由于汉英文化存在着截然不同的传统和风俗习惯,人们的生活方式、思维方式、价值观念、语言习惯等都有很大的差别,许多日常行为在两种语言的交际活动中也存在明显的文化差异。本文旨在通过对比分析汉英文化中褒奖行为的异同点及常见的语用失误,使大家进一步了解语言只有在一定的文化背景下及语境中被正确使用,才能体现出它们的交际价值,这对我们的日常交际、英语教学及语言研究有极大的启示和帮助。

一、引言

语言是文化的载体,是文化的一个密不可分的组成部分,它既反映文化,也受文化的影响。语言使用除了受到结构规则,即语音、词汇、语法等的制约,还会受到使用规则的制约,这儿的使用规则即指语言所属的社会文化,社会文化决定语言使用是否得体。由于文化的迁移,外语学习者常常会将自己的文化模式套入新的语言文化中,而“文化既有其统一性、延续性和共有性,又有其差异性和变化性。”(胡文仲,1985)

褒奖行为这种社会现象存在于每个社会群体,存在于各种不同的语言文化中,不同层面、不同程度地反映着人们的交际活动,它不仅可以缩短交际者之间的距离,而且可以联络感情,巩固和加强交际者之间的团结,起到社会润滑油的作用。美国语言学家pomerantz指出,褒奖语是一种支撑性行为(supportive action),也是一种评价性行为(assessment action),也就是说,称赞语不仅有称赞的性质,也有评价的性质。下面让我们来探讨一下汉英文化在褒奖这一言语行为上的相似点及文化差异,并对由此产生的语用失误作一分析,这样可以使我们更好地了解在跨汉英文化交际时如何恰如其分地称赞对方并知道怎样对对方的称赞做出正确得体的语言回应,这对我们的日常交际、英语教学及语言研究都有极其重要的作用。

二、汉英文化中褒奖行为的相似点

1.注重礼貌待人

言语交际中所体现的礼貌程度,在一定意义上标志着一个社会的文明程度,反映着一个民族的精神风貌。中国是文明古国,礼仪之邦,在人际交往中,人们极为重视谦虚、恭敬的态度和礼貌的语言。

英语文化中也充分体现了对言语行为中礼貌原则的体现。利奇(leech,1983)在前人研究的基础上,从语用学和人际交往中修辞的角度,对交际活动中的礼貌原则进行了新的归纳和分类,即由得体准则(tact maxim)、慷慨准则(generosity maxim)、赞誉准则(approbation maxim)、谦虚准则(modesty maxim)、一致准则(agreement maxim)和同情准则(sympathy maxim)等六个准则构成。

后来的一些东西方学者相继从不同角度对言语交际中的礼貌现象进行了探讨,使礼貌成为语用学研究的重要课题之一。礼貌原则反映到行为中,在称赞、感谢等表达上,汉语和英语存在着不少相似之处。如,(1)你做的饭真好吃。

(2)thank you for your help.2.提倡谦虚态度

一般认为谦虚是中国文化所具有的美德,但是,在英语文化中也是一个重要的内容。在汉语的谦虚表达中,对于来自对方的称赞和评价,一般不采用全面赞同的应答,而采取“缩小规模”来表示同意的策略。如,(1)甲:你刚才唱歌唱得真好听。

乙:是吗?不过我觉得我没大放开。

(2)a: you have a nice one-room apartment.b: yes.the rent is expensive.it is a burden.说话人通过赞同、认可来称赞对方的行为,听话人通过谦虚、礼貌的态度来应答,从而创造出“和”的气氛,这是汉英语言在会话中的典型表现。褒奖行为带上了社交礼节的特点,在日常生活中维持了人们之间的圆满关系。

3.讲究协调和谐

很多东方国家包括中国有史以来在社会结构上一直是家族式的,形成一种聚合模式,其特点是从众意识较

强,不想突出个人,注重与他人“和为贵”。我们不难发现在学校里,有些说话讲究艺术性的老师批评学生时很讲策略,如你的文章写得很好,要是字再漂亮些就更棒了。老师把批评书法和称赞文章结合起来,减弱了批评的味道,学生容易接受,对维护和谐的师生关系起到了良好作用。中国有以“和”为轴心的文化,中国人常常无意识地、微妙地运用这种“和”文化来相互理解,彼此达到和谐的关系。

