Spiders can be distinguished from other Arachnids because the prosoma(combined head and thorax)is only separated from the opisthosoma(abdomen)by a narrow waist, in other Arachnids the whole body appears to be much more of a single unit. All spiders produce silk, but only some construct webs to catch their homes and to protect their eggs. All spiders possess poison glands but very few of them are dangerous to humans, of the 600+species in Britain only 12(at least one of these is a recent human assisted colonist)are strong enough to pierce the human skin, and apart from allergies, none are more dangerous than a common wasp. Most spiders have 8 eyes(though some have 6,4,2 or 0), as well as 8 legs.(by the way if you count the claws as separate leg section [which you shouldn‟t really] then their legs have 8 parts as well [coxa, trochanter, femur, patella, tibia, tarsus, metatarus, claws])There are more than 32000 known species of spider in the world. No human being has ever been officially recorder as having died as the result of a „tarantula‟ bite. All spiders are carnivorous and feed only on liquids, i.e.their preys natural juices and the breakdown products of external digestion(meaning they spit, exude or inject digestive juices onto/into their prey ad suck up the resulting soup). So why not invite some to your next social do?
What’s In a Name
The word „Arachnida‟ comes from the Greek word „Arachne‟ who was the daughter of Idmon of Colophon in Lydia, a dyer by trade.Arachne herself was a weaver, the best in
all the known world. However in a foolish moment she challenged Athene, the daughter of Zeus and goddess of, among other things, waving to a weaving competition.Arachne wove so perfect a cloth that she tore it to shreds.Arachne became depressed after this and in the end she hung herself.Athene stirred to remorse at the knowledge of what her anger had wrought turned the rope Arachne had used to hang herself into a web and Arachne herself into a spider so that the beauty of her spinning should not be lost to the world ever again. The Great Household Spider Safari
There are just over six hundred different sorts of spider in the British Isles. But of these only a handful are commonly found in houses. At the front of the head are a pair of what appear to be small legs. These are called palps and are used to guide food to the spider‟s mouth. The front of the head also has a group of six or eight eyes.On the underside of the body at the rear, are four or six small conical bumps or cylinders. There are the spinnerets from which the spider produces the silk to make its webs.Telling male and female spiders apart is easily done by looking at their palps.Males have swollen ends to their palps which makes them look as if they are wearing boxing gloves, these are often strange shapes if looked at with a hand lens.Females have normal looking palps that are not swollen at the ends. The largest spider is the Goliath spider, the female of which grows to reach a leg span of ten inches. The largest spider in Britain is the Cardinal spider which is a close cousin of Tim Tegenaria.Females can achieve a leg span of four and a half inches. It is known as the Cardinal spider as it was common in Hampton Court when Cardinal Wolsey lived there. The sight of these long legged spiders wandering around the palace at night used to frighten him.So far 32000 different kinds of spider have been discovered from all over the world.Britain has 630 different kinds of spider of which 250 are tiny Money spiders. The smallest of which has a body less than one millimeter long.1.All the silk produced by spiders construct webs to catch their food
2.Not all the poison glands possessed by spiders are dangerous to human beings.3.Spiders often kill humans in Britain when they pierce human skin.4.After seeing her enemy commits suicide, Arachne turned Athena into a spider.5.TimTegenaria spiders are closely related to tarantula spiders;both are found in Britain.6.So far32000 different kinds of spiders have been discovered from all over the world.7.Money spiders are the smallest spiders found in the Arachnids family.8.There are more than _____ known species of spider in the world.9.Telling male and female spiders apart is easily done by ______.10.The largest spider is _______.姓

Questions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage. In the early days of the internet, many people worried that as people in the rich world embraced new computing and communications technologies, people in the poor world would be left stranded on the wrong side of a “digital divide.” Yet the debate over the digital divide is founded on a myth — hat plugging poor countries into the internet will help them to become rich rapidly. This is highly unlikely, because the digital divide is not a problem in itself, but a symptom of deeper, more important divides: of income, development and literacy.Fewer people in poor countries than in rich ones own computers and have access to the internet simply because they are too poor, are illiterate, or have other more immediate concerns, such as food, health care and security. So even if it were possible to wave a magic wand and cause a computer to appear in every household on earth, it would not achieve very much: a computer is not useful if you have no food or electricity and cannot read.Yet such Wand-waving — through the construction of specific local infrastructure projects such as rural telecenters — is just the sort of thing for which the UN's new fund is intended. This sort of thing is the wrong way to go about addressing the inequality in access to digital technologies: it is treating the symptoms, rather than the underlying causes. The benefits of building rural computing centers, for example, are unclear.Rather than trying to close the divide for the sake of it, the more sensible goal is to determine how best to use technology to promote bottom-up development. And the answer to that question turns out to be remarkably clear: by promoting the spread not of PCs and the Internet, but of mobile phones.57.What is the main idea of this passage?
A)Plugging poor countries into the Internet will help them to become rich rapidly.B)Poor countries should be given more basic devices other than advanced ones.C)Rich countries should help poor ones becoming rich.D)People in poor countries cannot afford devices such as computer.58.What did the author mean by referring “digital divide.”(Line 3, Para.1)?
A)Digital technology will make the gap between rich world and poor world wider.B)Digital technology will divide people into rich and poor world.C)People can be divided digitally.D)To divide people in digital world is wrong.姓

