1.《郑伯克段于鄢》

从前,郑武公在申国娶了一个妻子,名叫武姜,她生下庄公和共叔段。庄公出生时难产,武姜受到惊吓,因此给他取名叫“寤生”,所以很厌恶他。武姜偏爱共叔段,想立共叔段为世子,多次向武公请求,武公都不答应。

到庄公即位的时候,武姜就替共叔段请求分封到制邑去。庄公说:“制邑是个险要的地方,从前虢叔就死在那里,若是封给其它城邑,我都可以照吩咐办。”武姜便请求封给太叔京邑,庄公答应了,让他住在那里,称他为京城太叔。

大夫祭仲说:“分封的都城如果城墙超过三百方丈长,会成为国家的祸害。先王的制度规定,国内最大的城邑不能超过国都的三分之一,中等的不得超过它的五分之一,小的不能超过它的九分之一。现在,京邑的城墙不合法度,不符合法制,您的利益会受到损害。”庄公说:“姜氏想要这样,我如何躲开这种祸害呢?”祭仲回答说:“姜氏哪有满足的时候!不如及早处置,别让祸根滋长蔓延,一滋长蔓延就难办了。蔓延开来的野草还很难铲除干净,何况是您那受到宠爱的弟弟呢?”庄公说:“多做不义的事情,必定会自己垮台,你姑且等待。”

过了不久,太叔段使原来属于郑国的西边和北边的边邑既属于郑,又归为自己,成两属之地。公子吕说:“国家不能有两个国君,现在您打算怎么办?您如果打算把郑国交给太叔,那么我请求去服侍他;如果不给,那么就请除掉他,不要使百姓们产生疑虑。”庄公说:“不用管他,他自己会遭到灾祸的。”太叔又把两处地方改为自己统辖的地方,一直扩展到廪延。公子吕说:“可以行动了!土地扩大了,他将得到老百姓的拥护。”庄公说:“对君主不义,对兄长不亲,土地虽然扩大了,他最终会垮台的。”

共叔段修整了城郭,准备好了充足的粮食,修缮盔甲兵器,准备好了步兵和战车,将要偷袭郑国都。武姜准备为共叔段打开城门做内应。庄公知道了共叔段偷袭郑的日期,说:“可以出击了!”于是命令子封率领二百辆战车,去讨伐京邑。京邑的人民背叛共叔段,共叔段于是逃到鄢城。庄公又追到鄢城讨伐他。五月二十三日,共叔段逃到共国。

《春秋》记载道:“郑伯克段于鄢。”意思是说共叔段不遵守做弟弟的本分,所以不说他是弟弟;兄弟俩如同两个国君一样争斗,所以用“克”字;称庄公为“郑伯”(意为大哥),是讥讽他对弟弟失教;赶走共叔段是出于郑庄公的本意,不写共叔段自动出奔,是史官下笔对庄公的责难。

庄公就把武姜安置在城颍,并且发誓说:“不到黄泉(不到死后埋在地下),不再见面!”过了些时候,庄公后悔了。有个叫颍考叔的,是颍谷管理疆界的官吏,听到这件事,去把贡品献给郑庄公。庄公赐给他饭食。

颍考叔在吃饭的时候,把肉留着。庄公问他为什么这样。颍考叔答道:“小人有一个母亲,我吃的东西她都吃过,只是从未吃过君王的肉羹,请让我带回去送给她吃。”庄公说:“你有个老娘可以孝敬,唉,唯独我就没有!”颍考叔说:“请问您为什么这么说?”庄公把原因告诉了他,还告诉颖考叔他后悔的心情。颍考叔答道:“您有什么忧虑的?只要掘地挖出泉水,挖个隧道,在那里见面,那谁能说不是这样(不是跟誓词相合)呢?”庄公依了他的话。庄公走进隧道去见武姜,赋诗道:“大隧之中相见啊,多么和乐相得啊!”武姜走出地道,赋诗道:“大隧之外相见啊,多么舒畅快乐啊!”于是姜氏和庄公作为母亲和儿子跟从前一样(即恢复了母子关系)

君子说:“颍考叔是位真正的孝子,他不仅孝顺自己的母亲,而且把这种孝心推广到郑伯身上。《诗经·既醉》篇说:‘孝子不断地推行孝道,永远能感化你的同类。’大概就是对颍考叔这类孝子而说的吧?”

2.《齐桓公伐楚》

齐桓公与夫人蔡姬在园林中乘舟游玩,蔡姬故意晃动小船,桓公吓得脸色都变了,他阻止蔡姬,蔡姬却不听。桓公一怒之下让她回到了蔡国,但没有说与她断绝夫妻关系,蔡姬的哥哥蔡穆侯却让她改嫁了。

鲁僖公四年的春天,齐桓公率领诸侯国的军队攻打蔡国。蔡国溃败,接着又去攻打楚国。

楚成王派使节到齐军对齐桓公说:“您住在北方,我住在南方,因此牛马发情相逐也到不了双方的疆土。没想到您进入了我们的 国土这是什么缘故?”管仲回答说:“从前召康公命令我们先君大公说:‘五等诸侯和九州长官,你都有权征讨他们,从而共同辅佐周王室。’召康公还给了我们先君征讨的范围:东到海边,西到黄河,南到穆陵,北到无隶。你们应当进贡的包茅没有交纳,周王室的祭祀供不上,没有用来渗滤酒渣的东西,我特来征收贡物; 周昭王南巡没有返回,我特来查问这件事。”楚国使臣回答说: “贡品没有交纳,是我们国君的过错,我们怎么敢不供给呢?周昭王南巡没有返回,还是请您到水边去问一问吧!”于是齐军继续前进,临时驻扎在陉。

这年夏天,楚成王派使臣屈完到齐军中去交涉,齐军后撤,临时驻扎在召陵。

齐桓公让诸侯国的军队摆开阵势,与屈完同乘一辆战车观看军容。齐桓公说:“诸侯们难道是为我而来吗?他们不过是为了继 承我们先君的友好关系罢了。你们也同我们建立友好关系,怎么样?屈完回答说:“承蒙您惠临敝国并为我们的国家求福,忍辱接纳我们国君,这正是我们国君的

心愿。”齐桓公说:“我率领这些 诸侯军队作战,谁能够抵挡他们?我让这些军队攻打城池,什么样的城攻不下?”屈完回答说:‘如果您用仁德来安抚诸侯,哪个敢不顺服?如果您用武力的话,那么楚国就把方城山当作城墙,把 汉水当作护城河,您的兵马虽然众多,恐怕也没有用处!”

后来,屈完代表楚国与诸侯国订立了盟约。

3.《烛之武退秦师》

(僖公三十年)九月十日,晋文公和秦穆公联合围攻郑国,因为郑国曾对文公无礼,并且从属于晋的同时又从属于楚。晋军驻扎在函陵,秦军驻扎在氾水的南面。

佚之狐对郑伯说:“郑国处于危险之中了!假如让烛之武去见秦伯,(秦国的)军队一定会撤退。”郑伯听从了他的意见。烛之武推辞说:“我年轻时,尚且不如别人;现在老了,也不能有什么作为了。”郑文公说:“我早先没有重用您,现在危急之中求您,这是我的过错。然而郑国灭亡了,对您也不利啊!”烛之武答应了郑伯。

在夜晚(有人)用绳子(将烛之武)从城上放下去,见到了秦伯,烛之武说:“秦、晋两国围攻郑国,郑国已经知道要灭亡了。假如灭掉郑国对您有好处,怎敢拿这件事情来麻烦您。越过邻国把远方的郑国作为(秦国的)东部边邑,您知道这是困难的,(您)为什么要灭掉郑国而给邻国增加土地呢?邻国的势力雄厚了,您秦国的势力也就相对削弱了。如果您放弃围攻郑国而把它当做东方道路上接待过客的主人,出使的人来来往往,(郑国可以随时)供给他们缺少的东西,对您也没有什么害处。而且您曾经给予晋惠公恩惠,惠公曾经答应给您焦、瑕两座城池。(然而)惠公在早上渡过黄河回国,在晚上就修筑防御工事,这是您知道的。晋国,怎么会满足呢?(现在它)已经在东边使郑国成为它的边境,又想要扩大它西边的边界。如果不使秦国土地亏损,将从哪里得到他贪求的土地呢?削弱秦国对晋国有利,希望您考虑这件事!”秦伯心悦诚服,就与郑国签订了盟约。派遣杞子、逢孙、杨孙守卫郑国,于是秦国就撤军了。

