Sleep Problems Plague the Older Set
Older Americans often have difficulty getting a good night’S rest. It's a huge quality—of-life problem, experts say, because contrary to popular belief, seniors require about the same amount of sleep as younger adults.“Sleep problems and sleep disorders are not an inherent(固有的)pa rt of aging,”said Dr.Harrison G.Bloom,an associate clinical professor of geriatrics(老年病学)and medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.“It’S pretty much of a myth that older people need less sleep than younger people.”
Yet.in a study published recently in The American Journal of Medicine, researchers found that more than half of older Americans have problems getting the sleep they need.older people tend to have“sleep fragmentation,”meaning they wake up more often during the night, said study author Dr.Julie Gammck,an assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Geriatric Medicine at St.Louis University. They also seem to get less“REM”sleep, the type of sleep during which rapid eye movement occurs,Bloom added. It’s unclear what role these naturally occurring changes in sleep patterns have on person’s quality of life,Bloom said.“What is important, though,is that older people often have actual sleep disorders and problems with sleep,”he said. And,experts say, there is usually more than one cause.“Sleep trouble in older adults is typically associated with acute and chronic illnesses, including specific sleep disorders like sleep apnea(呼吸暂停)and restless leg syndrome that appear with greater frequency in older populations,”said Michael V.Vitiello , a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and associate director of the University of Washington’S Northwest Geriatric Education Center.Taking multiple medications,as many older people do,can also lead t0 fatigue a“ hypersomnia,”or being tired all the time,Bloom added.Another big problem,he noted,IS depression and anxiety.“Those are very commonly associated with sleep problems.”
Despite the prevalence(流行)of sleep difficulties in older adults, many patients Aren’t getting the help they need。As a result, problems like insomnia(失眠),restless leg syndrome and sleep apnea are underdiagnosed and undertreated,Bloom said.16.Sleep problems can seriously affect one’s quality of life

Parkinson’s Disease Parkinson’s disease affects the way you move.It happens when there is a problem with certain nerve cells in the brain.Normally, these nerve cells make an important chemical called dopamine.Dopamine sends signals to the part of your brain that controls movement. It lets your muscles move smoothly and do what you want them to do.When you have Parkinson’s, these nerve cells break down. Then you no longer have enough dopamine, and you have trouble moving the way you want to.No one knows for sure what makes these nerve cells break down. But scientists are doing a lot of research to look for the answer. They are studying many possible causes, including agin g and poisons in the environment.Abnormal genes seem to lead to Parkinson’s disease in some people. But so far, there is not enough proof to show that it is always inherited.’rremor may be the first symptom you notice. It is one of the most common signs of the disease, although not everyone has it.More importantly, not everyone with a tremor has Parkinson’s disease.Tremor often starts in just one arm or leg or only on one side of the body.It may be worse when you are awake but not moving the affected arm or leg.It may get better when you move the limb or you are asleep. In time, Parkinson’s affects muscles all through your body, so it can lead to problems like trouble swallowing or constipation. In the later stages of the disease, a person with Parkinson’s may have a fixed or blank expression, trouble speaking, and other problems. Some people also have a decrease in mental skills(dementia). At this time, there is no cure for Parkinson’s disease. But there are several types of medicines that can control the symptoms and make the disease easier to live with. You may not even need treatment if your symptoms are mild.Your doctor may wait to prescribe medicines unntil your symptoms start to get in the way of your daily life.Your doctor will adjust your medicines as your symptoms get worse. You may need to take several medicines to get the best results.23.Paragraph I_____________.24.Paragraph 2 _____________.25.Paragraph 3_____________.26.Paragraph 4 _____________.A.Tips for Patients with the Disease