英语国家大都是异族混居的国家,成为一种离散模式,其特征表现为相互疏远,讲究个体独处。不过,他们的社会也并非没有在“协调”上下功夫。西方语言哲学家及语用学家格赖斯(grice)在1968年就提出了会话所需要的四个协调原则:(1)说直话,不要说没有十分把握的话;(2)掌握信息数量,不要给予超出所需的信息;(3)说有关内容的话,不要离题;(4)说话要明快、简洁、条理清楚。这四个原则被认为是语言交际的一般会话原则。

三、汉英文化中褒奖行为的差异

1.褒奖方式的差异

一个美国学生和一个中国学生应邀去日本朋友家做客,虽然过后中国学生对美国学生说日本饭菜并不迎合他的口味,但在吃饭及做客后告别时,他却一直不停地在主人面前说饭菜如何地美味可口。美国学生觉得中国学生说了假话,让人听上去很虚伪。他认为如果是自己的话,他会说一些感谢的话,但同时也会率直地指出饭菜不合口味。对此,中国学生的解释是说饭菜可口是感谢的一种表达,并不是虚伪的恭维。

英语文化中,人们习惯把对对方的敬佩和感激用不同的言语行为表现出来,假使要称赞他们,也是采用评论性的、限制性的,而且是高姿态的称赞方式;而中国人面对同一对象时,其称赞、感谢的言辞是不带评价的、全面肯定的、低姿态的,往往被西方人看成过分谦虚了,是虚情假意、恭维奉承的表现。

2.褒奖范围的差异及不同观念

汉英文化中不同的传统和价值观念导致了褒奖范围的差异,在西方的文化背景下,宗教信仰、收入、年龄等都是需要避讳的话题,如我们对此类问题进行称赞会使话题陷入尴尬境地,影响双方的进一步交流。和英语中的褒奖话语相对比,汉语中出现频率较高的褒奖语涉及到对对方性格、内在品德及精神的赞美和钦佩,如常可以听到以下的寒暄语。

(1)你脾气真好,对孩子这么有耐心。

(2)你起得总这么早!

(3)你学习真努力!

传统和价值观念的不同还体现在对于同一褒奖点人们的不同观念。一种文化普遍认可或认为是具有价值的行为,在另一种文化中却得不到承认,或加以摈弃;一种文化认为是文明的、适宜的言语,在另一种文化中却被认为是落后的、无礼的行为。让我们对以下几个方面的话题进行探讨,对此会有比较深刻的理解。

①体重。这是一个在两种语言中出现频率都很高的话题。过去,中国人见面如果说对方“发福了”“胖了”是一种恭维,但现在人们的生活水平的提高带来了对健康及审美的需求,很多人反倒愿意听别人说自己“瘦了”,可我们仍不能否认,在传统文化的影响下,说对方“发福了”“胖了”仍含有恭维对方生活条件优越的含义,而说对方“瘦了”一般情况下也表达了对其身体状况的关切;在英语文化中却没有这种含义,人们把体重超标看作是不健康的标志,所以说对方胖会被理解成暗指对方体质下降,而说对方“瘦了”毫无疑问是句恭维话,②金钱。对中国人来说,称赞对方的家庭背景、经济状况是一种恭维,在很多情况下这种恭维还会带有羡慕的成分;在英语文化中则不然,人们更看重个人通过努力而得来的财富,这种观念在本杰明·富兰克林(benjamin franklin)的著作中得到了体现——“god helps those who help themselves”(自助者天助)。

③友谊。汉英两种文化背景下的人都重视友情,但中国人的人际关系取向以情感为中心,认为朋友,特别是好朋友之间应该互相帮助,互讲义气,所以我们常常会听到“真够意思”“够哥们”“够义气”这样的恭维,这在英语文化中是听不到的。以英语文化为背景的人际关系取向以工作、志趣和活动为中心,朋友关系中仍然强调独立、自主和竞争,相互之间没有义务和责任。所以,一个人如果没有给他身处困境中的朋友提供帮助是很正常、无可厚非的。

④外貌。中国女性在公开场合或丈夫在场时受到异性对自己外貌的褒奖时,多数人会觉得不好意思,有时

甚至会觉得不雅,有失体统;英语中人们对女性外貌、化妆和服装等的称赞是很普遍、很自然的,而且自由度很大,基本上不受年龄、地位、场合和熟识程度的限制。

⑤家庭成员。中国人倾向称赞对方的家庭成员,尤其是对方的孩子;英语文化背景下的人们倾向家庭成员之间互相称赞。之所以存在这种差异是因为中国人家庭观念浓厚,认为家庭和个人是一体的,所以家庭成员之间互相称赞有“自我表扬”之嫌,而称赞对方的家人事实上就是在称赞听话者本人;而多数西方人自我观念意识强,这种独立性往往使他们对自己的家庭成员不吝赞美。如,(1)你女儿长得真漂亮!

