In most colleges and universities , the examination is used as a chief means of deciding whether a student succeeds or fails in mastering a particular subject.Although it does the job quite effective, its side effects are also enormous.首先，考试造成教学水平下降lower。由于教师的好坏往往根据学生的考试成绩来判断，所以教师被迫训练学生应试技巧technique。而几乎没有什么课程是仅仅通过教授应试技巧就可以教好的。其次，考试最糟糕的副作用most unfavorable /undesirable effect is that „ 是使学生养成不良的学习习惯。由于考试成绩是衡量学生学习好坏的唯一标准criterion，学生只能被迫机械地死记硬背memorize mechanically，而不去rather than/instead of 进行创造性的思考。

To begin with, examinations lower the standards of teaching.Since teachers are judged by examination results, they are reduced to training their students in exam techniques.No subjects can be taught successfully merely through being approached with intent to take examinations.In addition, the most undesirable effect is that examinations encourage bad study habits.As the examination score is the only criterion for his academic performance, a student is driven to memorize mechanically rather than to think creatively.In fact, few of us admit that examinations can contribute anything really important to the students’ academic development.If that is the case, why can’t we make a change and devise something more effective and reliable than examination?