第四部分-阅读理解
Martin Luther King Jr.By the time the Montgomery Improvement Association chose the 26-year-old Martin Luther King Jr.as its leader, the hours-old bus boycott by the black citizens of Montgomery, Alabama, was already an overwhelming success.King would later write that his unanticipated call to leadership “happened so quickly that I did not have time to think in through.” “It is probable that if I had, I would have declined the nomination.”
Although press reports at the time focused on his inspiring oratory, King was actually a reluctant leader of a movement initiated by others.(The boycott began on Dec.5 1955.)His subsequent writings and private correspondence reveal man whose inner doubts sharply contrast with his public persona. In the early days of his involvement, King was troubled by telephone threats, discord within the black community and Montgomery's “get tough” policy, to which king attributed his jailing on a minor traffic violation. One night, as he considered ways to “move out of the picture without appearing a coward,” he began to pray aloud and, at that moment, “experienced the presence of the God as I had never experienced Him before.”
He would later admit that when the boycott began, he was not yet firmly committed to Gandhian principles.Although he had been exposed to those teachings in college, he had remained skeptical.“I thought the only way we could solve our problem of segregation was an armed revolt,” he recalled.“I felt that the Christian ethic of love was confined to individual relationships.”
Only after his home was bombed in late January did king reconsider his views on violence.(At the time, he was seeking a gun permit and was protected by armed bodyguards.)Competing with each other to influence King were two ardent pacifists: Bayard Rustin, a black activist with the War Resisters League, and the Rev.Glenn E.Smiley, a white staff member of the Fellowship of Reconciliation.Rustin was shocked to discover a gun in King's house, while Smiley informed fellow pacifists that King's home was “an arsenal.”
31.What did King think of his nomination as leader of the Montgomery Boycott?
A)He hadn't expected it.B)He had to think about it carefully.C)He would refuse to accept it.D)He was prepared to accept it.32.Why was King unwilling to lead the movement at first?
A)Because he doubted if the boycott would be successful.B)Because he was troubled with a traffic accident at that time.C)Because he thought he was too young to be a leader.D)Because he himself didn't start the boycott.33.Which of the following is Not mentioned as something that happened at the beginning of the black people's movement?
A)King was put into prison.B)Black people disagreed with each other.C)King's armed revolt proposal was turned down.D)Black people found it hard to accept the policy pursued in Montgomery.34.Which of the following was the immediate cause that made King change his view on violence?
A)The education he received in college.B)The attack of his home.C)The influence of two active non-violence advocates.D)The verdict of the Supreme Court.35.In Paragraph 4, the last sentence “King's home was 'an arsenal'” means
A)King's home was a place where people got together.A Phone That Knows You're Busy
It's a modem problem: you're too busy to be disturbed by incessant(连续不断的)phone calls so you turn your cell phone off.But if you don't remember to turn it back on when you're less busy. You could miss some important calls if only the phone knew when it was wise to interrupt you, you wouldn't have to turn it off at all.Instead, it could let calls through when you are not too busy.A bunch of behavior sensors(传感器)and a clever piece of software could do just that, by analyzing your behavior to determine if it's a good time to interrupt you.If built into a phone, the system may decide you're too busy and ask the caller to leave a message or ring back later.James Fogarty and Scott Hudson at Camegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania based their system oil tiny microphones, cameras and touch sensors that reveal body language and activity.First they had to study different behaviors to find out which ones strongly predict whether your mind is interrupted. The potential “busyness” signals they focused on included whether the office doors were left open or closed, the time of day, if other people were with the person in question, how close they were to each other, and whether or not the computer was in use.The sensors monitored these and many other factors while four subjects were at work.At random intervals, the subjects rated how interruptible they were on a scale ranging from “highly interruptible” to “highly not-interruptible”.Their ratings were then correlated with the various behaviors.“It is a shotgun(随意的)approach: we used all the indicators we could think of and then let statistics find out which were important, ” says Hudson. The model showed that using the keyboard, and talking on a landline or to someone else in the office correlated most strongly with how interruptible the
subjects judged themselves to be.Interestingly, the computer was actually better than people at predicting when someone was too busy to be interrupted. The computer got it right 82 per cent of the time, humans 77 per cent.Fogarty speculates that this might be because people doing the interrupting are inevitably biased towards delivering their message, whereas computers don't care. The first application for Hudson and Fogarty's system is likely to be in an instant messaging system, followed by office phones and cellphones.“There is no technological roadblock(障碍)to it being deployed in a couple of years, ” says Hudson.A big problem facing people today is that________.A.they must tolerate phone disturbances or miss important calls.B.they must turn off their phones to keep their homes quiet.C.they have to switch from a desktop phone to a cell phone.D.they are too busy to make phone calls.37、The behavior sensor and software system built in a phone________.A.could help store messages

Effects of Environmental Pollution
If pollution continues to increase at the present rate, formation of aerosols(浮质)in the atmosphere will cause the onset(开始)of an ice age in about fifty years' time. This conclusion, reached by Dr.S.I.Rasool and Dr.S.H.Schneider of the United States Goddard Space Flight Centre, answers the apparently conflicting questions of whether an increase in the carbon dioxide(二氧化碳)content of the atmosphere will cause the Earth to warm up or increasing the aerosol content will cause it to cool down. The Americans have shown conclusively that the aerosol question is dominant. Two specters haunting conservationists have been the prospect that environmental pollution might lead to the planet's becoming unbearably hot or cold. One of these ghosts has now been laid.Because it seems that even an increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to eight times its present value will produce an increase in temperature of only 2 ℃, which would take place over several thousand years. But the other problem now looms larger than ever.Aerosols are collections of small liquid or solid particles dispersed in air or some other medium. The particles are all so tiny that each is composed of only a few hundred atoms.Because of this they can float in the air for a very long time.Perhaps the most commonly experienced aerosol is industrial smog(烟雾)of the kind that plagued London in the 1950s and is an even greater problem in Los Angeles today. These collections of aerosols reflect the Sun's heat and thereby cause the Earth to cool.Dr.Rasool and Dr.Schneider have calculated the exact effect of a dust aerosol layer just above the Earth's surface in the temperature of the planet. As the layer builds up, the present delicate balance between the amount of heat absorbed from the Sun and the amount radiated from the Earth is disturbed. The aerosol layer not only reflects much of the Sun's light but also transmits the infrared(红外线的)radiation from below. So, while the heat input to the surface drops, the loss of heat remains high until the planet cools to a new balanced state.Within fifty years, if no steps are taken to stop the spread of aerosols in the atmosphere, a cooling of the Earth by as much as 3.5~C seems inevitable. If that lasts for only a few years it would start another ice age, and because the growing ice caps at each pole would themselves reflect much of the Sun's radiation it would probably continue to develop even if the aerosol layer were destroyed. The only bright spot in this gloomy forecast lies in the hope expressed by Dr.Rasool and Dr.Schneider that nuclear power may replace fossil fuels in time to prevent the aerosol content of the atmosphere from becoming critical. The author's main purpose in writing the article is to warn of________.A.warm weather
B.hot weather
C.a new ice age
D.a new iceberg
42、The word “specters” in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to________.A.pollution.B.carbon dioxide