英语商务信函中礼貌的表现

一、引言

21世纪是经济日益全球化的世纪,中国与世界各国的交往日益频繁,国际贸易事业发展迅猛。但随着科学技术的发展,国际间的贸易往来更多地使用传真与电子邮件来传递商务信函。因而,英语商务信函成为一种便宜而有效的沟通媒介。“一封好的商务信函,可以带来截然不同的效果,使你所要表达的意思焕然一新,给对方深刻的印象,使您的职业道路畅通无阻。一封好的商务信函有助于促进和发展同客户的关系,在促进达成新的业务方面起着积极的作用。”

二、英语商务信函的定义

英语商务信函是一种最常见的商业联系媒介,它是一种通过电脑或者打字机“书信”来完成的人际间交往。实际上商务信函是一种“推销”函,写信人总是在推销着什么,可能是一种产品、一项服务、一项专利、一个观念,甚至是推销自己或树立自己所在公司的形象等。

三、英语商务信函写作原则

1、礼貌原则(courteousness)

商业信件要简洁明了,既要注意信件的措词得体,又要符合商业信件礼貌周到的原则。写信时要注意礼节,不要盛气凌人,避免出现命令或粗鲁等不恰当的口吻。写信过程中除了多使用诸如please;your kind inquiry;I would appreciate it if you would等短语外,还需做到以下几点:语气要真诚、善解人意以及考虑周全;避免使用伤害、贬低的短语,如:your neglectful attitude;impatience;we deny your claim 等;避免使用含有性别歧视的词语,如 businessman;chairman 等。

2、正确原则(correctness)

正确性不仅仅指英语语法、标点符号和拼写,更重要的是书信的内容要叙述正确,不要说过,不宜漏说略述。避免使用一些语意模糊的词语或短语,如:majority;a great of time;minority等,这些表达易造成混乱、误解,甚至引起不必要的纠纷。这一点对商务文件、信函等尤为重要。

3、明晰原则(clearness)

信要写得清清楚楚、明明白白,毫无晦涩难懂之处,以至于收信人看了之后不会误解写信人的意图。信的每段宜一个话题为妥,采用篇幅较短的段落阐述,每段段首以主题句开门见山提出每段的主要观点。段与段之间应使用过渡语衔接,诸如:firstly;secondly;however;moreover;in contrast 等短语,使整封信自然流畅,明白易懂。

4、简洁原则(conciseness)

一封拖沓冗长、措辞复杂的书信不仅写时费时,对方阅读更浪费时间,有时甚至看不懂。故撰写商业信件时要长话短说,避免罗嗦,用尽可能少的简单的文字,完整清楚地表达需要表达的意思,这一点符合商务英语简易化的趋势。

5、完整原则(completeness)

信函的内容力求完整,需回答来信所提出的所有问题和要求,或是包括写信人希望收信人作出积极反映的一切问题及情况。

6、具体原则(concreteness)

使所表达的内容准确而又生动。当涉及到数据或具体的信息时,比如时间、地点、价格、货号等等,尽可能做到具体。这样会使交流的内容更加清楚,更有助于加快事务的进程。

7、体谅原则(conscientiousness)

体谅原则强调对方的情况而非我方情况,要体现一种为他人考虑、多体谅对方心情和处境的态度。当撰写商务英语文书时,要将对方的要求、需要、渴望和感情记在心中,寻找最好的方式将信息传递给对方。

以上七个原则是商务信函写作中的指导原则,对于写好一封商务信函起着非常重要的作用。

四、英语商务信函的礼貌

从上述原则中,可以发现礼貌是书面商务信函中最基本的原则,是重中之重。我们这里所说的礼貌,并不是简单用一些礼貌用语,比如your kind inquiry;your esteemed order等就可以的,而是要体现一种为他人考虑,多体谅对方心情与处境,并且在文字表达的语气上应表现出一个人的职业修养,显得客气而得体。最重要的礼貌是及时回复对方,最感人的礼貌是从不怀疑甚至计较对方的坦诚。商务交往中肯定会发生意见分歧,但礼貌和沟通却可以化解分歧而不影响双方的良好关系。商务信函中无论是索赔、抱怨及拒绝接受等措辞均要力求客气,委婉、礼貌地作答。

