In recent years the government has spent a large sum of money in improving housing but the shortage of housing is one of the most serious problems facing many big cities in China. We’ve discussed heatedly the topic “How to Solve the Housing Problem in Big Cities.”

Some of us suggest building more high-rise apartments. For one thing, it is cheaper to build above ground than below. For another, enough sunshine is available, which is beneficial to our health. On the contrary, some students are against the proposal because they think living underground for a long time will do harm to people's health.Above all, people are unwilling to live underground with artificial lighting and they prefer to live above ground to enjoy the sunshine.I am in favor of the former opinion. There is less noise or pollution in high-rise apartments, what’s more, we can appreciate wonderful scenery, so it is comfortable to live overground.Although there may be some other ways to solve the housing shortage problem, I believe to build more high-rise apartments is one of the promising solutions to the housing problem. Text 1 M: Would you mind if I borrowed your car? W: Well, when exactly? M: Until Monday or Tuesday of next week.W: I’m sorry, but my family is going out this weekend.Text 2 W: How do you feel about your moving to Los Angeles, Jack? M: Well, I’m really looking forward to it.I can’t fall asleep at night these days.Text 3 W: What’s wrong, Carl? You look terrible.M: Miss Brown, I’ve had a headache all day.And my nose is blocked.W: You might have caught a cold. You don’t have to come to school tomorrow.Stay home and have a rest.Text 4 W: We need a new refrigerator. This one hardly holds our food for a week.M: In that case, we’ll go to town this weekend, instead of the movie.Text 5 M: Excuse me, could you tell me when the next train for Chicago leaves? W: Well, trains for Chicago leave every 3 hours. You just missed the 8:30 train by 10 minutes, I’m afraid.Text 6 M: Mom, may I work at the zoo? W: Work? Where? M: We have a chance to work at the zoo for the whole holiday. All my classmates are going. Can I? Please? W: Sounds interesting.M: Does that mean you are letting me go? W: Yes.But how about a favor from you in return when breakfast is over? Go and practice cleaning cages by starting with that cage you call a bedroom!Text 7 M: You’re Molly, right? Alice asked me to look after you today.W: Thanks, Dr.Laver.I’m not sure of what to do the first day at work.M: Don’t worry. Now, Molly, let’s get started right now.W: Right, doctor.I’ve never had to look after such young babies before.I’m quite nervous really.M: Nothing to it.Just pick up a baby and have a nice little chat, to make it feel comfortable.W: Ah, hello there, Babyface! What have you been up to today? M: See? You’re a natural.I’m sure you’ll make a lovely mother one day, Molly.Text 8 M: Biology department, Webster speaking.W: Hello Professor Webster. This is Janet Hill calling.I live two doors down from Professor Don Williams.Don asked me to call you, because he has got a terrible cold and lost his voice.M: Lost his voice? Oh, I’m sorry to hear that.Is there anything I can do for him? W: Well, he has a class this afternoon from 2:30 to 4:00, and he won’t be able to teach it.M: Does he want me to try to find somebody else to teach the class? W: No, not exactly. What he wants to do is get someone to go in for him, just to pass back the mid-term exam papers.M: His class is at 2:30, you say? Well, I’m free at that time and I could do it for him. What room is his class in? W: Carter Hall, Room 214.You can get the papers in his office.M: OK, that’s fine.W: Thank you very much, Professor Webster.M: That’s all right.Thank you, and hope Don will get better soon.Text 9 M: So, you’ve applied for the Saturday position, right? W: Yes, I have.13 M: Can you tell me what made you reply to our job offer? W: Well, I was looking for a part-time job to help me through college.M: Do you know exactly what you would be doing as a shop assistant? W: Well, I imagine I would be preparing the shop for business, helping shoppers, and keeping a check on the supplies in the store.M: What sort of student do you regard yourself as? W: I suppose I’m a reasonable student.I passed most of my exams, and I enjoy studying subjects that interest me.M: Now, do you have any questions for me about the job? W: Yes, could you tell me what hours I’d have to work?

