【摘要】:商务英语函电是以英语为载体,与国际贸易专业知识关联紧密,表现形式多样且涉及文化差异与法律特征的一种信息沟通手段。鉴于商务英语函电的突出特点,商务英语论文在进行翻译时必须掌握一定的翻译技巧,确保翻译的准确性。

商务英语是一种被赋予了特定社会功能的英语变体,是特殊用途英语(English for Special Purpose,简称ESP)当中的一个分支,主要应用于商业环境当中。商务英语虽然是来源于通用英语,具有一般英语语言所具备的语言学特征,但是,由于它的使用范围有所限定,因此同时也表现出词汇及语法上的独特性。函电是商务交往中沟通联络、处理业务和交流信息最常用的一种方式。商务英语函电的特点及翻译技巧总结如下:

1.1 风格

以英语为表达载体商务英语函电是以英语为载体进行信息传递与沟通的一种商务信函。在国际贸易活动中所使用的语言具有风格简练、正式严谨、客观专业、礼貌得体等突出特点。随着世界经济一体化步伐的加快,国际间商务合作日益加强。在我国加入世界贸易组织后,与其他成员国的经济交往日趋频繁,对外经济贸易和技术合作迅速发展。国际贸易不断发展,而商务函电在当今世界贸易蓬勃发展之际,是国际商业交往中必不可少的手段,对外贸易的各个环节大多通过函电进行。从建立业务关系到达成交易,执行合同,以及执行合同过程中的纠纷等,大都需通过函电解决。因而,现代国际贸易又被称为“单据贸易”。在国际贸易的操作实务中,贸易各环节所有的交往函电都构成重要的法律依据。特别是当产生贸易纠纷时,它有可能左右纠纷解决的结果。国际贸易越来越依赖于单据交换的过程,商务函电的中心化作用也日渐明显。

与国际贸易专业知识紧密相关商务英语是应用于国际贸易业务的语言,必须与国际贸易实务及专业相关,贯穿于国际贸易合作关系的确立、询盘、报盘、还盘、下单、签订合同、货物运输、支付价款、客户服务等诸多环节。这就要求国际贸易从业人员应全面掌握国际贸易的实务知识,并在函电阅读写作中善于灵活运用专业知识做出正确的翻译。

1.3 表现形式

表现形式多种多样从内容来看,常用的商务函电类型主要有商洽函、询问函、答复函、请求函、告知函和联系函等。从传递方式来看,则可以分为邮寄、快递、电报、电子邮件以及基于互联网的在线即时沟通。随着信息技术、多媒体技术和网络技术的发展,人类社会进入了信息社会,信函在业务交流中不再占主导地位,而是很大程度上代之以传真、互联网、电子邮件等更为迅速、方便、经济的通讯手段,但在信息内容和形式来看,其基本格式、表达方式和内容都没有大的变化。可以说,传真和电子邮件是一封用传真或电子邮件方式投递的信函。特别是随着电子商务方式的发展,进出口商可在网上轻轻松松地发广告、报价格、下定单、签合同、结货款等。电子商务的应用,是提高国际贸易效率的最有效办法之一,电子化、网络化国际贸易是国际贸易的发展方向。据在外贸行业工作的人员介绍,目前的商务交流98%使用的是E-MAIL,其余的是电传,有时候会打打电话。

1.4 涉及文化差异

涉及文化差异商务英语函电主要用于国际贸易中的交易双方的业务交流,自然与国外企业相关,根本目的是实现跨境文化的沟通以及不同文化背景下人们的互动。也就是说,写一个有效的商务英语函电不仅仅是体现外贸人员运用语言的能力,而且还从另一面考验从业人员和国际贸易伙伴的交际技巧,特别是跨越文化差异的交际能力。