五、英语商务信函中礼貌的表现

1、英语商务信函的首尾(1)信件开头的问候语

虽说这些都是客套话,但是在商务信函中却是一种礼貌的表现。

如果对方是女士,不论婚否,如无职称,可用“Ms.”。如对方愿用“Miss”或“Mrs.”,宜尊重对方意见。如不知对方是男士还是女士,则可根据信的内容,选择一个合适的尊称。例如:“Dear Customer”;“Dear Personnel Manager”。

如果你不知道对方的姓名,可以用最客气的方式来问候他/她:Dear Sir or Madam(尊敬的先生或女士)。

如果你知道对方的名字,则可以标明对方姓名,显得更亲切些:Dr.Smith(斯密思博士);Mr.Smith(斯密思先生);Mrs.Smith(斯密思夫人);Ms.Smith(斯密思女士);Miss Smith(斯密思小姐)。

如果收信人是你的朋友或关系亲密的同事,就直接用名字,不用姓:Dear James(亲爱的詹姆斯)。

力求避免使用“To Whom It May Concern”。因为据美国一些礼仪专家说,多数使用这样的称呼的信件都被扔进字纸篓,这种信件也许要花上几个星期才能到达负责处理这类信件的有关部门。然而,现在不少人向外国公司、大学等推荐人员时,他们的推荐信仍使

用这种称呼语(当然,国外也有不少人仍然使用这种称呼语),这是不可取的。如果你向一家外国公司推荐一名求职者,则可把推荐信写给该公司的人事部,使用“Dear Personnel Director”;“Dear Personnel Manager”而不宜使用“To Whom It May Concern”。

(2)信件结尾的敬语

结束语与开首的称呼语一样,也是客套语,但是在商务信函中也是一种礼貌的表现。如果既是你的业务伙伴,又是朋友,则可用非正式的礼貌用语,只要给出最真诚的祝福,所以可以用:Best Wishes或者 Best regard。

如果只是你的业务伙伴,而且是第一次合作时,则要用正式的礼貌用语,既要表现出你真挚的祝福,也要表明你的严肃态度,所以可以用:Sincerely;Sincerely yours;Truly yours;Yours truly;Yours very truly。

有时也用Respectfully或Respectfully yours。在所有的结束语中,这是正式程度最高的,在商务信函中使用最少,因为它一般用于写给政府官员或教会神职人员的信中;Best 正式程度最低,但常用于比较熟悉的收信人;Sincerely用的最多。

2、英语商务信函的语气

无论何时,只要有必要,别忘了“谢谢”,“请您„„”之类的词语,而且既要热情友好,又要审慎仔细。由于您写的信函都是有其目的性的,所以您信函里所采用的语气语调也应该符合您的目的。在写之前先不妨仔细考虑一下,您写这封信函是想达到一个什么样的目的,您希望对收信人产生一种怎样的影响呢?是歉意的,劝说性的,还是坚决的,要求性的。这完全可以通过信函中的语气语调来表现。

因此,一定要避免以下十种语气:(1)不信任的语气

“If what you say is true …”;“If …as you allege”之类的语句往往让人觉得你是在怀疑别人的可信度。这样不利于激发对方作出对你有益的举动。试比较下面的例句:

Poor:

We received the letter in which you claimed that the timer was defective at the time of purchase.If the goods were damaged in shipment, as you allege, we „

Better: We have noticed in your letter that the timer was defective at the time of purchase.As you mentioned the goods were damaged in shipment, we …

(2)指责的语气

无论何时,如果你想激发对方做出对你有益的举动,切忌指责对方,你可能会因为使用“You neglected”;“You forget”;“You omitted”等指责性语句而冒犯对方。试比较下面的例子,如果你是收信人,你会有什么反应呢。

Poor:

You obviously ignored our request that you return the report by registered mail.You did not read the operating instruction for the new machine carefully.Better:

We did request that you return the report by registered mail.To enjoy the full benefits of the new machine, you should follow the operation instruction carefully.(3)自以为是的语气

自以为是,认定对方会按自己的意见去做,是不礼貌的。例如下述句子就说明了这一点:

You would of course rather continue to do business with us because …

这种自以为是的观点,有一种强加于人的意味,结果往往适得其反,使对方不易接受。

(4)简慢的语气

虽然简明扼要是一种优点,但过分简单会给人一种漠视无礼的感觉。不论是否有意,简慢地回信是一种对别人的意见或做出的努力不够重视的表现。

(5)讽刺的语气

很少有人愿意被人讽刺,在书信中几更须注意。有时写信人用反话讽刺来发泄不满,或强调某一意见,结果往往适得其反。例如下面这段文字,是商店经理写给全体营业员的,批评他们没有完成营业额,但由于用了讽刺口气,可想而知,结果不仅没有达到鼓励大家今后奋勉的目的,反而引起大家的不满:

在商务信函中,最忌暴躁口气。暴躁有时表现为发牢骚,但牢骚是谁也不会乐于接受的。例如下面句子,句中的暴躁口气必然引起大家的反感:

How do you expect the duplicating center to do its job correctly, if you don’t fill out Form 211F in triplicate as you are supposed to?(7)愤怒的语气

如果说暴躁的语气仅仅是发牢骚,那么愤怒口气则简直是在咆哮。

I bought a tape recorder at your store three days ago.The darn thing doesn’t work at all.When I called your store and demanded a refund yesterday, I was told that it was a damn sale item and there were to refunds on sale items.This is a real rip off.写信人也许完全有理由这样抱怨,但是愤怒的语气很可能导致对方的恶言拒绝。当然在实际业务中,有些事确实令人愤慨,但切忌在交际中表现出来。

(8)侮辱的语气

在一般商务信函中,蓄意侮辱是罕见的,但是无意之中中伤读者却是时有发生,最常见的是使用一些无形中贬低的言词。下面是一封产品推销的节录,该信的原意是想说服读者购买产品,结果反而中伤了不少人,因为这段文字的言外之意是谁不买金鱼牌的打字机,谁就愚昧无知:

All wise office managers around the country order Gold Fish-----the most efficient of all office typewriters.(9)居高临下的语气

在商务信函中,如果双方意在平等的基础上相互合作,居高临下的语气往往会带来不良的后果。

Poor: In an establishment as large as ours, we seldom …

We shall allow you to … You may call us at … Better: Please notice that it is not our common practice to … We shall be glad to have you … Please call us at …

同样,大吹大擂也会触犯读者。例如:

Our car costs more than competing one because it’s worth more than competing ones.(10)过分亲热的语气

近年来有一种趋势,商务信函的写作越来越采用非正式语体,许多人不按旧时的虚礼客套写信。然而,有些人却走向了另一个极端,显得过于亲热、友好。结果弄巧成拙,不仅没有建立友好感情,反而引起读者反感。

一般来说,商务信函中不要提及对方的隐私或者令人尴尬的事情,不要用名字称呼对方(如“Dear Fred”),除非双方早已习惯用名字称呼。

另外,过分亲热还表现在写信时滥用对方的姓名,以为这样可以取悦对方的欢心,其实不然。例如:

Dear Mr.Jones, We are … You see, Mr.Jones, as you know, Mr.Jones, 诚然,在信中使用对方姓名,如果恰到好处,会使对方感到亲切。但切不可滥用,即使在一封长信中,最多也只能用一次。

3、商务信函中体现出的态度

在商务信函中,写信人所体现出来的态度一定要是真诚和积极的。(1)以诚相待,避免虚伪

这种真诚的礼貌表现在内容上。这种礼貌要使对方真正感受到了,才能收到真正的效果,否则,这种礼貌就会被认为是虚伪,交际也就失去其意义了。

一般来说,虚伪有以下几种表现: a、过度谦虚

在商务函电中,一定的谦虚是必要的,但要避免过度谦虚,否则会给人以虚伪之感,如下面这封信就是如此:

Dear Mr.King, We most deeply apologize for the foolish error we made in handling your last order.Our distribution coordinator, our driver, and I myself, all wish to express our profoundest regrets.We are so very grateful, too, for the renewed opportunity your good company is giving us to serve your needs.We will continue trying, to the up most of our ability, to justify your faith in our efforts.Obediently yours, Richard Archer 有时出于必要,表示一下歉意是无可非议的;有时如有理由,说一句恭维话也未尝不可。但如果两者都做得过分,则贬低了自己,显得低三下四,既无必要,又欠诚意。

b、明显的恭维

恭维和谦虚一样,有时能增加一封信的效果,但多数人对明显的恭维,往往加以警惕,甚至引起反感,不得不使之怀疑写信人的诚意。

c、夸张

夸张易识破,也易引起反感。因此,应该控制使用一些诸如“sensational”; “amazing”;“unique”;“fantastic”之类的措辞。除非有确凿的事实根据,否则应尽量避免使用一些极端浮华的辞藻,因为即使是事实,也使许多人难以置信,从而怀疑你的诚意。

