Passage two
It is all very well to blame traffic jams, the cost of petrol and the quick pace of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming terrible. You might tolerate the rude and in considerate driver, but nowadays the well-mannered drivers is the exception to the rule.Perhaps we need a campaign calling for “Be Kind to Other Drivers”, otherwise, it may get completely out of hand.Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense too.It takes the most cool-headed and good-tempered of the driver to resist the temptation to revenge when treated rudely. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards relieving the tension of driving.A friendly nod or wave in response to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of goodwill.Tolerance is absolutely necessary in modern traffic condition. But such politeness is very rare today. Many drivers nowadays don’t even seem to recognize politeness when they see it.A veteran driver, whose manners are faultless, told me that it would help if motorist learn to drive correctly into traffic streams without causing the total blockages 拥堵 that may give rise to bad temper.Unfortunately, modern motorists can’t even learn to drive, let alone be well-mannered on the road.Years ago the experts warned us that the car-ownership explosion would demand a lot more give-and-take平等互让 from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.21.According to the passage, troubles on the road are mainly caused by ______.A.people’s attitude towards driver
B.the rhythm of modern life C.traffic condition
D.the behavior of the driver 22.The sentence “You might tolerate the rude and in considerate driver, but nowadays the well-mannered drivers is the exception to the rule.” Implies that ____.A.our society is unjust to well-mannered driver.B.rude drivers can be met only occasionally C.nowadays impolite drivers constitute the majority of motorists D.the well-mannered motorists cannot tolerate the rude driver.23.By “good sense”(para 2.)the writer means ______.A.the driver’s prompt response to difficult conditions B.the driver’s ability to understand and react politely C.the driver’s tolerance of bad road conditions D.the driver’s acknowledge of traffic regulations 24.Experts have long pointed out that in the face of car-ownership explosion, _____.A.drivers should be ready to yield to one another.B.road users should make more sacrifices C.drivers will suffer a great loss if they pay no respect to others D.drivers should have more communication among others 25.In the writer’s opinion, ______.A.drivers should apply road politeness properly B.strict traffic regulations are badly needed C.rude and inconsiderate drivers should be punished D.drivers should try their best to avoid traffic jams Passage three
What do we mean by a satisfactory standard of living? Obviously, it must include the basic necessities of life such as food, clothing and shelter. To get these necessities on regular basis, a person must have a reliable income. But we have other needs which would probably also be included as basic, such as health and education facilities. We may think of all these as our needs.Yet most of us would be far from satisfied if we had nothing more than these which are supplied for us.We all enjoy extra income to spend on things like books, sports or hobbies.Sometimes we save some of this extra income to pay for future expense of this type on holidays. So we must add our wants to our basic needs. Our standards of living is the degree, to which these needs and wants are satisfied. But as time goes on, what we think of as our basic needs changes.Twenty years ago a television would have been a luxury, and still is in some countries now.Even now we cannot say it is a need in the same sense as food, clothing and shelter.Yet if most of the people of a country have one, it comes to be accepted as a need.It is possible therefore to have food, clothing and shelter and still be poor by the standard of our own country.26.What we need in life is divided into ______ according to this article A.the basic necessities and luxury B.many kinds of need such as food, clothing and houses C.four groups the basic necessities, luxury, reliable income and future expense D.the basic necessities and reliable income 27.A person who gets the basic necessities must ____ according to the writer.A.have a reliable income

解析:从这句话:a dog is loyal to master and consequently wants him to show proof of his affection.
(二)The young people who talk of the village as being “dead” are talking nothing but nonsense, as in their hearts they must surely know. No, the village is not dead. There is more life in it now than there ever was.But it seems that “village life” is dead.Gone for ever.It began to decline about a hundred years ago. When many girls left home to go into service in town many miles away, and men also left home in increasing numbers in search of work, and home was where work was. There are still a number of people alive today who can remember what “village life” meant in the early years of the present century. It meant finding your entertainment in the village of within walking distance of it.It meant housewives tied to the home all day and every day.It meant going to bed early to save lamp-oil and coal. Then came the First World War and the Second World War.After each war, new ideas, new attitudes, new trades and occupations were revealed to villagers. The long-established order of society was no longer taken for granted.Electricity and the motorcar were steadily operating to make “village life” and “town life” almost alike. Now with the highly developed science and technology and high-level social welfare for all, there is no point whatever in talking any longer about “village life.” It is just life, and a better life. Finally, if we have any doubts about the future, or about the many changes which we have seen in our lives, we have only to look in at the school playground any mid-morning;or see the children as they walk homeward in little groups.Obviously there children are better fed, better clothed, better educated, healthier, prettier and happier than any generation of children that ever before walked the village street.1.By saying that village is not dead, but “village life” is dead, the writer suggests that _____.A.those young people who talk of the village as being “dead” are wrong B.the two statements are against each other C.“village life” today is rather uninteresting
D.“village life” today is no longer like what it used to be
2.It was _____ that “village life” began to take a sharp turn.3 A.about a century ago B.during the two world wars C.with electricity and motorcars introduced into the village D.only recently
3.As is suggested in paragraph 2, villagers in the past _____.A.lived a simpler life than villagers today B.knew fewer people than villagers today C.found it difficult to enjoy themselves D.liked to wash themselves with cold water
4.The expression “...there is no point whatever in talking about...” in paragraph 3 means that _____.A.there is no end to the talking about...B.it is harmful to talk about...C.it is not meaningless to talk about...D.there is no reason for talking about...5.From the passage we can see that the writer’s attitude toward “village life” is ____
A.positive
B.negative
C.neutral
D.unclear 【难点】
1.nothing but...: 除了,仅仅 2.the present century: 本世纪 3.tied to the home: 被束缚在家 4.reveal: 展现,显露
5.take sth. We mist not take it for granted that...:
3.A