子犯请求袭击秦军。晋文公说:“不行!假如没有那人(秦伯)的力量,我是不会到这个地步的。依靠别人的力量而又反过来损害他,这是不仁义的;失掉自己的同盟者,这是不明智的;用混乱相攻(的局面)取代联合一致(的局面),这是不符合武德的。我们还是回去吧!”晋军也离开了郑国。

4.《晋灵公不君》

晋灵公不行君道,大量征收赋税来满足奢侈的生活。他从高台上用弹弓射行人,观看他们躲避弹丸的样子。厨师没有把熊掌炖烂,他就把厨师

杀了,放在筐里,让官女们用车载经过朝廷。大臣赵盾和士季看见露出的死人手,便询问他被杀的原因,并为晋灵公的无道而忧虑。他们准备规劝晋灵公,士季说:“如果您去进谏而国君不听,那就没有人能接着进谏了。让我先去规劝,他不接受,您就接着去劝。”士季去见晋灵公时往前走了三次,到了屋檐下,晋灵公才抬头看他,并说:“我已经知道自己的过错了,打算改正。”士季叩头回答说:“哪个人能不犯错误呢,犯了错误能够改正,没有比这更大的好事了。《诗·大雅,荡》说:‘没有谁向善没一个开始,但很少能坚持到底。’如果这样,那么弥补过失的人就太少了。您如能始终坚持向善,那么国家就有了保障,而不止是臣子们有了依靠。《诗·大雅·烝民》又说: ‘周宣王有了过失,只有仲山甫来弥补。’这是说周宣王能补救过失。国君能够弥补过失,君位就不会失去了。” 可是晋灵公仍然没有改正。赵盾又多次劝谏,使晋灵公感到厌烦,晋灵公便派鉏麑去刺杀赵盾。鉏麑一大早就去了赵盾的家,只见卧室的门开着,赵盾穿戴好礼服准备上朝,时间还早,他和衣坐着打盹儿。鉏麑退了出来,感叹地说:“时刻不忘记恭敬国君(指按时上朝),真是百姓的靠山啊。杀害百姓的靠山,这是不忠;背弃国君的命令,这是失信。不忠不信中有一样,还不如去死!”于是,鉏麑一头撞在槐树上死了。

秋天九月,晋灵公请赵盾喝酒,事先埋伏下武士,准备杀掉赵盾。赵盾的车夫提弥明发现了这个阴谋,快步走上殿堂,说:“臣下陪君王宴饮,酒过三巡还不告退,就不合礼仪了。”于是他扶起赵盾走下殿堂。晋灵公唤出了猛犬来咬赵盾。提弥明徒手上前搏斗,打死了猛犬。赵盾说:“不用人而用狗,即使凶猛,又有什么用!”他们两人与埋伏的武士边打边退。结果,提弥明为赵盾战死了。

当初,赵盾到首阳山打猎,住在翳桑。他看见有个叫灵辄的人晕倒了,便去问他的病情。灵辄说:“我已经三天没吃东西了。”赵盾给他东西吃,他留下了一半。赵盾询问原因,灵辄说:“我给贵族做仆人已经三年了,不知道家中老母是否活着。现在离家近了,请允许我把这一半留给她。”赵盾让他把食物吃完,另外给他准备了一篮饭和肉,放在口袋里给他。不久灵辄做了晋灵公的武士,他在搏杀中把武器倒过来抵挡晋灵公手下的人,使赵盾得以脱险。赵盾问他为什么这样做,他回答说:“我就是在翳桑的饿汉。”赵盾再问他的姓名和住处,他没有回答就退走了。赵盾自己也逃亡了。