2商务英语函电翻译技巧

2.1 语言精练、用词规范

语言精练、用词规范国际贸易中的买家和卖家能够借助精练的语言实现快速、有效的沟通。按照国际贸易惯例,使用精练的语言进行信息交流是非常重要的。针对这个特点,商务英语翻译应注意从易于理解的角度出发,提高语句的精确度和清晰度,而不是堆砌辞藻,追求用词的华丽。在词汇方面,要选择使用较为常见的字词,以保证词汇的国际通用性,确保函电的阅读者能够理解。当然,由于商务英语函电代表了企业的形象,用词也不能过于口语化和非正式化。尤其是涉及一些商业文书(如合同),因为具有法律约束力,所以必须更加规范严谨。如使用prior to、preceding或者previous to而不使用before;使用supplement而不使用add to等。但在介词方面,商务英语往往使用繁复的介词短语来代替简单的介词和连词,如:用in the nature of代替like。例如:Payment by irrevocable L/C is our usual practice.After receipt of your L/C,we will effect

2.2 使用专业术语、英文缩写

大量使用专业术语、英文缩写和套语国际贸易业务在长期的发展中,有许多高频词汇被简化、缩写,便于人们使用在商务英语函电中。这些专业术语、英语缩写词也已被广泛接受,并且避免了歧义。由于国际贸易的交易环节中的询盘、报盘、货运、保险、理赔等形式大体相同,其函电格式逐渐固定下来形成套语。例如,术语letter of credit(信用证),firm offer(实盘),demurrage(滞期费)等等。又如,缩略语T/T(电汇),B/L(提单),D/P(付款交单)等。再如,to draw(a draft)on someone(开具以某人为付款人的汇票).to open an L/C in one’S favor(开立以某人为抬头的信用证)等等。在这些词汇进行翻译时,应按照约定俗成尽量使用这些术语、缩写和套语。例如:We hereby make you an offer for 2000 sets of Sewing Machines on the basis of CIF including 3%commission.(我公司给贵公司报2000台缝纫机的到岸价格包括3%的佣金)。以“通知”或“告知”的翻译为例,普通英语常用to tell来表达该概念,但在外贸函电英语中则经常使用to inform,to notify,例如:Please inform US of your earliest date of shipmen.(请告知我公司贵公司的最早装船日期。)需要注意的是,在对这些句子进行翻译时,切记不能按字面意思直译,也不能随意自创一些术语、缩写和套语。因此,译者要提高国际贸易的专业水平,从文献资料、专业期刊甚至是新闻报道中留意收集专业术语、英语缩写和各种套语,并加以灵活的应用,使翻译流畅,清晰。

2.3 使用礼貌用语

“不胜其烦”的礼貌用语中国是个一个礼仪之邦,悠久的历史文明造就了中国人热情、友善、彬彬有礼的传统。在国际贸易交往中,同样十分讲究礼节,函电中常常使用到礼貌用语。礼貌用语主要是要表达对对方尊重和礼貌,而将信息传递的功能退居其次。对于初次接受商务英语函电翻译的人来说,不胜其烦的礼貌用语似乎有些多余。但实际上,如果掌握了礼貌用语的翻译规律就能很轻松的完成翻译了,并对函电翻译的整体架构有所帮助。例如,以表达感谢内容为主的函电是商务活动中较为常见的一种函电格式。这种函电的开头礼貌就有十余种之多,主要有以下几种:Thank you for your letter of...(谢谢贵公司的来函...)We receive with thanks your letter of(我公司收到贵公司感谢函...)We are obliged to receive your letter of...(我公司有责任在到贵公司函...)We appreciate your letter of...(我公司感谢贵公司的函...)We are very much pleased

