreams, we want to be

scientists, doctors, nurses, teachers… If Holdon does not have his pure ideal, then he will lose himself, but his ideal let him survive.Shouldour young people let the life become so chaotic? Yes, the ideal is the guidepost to people, it took people into the future, toward our goal. Our life is just beginning, even if life let this generation became some confused and hesitated. But everything is temporary, and everything will be the past.We now need most is our ideal.Where is a dream where is a hope.Tomorrow will have our hope, tomorrow will be better!Believe our life!