43、We learn from the third paragraph that________.A.London was plagued with rats in the 1950s
B.London is covered with smog today
C.London was polluted by smog in the 1950s
D.Los Angeles is as heavily polluted today as London was in the 1950s
44、What will happen if the dust aerosol layer develops?
A.The Earth will get extremely hot.B.The balance between the amount of heat absorbed from the Sun and the amount lost could hardly be maintained.C.The light of the Sun could no longer reach the surface of the Earth.D.Infrared radiation could no longer be transmitted from the Earth to outer space.45、The only way to stop the spread of aerosols in the atmosphere, according to
Dr.Rasool and Dr.Schneider, is to use________.A.fossil fuels
B.electric power
C.nuclear energy
D.coal power

The Dollar in World Markets
According to a leading German banker, the U.S.dollar is “the most frequently discussed economic phenomenon of our times.” He adds, “…the dollars exchange rate is at present the most important price in the world economy…”.Because the dollar acts as a world currency, ___(1)___.The central banks of many countries hold huge reserves of dollars, and over half of all world trade is priced in terms of dollars.Any shift in the dollars exchange rate will benefit some and hurt others. Some people suggest, therefore, ____(2)___.The dollars exchange rate has been too volatile and unpredictable.Several years age the dollar was rapidly declining in value. This made it ___(3)___.The rise in the price of foreign goods made it possible for U.S.businesses to raise the price of competing foods produced here, thus worsening inflation.Foreigners who dealt in dollars or who held dollars as reserves were hurt.People in the United States who had borrowed foreign currencies found that they had to pay back more than they borrowed ___(4)___.The United States lost face in the eyes of the rest of the world. The dollar went soaring upward, and the situation was reversed.United States exporters found it hard to sell abroad because foreigners would have to pay more for U.S.dollars.People in the United States now bought the relatively cheaper foreign goods, and U.S.manufacturers complained that they could not compete.Job losses were often blamed on the “overvalued” dollar.Poor nations ___(5)___ found it difficult to repay both the loans and the interest because they had to use more and more of their own currencies to obtain dollars. The solution to this problem is to end the system of floating exchange rates and return to fixed rates. We might even return to the gold standard.Fixed exchange rates did not work in the past.Currency values should be determined by market conditions.A drop in the exchange value of a nations currency means that it is importing too much, that it is too inefficient to compete in world markets, that it is permitting a high rate of inflation which makes its goods too expensive, that it is going too deeply in debt, or that others have lost confidence in the nations stability.A nation should bring its exchange rate back up by addressing these problems, not by interfering with the money market.A.that had borrowed dollars
B.that the dollars value should be more tightly controlled
C.because the declining dollar would buy fewer units of the foreign money
D.its value affects many nations
E.difficult for Americans to purchase foreign goods and services
F.that have a lot of U.S.dollars 第六部分-完形填空

Cosmetic Surgery
Surgery that can improve the way a person looks is becoming more and more popular in the United States. This kind of surgery is called cosmetic surgery, and both men and women are turning to this treatment as a way of keeping their appearance young as well as keeping competitive(有竞争力的)in their jobs.Men especially are beginning to turn to face-lifts(面部拉皮手术), liposuction(taking fat out of the body), and implants(putting artificial, parts into their bodies)to help them look younger. As companies downsize(缩编)and move younger employees into higher positions, older employees in their late forties and early fifties feel the need to look and act younger in order to stay competitive. These operations are not without dangers, however. One young woman had an eye operation to get rid of the bags under her eyes. She described her experience as terrible. She said, “When he started cutting, I was fully awake.Even though he'd given me an injection near my eyes, I saw everything.” She went on to explain, “1 knew I had to keep still because of what he was doing. He was scraping(刮)away fat underneath my eyes.It took about ten minutes. After he finished, I felt I couldn't walk.I was so faint.” Her troubles did not end after the operation for two weeks. Her eyes were swollen(肿胀的)and almost completely closed, and even dark glasses could not hide the side effects of the operation.Liposuction, taking fat out of the body, is probably the most popular cosmetic operation in the United States. It seems simple enough.First, a small cut is made over the place where the patient wants the fat removed.Next, a small pipe is put into the cut.A machine like a vacuum cleaner is then used to suck the fat out of the body. However, as one doctor explained, some problems can happen after the operation. He warned;“Irregular lumps and loose skin can result from this operation. If it is not evenly done, liposuction can produce a very lumpy result.” Patients often must have more liposuction to correct the problem.Cosmetic surgery is more popular in the US than anywhere else.A Right