九月二十六日,赵穿在桃园杀掉了晋灵公。赵盾还没有走出国境的山界,听到灵公被杀便回来了。晋国太史董狐记载道:“赵盾弑杀了他的国君。”他还把这个说法拿到朝廷上公布。赵盾说: “不是这样。”董狐说:“您身为正卿,逃亡而不出国境,回来后又不讨伐叛贼,不是您杀了国君又是谁呢?”赵盾说:“哎!《诗经》中 说:‘由于我怀念祖国,反而自己找来了忧患。’这话大概说的是我吧。”

孔子说:“董狐是古代的好史官,记载史事的原则是直言不讳。赵盾是古代的好大夫,因为史官的记事原则而蒙受了弑君的恶名。可惜啊,如果他出了国境,就会避免弑君之名了。”

赵盾派赵穿到成周去迎接晋国公子黑臀,把他立为国君。十月初三,公子黑臀去朝拜了武公庙。

5.《鞌之战》

公元前589年六月十七日,齐、晋双方军队在鞍摆开阵势。邴夏为齐侯驾车,逢丑父当为戎右(古代战车,将领居左,御者居中。如果将领是君主或主帅则居中,御者居左。负责保护协助将领的人居右)。晋国的解张为郤克驾车,郑丘缓当戎右。齐侯说:“我姑且消灭了这些人再吃早饭。”不给马披上甲就驱马奔驰(之:指驾车的马)。郤克被箭射伤,血流到了鞋上,没有中断擂鼓,说:“我受重伤了(古代病重、伤重、饥饿、劳累过度造成体力难以支持,都叫‘病’)。”解张说:“从一开始交战,箭就射进了我的手和肘,我折断射中的箭杆继续驾车,左边的车轮都被我的血染成了黑红色,我哪敢说受伤?您(‘吾子’比‘子’更亲切些)忍著点吧!”郑丘缓说:“从一开始接战,如果遇到地势不平,我必定下去推车,您难道知道这些吗?不过您确实伤势很重难以支持了。”解张说:“军队的耳朵和眼睛,都集中在我们的鼓声和战旗,前进后退都要听从它。这辆车上只要还有一个人镇守住它,战事就可以成功。怎么能由于伤痛而败坏了国君的大事呢?穿上盔甲,手执兵器,本来就抱定了必死的决心,伤痛还不至于死,您(还是)努力指挥战斗吧!”解张将右手所持的辔绳并握于左手,腾出右手接过郤克的鼓槌擂鼓。张侯所驾的马狂奔起来(由于单手持辔无法控制),晋军跟随他们。齐军崩溃。晋军追赶齐军,绕着华不注山追了三遍。

韩厥梦见子舆(韩厥父,当时已去世)对自己说:“次天早晨避开战车左右两侧!”因此(韩厥)在战车当中驾车追赶齐侯。邴夏说:“射那个驾车的,是个贵族。”齐侯说:“称他为贵族又去射他,这不合于礼。”(按,乃齐侯愚蠢之举)射他左边的人,坠落车下;射他右边的人,倒在车里。(晋军)将军綦毋张(晋大夫,綦毋氏,名张)失去战车,跟随韩厥,说:“请搭车。”跟在左边或右边,(韩厥)都用肘制止他,使他站在自己身后(按,韩厥由于梦中警告,所以这样做,以免綦毋张受害)。韩厥弯下身子,把倒在车中的戎右安放稳当。逢丑父和齐侯交换位置(这是逢丑父为了保护齐侯,乘韩厥低下身子安放戎右的机会与齐侯交换位置,以便不能逃脱时蒙混敌人)。将要到达华泉(泉水名,在华不注山下)时,(齐侯)两边的(中间两马为服,旁边两马为骖)被树枝等钩住。(昨天夜里)丑父睡在轏车(一种卧车)里,有蛇从他身底出现,以臂击蛇,手臂受伤却隐瞒了伤情(按,这是为了交代丑父之所以不能下来推车而补叙的头天夜里的事)。所以不能推车而被追上。韩厥手持拴马绳站在齐侯的马前(絷:拴缚马足的绳索),拜两拜,然后下跪,低头至地(这是臣下对君主所行的礼节。春秋时代讲究等级尊卑,韩厥对敌国君主也行臣仆之礼)。捧著一杯酒并加上一块玉璧向齐侯献上,说:“我们国君派我们这些臣下为鲁、卫两国求情,他说:‘不要让军队深入齐国的土地。’臣下不幸,正好在军队任职,没有地方逃避隐藏(我不能不尽职作战)。而且怕由于我的逃避会给两国的国君带来耻辱。臣下不称职地处在战士地位,冒昧地向您报告,臣下不才,代理这个官职是由于人才