(2)积极对待,避免消极

即使在最忧郁、最悲观的情况下,也总有一些积极乐观的东西关键是在于如何看待现实。你可强调黑暗的一面,也可强调光明的一面。乐观为上策,因为这是人们希望看到的。乐观不仅使别人感到高兴,而且也使自己感到高兴。悲观会使交际带来一种阴郁的感觉,令人生厌不快。

The shipment will not arrive in Boston until the end of August.这句话强调了装卸的货不可能早来这样一个不祥的事实。如果反过来用积极肯定的语气表达,效果就不同了:

The shipment will arrive in Boston at the end of August.再看下面这个句子:

Since you did not indicate the correct stock number, we cannot fill your order.这是一种最糟糕的消极否定说法。这句话不仅强调了什么不能做(而不是什么能做),而且还有指责对方的口气。这是极不礼貌的,可将上述句子改为:

We will ship your order as soon as we know the correct stock number.下面这些词都含有消极否定的语气,所以应尽量控制使用:

Blame;fail;loss;complain;failure;neglect;death;false;prejudiced;delinquent;fault;terminate;dishonest;lie;worry;error;lose;wrong。

当然,根据情况,有时需要使用消极否定的语言,但应慎重,仔细斟酌,做到恰如其分,以达到最佳效果。

消极否定语气:Your order will be felled without further delay.You will never regret purchasing this fine sweater.积极肯定语气:Your order will be felled immediately.You will always be grateful that you own this fine sweater.避免消极口气的的一些原则:

a、强调事情的正面,即事情的如何或将如何;而不要强调事情的反面,即事情的不如何或将不如何;同时强调已做的,能做的或将做的;而不要强调未做的,无法做的或将不去做的。

b、尽量避免使用具有否定含义的词语。例如: I am sorry we blundered on your order…

虽然上述抱歉词语,形式上是肯定的,但使人联想到抱歉之中的那中不幸情况。c、注意防止措辞含有消极否定的言外之意,即使自己认为说得相当积极肯定,也须再三琢磨反复推敲。

d、不要受思想情绪的影响。即使有时感到某信非写不可,也不要把它看成是一种负担,而应把它看做是一次建立或增进同读者友好感情的机会。

(3)防止“冷漠”和 “不必要的条件”

虽然消极否定的态度和措辞违背积极肯定的原则,但还有一些态度和措辞也不符合积极肯定的要求。

冷漠态度表现:

冷漠说法:We have received your letter of August 15.积极肯定说法:We thank you for your letter of August 15.第一句句子并无多大缺点,只是效果不如第二句。不必要条件表现:

条件说法:If you will send us a check for $12 right away, you will be able to … 肯定说法:By sending us a check for $12 right away, you will be able to …

第一句因为有了“if”,就成了有条件限制的句子。这些句子都或多或少含有读者不会这样去做的可能性。此外,由于“if”置于句首,就更强调了条件限制。而经过修改的的第二个句子表达了同样的意思,却并无上述否定可能性的言外之意。

当然,条件限制不可能完全避免,“hope”及“if”这类用词不可能完全从业务信件中消失;说话也不可能永远直截了当,有时需要条件限制来避免自以为是的口气。

We’d appreciate knowing about any friend who might be interested in acting as our agents.该句子虽然有条件,但较客观。

此外,尊重对方也是礼貌的表现。有些人不喜欢第一人称代词(I, We),特别是用在每句或者每段开头,为了尊重对方的感情,可用第二人称代词(you)。例如:thank you for…;would you like to …;you may want …用词上要力求避免种族偏见、残疾、年龄、性别和宗教等使人产生不愉快感觉的词。如“my girl”实际上指的是“my secretary”,而“cleaning woman”应用“domestic housekeeper”代替。

六、结束语

随着全球经贸一体化的不断推进,国际贸易的竞争日益激烈,英语商务信函在其中起着重要的作用。同时,礼貌用语在国际商务活动中起着重要的作用,它能营造一种尊重对方、寻求合作的气氛,能使我方在对方的心目中树立起一种正直、热情、有良好文化修养和职业道德的形象,从而乐意与我方合作,带来无限商机;就算您这次拒绝了对方的商务要求,也不会因此失去这个朋友,不会影响今后合作的机会。因此,在日常的商务活动中,我们应注意英语商务信函中礼貌用语的使用,商业信函才会起到它应有的作用——通过英语的媒介作用起到发展贸易、增进友谊的作用。