Compact Disks If someone says to you your music CDs don’t really hold any music on them, and they only have numbers recorded on them, you may not believe it.In fact, he is right in that sound is actually recorded onto the CDs as special numbers — a digital code.1 The code is pressed onto the CD as bumps on a long spiral track almost five kilometerslong. These bumps are an average of 0.5 microns wide.A small laser beam shines onto the bumps as the CD turns. The light is reflected back to a receiver that records how the laser light bounces back. This lets the CD player2 turn the reflected light back into the original code. This means you can hear the original code as music.Digital codes are used with many technologies.E-mail needs these kinds of code numbers.Space probes communicate with their ground station on earth using digital codes.Bar codes are read as digital codes in computer systems.Digital communications with cell phones need digital codes.Weather radios also tune in to specific signals using these codes. There are many types of compact disk. One format is called CD-RWs.They can be recorded on and re-recorded on(rewritten on)as you would do with a floppy disk3.Another format is the CD-ROM.The technology for recording on these disks is different from other CDs.These CDs have a dye layer that the CD writer can darken or leave clear. The clear and dark spots are the digital code.CD-ROM stands for Compact Disc — Read Only
Memory.4 This disk is like a “super” floppy disk that can hold lots of information. One CD-ROM can hold the same amount of data as 500 floppy disks.Information is permanently recorded onto it.Computer games and other programs are considered to be CD-ROMs.CDs were first sold to the public in 1982.These CDs still play well and sound fine.Current CDs are expectedto last between 70 to 200 years.Of course, you can make sure your CDs last a long time by taking care of them.Science keeps on developing. It may not be many more years before a completely new technology is invented5 and introduced to the public for music recording. In the meantime, there is no doubt you will continue to enjoy listening to your favorite music on CDs6 and playing your favorite computer games on CD-ROMs.练习:

The Best Way to Reduce Your Weight
You hear this:“No wonder you are fat.All you ever do is eat.”You feel sad:“I skip my breakfast and supper.I run every morning and evening. What else can I do?”Basically you can do nothing.Your genes, not your life habits, determine your weight and your body constantly tries to maintain it.Albert Stunkard of the University of Pennsylvania found from experiments that,“80 percent of the children of two obese parents become obese,as compared with no more than 14 percent of the offspring of two parents of normal weight.”
How can obese people become normal or even thin through dieting?Well, dieting can be effective, but the health costs are tremendous.Jules Hirsch,a research physician at Rockefeller University, did a study of eight fat people. They were given a liquid formula providing 600 calories a day1.After more than 10 weeks, the subjects lost 45kg on average. But after leaving the hospital, they all regained. The results were surprising:by metabolic measurement, fat people who lost large amounts of weight seemed like they were starving. They had psychiatric problems. They dreamed of food or breaking their diet2.They were anxious and depressed;some were suicidal. They hid food in their rooms.Researchers warn that it is possible that weight reduction doesn’t result in normal weight, but in an abnormal state resembling that of starved non-obese people.Thin people, however, suffer from the opposite:They have to make a great effort to gain weight.Ethan Sims,of the University of Vermont, got prisoners to volunteer to gain weight. In four to six months, they ate as much as they could. They succeeded in increasing their weight by 20 to 25 percent. But months after the study ended, they were back to normal weight and stayed there. This did not mean that people are completely without hope in controlling their weight. It means that those who tend to be fat will have to constantly battle their genetic inheritance if they want to significantly lower their weight. The findings also provide evidence for something scientists thought was true-each person has a comfortable weight range3.The range might be as much as 9kg.Someone might weigh 60-69kg without too much effort. But going above or below the natural weight range is difficult. The body resists by feeling hungry or full and changing the metabolism to push the weight back to the range it seeks.词汇:

Russian and Norwegian scientists have reported finding stone objects and animal bones in the far north of European Russia. The scientists say the objects provide the first evidence that ancient hunters lived in the area more than 30 thousand years ago. They say this is at least 15 thousand years earlier than experts had thought. The Russian and Norwegian team worked at a camp along the Usa River and the Arctic Circle. The scientists say they found several ancient stone tools. They also found 123 bones from animals such as horses, reindeer(驯鹿)and wolves. The scientists say their most important discovery was a tusk from an ancient elephant called a mammoth(猛犸).The huge, curved tooth was more than l meter long. The tusk is covered with small cuts. The scientists believe humans made the marks with sharp-edged stone tools. The scientists used a process known as radiocarbon(放射性碳)dating to measure the age of the tusk.Radiocarbon dating shows the level of a radioactive form of carbon in a substance. The tests showed the tusk is about 36 thousand years old.The scientists say they are not sure what kind of humans left the stone objects and bones along the river. They said the people were either early humans called Neanderthals(穴居人,尼安德特人)or modern humans.Modern humans spread through Europe and Asia 30 thousand years ago.The scientists say the ancient people needed a high level of social development to survive in the extremely cold environment. The objects were discovered about 300 kilometers northeast of another area where scientists say humans once lived. That area has objects more closely linked to modern humans. Those objects are believed to be about 28 thousand years old.Nature magazine also published a report by John Gowlett of the University of Liverpool in England. He said the discovery shows the ability of early humans to do the unexpected. He also said the discovery should renew debate about the effects of the climate on the movements of early human population.1.Before people found stone objects and animal bones in the north of European Russia, some experts thought human beings lived in that area about