A Figures indicate an ever-increasing crime rate, but it is only too easy to imagine"It will never happen to me".(1)Unfortunately, statistics show that it really can happen to you and, if you live in a large city, you run twice the risk of being a victim.B Research has also been done into the way people’s behavior changes in a number of small, apparently unimportant ways when they lie.(2)It has been found that if they are sitting down at the same time, they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual.(3)To the trained observer they are saying I wish I were somewhere else now.C Todays’s wealthy parents perhaps realize their riches can be more of a heavy load than a happiness to their children.(4)So the first thing for them to consider is to ensure that their families are as rich in love as they are in money.(5)D Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do.It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return.(6)In addition, life is always presenting new things to the child---things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well-known.But a child has his pains: He is not so free to do what he wishes to do;he is continually being told not to do things, or being punished for what he has done wrong.(7)E Every country tends to accept its own way of life as being the normal one and to praise or criticize others as they are similar to or different from it.(8)And unfortunately, our picture of the people and the way of life of other countries is often a distorted one.F Like the press in most other countries, American newspapers range from the “sensational”, which feature crime, sex and rumor, to the serious, which focus on factual news and the analysis of world events. But with few exceptions American newspapers try to entertain as well as give information, for they have to compete with television.(9)As in other democratic countries American newspapers can be either responsible or irresponsible, but it is generally accepted that the American press serves its country well and that it has more than once bravely uncovered political scandals(丑闻)or crimes,(10)for instance, the Watergate Affair. The newspapers drew the attention of the publi 7 c to the fears of the Vietnam War.G Five hundred years ago, news of important happenings-battles lost and won, kings of rulers overthrown of killed-took months and even years to travel from one country to another. The news passed by word of mouth and was never accurate.Today we can read in our newspapers of important events that occur in far away countries on the same day they happen.(11)H Actually, the world’s birth rate is falling. But so is death rate, as medical advances have made it possible for man to live longer than before.(12)Such advances have also reduced baby death rate.Unless population growth is reduced, the world population may reach 12 billion in a century.(13)Is the earth capable of providing a good life for so large a population? I The condition most helpful to spending appears to be price stability. If prices have been stable and people consider that they are reasonable, they are likely to buy. Thus, it appears that the common business policy of maintaining stable prices is based on a correct understanding of consumer psychology(心理学).(14)J Then came the First World War and the Second World War.After each war, new ideas, new attitudes, new trades and occupations were revealed to villagers.(15)The long-established order of society was no longer taken for granted.Electricity and the motorcar were steadily operating to make “village life” and “town life” almost alike. Now with the highly developed science and technology and high-level social welfare for all, there is no point whatever in talking any longer about “village life.”(16)It is just life, and that a better life.

6.B
get sb to do sth.
7. C
where = in which, “where…., there are….” 指"哪儿有...,就有...".
8. B
distinguish right from wrong
9. C would rather +句子(过去时)(虚拟语气):I’d rather you didn’t tell anyone what I said. I’d rather you came with me.
而except that和except when后面接宾语从句。 She knew nothing about his journey except that he was likely to be away for three months. (that 在宾语从句中只起连接作用)He was a man of fine character in all points except that he was rather timid.
“look for”:寻找。Will you help me look for my gloves? I looked in my purse and discovered I’d only got a five-pound note. He has looked after his elderly parents for many years.
It was difficult to make out what was said over the loudspeaker in the square. make for: 走向,朝…前进。It’s late, we’d better make for home. Make for the beach! He went round making sure that all the windows were closed. make over: 翻新、改造。The house has been made over into a school. Human nature can’t be made over so easily.
14.A
16.A by far强调比较级或最高级,在强调比较级时,比较级前也要用the.17.D feel like doing sth.
18.A
注意:be used to sth/doing sth 和 get used to sth./doint sth.
19.B
except for “除了...
23. C
