In the English-speaking world, it is customary to sing the song “Happy Birthday to You” to the birthday person.Do you know that it was originally written as a song to greet students in the morning? Two American kindergarten teachers, Mildred Hill and her sister Patty Hill wrote the song.In 1893, Mildred, who studied music, came up with the melody and Patty added some lyric to it and the song became “Good Morning to All”, which they sang every morning to their students. And the lyrics ran like this: “Good morning to you.Good morning to you.Good morning, dear children.Good morning to all.”
Later the title of the song was known as “Good Morning to You” when it was used for children to sing to their teacher. And the third and fourth lines became “Good morning, dear teacher.Good morning to you.”
In 1924, the song appeared in a book of music edited by Robert Coleman. And a second verse, “Happy Birthday to You,” was added to it.But it is unclear who supplied the words to the second verse. This second verse quickly became more popular than the first, and within a short time of the book’s publication, the song was known to all as “Happy Birthday to You.” And by mid-1930s it was used frequently in movies, radio shows, and Broadway musicals without the Hill family’s permission.A third sister, Jessica Hill, decided to act on behalf of her elder sisters. She filed a suit to prove that “Happy Birthday to You” was their song with different lyrics. She won in 1934, and now every time “Happy Birthday to You” is sung publicly, the Hill family gets paid.Step Three Watch and Discussion 1.Watch a video concerning the Diwali celebaration in India 1)Look at the pictures on Page 42, tell us what can you see? 2)Learning the new words and expressions, then make predictions based on the background knowledge we have just menetioned.3)Watch the video twice, then finish the exerccises on Page 43.SCRIPT

vulnerable barrier
wander advertisement
statistics on the latch
pry put up
Answer: A burglary is reported every 15 seconds in the United States.Statistics show burglars entered more than 2 million homes last year.Actually it is almost impossible to keep a determined burglar out.All you can do is discourage him for a few minutes, thus exposing him to police patrols or those wandering around.Common sense tells us that lighting is a barrier to criminal activity.A light should be fixed in the doorway and switched on at night.Believe it or not, some people, particularly children who happen to be the last to come in, leave their doors on the latch at night.Doors of hollow core, even when locked, are vulnerable to break-ins.Thus doors of solid core or steel are much preferred as they make it difficult for the burglar to pry open.If you decide to buy an alarm device, be sure to ask for its signs and put them up on both windows and doors. Finally, a word of warning--when you travel, make sure that you have a trusted neighbor collect and keep all the deliveries of newspapers and mail until you return. This is because a collection of newspapers and mail on the front doorstep or in your mailbox is an advertisement that no one is home.

Answer: The Extraterrestrial has been a topic of interest to experts and laymen /nonprofessionals alike.Researchers of various nationalities and organizations are adopting different modes of investigation in search of them. Some make close observation of stars with extremely high level of rare, radioactive elements. They believe those elements result from extraterrestrial technology that is still beyond human wit to understand. Some try to isolate radio signals from the “noise” of the universe. And some claim that they have caught sight of extraterrestrials and can even describe their appearance in detail.Researchers work up the complicated data they collect into a series 2/4
of reports and books.Although no definite answer has yet been found, the explorers' hope shows no sign of fading out on account of their frustrations and they hold to the belief that their hard efforts will prove worthwhile.