/glad to receive your letter o f...(我公司非常高兴/高兴收到贵公司的函...)We have received with pleasure your letter of...(我公司高兴地收到贵公司的函)再如:We will appreciate your effecting immediate shipment.(如蒙贵公司尽快完成装运,我公司将不胜感激。)We will be obliged if you could quote US a favorable price。(贵公司如能报给我公司优惠价格,我公司将十分感谢。)此外,在商务活动中,当对方没有满足自己的要求或无意与对方合作时,礼貌用语能够委婉地表达出拒绝的意思,常常起到以柔克刚的作用。因此,在翻译时,译者要讲求一定的策略,尽量把原文中强硬唐突的词句翻译为婉转、有礼貌的英文。例如:We regret that we are not in a position to accept your offer.(我公司无法接受贵公司报盘,请见谅。)We regret to inform you that we are not in a position to supply you with such large demands.(我公司现在不能供应如此大量的需求,甚歉。

随着国际贸易市场竞争的日益激烈,国际间的贸易来往更加频繁,而商务英语就成了国际间来往的桥梁,它也是国际贸易活动中不可缺少的沟通工具。实际上,商务英语控制着国际交流,国际交流离不开商务英语,这也必然导致商务信函风格和语言上变化,曾经那些千篇一律的陈旧词汇已经无法跟上新时代的发展了。而今,商务交流中的信息来往要求内容简单,重点突出,并已经成为一种交流趋势,而商务英语函电的翻译要从商务信函的文体语言特点着手。 商务英语函电的特点

商务函电与一般的交流信息不同,它特点鲜明,并有固定的翻译原则,其目的是维持良好的业务关系,促进商务沟通,保证正常的商务来往。其核心为效率,经济性与简洁性为效率的核心,并要求高效率和充实的内容,二者是互相促进的,缺一不可。

2.1 文体特点

在信息重新分配和组合的过程中,要首先考虑语言的结构,尤其是文体。事实上,文体主要分为5类,即专业文体、正式文体、非正式文体、随意文体、亲密文体。由于商务函电直接涉及到国家之间的贸易来往信息,且同银行、海关、运输、法律等专业知识有着密不可分的联系,所以应今本归纳为专业文体或者正式文体。

2.2 语言特点

商务函电所要求的三个基本原则是:准确、简洁、清楚。这些都是对语言方面的要求,而体贴、礼貌,则是针对态度和角度方面的要求。同时要求格式的完整,函电内容也要具体丰富,内容中要避免一些无实际意义的多余词汇,内容要严格的把握重点。商务函电不仅有特殊的背景,还要求翻译人员要有实际的商务工作技能。

主要的语言特点可以归纳为两点:商务函电的涉及范围有贸易、金融、外汇、海关、商检等诸多领域,其行业特征比较明显,因此,需要对语言进行合理选择;商务人员的思维模式具体、审慎,讲究语言表达的分寸。具体的表现是,语言表达要简单明了,突出重点。用词规范、语法结构严谨、句子排列一般固定有序。语篇连贯、逻辑性强。

2.3 翻译特点

商务函电翻译的目的是要体现函电的实际效用,能准确及时的传达信息,而绝非是为了单纯的美感和语言的华丽。按照贸易的不同类型,其翻译目的也不一样,采用不同的手段处理不同的内容;翻译过程是固定的,严格控制错误。因而,翻译人员不仅要熟悉专业知识,还要有合理的发挥。

翻译的根本在意表达准确的意思,还要求专业术语的精确;同时,要善于运用语言,用有限的词汇表达出更精准的意思,将相关的信息更为精练准确地表达出来。由于商务函电涉及英、汉语言的翻译与运用,且函电又有其语言、语法、句子结构等方面的特殊性,再加上中西文化上的差异,这也导致了商务函电的翻译可能无法精确的表达其意思,只能是相对的精确。因此,我们必须认识到这一点,对今后商务函电的翻译起着重要的作用。 商务英语函电的翻译技巧

正确的理解原文的意思是做好翻译工作的基础。翻译是对两种语言的转换,需要翻译人员对两种语言都有较好的理解,并合理解决它们之间存在的差异。而娴熟的翻译技巧就是处理这里问题的方法,翻译技巧所涉及的内容十分广泛,从语言到语法,从结构到内容,每一个方面都需要翻译技巧作为翻译基础,可见,翻译技巧在函电翻译中起着十分重要的作用。

