语类结构潜势理论指导下的商务英语函电教学

摘要:商务英语函电是开展对外贸易及有关商务活动的基础和工具,然而学生的商务英语函电写作水平却不够理想。本文以哈桑的语类结构潜势理论为基础,阐述了在该理论指导下的商务英语函电教学过程,旨在通过语类分析帮助学生解读商务英语函电语篇的同时,探索出提高学生商务英语函电写作能力的有效途径。

引言
中国加入WTO后,对外贸易活动日趋频繁。商务英语函电作为国际贸易活动的重要载体,是国际商务往来最为经常使用的联系方式,也是开展对外贸易及有关商务活动的基础和工具,然而学生的商务英语函电写作水平却不够理想。许多研究者已经意识到这一点,他们探讨了商务英语函电教学存在的问题,提出了提高教学效果的建议[1-4]。但是这些研究却忽略了语类理论对商务英语函电写作的影响。
商务英语函电是在商务环境中应用的英语,属于专门用途英语(ESP)范畴,它是一种特别的语体,强调的是在特定环境下的特种交际目的,是英语写作与外贸实务相结合的一门综合性学科。语类分析从商务英语函电的交际目的入手, 分析内容的框架结构、主要语气以及基本语言技巧的使用。所以以语类为基础的商务英语函电教学强调提高学习者对与语类密切相关的社会语境和语言特征的认识。本文以哈桑的语类结构潜势理论为基础,阐述了在该理论指导下的商务英语函电教学,旨在通过语类分析帮助学生解读商务英语函电语篇的同时,探索出提高学生商务英语函电写作能力有效途径。
一、语类结构潜势理论和语类教学法
语类结构潜势理论是由哈桑[5]提出的,她认为语言的使用受到情景语境中语场、语旨和语式三个变量的影响,并用语境配置(contextual configuration)来概括这3个变量。她提出语篇的类型受制于语境配置,每个语境配置都是“一组实现语场、语旨、语式的值” [5]。她将这三个变量的含义具体解释为:语场是交际过程中实际发生的事件,语旨是参与者的身份及他们之间的关系,语式是语言交际的渠道或媒介。这三种变量决定语言的三种意义类型, 即语场决定语言的概念意义, 语旨决定语言的人际意义,语式决定语言的谋篇意义。因此,哈桑认为:语境配置在很大程度上确定语篇结构,可以预测语篇结构的必要成分和可选成分, 各种成分的排序及成分的再现。必要成分规定了语类的框架, 能使人们识别不同语类之间的差异, 可选成分则允许语言使用者在特定的语类框架中变换语言形式。一个语篇究竟属于什么语类,往往是由结构的必要成分来定义的。而包含了某一语类所有的必要成分的结构表达式被称为该语类的“结构潜势”。对于在语言使用过程中出现的各种语类, Hasan认为它们是通过语类结构潜势来实现的, 是特定情景下形成的语境配置3个变量具体体现, 它包含某种语类中可能出现的所有的语篇模式和语篇结构。
在上述理论指导下,出现了以语类为基础的语类教学法, 又称体裁教学法, 盛行于以英语为母语的一些国家如美国和澳大利亚等。“语类教学法”建立在语篇的语类分析上,教师把语类和语类分析理论自觉地运用到课堂教学中,围绕语篇的结构开展活动,其目的是引导学生掌握语篇的语类结构潜势,从而帮助学生理解和撰写属于某一语类的语篇。
二、学生商务英语函电写作中的问题
作为商务英语函电课程的任课教师, 笔者发现除了语法和用词错误之外, 学生在商务英语函电写作技能方面有以下问题:
(一)不了解商务英语函电的篇章结构。如在传递不愉快信息时,商务英语函电的语篇层次一般包括5个部分:
1、neutral statement;
2、reasons;
3、refusal;
4、alternative, if possible;
5、goodwill ending。但是很多学生都忽略了中立态度这一步,将不好的消息置于开头部分。而这类信函的开头部分,语气必须尽量缓和, 不能太直率。双方都乐于接受的中立态度可以起到缓冲的作用, 即减轻不愉快消息带来的压力和打击,让读者有心情读去,这也是国际贸易人员语篇社团的一般规范。因此如果按“直接方式”组织语篇,会显得太过直接,容易伤害对方的感情, 从而影响双方的交际。
(二)没有掌握特定情景中的语言功能。在表达拒绝对方这一功能时,不少学生直接一口回绝,不留一点余地。如“We are not able to give you the offer as requested”, 这种消极、否定的陈述会使对方往坏的方面联想。如果改用更符合国际贸易语篇规范的语言来表达这一功能: “Although we are not able to give you the offer as requested, we will contact you as soon as new supplies reach us”, 把拒绝的消息置于although引导的让步从句中,将收信人的注意力引向主句—今后的合作,就能顾及对方的面子,使得话语的回旋余地增加,表示尚有机会今后再合作。
综上所述,学生在商务英语函电写作中出现的问题实质上是对国际贸易语篇社团的种种语言规范不够了解,而这恰恰与语类结构潜势密切相关。在商务英语函电教学中,运用语类教学法可以帮助学生了解商务函电的社会功能和交际目的,了解其语类结构潜势,从而更好地理解和创作符合特定语类惯例的商务函电。
三、语类结构潜势理论指导下的商务英语函电教学
针对上述问题,笔者在商务英语函电教学中采用以语类结构潜势理论为基础的语类教学法。下面以建立业务关系信函为例,阐述教学实施步骤。
(一)分组:将全班学生分成若干个小组, 每组由4—5名学生组成,每组指定一个组长。小组成员在完成任务的过程中互相协作,商讨意见,解决问题,共同实现小组目标。这样可以使小组成员互相学习,共同提高。
(二)情景导入: 将我国某出口公司的大致情况介绍给学生,然后由学生自主浏览该公司的网页,收集网页中有价值的信息(主要是公司概况、产品种类和销售情况),再利用google 搜索引擎查找国外相关产品的进口商,进而以国内出口公司业务员的名义模拟给其写信,期望与之建立业务关系。这一阶段的目的是激发学生对任务的关注,使学生一开始就处于一种主动、积极的情景氛围中,从而产生写作的渴望。
(三)情景写作:要求学生根据上阶段查找的进口商相关信息,在十五分钟内随堂写一封建立业务关系信函, 教师不做任何指导, 不提供范文,让学生按自己的设计进行写作。这一阶段各小组成员首先独立思考,然后在小组内就措词用句、结构安排、内容细节等方面的问题发表自己的意见。接着整个小组相互交换意见,经过分析讨论后,根据已有的专业基础和语言技能写出信函初稿。初稿写在写作专用本上, 并在信函的上方写上初稿字样, 以便与修改稿作对比, 目的是通过对比加深印象。
(四)初稿演示:首先邀请各小组代表把他们刚完成的建立业务关系信函初稿朗读给全班听,学生共同就信函的写作目的、内容, 写作者与接收者的关系、语义结构、内容的展开形式以及语言表达方式进行讨论, 找出存在的问题。
教师引导学生围绕下列六个问题进行讨论:
1、该信函的交际目的是什么?
2、交际双方的关系如何?
3、该信函是属于什么语式? 是为口头阅读还是为书面阅读的?
4、根据该信函的交际目的, 哪些应该是必要成分? 哪些是可选成分?
5、信函中的各种信息是如何组织及表达的? 内容展开的顺序如何?
6、你觉得信函初稿有哪些主要问题?
(五)范文分析:讨论完各组学生的信函初稿后,教师向学生提供范文。同样,教师就范文的交际目的、结构、内容、组织方式以及语言表达等方面进行分析,让学生进一步明白该建立业务关系语类特有的结构潜势。
(六)摹仿分析: 给学生建立业务关系信函若干份,让其模仿教师的分析方法自行分析,找出信函中的必要成分,可选成分和展开顺序,并对每个层次动向中可能使用的典型语言功能及其具体语言实现形式进行归纳总结, 供写作该类信函时参考。
(七)小组讨论:以“语类结构潜势”为依据把几封建立业务关系信函的结构打乱,让学生通过讨论拼接复原成符合语类惯例的信函。
(八)自我修改:学生讨论自己的信函初稿和范文之间的差距,然后利用课堂上规定的时间对原有的信函初稿进行修改或重写,并在修改稿上方注明修改稿字样。
(九)摹仿写作:根据语类结构潜势分析的结果,教师再提供不同的商务情景,各小组学生一起拟写属于建立业务关系这一语类的信函,其中包括阅读、研究、搜集、整理资料和写作等不同步骤。通过模仿写作,使学生更深切地体会到该语类的结构特征和语言风格。
四、结束语
本文从语类结构潜势理论及语类教学法入手,分析了教学中学生商务英语函电写作出现的问题, 探讨了语类结构潜势理论在商务英语函电课程教学中的实际应用, 以期探索提高学生商务英语函电写作能力的途径。语类结构潜势理论一方面有助于学生更好地把握各类商务英语信函的构建机制;另一方面对学生读懂和创造出得体而又地道的言语有着重要的作用。由于条件的限制, 笔者还没有在教学实践中进一步完善该理论指导下的教学设计,但是语类结构潜势理论对商务英语函电教学无疑具有指导意义。