Happiness
A proverb allegedly(据说)from ancient China was widely spread in the West:“If you want to be happy for a few hours,go to get drunk;if you want the happiness to last three years, get married:if you want a lifetime happiness, take up gardening.”The reason for the last option is this:Gardening is not only useful;it helps you to identify yourself with nature, and thus brings you new joy each day besides improving your health.A research of a US university that I've read gives a definition of happiness as what makes a person feel comfortably pleased. To put it specifically, happiness is an active state of mind where one thinks one's life is meaningful, satisfactory and comfortable. This should be something lasting rather than transitory.Lots of people regard it the happiest to be at leisure. But according to the study, it is not a person with plenty of leisure but one at work that feels happy, especially those busy with work having little time for leisure.Happiness does not spell gains one is after but a desire to harvest what one is seeking for.People often do not cherish what they already have but yearn for what they cannot get. That is somewhat like a man indulging in dreams of numerous lovers while reluctant to settle down with the woman beside him.Happiness is a game balancing between two ends--what one has and what one wishes for, i.e.one's dream and the possibility to realize it.The study comes to this conclusion: A happy man is one who aims high but never forgets his actual situation;one who meets challenges that tap his ability and potentiality;one who is proud of his achievements and the recognition given to him.He has self-respect and self-confidence;treasures his own identity and loves freedom. He is sociable and enjoys wide-range communication with others;he is helpful and ready to accept assistance. He knows he is able to endure sufferings and frustrations;he is sensible enough to get fun from daily chores. He is a man capable of love and passion.1.Gardening can bring lifelong happiness because
A.it is a profitable business.B.it can improve a gardener's ability to remake nature.C.a gardener can enjoy a very happy relationship in marriage.D.nature is an unexhausted source of joy
2.The research of the US university found that most people feel happy when they
A.are at leisure.B.take the job of gardening.C.are after their goals.D.own great properties.3.Why does the writer mention “a man indulging in dreams of numerous lovers”(Lines 5--6, Para.3)?
A.To demonstrate the problem in marriage in modern society.B.To illustrate a radical way to achieve happiness.C.To criticize those who do not value what they already have.D.To indicate that happiness covers something besides the desire to gain
4.What kind of person is more likely to be unhappy according to the study?
A.The one who has self-respect and confidence.B.The one who is ambitious without consideration of his actual situation.C.The one who can take pleasure in communicating with others.D.The one who are ready to render help and accept help from others.5.What is happiness?
A.A transitory state of mind.B.Getting everything what one desires.C.An all-working and no-leisure life.D.A desire based on our actual situation.

2.A 第三段第一句“ Digital codes are used with many technologies.”是主题句。本段其他句子提供例证,即应用领域。作者列举了 5个领域:电邮、航天通讯、条码、手机和天气预报。选项 A的“Digital code has wide applications”与主题句的意思完全吻合,所以是答案。
3.F 第四段第一句:“ There are many types of compact disks.”是主题句。本段其他句子列举了两种常用的CD格式(format):一种是CD-RW,另一种是 CD-ROM。选项F的“CDs are of many formats”概括了本段的大意,是答案。
5.E 第四段中出现CD-RW这个词,介绍了“ They can be recorded on and re-recorded on(rewritten on)。这就是选E的依据。
6.B 第六段能找到与答案有关的句子,但 It may not be many more years before a completely new technology is invented and introduced to the public for music recording.7.C 第二段说到在CD机上还原数码时依靠的是激光发射装置和按收器。由此我们可以推论出激光发射器和接收器是CD机的主要部件。所以C是答案。
8.F 第三段第三句“ Space probes communicate with their ground station on earth using digital codes.”是选F的依据。