M: We open at 9:00 But you would be expected to arrive at 8:30.We close at 6:00 p.m., and you would be able to leave 10 minutes later.I think I have asked you everything I wanted to.Thank you for coming along to the interview.Text 10 In today’s program, we are talking about London Underground trains. The quickest way to get around London is no doubt ‘the tube’, London’s way of saying the Underground train. The tube is made up of twelve lines, each bearing a name and a color on the tube map.For example, the Central Line is red.And as its name suggests, it runs from east to west, taking in central London. The Circle Line is yellow, and is the only line which runs in a complete circle.About 2.5 million people use the tube each day.If you want to travel fast around London, taking the tube will get you to wherever you want quicker than bus or taxi.Trains generally leave every 3 or 4 minutes, less frequently at weekends and late at night. There are maps at each station, as well as inside each train, to make sure that you can see where you are going and that you are on the right train. If you find yourself going in the wrong direction, simply get off at the next station and cross the platform to the other side.Every train will show its direction on the front of the train. So, it is a good idea to look at the train as it is coming into the station.

would disappear for months and then appear after secret cosmetic surgery looking younger, prettier, and thinner.Over time, cosmetic surgery has become accepted and even encouraged in some circles.Today there are even television reality shows about it.Some of the more popular forms of cosmetic surgery are liposuction(抽脂术), in which excessive fat is sucked out of the body with a tube and vacuum device;laser facial resurfacing, which smooths lines on the face around the eyes and mouth and eliminates facial blemishes(瑕疵);and hair replacement surgery, which fills in balding areas using a patient's own hair. There are many more forms of cosmetic surgery, including variations of these.Anyone interested in cosmetic surgery should consider the risks and remember that it is, ultimately, surgery. Not all procedures come out exactly the way doctors and patients foresee, and recovery is just like any other surgery, complete with pain and the possibility of infection(感染).While cosmetic surgery is an option, patients should choose doctors wisely, obtain several references, and keep realistic expectations.25.Which kind of person doesn't need a cosmetic surgery? A.Jack-In-the-Box-Drive-thru Restaurant B.Biggest Drive-thru Smile Ever C.You Make a Difference through Effort D.Don't hold back Your Smile D If you've ever been to a social gathering, you might feel awkward and uncomfortable. While social gatherings can be very enjoyable, especially when you are surrounded by people whose company you enjoy, there are social events that you sometimes find yourself wishing you were someplace else.Such occasions can sometimes be the cause of much anxiety and self-consciousness.You may even feel like everyone else is having a good time except for you.Yet the truth is that everyone has felt shy and awkward on occasion. One of the best ways to overcome self-consciousness or get past your feelings of shyness at social gatherings is to focus on the people around you.If you can remember that other people might also be feeling awkward or shy, you might find the thought of speaking to them less overwhelming. The next time there is a social event you feel nervous about attending, you may want to try this exercise: Spend some time with your eyes closed and breathe deeply. When you feel ready, create your own zone of comfort by visualizing yourself surrounded in a warm white light that is protective yet accepting of others.Imagine people at the event being drawn to you because of the open and warm feelings that you are showing. When you arrive at the event, take a moment to spread this same light of loving acceptance to everyone around you.Smile and greet people warmly.Try going up to someone who is standing alone and introduce yourself. When you show acceptance and openness, people can't help but respond to you in kind.Focusing on how we can make other people at a social gathering feel at ease can help us forget about our own insecurities. The next time you attend a social gathering, invite people to join you in your zone of comfort that you have so lovingly and intentionally created.Let yourself enjoy being encircled in the warmth of their friendships.32.In the author's opinion, people feel awkward at a social gathering because A.the atmosphere is unpleasant B.they don't like the people there C.they are too proud to talk with others D.they may feel they are different from others 33.The underlined word “visualizing” in Paragraph 2 probably means A.introducing B.persuading C.imagining D.forcing 34.If you feel uncomfortable about attending a social event, the author advises you to _.A.invite some friends B.arrive ahead of time C.talk with others nonstop D.be open and warm to others 35.What is the text mainly about?

28.Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A.From India to Australia.C.In Search of New Friends.B.Living in a New Country.D.Turning Trash to Treasure.C As the new semester begins, millions of college students across the country are trying hard to remember how best to write a paper or, more likely, how best to delay that paper.Procrastination is the thief of time and a lot of students suffer from it.They can spend whole days in the library doing nothing but staring into space, eating snacks, surfing the Internet, watching videos and looking at their pretty peers sitting around them, who, most likely, are doing nothing either.Paralyzed(麻痹;瘫痪)by their habit to procrastinate, they write micro blogs about their fears, asking their online friends if they sometimes have the same issue. But this does nothing to solve their problems.According to a recent report by the BBC, 95 percent of us procrastinate at some point and 20 percent of the world’s population are procrastinators, complicating their lives with their continual delaying of tasks.Procrastinators like to find excuses to justify their behavior, but BBC columnist Rowan Pelling says they are all wrong. Many procrastinators tell themselves they are perfectionists who work best under pressure.Pelling says this is nonsense, as work done at the last minute is more likely to have mistakes than work done on time. She says the behavior of procrastinators often makes them feel flustered(慌张的)and ashamed, inconveniences others, and annoys loved ones.Fortunately, social scientists have made tireless efforts to understand this behavioral shortcoming and offer strategies(策略)to control it.Piers Steel, a Canadian social scientist and author of The Procrastination Equation, believes humankind is “designed” to procrastinate.Nevertheless, he suggests a couple of good ways to get through the task at hand. The first one is obvious: Break the task down into small pieces and work your way through them methodically(有条不紊地).The second is clever: Give a trusted friend a sum of money and tell them that if you don’t complete the task you have undertaken by a specific time, they can keep it or donate it to a cause you hate.29.What does the underlined word “Procrastination” in the second paragraph refer to? A.A bad habit of putting work or tasks off.B.A thief who steals time and money in college.C.A college student who learns nothing.D.A study way of doing nothing in the library.30.Which of the following statements is true according to the text? A.College students can have their papers written if they delay them.B.Many students don’t know what to do in the library.C.20% of the procrastinators make their life complicated.D.Students can’t solve their procrastination by writing micro blogs.31.According to Rowan Pelling, we can learn that procrastinators ________.A.can find reasonable excuses for their behavior B.are able to work best under pressure C.are more likely to avoid mistakes at work D.may upset themselves and their loved ones more frequently 32.Which of the following may Piers Steel support? A.Human beings are not born to be procrastinators.B.Give your trusted friend money and ask him to help you finish your tasks.C.Complete your tasks or work step by step.D.You can’t control procrastination but you can avoid it.D Are some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experiences? Strangely enough, the answer to both these questions is yes.To some extent(程度)our intelligence is given to us at birth, and special education can never make a genius(天才)out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits of a person’s intelligence are fixed at birth, but whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts can be supported in a number of ways.It is easy to say that intelligence is, to some extent, something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from the population, it is likely that their degrees of intelligence will be completely different. If on the other hand we take two identical twins, they will very likely be as intelligent as each other.Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.Imagine that now we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We would soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this indicates that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all, are likely to have similar degrees of intelligence.33.By using the example that two people closer in blood relationship are closer in intelligence that writer wants to prove ________.A.intelligence is given at birth B.intelligence can be developed by environment C.intelligence can be developed by experience D.education plays an important part in the development of education 34.A child who lives in rich and varied surroundings turns out higher in intelligence because ________.A.his family is rich and therefore can afford to develop his intelligence B.he can break the limits of intelligence fixed at birth C.his family is rich and provides him with various healthy food D.these surroundings are likely to help him reach the limits of their intelligence 35.The best title for this passage might be ________.A.Birth and Environment C.Intelligence