3.1 词汇翻译技巧

商务英语函电的词汇翻译很关键,而对专业词汇的精确运用则体现出娴熟的翻译技巧,其中包含一些大学专业词汇,具有商务含义的普通词和复合词,以及一些专业的缩写词等。例如UC表示信用证;W.P.A水演险等等。如果翻译人员对这些专业词汇不了解或者没有专业知识,就无法做好商务函电的翻译。

英语和汉语中,相同的词汇会出现不同意思和不同范围的的情况,这些都属于一词多意,如果仅仅依靠查字典,是无法真正解决问题的,必须在联系上下文的意思后,通过总结,找出该词汇代表的真实含义。在商务英语函电中,我们还会遇到一些词在其实际应用中与其它词语搭配后产生具体意义。

商务函电翻译与一般的文学翻译不同。文学翻译要保证原文的神韵和内容,做到神似。函电翻译需要的是对内容的精准翻译。

首先,要按照语言使用规范正确的使用套语。如:Please quote us the lowest price CIF New York with a 5 percent commission,and indicate the quantity that you can supply for October shipment.利用套语就应该是“请报来最低CIF纽约价包括5%佣金,并说明可供十月份装运的数量。”其次,要注意多义词的使用。如“The product will find a good market in New York”。此产品在纽约将有很好的销路。“Chinese ceramic products are verypopular in Europe.We would like to work with you to market themin Canada”。中国的陶瓷产品在欧洲很受欢迎,我们愿同你方合作在加拿大销售。”

从上面两个例子中可以看出,market既有市场、销路,又有营销、出售之意。翻译时还要根据上下文的意思,对该词做正确的翻译,避免误解。如The goods were received contrary to our instructions arepacked in wooden cases without iron hoops。句中的contrary to our instructions实际上是修饰“包装”而不是“货物”的意思。正是因为由contrary to our instructions的位置提前,容易让翻译人员误解。

最后,在遵守翻译程序时,还要注意翻译技巧的运用。如信函中Dear sirs,一般不译为“亲爱的先生们”,而译为“(执事)先生”或“径启者”。

3.2 用词礼貌,语气委婉

一份文雅、彬彬有礼有质量的函电,会让阅读信件的人心情舒畅,同时留下良好的印象,对双方的贸易来往有积极的作用,这对这笔交易的达成有很大的促进作用。所以,译员在翻译外贸信函时要选择合适的语言,不仅要实现正确的翻译,还要将原文中要表达的礼貌充分的体现出来,保证翻译能在语言上形成对等。我们主要可以通过使用正确的语气,恰当的委婉语以及适度的模糊语策略来实现。

例如,当拒绝对方的报盘时,通常使用“We regret to say that…”等较为温和语气来表达自己的意思。即使本次交易没有成功,也会给对方留下好的印象,不会影响到未来的合作关系。“We are afraid, we would say…”“Wouldyou like…”等句型也都有舒缓语气、避免绝对化的作用,可以给业务合作留下更多商量和协作的余地,有利于合作关系的建立。翻译时适当使用模糊用语可以使礼貌策略更加突出。

3.3 译文流畅,风格一致

在外贸活动中,交易双方从陌生到熟悉,从建立业务关系开始直到交易的达成,期间交往的信函不计其数,随着不断变化的状况,信函的内容也千变万化。然而信函翻译的风格应该保持整体的一致连贯,如实反映信函的原貌,让阅读信函的人有亲切的感觉,不致觉得唐突陌生。英文函电翻译的这些专业化特点要求翻译人员必须投入大量的时间和精力不断丰富完善自身的专业知识与翻译技巧,从而适应对外贸易迅猛发展的需要。 结语