Questions 62 to 66 are based on the following passage.Space is a dangerous place, not only because of meteors(流星)but also because of rays from the sun and other stars. The atmosphere again acts as our protective blanket on earth.Light gets through, and this is essential for plants to make the food which we eat.Heat, too, makes our environment endurable.Various kinds of rays come through the air from outer space, but enormous quantities of radiation from the sun are screened off.As soon as men leave the atmosphere they are exposed to this radiation but their spacesuits or the walls of their spacecraft, if they are inside, do prevent a lot of radiation damage.Radiation is the greatest known danger to explorers in space. The unit of radiation is called “rem”.Scientists have reason to think that a man can put up with far more radiation than 0.1 rem without being damaged;the figure of 60 reins has been agreed on.The trouble is that it is extremely difficult to be sure about radiation damage — a person may feel perfectly well, but the cells of his or her sex organs may be damaged, and this will no be discovered until the birth of deformed children or even grandchildren.Missions of the Apollo flights have had to cross belts of high amount of rems.So far, no dangerous amounts of radiation have been reported, but the Apollo missions have been quite short. We simply do not know yet how men are going to get on when they spend weeks and months outside the protection of the atmosphere, working in a space effective ones have been found so far.62.According to the first paragraph, the atmosphere is essential to man in that ____.A)It protects him against the harmful rays from spaceB)It provides sufficient light for plant growth
C)It supplies the heat necessary for human survivalD)It screens off the falling meteors
63.We know from the passage that ____.A)Exposure to even tiny amounts of radiation is fatalB)The effect of exposure to radiation is slow in comingC)Radiation is avoidable in space exploration
D)Astronauts in spacesuits needn't worry about radiation damage
64.The harm radiation has done to the Apollo crew members ____A)is significantB)seems overestimatedC)is enormous D)remains unknown
65.It can be inferred from the passage that ____.A)The Apollo mission was very successful
B)Protection from space radiation is no easy job
C)Astronauts will have deformed children or grandchildrenD)Radiation is not a threat to well-protected space explorers

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay on the topic Why People Migrate to Another Country? You should write at least 120 words, and base your composition on the outline(given in Chinese):
1)近年来越来越多的人移居到国外
2)分析其原因
3)“我”的看法
本题属于提纲式文字命题。提纲第1点要 求描述近年来社会上出现的一种现象,提纲第2点要求分析出现这种现象的原因,提纲第3点则要求阐述“我”的看法,由此可判断本文应为现象解释型作文。
根据所给提纲,本文应包含以下内容:描述近年来越来越多的人移居到国外的现象;分析其产生的原因; 阐述“我”的观点。
Why People Migrate to Another Country?
Many people choose to live in a foreign country, which has aroused great concern.Nowadays, more and more people, especially plenty of intellectuals, migrate to some developed countries, such as America, England and Canada. In addition, there are still many people studying and working in foreign countries struggling for “green cards”.There are many reasons accounting for this phenomenon.Among all these factors, pursuing high-quality life plays a critical role. Moreover, most of them migrate to some foreign countries with a view to making their children receive good education there.Besides, some people just want to experience a different culture they like. All these above factors contribute to their choice to migrate to another country. As far as I am concerned, though I enjoy various cultures all over the world, I won’t migrate to another country. For one thing, I don’t like to live far from my friends and relatives. For another, I can’t bear to speak and listen to a foreign language from day to night. In a word, everyone has his right to decide where to live, and everyone’s choice should be respected.