第三篇:英文商务信函中的“合作”和“礼貌”

摘要:近年来,许多学者把合作及礼貌语用理论的基本分析模式运用到会话语料分析中。本文认为它们同样也适用于书面语料的分析。文中通过对一系列英文商务信函中合作原则和礼貌策略应用情况的分析,论证了二者之闻进退相让的互补关系,同时也阐述了商务信函并非静态酌、格式化的文体,而是互动交际的产物。关键词:商务信函;合作原则;礼貌策略;互补性 1 引言

目前人们普遍认识到有关合作及礼貌的语用理论在语篇分析中起着举足轻重的作用(Kasper,l990;B1unl—Kulka.1997)。近年来人们对合作及礼貌语用理论的研究大多是建立在会话语料分析基础之上。本文认为合作及礼貌理论的基本分析方法同样可以应用到书面语篇的研究中,作者收集了一系列英文商务信函样本,研究其中合作原则和礼貌策略的应用。本文所使用的语料主要来自罗伊·波(1999)的《商业书信手册》和阎善明(1998)编著的《现代商业书信手册》。文中不仅分析了一些常见的消极及积极礼貌策略,还分析了较少见的非公开施行面子威胁行为及公开施行面子威胁行为等礼貌策略。作者之所以提出这个观点并为之进行了一系列论证,不是为了进一步论证合作原则和礼貌策略的普遍适用性,而是要以此证明二者之间的互补性,而这种进退相让的互补关系又使我们能够推断出写信人与收信人所处的特殊语境。

2.合作原则和礼貌理论

Grice(1975:45)曾说过在任何有意义的言语交际过程中,交谈双方存在着一种默契,一条双方都必须遵守的原则,即合作原则。它包括四条基本准则:(1)质量准则;(2)数量准则;(3)方式准则;(4)相关准则。正是合作原则确保了交谈双方的所有话语与交际目的一致,从而引导有意义交际的顺利开展在交际过程中,不同言语行为具有本质上的礼貌性或不礼貌性(Leech,1983),几乎所有的言语行为都对说话人或听话人的消极面子(不希望别人强加于自己的需要)或积极面子(希望得到别人的赞扬或喜爱的需要)形成潜在的威胁(Brown and Levinson,1978)因而Leech等人的礼貌理论成为合作理论的必要补充,推动交际顺利进行。Leech(1983)提出礼貌原则的主要目的是解释合作原则无法解释的语言现象。其礼貌原则的最大不足是对礼貌的得体性未给予充分的考虑(何兆熊.1999).因而他的礼貌原则在很大程度上是消极理论.并不能补救诸多本质上不礼貌的言语行为。

Brown和Levinson(1978)提出的礼貌概念在本质上是策略性的 他们在Erring Goffman(1967)的“面子”概念的基础上提出了具有积极和消极面子的“典型人”(Model Person)的理论系统:典型、能够根据决定面子威胁行为(Face Threatening Act)的三变量,即说话人和听话人之间的社会距离、相对权势和言语行为本身固有的强加的绝对级别,理性地选择礼貌策略以满足交际双方的面子(Brown and Levinson.1987:58)。他们提出了以下五种礼貌策略;(1)公开施行面子威胁行为(bold or record without repressive actions);(2)积极礼貌策略(positive politeness);(3)消极礼貌策略(negative politeness);(4)非公开施行面子威胁行为(off record)}(j)不施行面子威胁行为(don’t do the FIA)3 合作原则及礼貌理论与商务信函

合作原则与礼貌策略不仅充分体现在会话中.在书面语篇中也被广泛实施。商务信函因其特殊的功能要求普遍体现了这二者的运用.人们通常把商务信函的功能归纳为:(1)建立业务关系,(2)提供或接受一项服务,(3)涉及商务谈判,(4)投诉或调解投诉,(5)促进业务扩大等等。由此可以得出商务信函与写信人及收信人的利益息息相关 它并不是写信人单边选定的格式,而是交际双方互动过程的结果其语言也是人们根据报告语境,情景语境等诸多语用因素,在长期使用过程中形成的语言功能变体。因合作原则与礼貌策略通常应用于互动交际,它们在商务信函中也起着重要的调节作用。人们把成功商务信函的特征总结为:完整(completeness),简洁(concise)清晰(clarity)和礼貌(courtesy)等(阎善明 1998)。其中前三条与合作原则基本相符,最后一条也谈及礼貌理论的应用。商务信函中合作原则把握得好与不好与礼貌策略运用得是否得当在很大程度上决定着商贸业务的成败与否。Leech(1983,104)说过“不同场合需要不同种类的礼貌原则,而不同种类的商务信函也因为具有本质上的礼貌性或不礼貌性,需要使用不同的礼貌策略和相应的合作原则。Leech按言语行为对礼貌的要求将言语行为分为四类:竞争类+和谐类,合作类和冲突类。本文把商务信函归在相应的类别中是因合作类与礼貌关联不太,在此处忽略,分别阐述其中合作原则及礼貌策略的运用。3.1和谐类信函

虽然询问在言语行为理论中被列为竞争类言语行为,但商务询问从礼貌角度考虑应属于施惠行为,因为它由一位潜在顾客所写,对收信人意味着可能的利润。其回函在言语行为中属于提供行为,即本质礼貌行为。所以商务询问及回函在文中均被列为和谐类信函。见下面两例中合作原则和礼貌策略的运用情况:

(1)We are glad to inform you that we are interested in your hand made gloves in a variety of genuine leather. There is a steady demand here for gloves of high quality and+ although sales are not part curably higher good prices can be obtained will you please send I copy of your catalogue for gloves with details of your prices and of payment? They are fully illustrated in the 至于(a)段和(b)段.有人台认为它们不属于收信人询问的范围,违背了数量准则,但事实上它们遵循着(1’hair(1969:45)提出的质量数量准则(Maxim n{quMity—quarltily)他的质量数量准则要求 除非有特别显著的理由.一旦听话』、(凄者)町能会对说话^(作者)所传递的信息感兴趣的话,后者都应该给予一个较强力度的陈述而不是弱势陈述”。他所说的“力度 就是交际所传递的信息量(Leech.1983:85)在此信中.写信人通过提供收信人可能会感兴趣的信息.吸引了收信人的注意力.同时也起到了促销的作用 信中斜体处均为积极礼貌策略的运用.写信^以此表明与收信』、的共同之处,建立二者间的伙伴关系 由“ 上例中.我们初步得出推论 在商务书信中人们普遍遵守质量、数量、及相关准则.却常常为了礼貌起见而放弃方式准则。3.2竞争类信函

还盘(counter offer)是一种率质上不礼貌的行为t因为其目的是要求收信人降低价格,它使后者利益受损.威胁着收信凡的消极面子在还盘信中严格遵守舍作原则 以直截丁当的方式提出要求非常不妥,所“ 有必要牺牲方式准则,采用各种礼貌策略来缓解这种面子威胁行为 “赞誉(compllmen1)也是Brown和Le~inson提出的补救面子威胁行为的积极礼貌策略之一 Ho[mes(1 988 l 66)把赞誉定艾为说话』、或直接或含蓄地赞扬除己之外(通常是听话』、)的』、所具备的双方都推岽的某些优点”,』、们常常通过赞誉突出正面的、给予对方面子的信息,来满足听话』、的面子要求.从而为即将出现的面子威胁行为设置良好的语言环境以减弱其强制。见例(3):

尽管人们普遍认为投诉信应该措词小心.但是在一些投诉信中.写信^会全然放弃补救策略,公开施行面子威胁行为。此处需要考虑Brown 和Lmvinson提出的决定言语行为礼貌程度的三要素如果交际双方之商的社会距离、权势基本相同,而收信人先前行为的强加过太.使当前的写信、严重受损.后者此时在回信中有充分理由放弃任何补救策略,公开施行面子威胁行为。下例就是由一位非常守信用的常年顾客在不欠该公司任何款项的情况下,收到一封“不付款等着瞧 的催款警告信后写的投诉信:

合作及礼貌的互补性在催款信中也随处可见。任何公司都希望顾客能够及时付清账单,但顾客们并不总是这样做.因此公司需要一而再,再而三地写催款信(eo]leetion letter)催款信通常经历以下几十步骤:(1)提醒(reminder).(2)询问(inquiry)和恳请(appeM),(3)最后通牒(ultimatum)。在晟初阶段.写信八台放弃方式准则而采取一些娄如非公开施行面子威胁行为,积极礼貌策略和梢极礼貌策略来满足收信^ 的面子要求,从而降低催款行为的强加 如最初,写信^ 常以便条提醒对方,除账单之外仅附上一句:Do you forget?若对方仍无答复,在随后的信中他常会谈及收信人的一贯良好信誉,并把其过久未付归结为粗心大意或是他无法控制的第三方的错误造成的,见例(5):