31、根据下列材料,回答31-45题 Eat More, Weigh Less, Live Longer
Clever genetic detective work may have found out the reason why a near starvation diet prolongs the life of many animals.Ronald Kahn at Harvard Medical School in Boston, US, and his colleagues have been able to extend the lifespan(寿命,)of mice by 18 per cent by blocking the rodent's(啮齿动物)increase of fat in specific cells. This suggests that thinness--and hot necessarily diet--promotes long life in “ calorie(热量卡)restricted” animals.“It's very cool work.” says aging researcher Cynthia Kenyon of the University of California, San Francisco.“These mice eat all they want, lose weight and live longer. It's like heaven.” Calorie restriction dramatically extends the lifespan of organisms as different as worms and rodents.Whether this works in humans is still unknown, partly because few people are willing to submit to such a strict diet. But many researchers hope they will be able to trigger the same effect with a drug once they understand how less food leads to a longer life. One theory is that eating less reduces the increase of harmful things that can damage cells. But Kahn's team wondered whether the animals simply benefit by becoming thin.To find out, they used biology tricks to disrupt the insulin(胰岛素)receptor(受体)gene in lab mice--but only in their fat cells.“Since insulin is needed to help fat cells store fat, these animals were protected against becoming fat,” explains Kahn. This slight genetic change in a single tissue had dramatic effects.By three months of age, Kahn, those modified mice had up to 70 per cent less body fat than normal control mice, despite the fact that they ate 55 per cent more food per gram of body weight. In addition.Their lifespan increased. The average control mouse rived 753 days, while the thin rodents averaged a lifespan of 887 days. After three years, all the control mice had died, but one—quarter of the modified rodents were still alive.
“That they get these effects by just manipulating the fat cells is controversial,”says Leonard Guarente of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who studies calorie restriction and aging. But Guarente says Kahn has yet to prove that the same effect is responsible for increased lifespan in calorie.restricted animals.“It might be the same effect or there might be two routes to long life,”he points out,“and that would be very interesting.”
Ronald Kahn and his colleagues can make mice live longer by_________. A.offering them less food B.giving them a balanced diet C.disrupting the specific genes in their fat cells D.preventing them growing larger
32、According to the passage.we do not know whether humans will benefit from taking in fewer calories partly because_________. A.humans, worms and rodents are different B.most people are not willing to be put on a strict diet C.the effect is not known D.genetic changes in tissues can not be performed on humans
33、What does the last sentence in the third paragraph imply? A.People like to lose weight, but they do not like to eat less. B.People want to go to heaven.but they do not want to die. C.Mice will go to heaven if they lose weight. D.Mice enjoy losing weight.
34、The average modified mouse lived_________. A.3 years B.753 days C.More than 3 years D.887 days
35、What can be inferred from the passage about the route to long life? A.It remains to be studied. B.It has already been discovered. C.Eating more leads to long life. D.Eating less leads to long life.
36、根据下列材料,回答36-50题 Valuing Childhood
The value of childhood is easily blurred(变得模糊不清)in today’S world.Consider some recent developments. The child, murderers in the Jonesboro schoolyard shooting case were convicted and sentenced. Two boys,7 and 8,were charged in the murder of an 11一year-old girl in Chicago. Children who commit horrible crimes appear to act of their own will.Yet,as legal proceedings in Jonesboro showed, the one boy who was able to address the court couldn’t begin to explain his acts.though he tried to apologize. There may have been a motive—youthful jealousy(妒忌)and resentment. But a deeper question remains:Why did these boys and others in similar trouble apparently lack any inner, moral restraint? That question echoes for the accused in Chicago, young as they are. They wanted the girl’s bicycle,a selfish impulse common enough among kids.
Redemption(拯救)is a practical necessity. How can value be restored to young fives distorted by acts of violence? The boys in onesboro and in Chicago will be confined in institutions for a relatively short time.Despite horror at what was done, children are not—cannot be—dealt with as adults, not if a people wants to consider itself civilized. That’s why politicians’cries for adult treatment of youthful criminals ultimately miss the point.
But the moral void(真空)that invites violence has many sources.Family instability contributes,so does economic stress. That void, however, can be filled. The work starts with parents, who have to ask themselves whether they’re doing enough to give their children a firm sense of right and wrong. Are they really monitoring their activities and their developing processes of thought? Schools,t00,have a role in building character. So do youth organizations. So do youth enforcement agencies, which can do more to inform the young about laws, their meaning, and their observance(遵守).
The goal, ultimately,is to allow all children a normal passage from childhood to adulthood(成年),so that tragic gaps in moral judgement are less likely to occur. The relative few who fill such gaps with acts of violence hint at many others who don’t go that far,but who lack the moral foundations childhood should provide--and which progressive human society relies on. The two boys in Chicago were__________. A.shot B.murdered C.accused D.sentenced
37、The boys in Jonesboro and Chicago apparently lacked a sense of__________. A.right and wrong B.discipline C.shame D.safety
38、According to politicians, when children commit crimes, they should be treated in the same way as__________. A.murderers B.criminals C.victims D.adults
39、Which of the following does the writer cite as a source of moral void? A.Official corruption. B.Social injustice. C.Family stability. D.Racial discrimination. 40、Which of the statements is NOT true according to this passage? A.Parents should strengthen moral instruction. B.Schools should help create a moral sense in children. CLaw enforcement agencies should do more to help children understand laws.D.Youth organizations play no role in building character.
41、根据下列材料,回答41-55题 The Body Thieves
In the early nineteenth century in Britain, many improvements were being made in the world of medicine.Doctors and Surgeons were becoming more knowledgeable about the human body.Illnesses that had been fatal a few years before were now curable. However,Surgeons had one problem. They needed dead bodies to cut up,or dissect(解剖).This was the only way that they could learn about the flesh and bones inside the body, and the only way to teach new surgeons to carry out operations. The job of finding these dead bodies was carded out by an unpleasant group of people called“body snatchers”.They went into graveyards(墓地)at night and, using wooden shovels to make less noise。dug up any recently buried bodies. Then they took the bodies to the medical schools and sold them.A body could be sold for between£5 and l0,which was a lot of money at that time. The doctors who paid the body snatchers had all agreement with them—they never asked any questions. They did not desire to know where the bodies came from,as long as they kept arriving.
The most famous of these body snatchers were two men from Edinburgh called William Burke and William Hare. Burke and Hare were different because they did not just dig Up bodies from graveyards. They got greedy and thought of all easier way to find bodies.Instead of digging them up.they killed the poorer guests in Hare’s small hotel.Dr.Knox,the respected surgeon they worked for.never asked why all the bodies they brought him had been strangled(勒死).
For many years Burke and Hare were not caught because, unsurprisingly, the bodies of their victims were never found by the police. They were eventually arrested and put on trial in 1829.The judge showed mercy to Hare and he was released but Burke Was found guilty and his punishment was to be hanged.Appropria tely, his body Was given to the medical school and he ended up on the dissecting table, just like his victims. In one small way,Justice was done. Now, over 150 years later, surgeons do not need the help of criminals to learn their skills.However.the science of surgery could not have developed without their rather gruesome(令人毛骨悚然的)help.

The Dangers of Secondhand Smoke
Most people know that cigarette smoking is harmful to their health.Scientific research shows that it causes many kinds of diseases. In fact, many people who smoke get lung cancer However, Edward Gilson has lung cancer, and he has never smoked cigarettes. He lives with his wife, Evelyn, who has smoked about a pack of cigarettes a day throughout their marriage.(46).No one knows for sure why Mr.Gilson has lung cancer.Neverth eless, doctors believe that secondhand smoke may cause lung cancer in people who do not smoke because nonsmokers often breathe in the smoke from other people's cigarettes.(47)The US Environmental Protection Agency reports that about 53000 people die in the United States each year as a result of exposure to secondhand smoke. The smoke that comes from a lit cigarette contains many different poisonous chemicals. In the past, scientists did not think that these chemicals could harm a nonsmoker's health.(48)They discovered that even nonsmokers had unhealthy amounts of these toxic(有毒的)chemicals in their bodies. As a matter of fact, almost all of US breathe tobacco smoke at times, whether we realize it or not.For example, we cannot avoid secondhand smoke in restaurants, hotels and other public places.Even though many public places have nonsmoking areas, smoke flows in from the areas where smoking is permitted. It is even harder for children to avoid secondhand smoke.(49)Research shows that children who are exposed to secondhand smoke are sick more often than children who live in homes where no one smokes and that the children of smokers are more than twice as likely to develop lung cancer when they are adults as are children of nonsmokers. The risk is even higher for children who live in homes where both parents smoke. People are becoming very aware of the dangers of secondhand smoke.(50)

Osteoporosis and Men
Mention the word osteoporosis in the manly world of testosterone, professional basketball and the XFL, and you 're likely to get a wave of the hand and a dismissive “That 's a woman 's disease.” Not so.More than 2 million American men have been found to have the thinning bones and skeletal weakness of osteoporosis, and an additional 3 million are at an increased risk of developing them. It's true that osteoporosis strikes women with much greater frequency than menrunning up and down basketball courts, soccer and baseball fields. As it happens, physical activity is one of the more important ways to increase bone density and protect bone health. But even the most active men cannot ignore certain facts of life. All of us build up our bones during the first three decades of life, typically reaching peak bone mass in the early 30s.Around the age of 35, we begin gradually to lose some of this bone mass.Women ultimately give up between 30%.Though mass loss in men is lower, it still makes us vulnerable to back pains and bone fractures. In fact, this year alone American men will suffer as many as half a million osteoporosis-related breaks, mostly in the spine, hip and wrist. These are not only painful;thousands die each year from fracture-related complications. For many of us, however, there's still time.Of all the side effects of aging, osteoporosis is one of the more preventable, through diet, exercise and changes in lifestyle. The two key nutritional substances for bone health are calcium, which makes bones stronger, and vitamin D, which helps the body absorb the calcium.Exercising is also important, with emphasis on weight-bearing activities in which bones and muscles work against gravity.Lifting weights and working out on resistance machines can help preserve bone density.Be careful about what's in your medicine cabinet.Prolonged use of some medications, such as steroids, can weaken your bones.Smoking and drinking are both bad for bones, as is prolonged weightlessness, for anybody who plans to work on the space station.Men are justified in thinking that osteoporosis is a woman's disease.A Right

English and English Community There is no doubt that English is a useful language. The people who speak English today make up the largest speech community in the world with the exception of speakers of Chinese.A speech community is similar to other kinds of communities. The people who make up the community share a common language.Often they live side by side, as they do in a neighborhood(街坊),a village,or a city.More often they form a whole country.National boundaries, however, are not always the same as the boundaries of a speech community.A speech community is any group of people who speak the same language no matter where they happen to live.We may say that anyone who speaks English belongs to the English speech community. For convenience(方便),we may divide the speakers into two groups: one in which the speakers use English as their native language, the other in which the speakers 1earn English as a second language for the purpose of education, commerce, and so on.Learning a second language extends one's vision and expands the mind. The history and literature of a second language record the real and fictional(虚构的)lives of people and their culture;a knowledge of them adds to our ability to understand and to feel as they feel.Learning English as a second language provides another means of communication through which the window of the entire English speech community becomes a part of our heritage.Paragraph 1___________.Paragraph 2___________.Paragraph 3___________.Paragraph 4___________.A Threat Posed by English

A New Cause of Suffering
A conference on obesity(肥胖症)was recently held in Vienna. Two thousand experts from more than fifty countries attended the conference.According to statistics, 1.2 billion people worldwide are overweight, and 250 million are too fat.Obesity is rapidly becoming a new cause of suffering.Professor Friedrich hopichler of Salzberg said: “we are living in the new age but with the metabolism(新陈代谢)of a stone-age man.I have just been to the United States. It is really terrible.A pizza(比萨饼)shop is appearing on every corner. We have been occupied by fast food and Coca-Cola-ization.”
Many of the experts stressed that obesity was a potential killer.Hopichler said: “eighty per cent of all diabetics(糖尿病人)are too fat, also fifty per cent of all patients with high blood pressure and fifty per cent with fatty tissue complaints.Ten per cent more weight means thirteen pet cent more risk of heart disease.Reducing one's weight by ten per cent leads to thirteen per cent lower blood pressure.”
Another expert Hermann Toplak said that the state health services should improve their financing of preventive programs.“the health insurance pays for surgery(such as reducing the size of the stomach)when the body-mass index(身体质量指数)is more than 40.That is equivalent to a weight of 116 kilograms for a height of 1.60 meters. One should start earlier.”
Toplak said tat prevention should begin in school.“Child obesity has a close relation with the time which children spend in front of TV sets.” How many people are suffering from obesity in the world?

It has been shown that children who smoke have certain characteristics.Compared with non-smokers they are more rebellious, their work deteriorates as they move up school, they are more likely to leave school early, and are more often delinquent and sexually precocious. Many of these features can be summarized as anticipation of adulthood. There are a number of factors which determine the onset of smoking, and these are largely psychological and social. They include availability of cigarettes, curiosity, rebelliousness, appearing tough, anticipation of adulthood, social confidence, the example of parents and teachers, and smoking by friends and older brothers and sisters. It should be much easier to prevent children from starting to smoke than to persuade adults to give up the habit once established, but in fact this has proved very difficult. The example set by people in authority, especially parents, health care workers, and teachers, is of prime importance.School rules should forbid smoking by children on the premises. This rule has been introduced at Summerhill School where I spent my schooldays. There is, however, a risk of children smoking just to rebel against the rules, and even in those schools which have tried to enforce no smoking by corporal punishment there is as much smoking as in other schools.Nevertheless, banning smoking is probably on balance beneficial.Teachers too should not smoke on school premises, at least not in front of children.36.In this passage the author puts an emphasis on
A.the consequence of smoking among children.B.the difficulty in prohibiting children from smoking.C.the causes of smoking among children.D.the solution to ban smoking among children
37.Which of the following is a common characteristic of young smokers

A.Some children start to smoke out of curiosity and vanity.B.Many children start to smoke because they want to appear mature.C.In order to have fewer children smokers, parents, teachers and health care workers should set examples.D.It is not as difficult to prevent children from starting to smoke as to dissuade adults from smoking..39.The writer concludes that school rules to forbid smoking
A.hould be introduced, for it really works at the school.B.should not be introduced, for it may cause disturbance.C.should be introduced though it may not work effectively.D.needn' t be introduced as long as teachers don' t smoke.40.The author's attitude towards his writing is
A.Objective.B.Emotional.C.Critical.D.Indifferent.Demand on Treatment Emphasized
AIDS programs in developing countries put too little emphasis on treatment.the World Health Organization(WHO)said Tuesday, asking for more small community—based clinics to be opened to treat HIV-infected people. An estimated 36 million to 46 million people are living with AIDS,two—thirds of them in Africa, but only 440,000 people in developing countries were receiving treatment by the end of 2003,the UN health agency said in its annual report.“Without treatment, all of them will die a premature and in most cases painful death,”the WHO said in the 169-page World Health Report.WHO Director General Lee Jong-wook said community-based treatment should be added to disease prevention and care for sufferers in AIDS programs.“Future generations will judge our time in large part by our response to the AIDS disease,”Lee said.“By tackling it decisively we will also be building health systems that can meet the health needs of today and tomorrow. This is a historic opportunity we cannot afford to miss,”he added.Anti retroviral drugs enable people hit by AIDS to live longer. The annual cost of treatment, which was about $10,000 when the drugs were first developed, has dropped to about $150.Treatment programs also help AIDS prevention efforts, the report said, citing great demands for testing and counseling where treatment has been made available.Good counseling in turn leads to more effective prevention in those who are uninfected, and significantly reduces the potential for HIV carriers to pass on the infection, the report said.Since its discovery in the 1980s,more than 20 million have died of AIDS,mostly in poor countries

Garlic
From early times man has used garlic(大蒜).The Bible speaks of it.The Israelites(古以色列人)were once far from home. They cried out to Moses, their leader, for the foods they loved: leeks(韭菜), onions, and garlic. The Romans, like the Israelites, loved to eat garlic. And they hung bags of garlic around their necks._____(1)They also thought it would keep them from getting sick.A similar idea is still held. Many people take garlic thinking it will prevent or cure disease. Most doctors say it does no such thing._____(2)Its smell may force people to stay far apart. At least then they can't pass germs on to each other._____(3)What if you're in a play, for instance? Actors have been known to forget their lines because they couldn't stand the garlic smell on a fellow actor's breath. Some have even made up new lines and actions that kept them far away from the one who had eaten garlic.Through the years man has tried to cope with the smell of garlic._____(4)We now know why. It's been found that the oils of the garlic do not stick to the teeth, Garlic tongue, or gums(齿龈).They go into the lungs instead. From there they are breathed out. They pass out through the skin too.Strange as it seems, food may have a great deal of garlic in it without smelling or tasting strong. It all depends on how it is cooked.French cooks make a good soup with whole cloves(瓣)of garlic. They use more than thirty cloves in one bowl of soup. But they take care not to crush them. And they cook them whole._____(5)And as the cloves cook they change in some strange way.The soup turns out to be delicious. It's not strong at all.A But no medicine, mouthwash, chewing gum, or toothpaste seems to help much
B As a result, the strong oils stay in the cloves.C They say it may help in one way, though.D Many people eat garlic.E But keeping your distance can be hard at times.F They hoped it would keep away the evil eye.第6部分:完形填空。阅读下面的短文,文中有15处空白,每处空白给出了4个选项,请根据短文的内容从4个选项中选择1个最佳答案,涂在答题卡相应的位置上。