缺乏充数而已(外交辞令:自己是不得已参加战斗,不能不履行职责,来俘获齐侯你)。”逢丑父(充齐侯)命令齐侯下车,往华泉去取水来给自己喝。郑周父驾著齐君的副车,宛茷担任副车的车右,载上齐侯使他脱身。韩厥献上逢丑父,郤克的将领手下要杀掉他。呼喊道:“从今以后不会有代替他的国君承担患难的,有一个在这里,还要被杀死吗?”郤克说,“一个人不畏惧用死来使他的国君免于祸患,我杀了他不吉利。赦免他,用来鼓励事奉国君的人。”于是赦免了逢丑父。

我喜欢出发。

凡是到达了的地方,都属于昨天。哪怕那山再青,那水再秀,那风再温柔。太深的流连便成了一种羁绊,绊住的不仅有双脚,还有未来。

怎么能不喜欢出发呢?没见过大山的巍峨,真是遗憾;见了大山的巍峨没见过大海的浩瀚仍然遗憾;见了大海的浩瀚没见过大漠的广袤,依旧遗憾;见了大漠的广袤没见过森林的神秘,还是遗憾。世界上有不绝的风景,我有不老的心情。

我自然知道,大山有坎坷,大海有浪涛,大漠有风沙,森林有猛兽。即便这样,我依然喜欢。

打破生活的平静便是另一番景致,一种属于年轻的景致。真庆幸,我还没有老。即便真老了又怎么样,不是有句话叫老当益壮吗?

于是,我还想从大山那里学习深刻,我还想从大海那里学习勇敢,我还想从大漠那里学习沉着,我还想从森林那里学习机敏。我想学着品味一种缤纷的人生。

Sometimes I have thought it would be an excellent rule to live each day as if we should die tomorrow.Such an attitude would emphasize sharply the values of life.We should live each day with a gentleness, a vigor, and a keenness of appreciation which are often lost when time stretches before us in the constant panorama of more days and months and years to come.There are those, of course, who would adopt the epicurean motto of “Eat, drink, and be merry,” most people would be chastened by the certainty of impending death.Most of us take life for granted.We know that one day we must die, but usually we picture that day as far in the future, when we are in buoyant health, death is all but unimaginable.We seldom think of it.The days stretch out in an endless vista.So we go about our petty task, hardly aware of our listless attitude towards life.The same lethargy, I am afraid, characterizes the use of our faculties and senses.Only the deaf appreciate hearing, only the blind realize the manifold blessings that lie in sight.Particularly does this observation apply to those who have lost sight and hearing in adult life.But those who have never suffered impairment of sight or hearing seldom make the fullest use of these blessed faculties.Their eyes and ears take in all sights and sound hazily, without concentration, and with little appreciation.It is the same old story of not being grateful for what we conscious of health until we are ill.I have often thought it would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind and deaf for a few days at some time during his early adult life.Darkness would make him more appreciative of sight;silence would teach him the joys of sound.Now and then I have tested my seeing friends to discover what they see.Recently I was visited by a very good friend who had just returned from a long walk in the woods, and I asked her what she had observed.“Nothing in particular,” she replied.I might have been incredulous had I not been accustomed to such responses, for long ago I became convinced that the seeing see little.How was it possible, I asked myself, to walk for an hour through the woods and see nothing worthy of note? Can we forge against these enemies, a grand and global alliance, north and south, east and west, that can assure a more fruitful life for all mankind? Will you join in that historic effort?