Buying or Borrowing Books?
Books can arm us with knowledge and information we need to make success of life. There are generally two ways in which we can have access to books: borrowing or buying. While millions are borrowing books, I still think buying them best suits me and gives me the greatest pleasure. Many people choose to borrow books. For one thing, borrowing books can save us huge amounts of money. For another, if we borrow books from the library or friends, we normally have deadline to finish them. And consequently we can read more books in a limited time, just as a famous Chinese saying goes, “books can not be read unless borrowed.”
I believe that advantages for buying books are more obvious and compelling.Firstly, we can keep the books as long as we wish.Secondly, we can take whatever notes on the margin of the pages of the books. Finally, the process of selecting and keeping books can be a great fun.4.
My fellow students, Last Friday, the Students‟ Union of our Department organized a clean-up project to Zhongshan Lake. The purpose of this project is to enhance(加强)the environment awareness of general public.Late in the afternoon around 4, a group of 35 volunteers went to the park where we pick up the trash(垃圾)left by some tourists. As head of the group, I would like to report to you on the event.Actually, we did a wonderful job. When we were collecting the trash near the lake, many people paused to watch and then came to our help, showing considerable appreciation and support. But our work still left some to be desired. For one thing, since our project started late in the afternoon, hours were not long enough to attract enough people as we had predicted. For the other, lots of people passed by apparently not knowing what we were doing. But for these two drawbacks, our project could have been much better and more effective. So, following are two of my suggestions: next time we have similar activities, try to start earlier, say in the morning. In this case we can put in more hours. And also, as we are getting along, we can put up some posters to tell people what we are doing and call their attention to environment protection.Thank you.5.
A: staying at home B: traveling C: doing social investigation D: other ways
From the two charts, we can see that in the past ten years the students who go traveling and do social investigations during vacations have increased greatly while those who stay at home have decreased a lot. There are several reasons for the changes.Firstly, with the development of economy, many people have become better off.Students can get financial support from their parents for traveling.Secondly, tourism has greatly developed over the past ten years. Many new scenic spots have been built and exploited. In addition, the students today are expected and encouraged to participate in facing the real world. In this way they can obtain the necessary experiences required when they go job-hunting upon graduation. From the changes in the charts, we can predict that more and more college students will make their vacations interesting and worthwhile by going to the outside world instead of staying at home.Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay on the topic of Studying Abroad. You should write at least

Recent years have witnessed a phenomenon that more and more students swarm into foreign countries to finish their education. They have not considered our homeland as the unique place to enrich their knowledge any more.Instead, some excellent boys and girls whose financial condition is fine simultaneously began to pay their attention on some oversea prestigious colleges and institutions and dream to get degrees there. There are several reasons to cause this change.First of all, with the globalization and much more frequent communications with developed countries, most of the people in China get to realize the wide gaps in many fields, especially in science and technology, between China and western countries. They thirst for studying aboard to get ready better for the fierce competition in the job-hunting market. Moreover, the life in foreign countries is usually attractive to young people and studying aboard may satisfy their curiosity.Besides, the rapid development of our mother country and the remarkable growth in our income make going abroad to study available, which is almost impossible to average Chinese students in the past. The move-out of our students changes our society a lot.On one hand, being students in foreign universities will widen their view and offer them more possibility to get favorite jobs. And consequently their success will draw more latecomers to do the same thing. On the other hand, if the majority of them will not go back to China to work in the future, our fatherland will probably suffer a significant loss which may be difficult to be estimated by money.
1、Studying Abroad or Home
Nowadays, with the development of science and technology, more?and?more?people want to study abroad. There are students from colleges and universities, from the middle schools, from the primary schools, and people from all walks of life. What difference does it make?between studying abroad and studying home ?
Though many students are crazy about going abroad to pursue their higher education, I think studying home is preferable. For one thing, you don‟t have to take foreign language tests such as TOEFL and GRE.This can save you a tremendous amount of time, money and effort, allowing much of your energy to be devoted to your academic foals. In addition, if you study home ,you can stay with your family and old friends.Meanwhile , while studying home ,you can enjoy the kind of intimate friendship and comfortable family atmosphere which you can only dream of in a foreign university , where you will be accompanied by your own shadow most of the time. For these reasons, pursuing one‟s higher education at home is a more realistic and sensible choice. In a word, I prefer to study home. The Intensified Postgraduate Entrance Examination
It can be seen from the graph that there are more and more students attending the postgraduate entrance examination year by year.Compared with before, the rate of the student taking part in the postgraduate entrance examination becomes higher and higher. In the meanwhile, the admittance rate is also rising. What are the reasons for this and the possible consequences? On the one hand, there are three reasons for this.First, the job market becomes more and more competitive. As a result, most people want to find or exchange for a better job by obtaining a high degree.Second, most college students want to pursue their study after their graduation from the undergraduate.Third, with the development the science and technology, what has been learned at college is not enough to meet the need of the society. On the other hand, there are some possible consequences of this. For one thing, most people will be force to pay more attention to the examination than to the improvement of their true ability. For another, it will have a negative effect not only on the individual but also on the society in the long run.Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a Letter of Apology. You should write at least 120 words following the outline given below in Chinese:
